Her First Journey; The Calm Before The Storm

The sun was warm, beautiful and bright as the young priestess walked through the market. It’d been over two months since she’d taken over the large shrine very well known throught Japan. As she walked past several vendors, she was greeted and bowed to. It was no secret, but ever since she’d taken over Higurashi shrine, she’d blossomed into a lovely young woman, with maturity and kindness rivaling that of her elder sister. People from all over Japan, traveling from as far as Hokkaido and Sendai came to Tokyo just to see Kagome and be healed for her. There was only one thing Kagome could not do; cure a broken heart. People knew that unlike her pregnant and married elder sister, Kagome did not have a boyfriend; much less any man to help take care of her or the duties of the shrine, especially since Kikyou and her husband had moved to ‘Kyoto’, but Kagome knew ‘Kyoto’ was code for ‘Feudal Japan’. Yet as often as they invited her to come and visit, Kagome just couldn’t force herself to go down that well and into a different world…and possibly into Inuyasha’s arms. She’d managed to steel her reserve when it came to Inuyasha, deciding a long time ago that her feelings for him were nothing more than the product of a teenage crush. As Kagome left the shopping district in favor of home, people bowed to her, showing her the same respect, if not more, for her than they had Kikyou. It filled her with a sense of pride and joy to know people needed her, more so than Kikyou, but at the same time, Kagome often felt empty. Maybe, she often thought, it was the feeling of coming home to a large shrine all by herself and not being greeted by Kikyou or greeted by Inuyasha. As Kagome ascended the large shrine steps, she could see someone waiting for her over the top of the steps and leaning against the Goshinboku. Decked out in all red with his long, black hair flowing in the soft wind, was the young man who always made her heart skip a few beats…

“Inuyasha…”

He turned to look at her, but when she saw his eyes were full of worry and concern, she knew that whatever the nature of his visit, it wouldn’t be pleasant.

“Kagome…you look well.”

“Hai…arigato, Niisan.”

Niisan…Inuyasha couldn’t stand hearing those words from Kagome’s smiling lips. Sure, marriage to Kikyou was wonderful and he was getting more and more excited about the birth of his pup, but somewhere deep inside of him was a feeling for Kagome he’d worked hard to suppress. He shook his head with a small sigh.

“Kagome, we need you to come to Feudal Japan.”

When he saw her eyes widen, he was certain she was going to go into a faint, but then again, he wasn’t speaking with the ‘old’ Kagome. No, Kagome remained standing, nodding her head.

“Sure, but for what?”

”There’s a demon that’s been terrorizing the village close to where we stay. I’ve had a long-time grudge against this son-of-a-bitch for a while now.”

”Why’s that?”

Inuyasha sat down on the bench beneath the tree. It was a little over two months ago, on the night Kagome became the sole-owner of the Higurashi shrine. Beneath that tree, they promised to one another that everything would be alright. Kagome sat beside him, sitting her bag of groceries on the floor beside her feet.

“He wants Kikyou, obviously, but he can’t do anything with her until she has the baby. This is where things get really screwed up…See, even though we’re married and have been seeing each other for a long time, I never…gave her my mark.” He admitted with a small sigh.

”Your what?”

“Basically, it’s like this, to show we’re mates, I have to leave my marking upon her, stressing to humans and demons alike that she belongs to me.”

“She’s having your baby! That should be all of the marking that anyone needs!”

“Heh…it’s not that simple, Kagome. In demon laws and don’t forget, I am a half demon…Kikyou’s just some human woman who I just happened to pup. She’s not my mate and after she has the child, she’s fair game for any demon, unless I decide to give her my mark before then.”

“So why don’t you?!” Kagome glared at him.

“What would it matter now? This bastard Naraku doesn’t care if she bares my mark. Naraku is the worst type of demon and laws, human or demon, well…he less than follows them.”

Kagome tried to take in all of the information he was giving her. It seemed like Kikyou had a different life on the other side of the well; one Kagome would probably never come to understand.

“He’s been sending his strongest demonic armies to try and take Kikyou away from me, but I easily made short work of them. He reigns over the Eastern lands, while the lands my brother and I share are the Western lands.”

Kagome was going to ask what his brother was like, especially after having no prior knowledge that he had one, but she chose to stick to the topic at hand.

