Back Home
Kurama was sitting at the table with the others. Yusuke and Kieko had called to invite everyone out to breakfast. They were planning on holding a big party for Genkia's eighty'th birthday. The old woman of course knew nothing of their plans. Even Hiei had shown up but it was probably for the free food. The large group sat around the table eating and talking. Hiei was once again insulting Kuwabara's table manners. Everyone laughed as they started to squabble.
Shizuru lit a cigarette, inhaling the smoke. Keiko laughed as the big idiot started once again yelling with a mouth full of food.
Kurama picked up his cup of coffee and took a sip. "Really Kuwabara, there's...." He dropped the cup of coffee on the table. The feeling slammed into him leaving him speechless. It was back and it was intense. The only other time he'd had that feeling was when he and Koronue had been running to go check out an artifact after they'd left HER. She had obviously been on the verge of dying. Why would he feel it now, over five hundred years later?
"Kurama are you okay?"
"Whats the matter fox?
"Impossible, you can't be alive."He spoke to himself, his thoughts returned to the girl from the past. Her face, her scent and the way she had smiled at his partner. He stood up and ran out the resteraunt. Unknowningly Hiei and Yusuke quickly followed him. The feeling was intense so he followed it. He soon found himself going back down the roads he'd taken the last time the strange feeling had consumed him. This time as soon as he got near the same spot, an ambulance passed him to pull up at the bottom of the shrine. He could see them carrying a stretcher with someone on it. He couldn't see who it was but his insticts said that was the person he was being pulled to.
A woman came running down the steps to climb in with them. A small boy and elderly man stopped at the bottom watching as it pulled off. Kurama got close enough to hear them speak.
"Grandpa what happened? Why was she hurt like that, why didn't he protect her?" Souta couldn't believe that his sister had suddenly appeared out of nowhere bleeding from a large wound in her shoulder. Why hadn't his hero protected his sister.
"I don't know Souta. I have a feeling something bad has happened. We will have to wait for her to wake before we know."
"Is she going to be okay?" A tear slid down his cheek, he knew he gave her a hard time but he loved his sister dearly.
"Yes, Kagome is a strong girl she'll pull through. Now lets go to the hospital, I'm sure your mother will need the company." Gramps pulled the boy behind him to the car.
"You're not going to drive are you gramps?"
"Of course, how else are we going to get there?" The old man climbed in.
"But you remember what mom said last time you drove her car." Souta climbed in the passenger side. Hopefully gramps wouldn't run into anymore poles.
Kurama stood there as the car pulled off. His hands fisted at his sides, his thoughts in turmoil. The old man had said Kagome. His mind went back to the young girl Kuwabara had bumped into. Was it possible that his mate had walked right past him? It couldn't be true, that girl had been the same age yet hadn't had his mark. He would have sensed it then. Wouldn't he have felt something before now? Except for those few days and now he hadn't sensed anything.
"Shall I find out who was carried away?" Hiei landed beside him.
"What the hell is wrong with you Kurama?" Yusuke shouted. He'd ran out like a bat out of hell scaring them all. "Now, who can't be alive?"
"No one." Did it even matter if it was her? How had she lived this long, they'd both believed she was a human. Wait she had died, or so everyone had believed. Had she somehow prolonged her life and let all those that loved her go on mourning her? Why would she do something like that? He thought back and tried to remember those she'd left behind. The hanyou and his woman came to mind, they had been killed some years later. The taijiya and houshi had died ten years later in a blaze with the kit. And Koronue, his heart pinched at that thought. All those people had died tragically and suddenly, did she have something to do with it. The only conclusion was that the girl hadn't meant to die and came back to hate those that had lived. Up until that day he died, him and Koronue had several close calls. Unexpected accidents, he'd thought nothing of them until now.
Koronue had never gotten over the lose of her. Some much that when that stupid pendant had been torn from his neck, he'd gone back for it. He'd once said Kagome had given it to him their first night together. It caused his death, as soon as he went back for it, he'd been killed. Surely she had known he'd go back for it. It was her fault his friend was dead.
Kagome came to in the hospital. She had wires hooked up to her chest, something was rammed in her nose. Her hand shot up pulling the irritating plastic out. How had she ended up here? The last thing she remembered was making a wish and feeling the power from the jewel. Then she had been consumed suddenly and then nothing. Her wish, it must have been granted. That meant she was back home for good this time. Tears filled her eyes at not seeing her friends ever again. Then she thought of him. She never got a chance to say goodbye. Did he believe her to be dead now? Was he still alive in this time? Even if he was alive, he'd have surely forgotten about her. She cried herself to sleep, dreaming of the man she'd left behind.
