Unrequited Love

Chapter 13

(After 3 more months)

“No you can’t do this to me.” Rin pleaded with their babysitter.

“I’m sorry but my grandmother is in the hospital and mom said we all have to go see her.” The sixteen year old baby sitter, Jenny, apologized.

“Sess is going to kill me.” Rin whined.

“Sorry.” Jenny said again then hung up.

“Where am I going to find someone on such short notice?” She chewed on her lip frantically as her eyes looked over to her little hellions, Mickie and Emi. Their giggles were joyous and full of life but she knew there was a darker side to those little angel faces and few could handle them. Of all things she had to be blessed with twins the first time she got pregnant but at least Sess insisted they wait for a while before having any more. Grumbling she pulled out her address book and started to make calls. After almost an hour of no luck she finally decided to call the only other person who ever got along with her kids. It would be tricky but it was a chance she would have to take. She was desperate. She flipped through her address book once more until she settled on the office number of her uncle, Myoga. She listened to it ring only a couple of times before she heard a familiar voice.

“Martin & Springs, how can I assist you?” The gentle voice said happily. Rin had to smile. Even after everything she sounded like she was doing alright. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea.

“Hey Kagome this is Rin, how are you doing?” Rin replied happily.

“I’m good and how are you doing? It’s been a while since we talked. There isn’t anything wrong with Inuyasha is there?” She asked worriedly.

“No, no he’s good. Been keeping himself busy with his business. But actually I’m not so good hun. I have a problem.” Rin figured she would get right to the point and get the rejection over with quickly so she could go on.

“Oh what’s wrong?” Kagome asked worriedly.

“Well I know this is sudden and I wouldn’t be calling if I really didn’t need the help.” Rin started to babble quickly avoiding the actual problem trying to think of an alternative.

“Rin, stop beating around the bush. If I can help you I will. Now tell me what is wrong.” Kagome said sternly.

“I’m caught in a tough spot here. Sess has this really important dinner meeting where he has to be there with me. It’s with the chairman of the company he works for. The guy is really family oriented and wants to meet all the department head’s wives. My baby sitter can’t make it. I’ve called everyone I know that might be able to handle the kids. I even tried Inuyasha but he said he had some late work that couldn’t wait. I’m sorry for asking but I really need you to watch them for me.” Rin pleaded almost in tears.

“Oh no problem. I don’t have any plans. But I won’t get off for another 30 minutes then 15 home so you can drop them by then.” Kagome answered sweetly. “Its been so long since I’ve seen them I’m actually excited.” She giggled.

“Well there’s another problem. I don’t have time to drive them all the way there and still have time to get ready.” Rin chewed on her lip knowing this might make her change her mind.

“Oh I see.” Kagome said timidly. “Umm....does Sess know about...”

“No I never told him. I figured if he didn’t know then Inuyasha couldn’t get mad at him for not telling him if he found out. Not that I don’t trust Sess to keep secrets but their relationship is stressed already.” Rin said hopefully.

“I don’t know.” Kagome hesitated as she thought about it. Rin really did need her help and up till now she didn’t have a way to repay her for helping her when she was so distraught over her heart break.

“I know this is kind of sudden and all but I wouldn’t have called if it wasn’t important. Sess has a chance here to really shine and may get a chance at a better position in the company. Maybe I should just forget about it. I’ll keep trying.” Rin said decidedly. Kagome cringed at the disappointment in Rin’s voice. This could mean a lot to them financially too. She scrunched her face up making a decision that could be her undoing but for Rin she would chance it.

“Well if I can manage to stay hidden until you guys leave then I can bring the kids home with me and you can pick them up after.” Kagome said hesitantly. This was taking a big risk but Rin really did need her. She frowned to herself. It had been well over 9 months and so many things had changed in her life. Inuyasha probably forgot all about her by now and wouldn’t give a shit if he ever saw her again after she left like that. It still hurt to think about him at times when she was alone at night and she regretted not talking to him face to face but she also knew that she wouldn’t have been able to resist his pleading with her not to leave. She had thought about asking Rin what was going on with him when at the same time she was afraid of finding out he was happier without her. In her heart she was convinced he was better off without her and the problems she caused.

“Really you mean it?” Rin exclaimed excitedly. “Yeah we can do this. Sess won’t have much time to get ready as it is. We’ll just keep you in the kid’s room or something until we leave then I’ll pick them up at your place. You sure you’ll have room for both car seats?” Rin replied chewing on her lip trying to think of ways to keep her husband occupied so he didn’t see Kagome. Not that he would say anything but then again he might.