”So what do you need me for?”

“Naraku and I are going to do battle one more time to prove who’s worthy of Kikyou. I need you to protect her while I’m gone off to battle with this asshole.”

”But…!”

”I’ll definitely come back. Especially because when I win this thing, I’m going to put my mark upon her and make her mine forever.”

Inuyasha almost forgot who he was talking to, but when he looked at Kagome and saw the determined look in her eye, instead of tears at what he said, he knew that Kagome had gotten over him…much to his slight upset.

“Alright, I’ll protect Kikyou with everything I’ve got!”

”Thanks. You’ll have a little help while you’re there.”

”Help?”

”Allies of Kikyou and I; there is a demon slayer named Sango who will be staying behind with you to help keep the village safe.”

“A real demon slayer?! I’ve only read about them in my history books!”

”Well, they existed. Anyway, her own husband will be accompanying me as well, especially because his grudge against Naraku probably runs deeper than my own.”

”Grudge…?”

”Anyway, you should pack up for atleast…hell…maybe a week or so.”

”A week? But what about school and…”

“Well, Miroku and I are traveling all the way to the East to have this battle. Like I’d want it anywhere near the West where Kikyou might be in any danger. It’ll take is maybe three days to get to the border of the Eastern Lands and the Western Lands, maybe a day to kill Naraku and then three days coming back home. Atleast after this bastard’s dead, we can finally live in peace.”

Kagome nodded, but explained to him that she’d need the rest of the day to prepare. Inuyasha decided to give her until tomorrow morning and departed for the well. Kagome sighed heavily as she closed the doors to the wellhouse once he was gone. She headed inside and quickly placed a few phone calls to Kouga, who promised to excuse her from all of her classes and collect whatever homework she had and another to her friends, explaining, just as she did to Kouga, that she’d be in ‘Kyoto’. Kagome headed upstairs to her room and began to fish around for clothing to wear there; a week’s worth, to be exact. When she was content she had enough of the necessities to live in Inuyasha’s world for a week or so, she headed to the dojo and engaged herself in intense meditation and prayer, asking for the gods to give her strength, both physically, emotionally and mentally. After sitting for several hours in prayer and mediation, Kagome prepared her weapon of choice; her sister’s long bow and several arrows. Kagome knew that just from what Kikyou had and hadn’t told her, that Inuyasha’s world was a dangerous one. She knew she couldn’t risk being unprepared; it’d without a doubt be her downfall. The rest of the night for her after her preparation was standard; eat, do homework, take a bath and sleep. As she laid in her bed, staring up at the blank ceiling, she wondered what would be awaiting her just on the other side of the well.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kagome received her answer the next morning as Inuyasha came for her. What he definitely didn’t fail to notice was the fact she was wearing her school uniform that exposed her beautiful legs. He knew he’d have to be defending off some perverted men and demons alike. He sighed to himself; why couldn’t Kagome just wear something less revealing like her miko’s robes? Inuyasha saw the massive yellow bag with her and shot her a dirty look. Kagome just giggled and admitted she had packed just the necessities. Inuyasha hinted to the sword on his hip and said that that was his only ‘necessity’. Kagome just did some mental eye rolling. They stood on the lip of the well and Kagome stared down into the darkness, trying to swallow the fear that had lodged in her throat. She gasped when she felt Inuyasha’s hand on her hip. She looked at him and he nodded.

“You ready?”

”Y…yeah! Kikyou needs me, let’s go!”

With that, they jumped into the well together. Kagome was left in awe of the purple glow that surrounded them and the feeling of floating that made their bodies feel virtually weightless. Kagome looked at Inuyasha, her eyes widening when she saw his black hair turn silver and his bangs shadowing his eyes. The sound of wild dogs growling and howling manically surrounded him and Kagome closed her eyes, terrified by the noise. She wasn’t sure when they’d touch-downed, but when she opened her eyes once more, she found herself staring at a devastatingly handsome hanyou with long, silver eyes, dazzling amber eyes, fangs and claws; both she was certain could do massive amounts of damage on her human body.

“You okay?”

“Y…yeah.”

Kagome giggled as he twitched his ears for a moment and resisted the urge to pull them. As they climbed out of the well, Kagome found herself in a very beautiful forested area, with clean air and void of all of the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. In a nearby tree, sparrows flew off into the endlessly blue sky. Kagome’s eyes widened and she could only smile in pure happiness.

