Part Twelve
Ten minutes passed before Kikyou made a decision.
There was no way she could sit here like this without doing something. The love of her life and the father of her child, her new friend and her future brother-in-law were all in danger. Not to mention the other men that went with them.
No. She had been quiet when she should have spoken sooner. Now Kagome and everyone were in danger. It was time to act and discard her passivity. But she must err on the side of caution. She could not bring harm to her baby or herself, which would destroy Inuyasha.
Kikyou fished around in her purse until she located Inuyasha’s cell phone. She scrolled through the numbers until she located Sango’s.
The phone rang less than three times when it was hastily answered.
“Hello?”
Kikyou’s heart pounded because Sango sounded so worried and frantic.
“Sango? This is Kikyou; Inuyasha’s fiancée.”
“Kikyou?” Sango was confused. She and Miroku were at the police station waiting for news. He glanced over at her with a questioning expression, noting her distress.
“Yes. I’m calling to tell you that we found Kagome.” Kikyou hastened to explain the details involving the others. “I’m concerned about them all coming out alive.”
“Don’t worry, Kikyou. Tell us where you are and we’ll be there with the police.”
Before Kikyou could reply, the car window was smashed. Glass flew everywhere and she braced herself for the worst. The phone was snatched from her and thrown to the ground and crushed. When the door was flung open, Kikyou was grabbed and forced outside.
She forced herself to calmly greet the man who was standing above her with icy menace in his eyes.
“Hello Onigumo,” she said, swallowing her fear and inciting her determination to come through this.
“Greetings Kikyou,” Naraku murmured, before nodding at someone behind her.
Before she could move away, a bag was placed over her head and she was tied up. Kikyou could hear Naraku’s order.
“Bring her.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Dean had led them all into a boarded up area that was used as a garbage dump. The smell was overwhelming in the humid air that was already suffused with the aroma of mold, dank water and rotting fish.
The old drunk pried away one of the boards that covered a window. He used one of his tools to open the grate covering it and tested the ledge.
“It’s good. We can go through here to get to the lower level,” he informed them.
“Inuyasha, you go first,” Sesshoumaru ordered.
“W-what the fuck?” Inuyasha exclaimed angrily. He pointed at Kouga. “Why can’t that useless motherfucker go? He’s expendable!”
Sesshoumaru did not reply. He merely stood there all too aware that there was no point.
“Useless? What the fuck did you bring besides your big head and big mouth! Kiss my ass, Dog shit!” Kouga snapped walking up to Inuyasha with his fists balled up.
“Make me, Weasel nuts!”
“Are either one of you aware that Kikyou is outside alone? That Kagome becomes a liability if Naraku finds out that she is no use to him?”
Inuyasha and Kouga managed to look ashamed. They sent one another a final glare with a promise to do damage later. Inuyasha climbed down with Tetsusaiga in his hand and quickly checked the area.
“Let’s go! The smell down here might kill us first!”
Dean ushered through corridors with chipped walls, cracked floors covered in dirt, mud, empty bottles and filth that had been long abandoned until the stench of unwashed bodies, urine, sewer fumes and mildew assailed them. The group soon learned what part of the cause was.
Groups of derelicts and homeless men, women and youth crowded the area. Some where sleeping, others were milling about; a few were smoking, drinking and talking. There was a great deal of ragged belongings and junk everywhere, tons of refuse and empty containers and even makeshift beds.
Dean greeted a few who wandered up to them, and there were others begging for money or food. Inuyasha “conveniently” dropped change as they passed through the area and Sesshoumaru gave him a knowing smirk. Ginta and Moutan paused to talk with a group of dirty and ragged youths. They exchanged a few words and after a moment or two waltzed up to Kouga.
“Here,” Moutan said, holding up a razor blade and a handgun. “You ain’t ready for this.”
“Whatever,” Kouga muttered taking the weapons. The two men nodded aware that it was his way of saying thanks. He’d known them since the early days when they had struggled and fought for food and shelter in their old neighborhood. Somehow he’d managed to escape while they stayed but he kept in touch with them and helped them out. Now they were guarding his back.
“This way,” Dean called out and everyone was glad to not linger there. The smell alone and the aura of hopeless despair were suffocating.
The derelict had found a panel that opened up to an area that was filled with loads of cables, wires and circuit breakers. There was a makeshift ladder on the side and another door at the top of it.
“My buddy just told me we can get into the main area of this building through the basement. Let’s go.”
Everyone climbed up to the second door leading to an open stale basement. The noises coming from just outside the door alerted them all to the fact that the place was crawling with guards.
“Are we gonna stand down, or what?” Inuyasha cracked his knuckles, and checked his weapon to make certain it was fully loaded and ready.
“No, I am with Moutan,” Sesshoumaru told him. “You and Dean are going to find Kagome. Have your hacker on stand-by to break us out of here since I know this place is on lockdown.”
Inuyasha wanted to protest but he knew Sesshoumaru was good.