“Yeah no problem. I owe you anyway. You helped me so much. I wouldn’t have this job and the apartment if not for you. I really appreciate all the help.” Kagome said happily.

“Ok if you think you can do this then we’ll give it a try. I’ll see you around 5:30.” Rin said with relief.

“I’ll see you then.” Kagome chimed back before hanging up.

When the door bell rang Rin was in the kitchen serving the kids dinner. “You going to get that?” Sesshomaru yelled from the bedroom as he rushed to put on his tux.

“Yeah.” Rin answered as she ran to answer it so Kagome didn’t ring again aggravating Sesshomaru. She quickly opened the door and wrapped her arms around Kagome. “You’re looking great.” Rin hugged her close then stepped back taking the small bundle from her arms. Carefully she pulled the blue blanket free and peered into the sleeping face of a cute baby boy. “He’s absolutely adorable Kagome. Are you doing ok?” She asked as she helped Kagome bring in the small diaper bag and carry-all.

“We’re good. He sleeps all night and Myoga said I could bring him to work until he starts to crawl. But then I can leave him at the day care in the building.” Kagome beamed with pride as Rin cooed over her son. Rin pulled back the blanket more to reveal the full head of soft white baby hair. She smiled widely.

“Seems the hair runs in the family. What did you name him?” Rin giggled as she rubbed his little head gently.

“Yeah I kind of guessed it would. I named him Kin.” Kagome smiled back thinking of how both of their kids had Sess’ hair. “Where are the kids?” She asked with excitement. She had always loved Rin and Sess’ kids. They were so much fun. She couldn’t wait until Kin was a little older so she could play with him like she did their kids.

“Oh they’re in the kitchen eating. Lets take this one in so they can meet their cousin.” Rin replied and walked into the kitchen door with Kagome close behind. Unknown to the women a white haired man stepped back into the hall toward his bedroom as they moved to the door that went to the kitchen. A frown marred his handsome face in discontent. With out another thought he closed the bedroom door and pulled out his cell phone.

“If you’re calling about baby sitting I already told Rin I couldn’t.” Inuyasha answered with out even saying hello.

“Until a few moments ago, I was unaware that we needed one. But that is not why I called.” Sesshomaru replied cooly.

“Alright so what did you call me for then?” Inuyasha asked stopping the work he was doing to listen. It wasn’t like Sesshomaru to call him out of the blue. They might have made up but they still weren’t as close as most brothers. Even though he had come to rely on Sesshomaru over the past months as someone to confide in and for financial advice.

“I thought you might be interested in the baby sitter that Rin found.” Sesshomaru said baiting him.

“Why would I be interested in who you got as a baby sitter. I ain’t interested in anyone.” Inuyasha said huffily ready to hang up.

“Oh you would be more then interested in this one since she’s the woman you’ve been trying to find for almost a year now.” Sesshomaru chuckled as Inuyasha stammered.

“Ka..go...me?” Inuyasha stuttered feeling like his heart was in his throat at the thought.

“The one and only. You will also be interested in the white haired fellow she has with her.” Sesshomaru went on.

“A guy? She has a guy with her? Shit, this is the closest I get to finding her and she has some old guy with her.” Inuyasha began taking his coveralls off as he wiped his hands on a grease rag. “Fuck that. It ain’t happening until I get a chance to speak my peace. I’ll be there in about 20 minutes.” He said already locking the doors to leave.

“I’ll keep them occupied.” Sesshomaru said as he hung up. He looked toward the closed door as the wheels in his mind turned. His eyes slowly moved over to the closet spying the green dress Rin was going to wear but had changed her mind at the last minute. He opened his cell once again and made an excuse to his boss explaining they would be a little late due to a babysitter problem. With a smirk he took the dress from the closet and headed toward the kitchen. “Rin.” He called as he walked through the swinging door startling both women. “I think you’re right. This one would look more...” He lifted his eyes acting surprised to see Kagome standing there. “Kagome? How nice to see you again.” He offered with a sweet smile making her blush. “How have you been? I didn’t know we were expecting you tonight?” He looked over at his wife with narrowed eyes. Rin bit her lip and looked away.

“Oh well, she is baby setting for us tonight because Jenny couldn’t.” Rin explained quickly.

“I was unaware that you were keeping in contact since things went down hill with my brother.” He held back the sneer but his eyes never left Rin’s.

