Family Reunion
Sesshomaru and Kagome landed lightly in the dark well. Kagome’s keen ears heard the traffic of the city and her sharp nose caught the unique scents. A small smile graced her face as she used her senses to reconnect with her home. When she looked over, though, a grimace was on Sesshomaru’s face as he tried to ignore the sudden assault to his sensitive senses.
“Sesshomaru! Kagome!” Both of them looked up at the sound of their names. “Are you going to come up or what,” Shippo asked in a cracking voice. Kagome’s smile widened at the kitsune’s voice trying to change.
Kagome looked over at Sesshomaru to see him studying the well walls. Giving a decisive nod, he picked Kagome up. Before she could protest, he leapt out of the deep water hole.
“Thanks,” Kagome said when they landed. Setting her down gently, Sesshomaru took the opportunity to scan the small building they were in. “It’s a shrine,” she told no one in particular. “My family lives here and guards it. Come on.” Grabbing Sesshomaru and Rin’s hands, who grabbed Shippo’s, they headed up the stairs and towards the house.
Kagome’s ears twitched with her nervousness at meeting her family. She could smell the dinner her mother was making. Sesshomaru was being more touchy than usual. Rin had let go of Kagome’s hand all ready, but Sesshomaru hadn’t. He seemed to realize how hard this was for her.
When they reached the front door, Kagome paused. She didn’t know if she should walk in or knock. Rin and Shippo looked confused as Kagome just stood there. Luckily, her dilemma was solved. Before she could decide what to do, Sota threw open the door.
“I’m going to the field, mom,” Sota yelled over his shoulder. He had a soccer ball under one arm and his cleats in his other hand. When he turned back, he gave a surprised yell. Their mother and grandfather slid into view before Sota’s shout was even finished. Now all of Kagome’s family stood gawking at them.
“Hi guys,” Kagome said sheepishly. She gave a small smile as she tried to lessen the blow.
Sota was the first to be able to rect. Taking an uneasy step closer, he looked at his sister. “Sis?” His voice turned more astonished. Suddenly, he flew at her and wrapped her in a hug. “Oh, sis, it is you!” He had certainly grown and stood almost at Kagome’s height.
Slowly, but confidently, Kagome’s mother and grandfather approached. They each hugged her and begged for them all to come inside. Her mother now had a splash of gray in her hair and the beginnings of wrinkles that couldn’t hide her beauty. Their grandfather hadn’t changed much. He was still spunky and full of old knowledge, but now a cane helped him to get around. They were all settled comfortably in the living room now.
Naturally, Sota had to point out the obvious things first. “So, Kagome, why have you got ears and pointed teeth?” Kagome knew that her mother and grandfather wanted to know, too, but they were being polite.
“Well, Kagome got hurt one night,” Shippo answered for her. “The only way to help her was to give her some demon blood.” He was seated on the love seat with Rin, who looked a little scared. Sota had given her a polite smile earlier, but combined with Rin hiding behind Shippo and Shippo’s reproachful look, he had refrained from doing so again.
“Thank you, Shippo,” Kagome told him. He gave her a cheesy grin before quieting down. Kagome’s family looked horrified at the news. Desperately wanting to change the subject, she decided to spring the news on them. “Besides, that’s not what I came to tell you.”
She ignored Sesshomaru’s side-glance at her tact. Shippo and Rin had suddenly become very interested with the carpet. Every other pair of eyes was trained on Kagome now. She took a calming breath. ‘Just like a band-aid’ she told herself ‘fast and quick.’
“I’m pregnant,” she blurted.
Sota and grandpa sat stock-still with shocked looks on their faces. Her mother, as normal started to spaz, bit in an unexpected way. “Oh, my GOD,” she shrieked. Leaping up, she gripped Kagome in a backbreaking hug. “So, when are you due? Do you know if it’s a boy or girl? Who’s the dad? Oh, is it Inuyasha?” Kagome felt Sesshomaru tense. “Did you finally get married? Oh, where is he?”
“Mom!” Kagome finally managed to get her attention. Sesshomaru was fairly snarling beside her, even though his face hadn’t changed. “Sesshomaru is the father,” she told her as she placed a hand on his arm.
“Oh.” She gave him a remorseful look. “I’m sorry, dear. I didn’t mean to offend you. Oh, dear. How did you meet?” She desperately tried to salvage their first impression.
“I met Kagome through Inuyasha,” Sesshomaru answered as politely as possible. “My little brother and I were fighting again and I kidnapped Kagome from them.” Sesshomaru almost smirked at their sudden frightened looks.
“He let me go later, mom. It’s no big deal.” Kagome tried to mollify her mother through her horror that Sesshomaru would actually tell them that.
“Uh, well…you two are married then?” Kagome’s mother attempted to continue a decent conversation.
“Married?” Sesshomaru gave Kagome a glance.
“Bonded,” Kagome explained, her cheeks tingeing pink. Sesshomaru would never agree to that.
“Oh,” he said blandly. “No, we are not,” he told her mother. Kagome continued to stare at the floor. “But I plan to bond to Kagome when we get back.” No one seemed to notice Kagome’s incredulous look.
“Oh, that’s wonderful,” Kagome’s mother exclaimed. “Well, tomorrow I’ll take you to the doctor’s office so when can sufficiently check on the baby. OK?”
Kagome just nodded before standing up. “Well, it’s rather late.” She really wanted to end this so she could talk to Sesshomaru. “Mom, why doesn’t Shippo bunk with Sota, Rin can sleep with me, and Sesshomaru can have the extra room?”
“That sounds good,” her mother answered around a wide yawn. Kagome managed to stifle her own so as not to show off her fangs.
Playing hostess, Kagome showed everyone their rooms, making sure to leave Sesshomaru for last.