“Inuyasha, it’s so beautiful here…!”

“I’m glad you like it. I…”

”Hey, the Goshinboku!”

Before Inuyasha could stop her, she hurried off towards the large tree in the distance, stopping when she realized that the tree was much larger than the one in her time. She knew it had to do with the massive exposed roots of the tree that the Goshinboku in her time didn’t have.

“It’s so big…”

”Well, duh,” Inuyasha sighed, finally catching up with her.

He sat the large yellow bag on the ground with a small sigh.

“This tree only gets more powerful as it gets older. Hell, even the one in your time harnesses tremendous powers.”

“I never knew that…” Kagome said, looking up at the tree.

“Anyway, let’s get going. The village is just through this forest.”

Inuyasha grabbed her bag and Kagome followed in step with him through the beautiful forest. A sense of nostalgia must have overtaken Inuyasha at some point, because as they walked, he began talking about how he first met Kikyou and when he first brought her to his time. He talked about how they played as youngsters and trained together as well. Kagome could only listen at the soft tone of his voice and she knew that Inuyasha truly loved Kikyou.

“Well, here we are.”

Kagome looked around the quaint little village that looked like something out of a history book. Then again, she had to remember that she was five-hundred years back in the past. There were young girls, younger than her even, with two or three children with them, while the men worked hard on the huts, or other chore that the village needed to be done. There were vendors of all types and several animals, such as chickens running around. A few villagers greeted Inuyasha, but looked at Kagome as if she were the one dressed in all red with dog ears sticking out of the top of her head.

“Hey, Inuyasha-Sama is back!”

Kagome watched as several children hurried over to him. One little girl in a pink kimono jumped into his arms and hugged him happily.

“Inuyasha-Sama! Welcome back!”

“Saiyuri-Chan, how are things around here?”

”Bad. That stupid Naraku sent a huge weasel demon to the village!” one of the boys told him.

”What happened?”

“Kikyou-Sama took it down with one arrow! She’s so amazing!” Saiyuri giggled.

Kagome watched Inuyasha’s interactions with the children, both girls and boys. He was gentle with the little girls whereas he was more rough and playful with the boys. Finally, another little girl noticed Kagome and grabbed her hand.

“Inuyasha-Sama, is this Kikyou-samas’s sister?”

“Yes I am. How are you?”

”I’m fine! Kikyou-Sama talks about you all the time, Kagome-Sama!”

”Does she now?” Kagome giggled.

“All the damn time. The kids knew who you were in just a few days after we settled down here.” Inuyasha chuckled as one of the boys climbed on his back, while another boy swung from his arm.

”Well, how about we go and see her then?”

”Sounds good. Okay, kids, go play. I’ll come play with you later.”

”Okay, bye-bye!”

The kids hurried off and Inuyasha could only chuckle. Kagome smiled at him, cocking her head to the side.

”You’re really popular with the children, here, huh?”

”Yeah…little kids aren’t as judging as the adults about me being a half demon.”

“Oh…”

“Anyway, let’s go. I know Kikyou will be excited to see you.”

As they walked through the village, people bowed to her and Inuyasha, while some wondered where she had come from. Her clothes were nothing like they’d ever seen before and Kagome almost felt self-conscious. They approached a larger hut at the end of the village.

“We’re back, Kikyou.” He announced.

Kagome walked inside the hut and saw Kikyou sitting there with several herbs in her lap, her belly much rounder than before. Kikyou was not adorned in her usual miko’s garb, but a simple, light blue kimono.

“Kikyou!”

Kagome hurried over to her sister, kneeled in front of her and wrapped her arms around her sister tightly. It’d been almost a month and a half since she’d seen her sister in person. Letters delivered from Inuyasha once in a while just weren’t enough.

“Kagome-Chan, you look well. How are things?”

“Things are going great! I’m doing really well in school and the shrine is thriving very well. I have several people come and see me often. I’ve even helped deliver a baby!”

”Wonderful! Maybe you can help deliver mine as well.” Kikyou smiled.

