Fort Lee, NJ

Sesshoumaru walked down the street, trying to familiarize himself with the town that he chosen to take up residence in. It seemed to be a typical suburban town, with nothing special to recommend it. Except her. She was here somewhere. It would have been easy enough to make a few phone calls and find out exactly where she was, but he felt horrible enough at the steps he had taken so far. What was the word these Americans used? Ah yes, stalker. He did not wish to become her stalker. That was not his intention. He had felt bad when he lied about moving to America, but with his resources, he had been able to make it a reality within hours of telling her. His resources had also been able to find out what town she lived in. He had found and leased an apartment in three days. And now he was here. It had all ready been a week since that night at the club, but she hadn’t called him yet. His cell phone rang constantly with business calls, but not a single one from her. Every time an unfamiliar number showed up on his call id, he prayed it was her. To hear her voice say his name. But it never was.

He sighed as he walked over to a park. He had found this park on his first day here. It was small and quiet. He found it pleasing to his senses and came here every day. He chose a tree to sit under and made himself comfortable. He pulled a book out of his briefcase. Dragonsbane, written by Katherine O’Reilly. After he had learned she was writer, he had gone out and purchased one of her books. He remembered his surprise when she told him what kind of novels she wrote. And when she had referred to it as the kind of thing wasn’t actually real, it had felt like a small knife had stabbed through his heart. The first thing that had realized that night was that she was not Kagome, at least not the Kagome he had been looking for. And yet, Katherine, he would not call her Kat, had captured his interest much faster than Kagome had.

He did not normally enjoy these so-called fantasy writers, having experienced much of what they called fantasy to be reality. But Katherine’s book had immediately drawn in him in. He was barely able to put it down. Well he thought before settling into the next chapter, if she decides she doesn’t want anything to do with me, at least I’ve managed to find a distraction.

That thought made something inside of him ache. He had felt such a spark between them that night and he had been convinced that she had felt it as well. He had expected it to be like talking with Kagome, but it had been so much better. Where Kagome had been guarded and short with her phrases, Katherine was open and eager to talk. And for the first time, he had been able to talk as well. It felt so different to have a conversation, instof mof merely demanding answers to questions. He had never actually talked to Kagome. He had expected her to answer him. After all he had been the Lord of the Western Lands. Of course a human should answer his questions if he deemed it so. But now, he wished he could have been different. Maybe that’s why I enjoyed it so much. She’s different, but now so am I. Well if he wasn’t different after centuries of living, there would be definitely something wrong with him. He leaned back with a sigh. A few more days, I’ll give it a few more days, he told himself. I may have been waiting centuries for this, but she only met me a week ago. He settled into a more comfortable position and gave himself up the book.

Kat climbed out of her car and walked over to Stacy’s apartment. She sorted through her purse trying to find her keys. And then she sorted through the keys trying to find the key to Stacy’s place. It was convenient that the whole had keys to each other’s houses, but it sometimes got stupidly confusing. After the third key she tried, she got the door open and walked up the stairs to the second floor.

She opened the door and looked around in horror. Stacy’s apartment always looked like a hurricane had hit it, but with the addition of all the clothes she had bought in Japan it looked worse then usual. Kat made a mental note to get the group over to help her clean up sometime soon.

“Stacy, where are you and this better be good. I was almost finished with my third chapter.” Stacy ran out from the kitchen, the cheerful grin on her face fading as she saw Kat.

“You look like shit,” she told her. Kat turned bright red as she looked down at her clothes. She was wearing a white tank top with no bra and black sweat pants. She hadn’t brushed her hair that morning after her shower and it showed.

“I was working, what do you expect, for me to look like a Calvin Klein model?”

“Well you could be a model if you really wanted to, you’re gorgeous enough, but I was expecting you to be dressed a little bit better.” Kat stared at Stacy, who was wearing a ripped T-shirt and shorts.

“Have you utterly lost your mind? I mean do you even realize what you’re wearing?” Kat asked her.

“Well yeah, but this isn’t about me. Besides I’m on summer vacation. I don’t have go teach the little monsters for a few more weeks. Come over here!” Stacy grabbed Kat’s arm and dragged her out to the balcony. She grabbed a pair of binoculars and handed them to Kat.

“Ok. Now look in the park, under that big tree towards the left.” Kat gaped at Stacy.

“Are you telling me that you called me up, interrupted my writing, and told me I had to come over for an emergency just to ogle some poor random guy that you decided to spy on?” She glared at her furiously.

“Stacy, you have never been the most logical person in the world, but this is utterly ridiculous!”

“Oh before you start yelling, just look, ok?” Kat took the binoculars and focused them in the area she was pointing.

“Fine, but after I look I’m going….” She trailed off as she saw the object of Stacy’s spying. Sitting under the tree was Sesshoumaru, reading a book. Right across the street. Stacy smiled triumphantly.

“Wanna take back what you said now or do just wanna kiss my ass for me later?” she asked. Kat blushed and handed the binoculars back to her friend.

“You haven’t called him yet, right?” asked Stacy. Kat nodded. “Well then this is a sign. Stop being such a pussy and go talk to him.”

“It wasn’t because I was scared to call him. It was because…” she trailed off.

“It was because you were afraid he might be like the others isn’t it?” Kat nodded. When they had arrived back home, they had all sat down and had a long talk about Kat and her penchant for abusive men. She had finally admitted that they were right. Every guy she had ever been with had been verbally abusive or worse.

“Well I’m telling you to go for it. You said it yourself that night; he doesn’t act like other guys. And besides, I can see that look in your eyes. If you don’t go for this, you’re gonna regret it for a long time.” Kat grinned. Why not go for it. She couldn’t be unlucky with men for the rest of her life, could she?

“Do you have any clean clothes hiding in this disaster area?” she asked.

“Yeah what do you want?”

“A sports bra.”

“A sports bra? What you’re just going to throw a bra on and go see him looking like that?”

“Sure why not? When I met him, I knocked him flat on his ass and he was still interested enough to ask me to dance that night. I’ll just make like I was hanging with you and decided to go for a jog. Besides you know me. I don’t dress to impress. If people don’t like it, then the hell with them.” Stacy grumbled as she picked her way through the piles of clothes and finally pulled out a white sports bra. Kat quickly pulled the bra on and grabbed a hairbrush. She brushed out the tangles and braided it back.

“How do I look?” she asked.

“Like a scrub.” Kat laughed and gave her hug.

“I’ll be back later. I’m gonna leave my car out front.”

“What are you planning?”

“I’ll tell you when I come back later.” Kat winked at Stacy before blowing her a kiss and walking out the door.
