A New Path

Kagome emerged from her bath about two hours later. She quickly dressed and fixed her hair before going to find Sesshomaru. She went into the kitchen first to find her mom. She was standing at the stove cooking dinner.

“Mom, do you know where Sesshomaru is? I just finished my bath, and I want to tell him the news.” Kagome said.

“You don’t sound very happy about this news honey. Isn’t it good news that you are both demons?” Her mom said.

“I don’t think that it is, because this could mean that our relationship is based only on blood. Moreover, he was so excited when he found out that I might have demon blood, maybe that’s all he cares about, my bloodline. What do I do if that is true? I can’t marry someone based on our blood.” Kagome answered sadly.

“Honey, I think that Sesshomaru has a lot of pride, and I think that he was worried about the blood, because he doesn’t want to put you in danger, as all the other demon lords would be angered by his stooping to human blood, and consider him weak. They would attack him, and see you as a human plaything, and that would be the first thing that they would take away from him. You should talk to him about it, and express your concerns.” Her mom said.

“Yeah, I guess I should. I just have to find him and tell him.” She said. She decided that he would probably feel more comfortable outside, so she went out there to look for him. She looked around the whole perimeter of the shrine first, but didn’t see him. She went and looked in the area around the well, and found him near the sacred tree. He was staring at the lighter part of the bark where Inuyasha was pinned; it never re-grew back because of Kikyo’s sacred arrow. Kagome watched him for a few minutes, and then talked to him.

“Sesshomaru, we need to talk.” She said.

“As you wish, did you speak with your mother?” He asked.

“Yes, but first we need to talk about us. Sesshomaru, why do you feel the way you do about me?” She asked.

“I must tell you the truth, at first; it was the respect and loyalty that you showed to Inuyasha, returning to him even after he hurt you. That made me respect you, and made me look at you as more than his wench, more than a mere human. Then, when you were in danger, and he wasn’t there to protect you, I felt an inescapable need to do what Inuyasha was not. I saw how protective you were of that pup, Shippo I believe, and I saw what a good mother you would be. There is a strong connection between our bloods Kagome, but I also respect you and see you as a desirable woman, without the call of my blood.” He replied.

“Then why is my bloodline so important to you? Why do you feel such a need to see what kind of blood I have?” She asked.

“First, because there are other demon lords out there that would look at my feelings for you as weakness, and they would attack me. The first thing they would go after would be you, because they would see you as my weak point. I couldn’t let you put yourself into that danger. Second, because your bloodline has to be put into the family tree, so that we know the full blood of any children. That is the way the demon aristocracy works.” He said.

“Oh Sesshomaru…well, good news then, I’m a demon.” She said.

“You are a full demon? That is impossible, because no full demon has miko powers, perhaps you are a hanyou then.” He said.

“My mom said that I have so much demon blood in my family in this time, and in Kikyo’s time, that her blood is nearly insignificant, so I would be seen as full demon by other demons, but her blood allows me to have miko powers.” Kagome said.

“Kagome…I have something to ask you.” He said, glancing at the sacred tree again.

“Yes?”

“I wish your mother and family to be present.” He said.

“Alright, let’s go back into the house then.”

They walk back to the house.
