Arena looked up, her eyes wide and her mouth gaping at the sight before her. She had seen nothing like it before. Not even when she was travelling in the woods of Northern Saskatchewan and she had seen the sky afire with blue, green and red Aurora Borealis. The sky had grown dark and there was a huge glow in the shape of, well, it was really a fuzzy caterpillar! The red glow stretched halfway across the dark sky. The edge of the glowing light was bright red but darkened as it neared the centre until it became a sharp black line. The blackness inside the glow was the darkest thing Arena had ever seen. As everyone stared at the phenomenon in the sky they saw it grow wider. The gap continued to grow and something started to come out of it. Everyone gasped as more debris was flying towards them.

“Sesshomaru, we have to find cover!” Arena shouted. InuYasha noticed Arena’s panick and turned to look at his friends. Everyone else was unconscious. There was no way he could get Kagome, Sango and Miroku under cover. Ignoring Naraku, he grabbed Kagome and threw her over his shoulder. InuYasha then ran over to Sango and grabbing her under her arms dragged the two women back to the shelter of the caves.

“Sorry, Miroku” he growled.

Up on the cliff Sesshomaru grabbed Arena and jumped out of the way just as a huge foot came flying at them. The foot was grossly oversized, the large toe was bigger than Arena.

“Gods, Sesshomaru, that was close”, Arena subconsiously tightened her arms around Sesshomaru’s neck as she thought about the size of that foot falling on the both of them "it would be quite ironic to have been squished by a colossal statue of Nero", Sesshomaru looked at her, his eyes displaying his confusion, "nevermind, I'll tell you later" she said. Sesshomaru felt her arms tighten around him and he looked down to see her eyes wide. It briefly puzzled him as to why Arena would be so afraid now when she had previously endured so much. Little matter, he would worry about that later. He wrapped his arms around her waist and looked around for a place to go. He glanced down at the canyon floor and noticed that Naraku and his minions had dissapeared. Sesshomaru leapt into the air and landed gracefully in the middle of the canyon and brought Arena into the cave network. InuYasha, meanwhile, had dragged Miroku into shelter. Luckily, he was spared any of the falling debris. Sesshomaru untangled Arena’s arms from behind his neck and looked down at her. She had that same distracted look on her face, like she was figuring something important out.

“What happened to Naraku?” Sesshomaru asked.

“He got hit by some of the debris and Kagura whisked him away on her feather, the cowards!” InuYasha growled, still holding an unconscious Kagome in his arms.

“You mean after all that he was finally taken out by a falling rock?” Arena asked smiling, “when this is over I want to see what hit him”.

“Arena, can you…?” InuYasha looked at her with pleading eyes.

“Oh InuYasha, I am so sorry. I will try of course. But so many people are injured. Sesshomaru has a huge gash in his side, and my ankle is completely torn up. I do not even think I can walk.” Arena looked heartbroken at her own impotence.

“I’m sorry, Arena, of course I cannot ask you to heal anyone if your lifeforce itself is damaged. So, um…who are you going to heal first? Sesshomaru?”

Arena looked at InuYasha. Why would he ask if she would heal Sesshomaru first? She had to be careful about what she said because she knew InuYasha was worried sick over Kagome’s injuries, especially since they were caused by Kikyo. She looked at Sesshomaru’s wound. “No, InuYasha, I cannot heal Sesshomaru or I will be out of it for too long, and we need to get moving! Besides, it looks like he is already healing himself. Sango merely looks unconscious, and Miroku needs to recover his own lifeforce. Kagome is the most important charge right now. Bring her over to a place near the fire where I can sleep. Oh, and InuYasha, please let us get out of here soon. This place is giving me the creeps!”

“Okay, Sesshomaru can carry you when it is time to go!” InuYasha said to her. Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes and was about to deny that he would ever carry the human when he realized his stomach flipped pleasantly at the thought of carrying Arena. Suddenly InuYasha stopped and turned around. “Wait a second, Arena, what do you mean you will be out for too long if you heal Sesshomaru?”

“Exactly that, InuYasha”, Arena answered, looking away.

“But Kouga made you sleep for a day and a half. Sesshomaru couldn’t require that much more lifeforce, he isn’t even that badly hurt.”

“But Sesshomaru is much more powerful than Kouga, speaking of Kouga, did anyone bring him out of the line of fire?”