“Oh well actually we haven’t really been in contact that much. Just sort of ran into each other one day.” Kagome supplied feeling horrible about lying but wanted to help Rin somehow. He nodded then his golden gaze quickly settled on the small bundle in Rin’s arms and he cocked his head to the side curiously.

“And what do we have here?” He laid the dress on a chair then walked over to Rin before she could move taking the small baby from her and holding him in front of his eyes. “How delightful. A boy I would presume by the blue blanket?” He looked over at Kagome who merely nodded.“I had no idea you were expecting. We will have to catch up but for now I was thinking about this dress.” Smoothly he turned back to Rin directing her attention toward the green dress as he cradled Kagome’s baby in his arm. “I think you are right. This one would be better.” He said with a sparkle in his eye. Rin flushed looking down at her dress and shoes then back at the green dress.

“We don’t have time for me to change.” She said quickly.

“I’m sure if Kagome helps you then we will only be fashionably late. Besides, I heard the chairman likes green.” Sesshomaru insisted as he wiggled a finger near one of the baby’s small hands watching fascinated as the small tike’s golden eyes followed the movement of his finger then he quickly latched onto it. “Strong, that is good.” He said to no one in particular. His eyes looked up at the two women who were still standing there. “Well get going. The sooner you change the sooner we leave.” He insisted with a roll of his eyes. “I can watch these guys.” He shooed them away with a wave of his hand. They glanced at each other but hurried out of the room. It wasn’t long before he heard the front door open. He barely made it to the door before Inuyasha began yelling.

“Where the fuck is he?” Inuyasha said hotly. Not even noticing the baby in his brother’s arms.

“He’s right here.” Sesshomaru stood there holding the baby slightly away from his body as an offering to quell his brother’s anger. Inuyasha looked at him with wild eyes that soon settled on the small blue bundle of wiggling flesh.

“What the hell is that?” He asked shocked.

“I believe it would be considered a baby.” Sesshomaru answered him amused.

“I know that, I meant who’s is that?” He asked a bit calmer. Sesshomaru stepped closer offering the small baby to him.

“I believe he is your son.” Sesshomaru answered him and placed the baby in his brother’s arms. Inuyasha looked down into the small face with wonder as the baby looked back with what could be considered the same expression. Sure he had seen babies before but this one was different. He could feel it inside instinctively. He knew with out a doubt this was a small life that he had a part in making. How many other guys had silver white hair and golden eyes besides his father, who was dead, and his brother. Pride began to fill him then he remembered who the mother was and how she tried to hide his child from him. Something inside of him twisted at the thought. Just then the bedroom door opened as Rin stepped out. Her head was down as she brushed lint from the black dress she was wearing.

“I think I like the black one better honey.” She said but looked up when Kagome gasped. Rin’s eyes became large when they settled on Inuyasha standing there holding his son. Kagome pushed past her but stopped short at the glare Inuyasha sent her.

“I...I...um...oh shit.” She stammered unable to think of something to say.

“Yeah oh shit.” Inuyasha sneered back. “We need to talk little girl and I don’t mean over the phone.” Inuyasha said hotly as he handed the baby back to Sesshomaru. Kagome’s eyes followed the exchange as her hand reached out toward her son.

“But we need to leave. Can’t you talk to her some other time?” Rin offered trying to defuse the confrontation.

“Let them have their talk. I’ve already spoken to the chairman and he said to take all the time we needed.” Sesshomaru grinned at the deflated look on Rin’s face. “Besides, it seems you have some explaining of your own my wife.” Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes at Rin. She gulped then looked at Kagome apologetically. Inuyasha took a step toward Kagome but she stepped back still staring at her son in Sesshomaru’s arms. Her eyes flickered back at Inuyasha then back to her son as the fear began to build in her chest.

“I can’t do this. Not yet.” She choked as she took another step back from his advancing form.

“Too bad. This is long over due. You’re going to tell me what...” Was all he got out before she spun around and dashed toward the patio doors that led to the back yard. “Kagome get your ass back here.” He snapped and took up the chase surprised she could move so fast in those heeled shoes and short skirt. She dashed around the picnic table and turned to look at him as he faced off with her.

“I think every thing is pretty much self explanatory. You’re smart figure it out.” She huffed breathing quickly to catch her breath. It had only been a few months since she gave birth and she was still a bit worn out from the pregnancy. A few tear tracks lingered on her cheeks but he could see she was getting better at controlling her emotions. She was stronger now.