“Kouga and Ginta, you will be the distraction for Inuyasha and Dean. Also, keep them covered while Moutan and I clean house.”
Sesshoumaru had given his orders. He brandished Toukijin in his hand and moved towards the door with his ear pressed against it. Then he signaled Moutan to get ready when he heard the guards approaching.
Sess twisted the knob, then slammed the door hard into a body just outside the door when he shoved it open. The man grunted and he felt satisfaction that Moutan was in the hallway and had already shot the second guard. Sesshoumaru grabbed the stunned guard lying on the floor before he could get up on his own and snapped his neck.
“Let’s go,” he ordered Moutan as they rushed through the hallway charging toward the group of guards who yelling and shooting at them.
There had to be a score of them. Some had guns, others knives, clubs, pipes, bats and a few were wearing brass knuckles.
Sesshoumaru’s blood was afire. He lived for the challenges in fighting; always keeping his cool. It was like in the old days when he fought as a mercenary. The enemy moved in slow motion to him. He was always quicker.
He leveled his gun at one man charging him and fired, splattering bits of skull and brains everywhere. The bullet kept going, striking another man in the throat. The Jackal model blasted enormous holes into anything; there was nothing left of the top of the guard’s head and the second man was decapitated because his entire neck was destroyed.
Moutan used a technique of slashing and shooting their enemies. One guard rushed at Sesshoumaru from behind, and the silver-haired man landed a roundhouse kick into his chest. He staggered back from the impact but managed to gain enough leverage to raise his gun at Sesshoumaru who had scarce opportunity to react. Moutan swerved in enough time to bury his Bowie knife in the base of the man’s neck from behind. The serrated edges sliced through his spine and artery when Moutan yanked it out. By then, the man had raised his gun and squeezed the trigger, killing a few of his own men in the process. Sess kicked him in the face where he fell back into Moutan who neatly slashed him across the throat and plugged a few into him.
He grinned up at his companion, “Bastard is fucking dead now.”
Sess offered a brisk nod and looked around the hallway. He was glad that someone had shattered the surveillance camera. The carnage in the hall would be enough to make anyone sick or enraged with bloodlust.
“Let’s go,” he called over his shoulder, ignoring Moutan’s gleeful countenance.
Unlike him, his partner seemed to delight in slaughter. Sesshoumaru, on the other hand, had always found it boring, a necessary chore. But thinking about what he was going to do to Naraku when he found him, was another matter.
If he where anyone else, he could swear his heart thudded with excitement at the thought.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Kagome was perspiring. It was hot in the vents. She’d been crawling through the airways and her knees and arms hurt. When she’d felt the current of air, it had made sense to make her way towards that. By the time she reached the end, the hot air was blasting full force. Her clothes were soaked but she had persevered.
Below her somewhere, she could hear voices. The men’s gruff voices drifted up to her.
“…all the noise… all fucking morning,” Man One complained, and a loud crash emphasized his irritation.
“Hey, hey Sal, go easy with those bags,” Man Two yelled out. “At least we ain’t out there with them trying to find who broke in.”
“I don’t give a shit! It’s just clothes and linen! This job is crap! I’d rather be out there crushing skulls,” Sal hotly informed him.
“Well, at least a couple of ex-cons like us is working now. Ain’t nobody gonna hire us for this kind of dough. Now hurry up and get that stuff to the shoot. They come to pick up everything at noon.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” Sal grumbled and Kagome could hear a cart squeaking somewhere below her.
Just then the passageway in the vents brightened up and the hot air was released. She was able to see that Sal had opened a hatch below her. He was emptying load after load of white bedclothes into the large hamper.
It was perfect.
Kagome lay down on her tummy and slid down the shoot into the basket of clothes once Sal wandered away for a moment. She quickly ducked under the thick wads of fabric, almost suffocating from the heat and dead weight. But she was safe for now.
The cart was now being pushed by Sal who was grumbling, “Damn, this shit gets heavier everyday!”
After several moments of movement and travel, the cart stopped. Kagome could sense she was in a much darker room somewhere. She could also hear traffic which meant she was close to outside.
Thus far, this was the safest option left to her. She wasn’t certain who the intruders were that had infiltrated the building, but a hope beat in her heart that it was Sesshoumaru with the police. Her only success in the entire matter had been that so far she had not encountered Naraku.
If she could make it out of the building without that happening, then all would better than she thought. And to think she was distraught over her break-up with Sesshoumaru over a week ago. Now it all appeared to be petty in comparison.
Kagome crossed her fingers, and waited.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Inuyasha was talking to Mel as he partially dragged Dean with him through the hallway. He needed the hacker to shut off the surveillance cameras and to start opening doors for them. He’d much rather be fighting than babysitting an old guy.
“Mel, I need you to send me another map of this place. Get a fix on our location, okay?”
Mel snorted on the line. “I already have you on my screen. Just keep moving towards the upper levels and you should be fine.”
