Stand-off and Kagome’s Illness
Chapter 12:
Kagome woke the next morning and was stiff everywhere. She looked around at the cave and sighed. Kagome got up and went to check the barrier she put up the nigh before. It was still up strong and she could feel a demon on the other side of it. Suddenly Sesshomaru stepped up to the barrier and looked down at her.
“You will let this Sesshomaru past the barrier.” Kagome grabbed her throat with one hand and shook her head. She slowly backed up further into the cave. “Miko, you will stop.” Kagome stopped backing up but made no move to let him through.
“I’m sorry Sesshomaru-sama. I can’t let you through right now.” Kagome dropped her hands to her side and turned her back on the demon lord.
“You are hurt.” Kagome looked back at him and then down at herself. She was covered in scratches and some deeper cuts but none were open or seeping blood. Her kimono was ruined and she felt sad over it.
“I’m sorry about the kimono. I didn’t mean to ruin it, but I’m fine. I’m well on my way to healing.” Kagome walked back into the cave and sat down against the wall.
“You are hungry.” She heard his voice echo in the cave and Kagome sighed and hugged herself.
“You don’t care about me, so just go away.” She felt the demon lord move away from the barrier and tears started to slid down her cheeks. She knew she was right and he didn’t are about her. She felt so tired all of a sudden and laid down to get more sleep. When she woke a few hours latter she felt that Sesshomaru was back at the barrier. She walked the cave mouth and stared. Sesshomaru had a fire going and was cooking fish. Kagome’s stomach made hungry noises at the smells that were coming from the fire. Sesshomaru looked up and gestured toward the fire.
“Come. Eat.” Sesshomaru moved the fish a little farther from the fire and sat back against a tree. Kagome looked at the fish and then back at the demon lord. She was curious but was not ready to give in yet. Kagome turned around without speaking and walked back into the cave. She decided to explore while there was light coming from outside. She followed the cave a bit further back and heard rushing water. She went further and found an underground spring being fed from a waterfall. Kagome sent her senses out and found no more openings to the cave. She stripped from the kimono and sank into the warm water. Kagome sighed and before she knew it she was asleep at the edge of the pond.
Kagome woke later and dragged her self out of the water and into her kimono. She was so tired. She felt Sesshomaru poking at her barrier and sent more energy into it. He backed away from it but stayed close by. Kagome felt even more drained and weakly made her way back to the mouth of the cave. She leaned weakly against the side of the cave and watched Sesshomaru get up from his tree and come to the barrier.
“You are ill.” Kagome shook her head.
“I’m just tired, is all. I’m fine.” Kagome sank down to the ground and rested her head against the wall. Sesshomaru sat outside and watched her.
“You are poisoned.” Kagome shook her head again.
“I’m fine.” Sesshomaru pulled up his left sleeve and showed Kagome the mark. It was pulsing from blue to green.
“It has been getting worse all day.” Kagome nodded and closed her eyes again.
“I’m not letting you in. I’m going to fine. I just need some sleep.” Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes at the miko.
“When you are too weak to maintain the barrier properly I will break it.” Kagome opened her eyes and looked at Sesshomaru.
“Okay, I’m going to lie down and get some sleep.” Kagome curled up by the barrier and closed her eyes again. She drifted in and out of consciousness. She felt her barrier fall and knew that he was right about the poison. She just couldn’t bring herself to care about it. Then she felt air rush by her face. Then there was nothing but black and soothing calm. There was nothing for her to worry about. No demons or half demons that she had to please. Nothing. Then she felt the pull.
It was familiar but it brought in the emotions she didn’t want to deal with; pain, love, fear. She fought the pull until she was floating in the blackness again. Kagome smiled and relaxed once more into the comfort of nothing. When she felt the pull again is was stronger and she could not fight it. Slowly she made her way back into consciousness. She felt the pain in her body as well as the overwhelming urge to fall asleep again. She heard a growl and slowly opened her eyes. Sesshomaru stood there looking at a small owl demon and growling.
“Explain.” The owl demon bowed to Sesshomaru.
“I am not powerful enough to fight this poison. The miko has the power but she doesn’t seem to be willing to use it to heal herself. If she does not than she will die.” Kagome liked his voice. It was deep and soothing. A wave of pain swept through her body and she saw a glow from Sesshomaru’s arm when it happened. Kagome gasped at the felling and instantly Sesshomaru was next to her and laid his hand on her head. The pain stopped and Kagome sighed. She saw his hand when he drew it away and Kagome grabbed it weakly. She brought it closer to her face and frowned. All over his hand were very thin green spider-like markings. They faded back up his arm after a few seconds.
Kagome dropped his hand and tried to sit up. The owl demon stepped toward her and she shook her head. After a minute she was exhausted but was sitting against the headboard. Kagome closed her eyes for a moment before opening them again.
“Come here Sesshomaru.” Sesshomaru stepped closer to her and sat on the edge of the bed. Kagome reached out and ripped his right sleeve off. There was her mark but it was not normal. The tear drop was bright green and spreading out from that mark were the thin green lines. “You’re taking the poison away.” Kagome laid her head back and sighed. She reached out and touched the tear drop. Instantly it was bright blue again and the green lines slowly faded from his skin. Kagome was pale when it was done and she let her head drop back again. Sesshomaru looked down at his arm and then to the owl demon.
“Leave us.” The owl bowed deeply and left the room. Sesshomaru looked down at the miko and ran his claws gently down the side of her face.
“You will heal yourself.” Kagome turned her head away from the demon lord, dislodging his fingers.
“Just let me sleep.” Sesshomaru pulled her face back to look at him. His hand caressed her face gently.
“You cannot sleep. You will die if you do not heal yourself.” Kagome leaned into the hand and sighed.
“Everyone would be better off if I wasn’t around.” Sesshomaru growled at her softly.
“I did not think you were a liar, miko.” Kagome glared up that the demon lord and then sighed again.
“I don’t think that I’m a liar.” Sesshomaru released her face.
“There are many who would miss you.” Sesshomaru looked down at the miko. “Your kit, my pup, your friends from the village, theses people would miss you.” Kagome felt tears fill her eyes as she looked up at him.
“Would you?” Sesshomaru looked down at the miko with his indifferent features in silence for a moment. Kagome sighed and looked away again as the tears began to fall from her eyes. Sesshomaru pulled her face back and gently kissed her. It was soft and gentle. His lips were warm and the moment she began to kiss him back she felt a warmth flow through her entire body. Sesshomaru pulled back as a blue light engulfed Kagome. Kagome felt so warm and she wasn’t in pain anymore. She saw blue everywhere and then she felt a soothing touch on her face. The last thing she saw was Midoriko smile at her.
“Not yet child. Be happy.” Kagome fell into the comforting embrace of darkness and knew she would be fine.