“There are a few details that just seem to elude me.” He narrowed his eyes as he watched her body movements hoping he would be able to predict her moves.

“Like what?” She danced to one side only to have him block her escape.

“Like how long did you know before you left?” Inuyasha jumped to one side faking her out but she didn’t fall for it and countered back quickly as she raced over to a large tree getting her closer to the door back in. Her face paled but she schooled her features and glared at him.

“A couple of days before I walked in on you and Kikyo at the apartment that night.” She admitted with hurt lingering in her eyes. He stood back and looked at her. She had known for some time and still left without telling him.

“Why didn’t you say something?” He asked seriously unable to look at her as his own emotions of hurt filled him. She took that opportunity to dash toward the door but to her dismay he was faster. She soon found herself pinned against the side of the house by his body a few feet from the door. She pushed against his broad chest relentlessly with one hand as the other smacked his arm with her fist, her legs flailed out trying to kick. With little effort he grabbed her bare right leg and brought it up so that he was snuggled between her legs securely then he easily grabbed her wrists and pinned them above her head.

“Let me go Inuyasha.” She demanded as she fought against the tears that brimmed her eyes.

“Not until you answer me.” He insisted angrily. She looked at him with deep seated sorrow and pain.

“And what if I had. What would you have done?” Her eyes searched his but he kept them school to hold back his emotions. It was something he seemed to master over the past months so he could keep his heart sheltered.

“I would have been there.” He said earnestly. The tears in her eyes increased but she refused to let them fall.

“That is why I couldn’t tell you.” Her lip trembled with pent up emotion. “You would have given up your happiness because you would feel obligated. I couldn’t do that to you.” His eyes softened now understanding what her words from that last phone call meant. All this time they had haunted his dreams leaving him in a state of confusion. “I couldn’t stay with you when you would have ended up regretting everything we shared. I didn’t want to live with you knowing I kept you from being with the person you loved most.” She hung her head as her fight against the tears began to sway.

“Don’t you think that was my decision?” He asked feeling hurt she didn’t even trust him enough to let him decide for himself.

“Maybe but at the same time, I didn’t want our baby growing up in the same situation I did. I wanted him to be happy with his life and not feel like he was a burden to his parents and the excuse of every fight.” She sobbed. “I was being selfish I know but...” He could understand why she felt like that. Even though she never talked about her life much before she met Kouga, he knew it wasn’t easy for her. “I never wanted you to find out like this. I’m sorry but I didn’t want to come between you and Kikyo.” She cried more and leaned her forehead against his shoulder. He finally released her hands so he could hold her in his arms like he dreamed of every night since she disappeared.

“You won’t come between us.” He whispered softly in her ear. “I decided before that night at the apartment that I didn’t want to be with Kikyo anymore. I don’t know what she said to you but it was probably lies or wishful thinking on her part. You just never gave me a chance to tell you.” He hugged her closer as she began to shutter from her sobs. Her arms tightened around his neck as if he was her life line. “I wanted to tell you then how much you mean to me but I was just so shocked I couldn’t get it out. I blew my chance.” He kissed the top of her head then laid his cheek on it rocking her back and forth gently. “I realized after you left how hard it is to go on every day without your smile. Baby or no baby, I would have felt the same. The same way I do now.” He leaned back as he placed a hand on her cheek pulling her face up to look him in the eyes. Her own were puffy and red from crying but she still looked more beautiful to him then any other woman he ever met. “I love you Kagome. I have for a long time and I just can’t stop feeling like this.” His eyes searched her wide shocked ones. He hoped and prayed that she still felt the same.

“I...” she stammered not sure if she could let her heart go again so easily. For months she had schooled her heart to feel nothing again and focused all her energy on her baby. She closed her eyes and swallowed hard. For him to admit his love to her was something she never expected and it wasn’t like the Inuyasha she knew from before. She looked up into his worried eyes and could see the concern but past that was something she never expected, admiration and love. “I love you too.” She smiled shyly. They stared into each other’s eyes for a few moments then slowly his head leaned forward capturing her lips with his. The kiss was gently and filled with all the love he felt in his heart for her. After a few moments it became more as the pent up longing began to spread through them both.

“Could you hold off on that. We really do need to be going and I don’t think Rin would appreciate our children seeing live action porn.” Sesshomaru’s deep voice interrupted their passion. Kagome looked away embarrassed.

“Yeah we’re coming in.” Inuyasha replied without looking at him. His golden eyes remained on the woman in his arms. Gently he took her hand in his and led her into the house.
