Chapter 14
Heading South
The couple walked on, they didn’t know where they were going just following the ashen sidewalks, there were no street signs, and each corner house had a number before turning down another road. It felt like they walked for hours, her feet ached, and her stomach growled with the need for food. She looked like she’d been in a fight with wild cat; dried blood still crusted on her arm, her lip still had a slight sting form the devastating blow, the nice sized contusion would heal with time; yet still held distortion.
Kagome could feel her eyes heavy due to the fatigued as she stumbled down the walk. With swift haste, Inuyasha had her tightly embraced in his chest. She looked up at him with a slight smile. “Thank you.”
He adored her and would do anything for her, including helping her walk, he wasn’t tired and this was nothing compared to the many miles he ran every morning. He snarled as he nestled her closer to his body.
“What is the matter? You seem restless,” she said resignedly, followed by a large yawn.
“It’s to quiet here, there should be something going on, yet nothing.” It was as if they entered a ghost town. He continued on, his senses vigilant. Surveying his area, he decided the best way to see the city was by air. “Kagome you need to climb on my back.”
Kagome had just fallen asleep in his arms, and squirmed in his chest having to answer him, “ can I get on my back later, please just let me sleep,” she grumbled.
“Later,” he whispered in her ear with a slight chuckle, “ I said you need to climb on my back and then I promise you can go back to sleep.” He lowered her legs as he listened to her whimper with protest as she lost the warmth he produced. With sleepy eyes, she complied as he helped her. He could feel her head automatically rest on his shoulder, as he cradled his hands under her legs. Her breathing slowed as she went limp on his back, she was asleep.
He crotched down, with deadly precision he bounced up with his vigor, soaring through the air he landed on the roof of the house careful not to disturb the red clay shingles. Houses became a blur as he leaped, to his now burgundy road. Watching the streets below, the crispness of the night air, mingled with the scent of pine, sweet fragranced flowers, and other animals off in the distance.

Hiten growled when seeing them fly up onto the houses there was no way he would be able to keep up with them. He needed to make a call, flipping open the silver and black diminutive cell phone; he dialed the Caracas police department. If he was not able to catch the two, the police definitely would. He would pay a good ransom for the couple, anything to keep Naraku off his back, he knew the consequences and was well prepared.
After talking to the officer and giving him the description of the two, he also threatened that if anything where to happen, and they would suffer dearly by the hands of Naraku. Pleased that the officer complied and already knew who was running the show with just the mention of his name was enough, he closed the small device placing it inside the coat pocket of his brown leather jacket. Turning around he headed back for his plane. ‘Hopefully they would be able to retain the half demon, without the use of deadly force,’ he sighed then glanced over at his wristwatch, flicking on the small light he read that it was five in the morning. Rubbing his forehead, trying to release the pent up frustration, he dreaded seeing or hearing from Naraku, who’d be home by morning. In addition, he needed some rest before the sun poked through the mountains surrounding the area.

Inuyasha made in to the heart of the city became alive with the song of the sirens from the police cruisers heading towards them. He cursed the loud ringing noise from the high driven sound. His ears flattened trying to drown out as much of the reverberation as possible. He could hear the car doors close then the rustling of men as they spoke in their foreign tongue. Curious he decided to see what was actually going on. He noticed Kagome still asleep; crouching down he carefully scooted to the end of the house avoiding the rusty looking drainpipe. Peeping his head over he could see the men heavily guarded with weapons ready, running around the dim lit streets only to lose sight of them in the shadowy corners of the buildings, ‘who are they looking for?’ he questioned.
Tall skyscrapers surrounding the now minuscule looking homes. There was no place to go, he was weary with the troops something was defiantly amiss, yet he couldn’t figure out what it was. Nor was he sure if they should approach them, he noticed anger etched on the one-mans face. They’re without doubt searching for someone, or something. He shook his head, ‘no one knows where here except, Naraku and that captain, and I killed that bastard, maybe I’m just being paranoid.’ He pondered. Then it clicked, closing his eyes he reflected on the boat and him leaving due to a phone call. ‘Who called? Could they possibly know we are here?’ He rubbed his brow trying to relive the pressure from his inquires. His growl supple, ‘If I wasn’t, so worried about Kagome I would have heard their conversation.’ His eyes narrowed ferociously at the men, these men who call themselves police, were corrupt and he knew it, his being screaming to flee, angered even more that their chance to go home again was demolished right before his eyes. He clenched his fist together, ‘damn!’
