Chapter 12
Inuyasha lifted Kagome up into his arms, holding on to her tightly. He sprinted past Sango and Miroku and headed west, towards his brothers estate. No one was able to give him answers and he needed to form some sort of alliance with his brother, if he was to properly defeat Naraku. All though he hated the thought of being near his brother, he could not deny the fate, which now bestowed his mate. “Who was this person Naraku was talking about?”
“Inuyasha,” she said silently.
“What is it love!”
“There are shards approaching us, and they are coming at us fast.”
“Which way are they headed and how many?” He asked as he stopped, setting her down with ease, if he were going to fight, he might as well be prepared.
She leaned into him with needed strength; she pointed north, “ Four shards Inuyasha.”
He drew out his mighty sword, as he stood in a stance waiting. He sniffed the air and growled when the scent became closer. He snarled with heated anger, “Kouga!”
Kagome cringed hearing the name, here she was about to come face to face with the very man who hurt her, and she knew he was stronger than before and feared for Inuyasha’s life. She pleaded for a retreat; it ate at her very being since the man whom she had trusted was very much alive. She could feel the burning in her shoulders, as his claim to her scarred into her skin even more, almost as if he was calling her and she had no choice but to oblige. She ignored the calling and stayed by Inuyasha’s side.
Inuyasha was beside himself, “Kagome are you alright?” he asked her softly. However, he never kept his glance off the vile beast in front of him.
Sesshomaru decided to patrol his lands when he caught the familiar scent of his brother and his wench, he growled, “What are they doing on my lands, I will see to it that they must leave now.” He pondered, and then headed east. With lightning speed, he would soon confront his brother.
Inuyasha snarled when the wolf stepped out into the clearing in front of them, “Going somewhere with my woman, mutt-face,” he growled clenching his fist together, insinuating that there was going to be a fight soon.
Kagome couldn’t dare look at the wolf in front of her and began to tremble, her legs began to feel wobbly. She clenched his robe tighter, trying to stand. She fought back the tears that were welling up in her eyes. She closed them tightly as the plague of memories came crashing down on her hard. “This isn’t real Inuyasha, you killed him I saw you kill him, he isn’t here,” she cried, desperately trying to convince herself that he was a ghost.
One arm securely wrapped around her waist while the other held his fang, which he pointed it at the wolf. He wished he could tell his mate that Kouga didn’t exist, however his nose never lied. “No Kagome I cannot tell you that he is a ghost, he is real and very much alive,” he snarled, as his gaze narrowed malevolently at the other male. “As for you wolf, you will not be leaving alive.”
Kouga just chuckled he was getting impatient and soon wanted to reclaim what was rightfully his. “Kagome, you belong to me, not dog shit, if you come with me now I will let him live.”
“She is not going anywhere with you, she is my mate,” he stated venomously.
Kagome didn’t want to hear anymore, “Inuyasha, please lets leave.” She did not want to tell him that it was because her body was fighting the urge to return to Kouga’s side.
He could feel his distress of his mate as her little fists clenched tighter into his robe. He could smell her tears and thought best to fight him another day. Scooping her up into his arms, he retreated, heading for the scent of his brother.
Kouga chuckled, he watched Inuyasha escape with his mate, and ‘I’ll be nice and give him a head start.’ As soon as they were out of his scent range, he sprinted off after them in a fierce tornado, leaving dust in his wake.
He ran with all his might he knew that the wolf was following him, he had to admit that he was now faster and stronger than before. For the first time he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to protect his mate. He growled when looking down at his love in his arms, she had her head buried under his neck, her eyes closed and her fists still clenched tightly to his clothing.
She couldn’t fight the pain any longer and whimpered each stride he took away from Kouga the pain would escalate. “Please, stop…I cant,” she pleaded.
He looked down at her with confusion, “ Talk to me what is the matter?”
“I don’t know I just know I feel a lot of pain in my shoulder, since we’re reacquainted with Kouga.”
With a puzzled expression, he looked sadly down at her, her face was pale and her eyes closed, he could hear the grinding of her teeth as they chattered. The stench of fear emanated off her. He was at a loss, he had no choice but to stand up and face Kouga, and pray that he would indeed survive only to protect his mate. He knelt down, with her still tightly in his grasp, he reached to pull her shirt away from her shoulder so he could see his mark, maybe it would be reassuring that he was the stronger of the males. He gasped when his mating mark was no longer visible; the only mark on her now was that of the wolf. He growled with a heated anger.
Laying her down on the soft grass, he heard the tell tale voice of his older brother, “What are you doing here?”
He glanced up, he swallowed his pride; “I came in search of you,” he responded, trying to control his anger, Sesshomaru wasn’t his enemy this time, he needed him as a brother and hoped he would be able to get some answers on to why everything was happening.
Sesshomaru just glared at him, with those all familiar stoic eyes, his nose slightly twitched when he smelt the other demon approaching quickly. “Tell me brother, why didn’t you mark your mate yet.”
It was as if his brother plunged a sharp knife into his chest, with his very words; he looked down while his white mane covered his golden hue. “I did.”
Sesshomaru sniffed the air again, he could smell the scent of his brother but it was very faint, “Deal with the wolf, while I exam her mark.” Like his younger he too was curious with the strange events, he knew Inuyasha killed him, and he could smell the wolf still alive, he was definitely puzzled but it didn’t take him long to figure out that Naraku was behind it.