Kagome blushed at the thought of helping to bring her sister’s child and her own niece or nephew into the world. Kagome could only nod her head. Kikyou gasped a little and then smiled at Kagome. She took her younger sister’s hand and placed it on her round stomach. Kagome could feel a slight kick and she quickly looked at Kikyou.

“It moved!”

”Maybe it’s ready to meet you.” Kikyou smiled gently.

Kagome could only smile. She was overjoyed to see her sister once more and know that her child was doing well.

“Shall we walk, Kagome-Chan?”

”Can you?”

”The exercise will be good for me. Inuyasha, will you be okay here?”

”Yeah, don’t worry. I’m supposed to be meeting Miroku pretty soon.”

“Miroku…?” Kagome asked.

“Ah, yes, he’s a powerful monk and Sango-San’s husband. You’ll meet them soon, I’m sure. But, for now, let us take a walk.”

Kikyou stood up and motioned for Kagome to follow her. As they walked through the village, several people bowed to them as they passed, bowing even to Kagome. Word had quickly spread that Kagome was Kikyou’s younger sister and by that, demanded just as much respect as Kikyou herself.

“Kagome-Chan, what do you think of our village?”

”It’s really amazing! It’s hard to believe I’m five-hundred years in the past.”

“Yes, it can be a little overwhelming at first, but you seem to be adjusting just fine. Inuyasha and I protect this village, but it’s mostly Inuyasha who does the protecting. Ever since I retired from being a priestess, I only use my powers for healing and purifications.”

“I can’t believe you protect a village this big!”

”Don’t be silly, Kagome. There are several other villages outside of this one and they are much, much bigger!” Kikyou giggled.

Their walk led them into the forest once more, where they stopped to rest by a nearby stream. Kikyou sat down with a small sigh and cupped the water in her hands before drinking it.

“Wow, is the water that clean around here?”

”Of course! The water is free of pollution of any sort. This land is much environmentally better than ours. Which is why I want to raise our child in it.”

”But, Kikyou,”

Kagome sat down next to her sister, never imagining she’d be talking so casually with her sister.

“This is Feudal Japan. There are wars, demons…”

”We do our best to stay out of the way of both, and if any demon ever does attack, Inuyasha and I do our best to protect the village. Bandits don’t dare approach this village, especially knowing that the son of the great Inu No Taishou protects it.”

”Who is that?”

”He is Inuyasha’s late father. He was a grand dog demon that claimed the Western Lands, these lands, as his territory. It is because Inuyasha is around that we are able to breath in peace from any problems other villages might have.”

“And what about Naraku?” Kagome asked, looking at the pond.

“Naraku is…a despicable demon, who, for the sake of our village and child, must be destroyed. I’m so fearful for Inuyasha, because he and Naraku have fought before. Naraku is probably the most evil demon in all of the lands.”

”But…!”

“Kagome, I know you are worried and that is why I am asking you to stay with me while Inuyasha is gone. Because of the strain I put on the baby whenever I use my powers in a combative style, I cannot protect myself as well as I used to be able to. But, I know with you by my side, I’ll be just fine.”

Kagome turned a slight shade of red when Kikyo put her hand to the side of her cheek.

“I know, because you are maturing into a beautiful young woman and your aura is twice as strong than it was when we last saw each other.”

”R…really?”

”Honestly. I know…I should feel a little ashamed for asking you to come here, from a completely different time to help me, but…”

“Never! I’ll always be able to help you! No matter what!”

Kikyou embraced her younger sister with a joyful sigh. Kikyou had missed her so much…

“Well, shall we return to the village? I’m certain Miroku and Sango have arrived by this point.”

“Alright then.”

Helping Kikyou stand, Kagome and Kikyou made their way back to the village where they were greeted by a beautiful young woman in a pink kimono and a monk dressed in purple. After introductions, Kikyou insisted she cook for everyone tonight. Kagome could only smile and give a slight sigh. For the next week, this would be her life. She looked at Inuyasha as they all sat down by the fire to eat that evening and prayed that she’d be able to keep her feelings for him under wraps. Kagome refused to agree with whomever said ‘time changes things’. She was still in love with Inuyasha and she knew no matter how many things changed, her feelings for him never would.

Selina MacCloveror: I knew the second I ended the last chapter, all I could think was “Selina is probably gonna spear me now for leaving it like that” XD. But fear not! It is NOT the end!!!!
