Chapter 14: A Battle for Love

Kagome’s eyes widened in fright as she came upon the clearing, still in the past Sesshoumaru’s arms. There, struggling madly against their bonds, were Shippou, Kohaku, and Rin. All three children looked as if they had been crying, and Kohaku and Shippou both had open wounds as their skin had been slashed open.

The demons were all seeing red at the sight, and a loud, continuous, ominous growl filled the clearing. Kagome jumped from Sesshoumaru’s arms, her eyes bleeding a brilliant pink as her powers flared to life. Her staff at her side, she pointed it out at Naraku first, her eyes narrowing as the shock left her, and the anger replaced it.

She saw Inuyasha faintly through the corner of her eye, and she couldn’t help her heart flinching at the way he was looking at her. His eyes were full of contempt, and anger, but the thing that Kagome saw that confused her the most, was the betrayal that laced its way through his lightly golden eyes.

Both Sesshoumarus’ were livid beyond anything they had experienced ever before. Their Rin, and the adopted child of their mate, along with the demon slayer child, were in the hands of the enemy, and from the looks of it, the two male children had tried to protect that which was theirs.

They could smell the deep fear and the tears that had leaked from each of the children, and that only seemed to intensify their fury further.

A fierce wind blew around everyone, followed by a loud, evil laugh that came from Naraku. Kagome’s glare deepened, and she took a preliminary step towards the evil hanyou, and, inadvertently, Inuyasha and the one miko whom Kagome couldn’t stand, Kikyou.

The tension could be cut through by a knife, and everyone watched as the human miko walked closer and closer to the bound children, somehow, everyone knew that only she would be allowed to get this close to them.

Kagome came within a few feet of Naraku, and he smirked, alerting the raven haired girl just in time to erect a barrier over herself and the children as a huge cloud of miasmic mist erupted from his body, covering the clearing in the poisonous vapors.

Jin used his wind to keep the rest of the group safe, as he manipulated the breezes to keep the toxic haze away from everyone, pressing it back towards Naraku. Kikyou kept Inuyasha safe as she put up her own miko barrier, purifying the mist as it came dangerously close to one of her new ‘loves’.

Kagome took the time to untie Shippou, Rin, and Kohaku. They all began crying and hugging onto her like a lifeline, afraid that if they let go, she would disappear.

She held back her tears and held onto them tighter, keeping her anger in check for the moment.

Words were not needed by anyone, as each fighter glared in turn at the vile hanyou. Both Sesshoumarus’ growled at Inuyasha, their contempt for their blood relative etched in a permanent look of anger upon their faces.

“So it begins…” Naraku said, as twin golden tendrils headed for Inuyasha, which were stopped by Kikyou’s barrier. Yusuke immediately charged his Spirit Gun, but as he went to fire, numerous of Naraku’s infamous puppets came bursting out of the ground, forcing the spirit detective back for a moment before he released his Spirit Shotgun instead.

Kuwabara was having a hard time dealing with one of the puppets that seemed to want to desecrate him in the most painful way possible, while Sango and Miroku took up positions back to back in order to take down one of the puppets that had went after them.

Hiei released his katana from it’s sheath, as he expertly took the time to demolish a hoard of tentacles that came for him, while Youko did the same, coming out to offer his greater power and skill in the battle.

Both Sesshoumarus’ seemed to be hell bent on killing Inuyasha, and he pulled out the Tetsuseiga, allowing it to transform into the large fang it was capable of becoming.

Grinning evilly, Inuyasha found the wind scar quickly, and raised the mighty sword, bringing it down swiftly. The burst of light got everyone’s attention, and the rivets of pure energy divided the small force of fighters up, leaving deep gashes in it’s wake.

Kagome looked to each person of their team in turn, making sure they were all still okay. Smoke rose from the rivets that laced the ground as the last reminants of the power dissipated into the air. Kagome’s eyes narrowed as she looked to Inuyasha, and her heart broke again. ‘Why, Inuyasha?’ she thought again, before her attention was brought back to Naraku as he sent one of his puppets after her.

Frowning, she quickly destroyed the mindless drone, her power enveloping it quickly, disintegrating it without a second bit of hesitation. She arched an arrow, her mind sparkling clear on what she wanted to do. ‘It’s over, Naraku…’ she thought quickly, her eyes narrowing as she let the arrow fly towards the evil demon.

Kikyou smirked and suddenly, a very familiar mirror was brought forth, absorbing the arrow slowly and keeping Naraku safe. Fury erupted in Kagome as she raced forward with her staff, knocking away the wave of tentacles that came for her, diminishing them into ash.

A scream filled the air, making Kagome backtrack. Her heartbeat instantly picking up speed, she looked back, just as she saw another wave of miasmic sludge descend upon the ones she had come to care for, and visa versa. Rin watched, horrified, as the acid came closer and closer to her Sesshoumaru. Both of them.

Kagome didn’t think, she just reacted as she threw herself in front of them, her barrier coming up only to press them back together as it fell around them. The miasma burned through her clothes, but she concentrated on the barrier as more and more of the vile substance swirled on the outside of the barrier.

Jin was no longer in his happy place. He had missed the rapid firing of Naraku’s poison, and now, now he was afraid they had lost Hiei and Kurama, as well as both Sesshoumarus’. Yusuke was livid and his heart was breaking in his chest. “NO!” he shouted in instinct, as his demon blood rushed forward, transforming his physical appearance.