“Is that where Naraku is?”
“Maybe. Or at least that’s the most heavily secured area.” Mel snickered. “Okay, all the cameras are out now. Just keep moving. These fools don’t know who they are dealing with!”
“Mel, shut up and keep working,” Inuyasha snapped, and bellowed “Fuck!” just as two armed men came racing down the hallway towards them.
He instinctively pushed Dean behind him, and fired Tetsusaiga. The gun was so superbly crafted that the balance was never off even when he did take proper aim. He was so focused and pissed off that he didn’t feel the sting of the bullet going clean through his arm.
One man staggered back as the bullet shattered his entire chest cavity, piercing his lungs and shredding his insides. The second man kept firing even though he’d taken a slug in the abdomen. He was clutching his stomach, the bright red blood was pooling and leaking through his fingers. Inuyasha shrugged and raised his gun a touch higher to deliver a round into the middle of his forehead. A splattered mess covered the floor and walls, and Inuyasha didn’t appreciate being splashed with the stuff either. Good thing he wore blao tho this party.
“Let’s go, Dean,” he called over his shoulder, aware that he’d been shot but ignoring the burning pain. He paused, spotting the old man, frowning.
“Damn,” he grunted aloud taking in the slumped form against the wall. The old guy was dead despite the fact he’d try to keep him out of the fray.
Now what? Ginta and Kouga were supposed to be covering their backs but they had disappeared.
Inuyasha could hear the sounds of more guards approaching. He quickly ducked into a side room that was, to his surprise, open. A quick glance around confirmed that it was a laundry room.
“Keh! Since when do criminals need to wash their clothes?” Personal experience told him the laundry service was “laundering” more than just clothes.
He could hear footsteps outside the door. Shit! They had seen him duck into the room. Inuyasha counted to five and waited for the stupid fucks to rush into the room.
The first bullet from Tetsusaiga lodged into the shoulder cavity of a bald, burly man with bad teeth. Blood splashed the room from the wound and he dropped his automatic. Inuyasha aimed ignoring the pain in his arm and shot him directly in the heart. Before he could step away, the second man was trying to avenge the first. He leveled off a couple of rounds at Inuyasha who ducked but was moving slow due to his injury. Neither man noticed the head that peeked out of one of the laundry hampers.
Kagome could not believe she had heard her best friend’s voice! She had to see if it was truly him. Taking a risk, she poked her head out and smothered gasp when she saw Inuyasha plug one of Naraku’s men. From the stain on his clothing, she could tell he was injured and was not able to fight the second man one on one. So she did the only thing she could do.
Spotting a fire extinguisher along the wall she grabbed it and stabilized herself enough that she could get in one meaningful swing. Hearing the noises behind them, the two men turned in time to witness Kagome shrieking like a Valkyrie as she slammed the extinguisher across the man’s head. A loud crunch was heard and the shocked, mingled with surprise look on his face had her sputtering as he folded like and accordion and staggered to the floor.
“Kagome!”
Inuyasha lifted her up out of the laundery cart and swung her around. She became dizzy and disoriented. She smacked him.
“Will you stop, bouzo?” Kagome yelped when he squeezed her tightly. “You’re bleeding on me!”
Inuyasha looked sheepish for a moment. He attempted to act manly and suppress his pain but Kagome noticed and was immediately contrite.
“Here! Sit down there you are hurt!”
He grumbled but obeyed her. The girl rambled around the room until she found some bandages. Kagome ripped up sheets to bind the wound tightly after cleaning it with a bottle of *Old No. 7 she discovered in a crate.
“Is Sesshoumaru here, too?”
Inuyasha gave her a look.“Oh.“Oh.” She should have known that he would be there if Inuyasha was. Which meant he was in danger.
“C’mon, I gotta get you out of here to safety,” Inuyasha said interrupting her thoughts.
“No way! I’m not leaving here without Sesshoumaru!”
“Shhh, you baka! Will you fucking keep it down already? We don’t need anymore goons trying to kill us in here.”
Kagome looked in alarm at the two men lying crumpled on the floor and bleeding profusely.
“Should we tie them up?”
“Keh. Hell no,” Inuyasha told her with a snort, grabbing her by the hand. “We need to go.”
“Why not?”
“Why not what, bitch?”
Kagome gritted her teeth and counted to five. “Why not tie them up? They might wake up.”
“They won’t.” He was pressing his ear to the door.
“You don’t know that,” she snapped. Sometimes he could be an asshole. “And don’t call me a bitch. You bastard.”
“Are you stupid or what?” Inuyasha asked her and cursed when she punched him. “Okay, okay, okay they’re dead.”
“Huh?”
He got in her face and said it slowly. “They are dead. I shot one and you killed the second guy. Didn’t you hear his skull crack and his neck break?”
“Oh Kami,” Kagome muttered under her breath. She killed someone?
She groaned. The sooner they found Sesshoumaru the better.