Inuyasha pulled out his sword as it transformed, into his hands, he gripped the handle tightly snarling, at the other male standing there with a cocky grin on his face. Oh, how Inuyasha wanted to wipe it away permanently. He was about to charge with until he heard his mate; he turned his shoulder to see her eyes half opened.
“Inuyasha,” she said groggily, “Please be careful.” She gave a half smile and closed her eyes again, this time gripping her shoulder tightly, as the pain continued searing into her flesh.
He smiled at her, “I love you mate, and will be back soon, stay strong,” he said reassuringly then looked over at his brother, their eyes met with a silent understanding and with that, he was gone. He raced towards the wolf head on, ears flattened on the top of his head and his incisor draped out of the side of his mouth, “Wind Scar!” He shouted as the power shout out of his large fang and descended upon the wolf.
Kouga easily dodged the blow and laughed, “Come on Inuyasha I remember you being much more of a challenge, I didn’t think this would be so easy to kill you.” He cackled, with speed that would put the mighty Sesshomaru to shame he was now face to face with Inuyasha as he punched the unsuspecting half-demon in the face, sending Inuyasha flying back. Kouga laughed when he saw his mate, and began approaching her.
The blow took Inuyasha back; blood now trickled out the side of his mouth. He watched the other demon stroll past him and started heading towards his mate. “Oh no you don’t!” He yelled then jumped up and grabbed Kouga by the back of his neck.
Sesshomaru growled when he saw the marking, it was defiantly festered, looking at it again, he could only suspect the only reasoning behind the vanishing of the mark was that Kouga was now the stronger of the males. He would have to interfere if his brother would indeed be successful. Standing to walk away, he felt a small hand grab his arm before he could stand.
“Lord Sesshomaru… please.”
He stopped, ‘what is she trying to say.’ He would normally not help a human out but after the last battle with his brother, he found a new respect for his sibling, he wasn’t as weak as he once thought and decided to put his childish behavior aside, and let him live, he even shocked himself when he agreed to help them. He grabbed her tiny hand and his once cold eyes, harbored emotion. “ What is it sister?”
‘Sister,’ she pondered. With a slight smile, she accepted him, “Thank you.” She whispered silently. She needed to help her mate, and she would be able to with the help of her new brother. It was an easy acceptance, soon put the past bitter memories aside, she would start fresh, and new, that just how she was. She would not dwell on the past. “Please, help me up.”
He nodded and helped her up with the gentleness of ease. She grabbed her bow, and then grabbed his free hand careful of his deadly claws. She would be the one to end the life of the man who took away her virginity, her sanity and wash away the horrid memories of her nightmarish dreams. He would not live to see tomorrow that she promised.
Kouga stopped, when feeling the sharp nails embedded into the back of his neck. With great speed, he seized the wrist of his opponent with his right hand as he reached behind him grabbing the arm, and then flipped him over his shoulder, making Inuyasha land on his back, with a sounding thud. Kouga laughed, “ What, not done yet,” he stated snidely then placed his foot under the demon’s neck, choking him with the heel as he kept him down firmly.
Inuyasha struggled; he was losing precious oxygen as he tightly grabbed the ankle of the wolf, trying to throw him off balance. However, Kouga was much stronger, with the help of the extra shards. Each time Inuyasha tried to claw at the rival, he could feel the tightness growing deeper into his throat.
“Let him go Kouga!” Kagome shouted, using the strength of Sesshomaru while she notched her bow, and aimed it at his heart. Her hands were shaky with the adrenaline rush, and the fear of losing her beloved.
Kouga had no choice but to obliged, he knew that Inuyasha was no match for him yet his elder was another story, all he wanted was what rightfully his. He thought best to ignore his mate’s pleas and keep the pressure in his neck, “Lord Sesshomaru, does it not state in demon law, that I have claim on this woman, do you not see her mark.”
Sesshomaru sighed the wolf was right, however, he was the Lord of the Western lands, the great aristocrat assassin. He never approved of this law no matter how bad he disliked humans rape was not his way. It was a weak attempt and in his eyes, it was null in valid. “It was not honorable and therefore I don’t see a mark of this claim,” he lied and he knew Kouga also did to.
Kouga growled and pressed harder on the neck, hearing the whimpers of Inuyasha.
Kagome draw back her arrow, “Hit the mark,” she stated then released her weapon as it sailed through the air with an echoing whistle.
Kouga jumped out of the way, releasing his prey. In addition, he could see his mate lace up another weapon, he growled at her, only to let her know that her punishment would be inevitable. “Bitch! You dare fire on your mate.”
Sesshomaru wanted so bad to interfere, however he knew if he would leave her side, she wouldn’t be protected. He growled he didn’t like being off guard.
“You are not my mate!” She screamed back, sending another arrow at him, again she watched as he easily dodged it. Each time she would use her purification she could feel herself weakening, yet tried to remain strong for Inuyasha. She pulled back her arm and reached for another arrow, by the feel of the feather tips she only had two arrows left. She growled, when she realized that she would fail and probably watch Inuyasha and his brother die before her eyes. She refused to let that happen again only to be a victim to this psycho before her. Her eyes narrowed as she once again pulled back, this time waiting. “Never! She yelled, Never will I return to you, I would be happy to die a thousand deaths then let your filthy claws get anywhere near me again!”
Inuyasha showed pride in his mate; hearing the words spoken out of her mouth and once again, he transformed Tetsusaiga aiming at the evil before him. “This ends now!” He roared as he raised his sword over his head speaking those all too famous lines and he brought the mighty blade down on the ground. He could also hear the wisp sound of the arrow, he smiled there was no way Kouga was getting out of this one alive.