Readying himself to leave, and head south towards the highlands his foot caught the edge of the shingle, forcing the fragile stone to fall from its long resting spot only to shatter on the earth below. Automatically flashlights tore into his eyes, as he wasn’t expecting the bright light. Turning his head away to avoid the blinding light, he could hear a man yelling, as they prepared to fire upon them.
‘Time to go.’ With lightning speed, he held Kagome tighter as he retreated in the darkened night.
“Inuyasha,” Kagome mumbled as she slowly woke. She could feel the quickness of the wind as the cool breeze caressed her face, slowly awakening her, she wanted to rub her eyes, yet the swiftness Inuyasha produced seemed effortless, so she just held his neck tighter, “What’s the matter, why are you running as if death was after us or something?”
“Because Sweetheart, it is! You were right the fucking cops are dirty every fucking one!”
Kagome’s voice became frantic, “ Okay, I’m going back to sleep now this was all just a nightmare, right I ‘m asleep and your really not running from the law, please just pinch me or something…” She suddenly felt a prick from her lovers’ claws on her thigh, “ ouch that hurt!”
“Well you said pinch you sweetheart so I did, and no this is not a dream,” he could hear her sigh, “I wish it was, I guess we will just have to make due, I’m pretty sure I can lose them, but that doesn’t mean they will give up.”
“So where do you plan on going? And how do you know that the police are bad?”
“Someone had to know we’re here Kagome…”
She narrowed her eyes when she heard the pause, she knew all to well that he was leaving something out, “ Okay spill it.” If she could, she would be crossing her arms.
“ I slipped,” he said bluntly.
“You what! Oh that was brilliant of you.” She could feel the claws tightening under her thighs, his way of emphasizing her displeasing manner.
“This is not the time to be a Smartass,” he snorted, as he continued his mission away from the city lights. Houses were becoming less clustered than before, he could see large patches of green grass that surrounded the neighboring houses. The faint humming from the skies alerted him, his ears twitched to the light buzzing. Tuning his head he could see a light heading towards them, he snarled; then jumped off the rooftops onto the solid ground once again. He ran towards some surrounding trees, hoping that they would have safe place to hide.
Kagome slid off his back, as she could feel him pant, watchful of the skies, “Now what, you know they will still be able to track us don’t you?” She asked watching the hovering helicopter.
He snorted, “Of course I do, but I don’t think they saw us… see” he pointed his finger, “there going away.” A feeling of relief spread over his being, he reacted quick enough for a sudden escape. He could feel her arms coil around his waist while her chest embedded in his back while her head rested in the crook of his neck. He wanted to comfort her, yet didn’t know how; he placed his hands over hers, gripping the small palms tightly. “We will have to head through the forest, I do not have any clue to where we are going, from what I remember seeing on a map, was Columbia veered East, are best bet would to continue south,” Inuyasha concluded as he continued to stare off in the distance, “Avoiding the Andes Mountains.” He could hear her sighing behind him.
“And why not go to Columbia?” She asked, yet when she considered what the newspaper said about Americans being abducted, or the entire local drug lords running around, maybe that city wasn’t the best question. “Never mind, I know why?”
He pulled away from her only to gaze at her illustrated face. Running his hands over the silk of her attire, he leaned in towards her neck, his breath heavy on her skin, “because sweetheart, there is snow on the caps of those mountains, plus I would hate to see you get frostbite, and damage that beautiful skin of yours.” His eyes narrowed, at hers with primal lust, he traced his thumb over the cut, gently. “I think its time to recoat your wound.” He slowly led his lips towards hers, her eyes closed and brought her arms around his neck, only to bring him closer.
No matter how many times they kissed, or touched an electric spark shot through them, zeal inflamed engulfing the two. The need to feel, touch, soothe, and love wrapped into a gentle yet passionate kiss, leaving them longing for more.