“Don’t try and change the subject, Arena, how do you know Sesshomaru takes longer to heal? Did you heal him before??” InuYasha was started to get angry when realization suddenly hit him, “It was you!! You’re the one who gave the bastard back his arm. Why, Arena? He’s tried to kill me and Kagome.”

“If I recall correctly, InuYasha, it is you who is the bastard”, Sesshomaru drawled.

“You stay out of this Sesshomaru!” Arena snapped at him. “Now listen here, InuYasha, I healed Sesshomaru a long time ago. I didn’t even know who he was, and it was certainly before I had met any of you. Besides, I have said to you time and again, I do not differentiate between enemies and allies. When I see someone who needs my help, I help them. If I don’t, then I might as well be the murderer. I may be a lot of things, but I am NOT a murderer.” InuYasha was a little taken aback by Arena’s sudden outburst, he backed off a little bit and refrained himself from mentioning that Sesshomaru could have lived without his arm, but he was still seething with anger. He glared at Sesshomaru and then at Arena.

“We will see about that, but for now, I’m not helping you. You better get your lover to carry you when we leave because we are not waiting for you,” and with that InuYasha stalked off deeper into the caves. Arena sighed and took a step towards the new fire. She winced as fresh pain flared up in her ankle that Kohaku had ensnared.

“Well, Sesshomaru, it looks like it is just us. Damn my ankle hurts. Sometimes InuYasha can be so sensitive. Would you be so kind as to help me to where Kagome is. I’m afraid I cannot walk at the moment.” Sesshomaru was already moving towards Arena. He picked her up effortlessly and took her to Kagome’s side.

“Do not let my brother's words distress you, Arena. He is worried about Kagome and said things to you that he doesn’t mean. I am sure when the time comes he will be at your side to protect you from harm.” Sesshomaru looked down at Arena with soft eyes and as he lowered her to the ground he sat himself beside her. She felt herself lost in his intense gaze before she caught herself, realizing where they were.

“I suppose you are right, however, Sesshomaru, I would feel a lot better if you would watch over me out for a few hours. If it isn’t too much trouble that is…”

“Of course I will take care of you” Sesshomaru whispered huskily. His face was only a few inches from her own, and her scent was bewitching him. She smelled like a mixture of roses, and something else, he couldn't quite pin it down, and it was really starting to annoy him. The memory of her body pressed to his as they flew down to the canyon floor, short as it was, sent shivers through Sesshomaru's body. He wanted to be closer to her, to touch her, and to be touched. He was finding himself completely lost by the feelings he was having for this human. Arena was similarly almost totally lost in Sesshomaru’s gaze when she felt Sesshomaru move his hand to her face as he touched a stray curl that had fallen down in front of her eyes. As he brushed it away his caress was cool and gentle against her cheek. His eyes started to deepen, and Arena could not help herslef thinking that this was the worst possible time for Sesshomaru to actually start showing some emotion.

“boethei emoi iatreuein”, she whispered and felt the lifeforce draining from her body. ‘Could Sesshomaru actually have feelings for me?’ was her last thought before everything faded away to darkness.

Kagome awoke and looked around. She was startled to see that InuYasha was not present, and only saw an unconscious Sango and Miroku in one corner, and Rin, Shippou and Kirara huddled quietly together in a corner. She turned and saw Sesshomaru kneeling beside her. She started to get worried at how close he was to her when she saw what he held in his lap.

“Oh Arena, I feel so bad every time you have to heal me. There are so many others who need it so much more.” Kagome whispered to the unconscious woman beside her.

“Actually, Kagome, you were the one that needed it the most. But there is something you should know. Arena told InuYasha that she was the one who attached my left arm. It was a long time ago, before she met any of you, and yet InuYasha did not like that she helped me. His worry over you increased his anger at this revelation. He stalked off in that direction into the caves. However, if you can find him I do believe he would like to know that you are well.” Sesshomaru told her.

“Thank you for telling me, Sesshomaru. I will try and talk some sense into him. I already suspected such regarding your arm. I personally do not see why that should be a problem, family should get along better. After all, with your father dead neither of you can ever have any more brothers. But then, InuYasha always sees things differently.” Kagome was almost dumbfounded at Sesshomaru’s kindness. She got up and headed towards the depths of the cave calling for InuYasha. Sesshomaru was similarly dumbfounded as he pondered Kagome's philosophical words.

okay okay so I borrowed that last statement of Kagome's from Sophocles, however, he has been dead for 2400 odd years so I don't think he can copywrite it. Just in case: philosophy borrowed from Sophocles' "Antigone"