Sango and Miroku had no time to think on the loss of Kagome. They needed to defeat Naraku, and they needed to do it now.

Inuyasha looked upon the scene, his eyes filled with pain, confusion, and something one could define as remorse. He took an involuntary step forward, reaching a hand for the first person to treat him as normal…the first person to befriend him…the first person to love him unconditionally.

Kikyou looked to Inuyasha and her eyes narrowed in fierce contempt. She took a step closer
to Naraku, and he smirked, before positioning a tentacle behind the hanyou, intent on slaying him where he stood. He had served his purpose, now it was time to kill him.

Before he could touch him, the air around them exploded as the area was shrouded in thick mist, quickly making everyone feel drowsy. Sango quickly put on her mask, but was too late for the quickly working anesthetic. Naraku frowned before pulling back the tentacle. Kikyou quickly stepped back, her miko powers stopping her from being affected.

Then, for some reason even now not understood, everyone’s souls began to be ripped from their bodies. Naraku grimaced as his soul and his son’s soul were pulled apart, separating them for the first time since he assimilated with the young boy’s body. Kikyou grasped at her chest quickly, trying in a futile attempt to keep her soul within her body.

Inuyasha was still too much out of it to comprehend what was happening, and fell limp to the ground as his soul separated from his body, joining the others in the misty haze, where no one could distinguish their souls from the others.

Kurama reached out a hand to Youko as he felt the unfamiliar pangs shoot through him. His alter persona was upset, and began to thrash wildly. The kitsune wouldn’t mind being separated and back in his own body, but this was unnatural, and he was still concerned about Kagome, who had said nothing since the moment she threw herself in front of them to save them from the miasmic attack that Naraku had unleashed.

His attention was pulled back when he saw Hiei twitching slightly as his own soul was brought forth and added to the ever growing mix of souls and vapor.

Both Sesshoumarus’ growls filled the air around them as his own demon side fought against what was happening. Kuwabara was the only one who was able to hold onto his own soul, and no one to this day really knows why. Be it his intense spiritual awareness, or his own internal strength, no one knew, but he watched with fear filled eyes as everyone became weaker and weaker, as their souls separated from their bodies.

Suddenly, everything stopped.

A glow surrounded the bodies of both Sesshoumarus’, Kagome, Kurama, and Hiei, as their four souls found each other in the mass of confusion. With their bonds, the souls called to each other and they formed a circle, hovering above their owners with a faint shimmer to each one.

Kikyou was lost watching the spectacle, as the souls of Yusuke, Jin, Genkai, Sango, Miroku, Rin, Kohaku, and Shippou gathered together, acting as a sort of barrier around the circle of four souls that was the strength of the group.

Kirara’s fur spiked in anger as she stepped in front of the group, fear for her master’s safety deeply set on her mind.

Naraku’s demon souls threatened to attack the four center souls of the group they were fighting. They could sense the miko energy in Kagome’s soul and went after it, as well as Kikyou’s soul. Her ear piercing scream could be heard throughout the clearing, as her soul was ripped to shreds in moments, the very essence of her soul being disintegrated, and there was nothing anyone could do to stop it.

Consciousness was gone, except for a small voice in the back of Kagome’s head that recalled something she had heard so very long ago, it seemed.

“Mind, Body, Spirit, Heart…Four will be bound by these elements…four will stop the evil…four will break the seal on a young maiden’s true soul, and four will release the demon within…
Four minds, four bodies, four spirits, four hearts…one will harness the power of four and will awaken with power never before witnessed since the dawn of time…
A mind full of unparalleled knowledge…
A body containing two souls…
A spirit tormented by fire and ice…
A heart waiting for the chosen one to heal it…
Together with the young maiden of legend, they will dispel the evil that threatens the earth and bring peace once again to the three realms…

Mind, Body, Spirit, Heart…together, they will be bound by trust, friendship, power, and above all, together…they will be bound by love…

Mind, Body, Spirit, Heart…Four will be bound by these elements…

As the words repeated themselves, Midoriko’s voice could be heard, her own soul still trapped within the Shikon no Tama that was still sealed within the young miko’s body. ‘The power of four…’ she said, before a blinding light came from the center of the circle, as huge amounts of power shot into Kagome’s solitary soul, making it glow a deep, blood red as it changed, and the traces of demonic energy that had existed there since before the dawn of time came forth, growing exponentially in strength and intensity.

A scream could be heard, but no one knew where it was coming from, as the cry was swallowed by the swirling vortex of power. The demon souls that were attempting to attack Kagome’s miko soul were purified instantly, flowing back to Naraku, as his own soul rooted back in his evil body, allowing him free reign again.

The moment it did, the protective circle broke, and everyone else’s souls went rushing back into their bodies just as quickly, the sleeping fog no longer having any effect on any of them.

Finally, after the last of their souls were safely within the confines of their respective bodies, the demon souls, along with one human soul, that being Shuichi’s, went back into their owners, calming just moments before Kagome’s body was launched into the air, her soul literally looking as if it were to explode before it forced it’s way back into her, pausing only long enough to get past the weak film of energy that was attempting to protect the miko’s body as it did so.

Everyone, now focused on the supernatural act occurring with their friend, stared with wide eyes and open mouths as Kagome floated back down to the cold, forest floor, looking much, much different than before.