She pulled away slightly out of breath, as she blushed under his alluring eyes that now seemed to call to her more than ever. She covered her still pulsing lips, carefully as if still on fire. She laughed, “So what is the other way?” Kagome tried to change the subject, if the kiss continued they surly would not be leaving anytime soon.
“The Amazon?” he cringed when she looked at him with a blaze in her eyes, he new all to well. He began to cower, as she was about to explode and he really was not sure what she was going to say. He wanted to speak, but his words came out jumbled, “Kag…ome…le…”
“Let you explain! “ She snapped cutting him off, “I would rather take my chances climbing over that fucking mountain, than to go into the Jungle and be eaten alive by God knows what!” She crossed her arms and sighed, the thought of snakes longer than a size of a human, and whatever creepy crawler lived there, made her quiver with unknown fear. She knew this wasn’t going to be a fun trudge, yet she couldn’t help but seethe in anger, leaving an island only to be lost in the jungle. “I’m cursed.”
“What, what do you mean your cursed, we have to go that way, I promise we wont sleep on the ground, and I will protect you,” he said warmly, caressing the side of her face, with the back of his hand, “ I promise we will go home.”
She didn’t have a choice but to follow him, going by herself would definitely render her chance in coming home in one piece. “Promise,” she whispered. Kagome trusted him and believed in his words. Grabbing his hand she tugged, “Well what are we waiting for? Daybreak is already upon us.”
She yelped when he grabbed her waist, and lifted her in his arms, bridal style, as he ran through the dense terrain.

The small phone rang in Hiten’s pocket, grumbling he lifted the annoying ringer and flipped his phone open, “hello,” he said rubbing his eyes. “What say that again!” the realization of the captain’s words stirred him. “Fuck what am I doing paying you for, how could you lose him, he’s the only person in town with snow white hair and ears.
“What direction?” he asked, then tittered at the response, “The jungle ay? Good, I will let Naraku know, I’m sure he will not be happy with your news, gather your men, dogs whatever go fucking find them! And don’t forget he wants them alive…broken yes but alive.” He snarled then hung up the phone. He could feel the quickening of his heart, dreading the now fatal call to his boss.

Sesshomaru awoke to the sun coming in from the open patio, he growled thinking of what today would bring, with the reckless kit. He yawned with a slight roar and stretched, he would think of ways to hurt him, for his lack ness in letting one sleep. Hoisting himself off the bed he headed for the shower.
After a satisfying warm shower, he shook his head side to side as his silver tresses flapped violently around him spraying the walls with the left over water. Pleased, he retrieved his clothing, a smile graced his façade, it was now time to pay Shippo back, ‘ I hope you are well rested,’ he thought sardonically.
Closing the door behind him, he banged on the opposite door across the hall. His fists pounded hard on the off-white wood, the thickness of the door left a frightening echo. He could hear rustling around when the door halfway opened exposing a half naked Shippo emerging with sleepless eyes, “what is it?” He asked still half asleep.
Sesshomaru was pleased to see the fox still tired, he sniffed the air his snout smelling out the strong traces of a female cat demon, he smirked and hit Shippo in the shoulder, “So do you plan on waking her before we leave?”
Shippo gave him an widen glare, “ What you plan on leaving now?”
Sesshomaru snarled, this kit was definitely going to be the death of him, he cringed anger filled his being. Grabbing the neck of the unsuspecting fox demon he squeezed tightly, bringing him closer to his stoic glare, “you will be wise, not to question me, I happen to be extremely cranky with your little mingle from last night.” He paused taking in deep breaths; calming himself, “now you knew the consequences, so I suggest you get dressed we will be leaving in five minutes.” He released Shippo watching the young demon place his hands up to his throat. Pleased he turned and headed back into the silence of his room and the fresh scent of the outside air.

Inuyasha stopped sniffing the air, he could smell people nearby. They were not in the woods, so he didn’t feel any lingering threat. Yet, the smell of cooking food enticed his stomach calling him with the need to feed himself, and Kagome.
He would never dream of stealing ones meal, he would rather hunt then to take from someone else, he growled frustrated, they were both very famished. The smell of fresh coffee and bread teased his nose he couldn’t help but want the food that was before them.
Following his nose, which led him away from the covers of the tall trees that swayed gently in the morning breeze, he could see a clearing. Large field with yellow and green long thin grass that seem to dance just for them, the color of flowers also held a beauty all there own. Inuyasha growled when he saw the men working out in the field and was careful not to give their cover a way.
Letting Kagome off his back, he looked at her with an ingenious smile, “Go to that house,” he pointed, “and ask, if the person living there can help us?”
She looked at him, confusion in her eyes, “What, I just cannot go prancing up to someone’s door and ask? Have you gone insane?”
He growled, “What! No, I am not insane! Look at me!” he shouted, and pointing to his ears, “Its up to you to get breakfast and ask for some clothing too, hell maybe she will feel sorry for you and give you a bath.”
She huffed, yet complied as she headed towards the small home, not without looking back and narrowing her eyes at her lover, promising retribution. “And your still an ass,” she snickered, as she heard him snarling behind her.
She approached the shabby wooden door and knocked softly. She waited until the door swung open. She looked at the elderly lady with a smile, “Hello,” she said shyly, hoping that this person spoke a word of English.
The old woman was short and stocky the lines in her face, promised of old age, yet her eyes still held youth, wisdom and love. Her once black hair was now a soft gray, which she had pulled into a tight bun. She was dressed in a plum wine dress, which had a sweetheart neckline, the end of the outfit flared down by her ankles, showing her black sandals, she also wore a white apron, that seemed to be covered in a yellow substance. The elderly woman held her own curious glare at the strange dressed woman. She could see the bruising and cuts she frowned but did not turn her away. Opening her arms, she invited the younger lady inside. “Come, come you must be tired and hungry?” She didn’t want to meddle about the injustices, she assumed were done to the young woman before her, and felt safe to let her into her home. Later she would dress her wounds, right now, she knew that she needed to eat and maybe get some rest.
”Yes!” Kagome exclaimed she couldn’t hide the hint of excitement in her voice. Not only was she offering her something to eat she also could converse with her, even if it was broken English, she still held that strong Latino flare.
Kagome followed behind her as she offered her a seat, “so what is you name señora?” Alessandra asked while pouring the young girl a cup of tea. She looked at the girl with pity, seeing the ripped attire and barefoot, her eyes widened, she scolded, “Where are your shoes? How did you walk…” she lifted Kagome’s feet and sighed, “… oh you, poor, unfortunate creature.”
Kagome was stunned when she felt her foot become inspected, she tried to answer the woman’s inquires, yet the softness in her voice, the need to tell this woman everything screamed to be, yet she held her tongue and only answered, “my name is Kagome.”
She smiled, “Kogome?” She paused reflecting the name.
Kagome smiled, and repeated her name, “Its Japanese and you pronounce it Ka…go…me’” She said a little slower.
“Kagome?”
“Yes that is correct,” her mirth widened she could fall to trust the woman that laughed with her.
“Kagome, my name is Alessandra Ruiz, it is very nice to meet you, but you can call me Sandra, for short,” she smiled while returning to the table with a plate full of food. “Here,” she pushed the plate in front of her, “eat.”
Kagome’s eyes brightened when she stared down at the food, “Pancakes!” ‘With syrup and butter?’ She couldn’t help but rejoice. Cutting into the softness of the fluffy cakes, she took a bite. “Is there cheese in here?”
Alessandra smiled, “ it’s called, queso blanco, or white cheese if you prefer, and what you are eating is my Madre’s recipe for crepes del maíz,” she moaned. She crossed her arms and kissed the rosary around her neck. Alessandra could see the confusion in her pretty face, “how silly of me, what you are eating is my mothers recipe for corn pancakes.”
“Oh, it’s really good.” As she continued consuming her meal, washing it, down with the hot liquid. She exhaled noisily; thinking about eating while Inuyasha was still outside hungry. Her eyes filled with guilt, how do you tell one your traveling with a half-demon.

Inuyasha snuck around the small home, listening on their conversation. Leaning up toward the window, he just wanted to see if Kagome was all right, flattening his ears so they didn’t attract attention, he carefully lifted his head and growled when he saw Kagome eating. ‘She’s getting Pancakes, and I’m stuck out here.’ He huffed, lowering himself.

“So are you traveling alone?” Alessandra addressed.
Kagome coughed, not expecting another question; swallowing her food she contemplated, ‘do I tell her?’ She brought her nail up to her mouth and started biting it as she continued to feel unsure. ‘What do I do?’ she closed her eyes, ‘well if he’s mad about it oh well, I have to tell her.’ “Yes, I’m traveling with someone.”
Alessandra was about to respond when both the women heard an aggressive growl outside. “Do you have a dog?”
Kagome laughed, nervously,“ Um…you can kind of say that.” The growl became louder, Kagome didn’t know what to do, “ will you excuse me, I need to go see if he’s okay, wait here I will be right back,” she stressed, as she held out her hand emphasizing for her to stay. She quickly ran out the door closing it behind her.
“Inuyasha, “ she whispered. She jumped back startled at his sudden appearance as he landed in front of her. “Inuyasha what in the hell do you think your doing?”
He growled, “me…just what in the hell are you telling her that I’m a dog.” He leaned forward sniffing her face, then pouted. “Well sweetheart at least you had a decent breakfast,” he grumbled, subsequently crossing his arms.
She couldn’t help the mirth that left her mouth after Inuyasha sniffed her, “and your telling me your not in some way a dog…” she huffed, “no I couldn’t tell by the way you where sniffing my mouth.”
He pulled her closer, “ well sweetheart you weren’t complaining a couple of hours ago, where my snout was and what I was sniffing then.” He watched her face turn a bright red before his eyes.
She smacked his arm playfully, “you are to a dog.”
“Ruff,” he snickered.
“Would you stop or your going to get us caught, then what?” She didn’t know what to think if Alessandra stepped outside. She could only imagine her fright seeing a half-demon with white triangular ears, long silver hair; eyes that would make the sun envious, not to mention his fangs and claws. She rubbed her forehead, feeling the anxiety of the day’s events wearying her.
“Kagome please come inside and finish…” She gasped, when seeing Inuyasha, “Oh mi dios él es un demonio!” Alessandra started chanting, holding her cross next to her lips, as her eyes widened at the beast before her. She repeated this time in English, “Oh my god he's a demon!”
Kagome turned around sharply hearing the elderly woman; she automatically saw the fear in her eyes and the frantic tone in her voice. She tried to approach, but Alessandra kept backing away. “ Please, let me explain.” She frowned when the elderly woman wouldn’t stop, “please, I need you to understand that were not here to hurt you.”
Alessandra could not think, she just held her cross praying that her life would be spared. She wanted to call for her husband, yet she was afraid to. She tried to understand what the American was saying; her world became dizzy as she hit the ground.
“Oh my god!” Kagome yelled, while quickly approaching the woman, “ Inuyasha is she…” she didn’t want to believe that the nice woman had died. Tears formed in her eyes as she tried to check her pulse. “Alessandra…” she began to shake her, “ please wake up,” she cried, she could not help but blame herself.
Inuyasha also approached her, “no the old lady just fainted,” he stated nonchalantly. He scooped up the elder and brought her inside and headed for what he thought was he room, where he laid her on her bed covering her with what seemed like a hand made quilt. Looking around he could see paintings of ancient Mayan warriors; glancing at the window, he became entranced with the spectacular view of the mountains. He loved the way the smell of this country, the air was clean, and it was easy to identify smells. His face scowled when he smelt the other male members of the family approaching. “Kagome,” he shouted.
Kagome wiped away her tears and approached Inuyasha, “ what is it?”
“We have company, lets go!” He snarled, “ get what you can we don’t have a lot of time.”
“ I can’t steal from her, she was nice to me.”
“Well sweetheart, leave her a note,” Inuyasha said cynically.
Kagome narrowed her eyes at him, mumbling obscenities while she gathered some food and placed it in a large tattered yellow pack that was lying around. She couldn’t just embezzle Alessandra’s food; she felt like this was a moral sin. Leaving her a small thank you note, they did not leave her without; just enough to satisfy their hunger for the day, leftover corn cakes, and some flatbread. Just before Kagome left, she saw a hat sitting on the corner of the chair, directly next to the small table, ‘sorry Alessandra, I promise to make this up to you.’ Kagome smiled sadly as she grabbed the brown hat. Closing the door, she followed Inuyasha into the thickness of the forest.
