Chapter Eleven: The Terror of the Ancient Noh Mask of the future


Breathing out softly I let out all the air in my lungs a small smile on my lips as I reclined against the trunk on a large branch of a tree that was situated on the outskirts of the clearing that held the well to which allowed Inuyasha, Kagome and I to pass through to her own time 500 years in the future.


A time I was originally from though not from this world I suspected. My eyes were shut leaving my sight in darkness my body seemingly relaxed though my ears twitched towards each noise made showing I was more wary than I looked though the sunlight was putting me more and more at ease as time went by


–‘Snort’ You fell asleep, admit it- mentally I furrowed my brow at the voice ‘Hn rather not thanks’ a growl was heard


–ay don growl at me!- shaking my head in amusement I opened my eyes, sat up from my position on the branch and looked into the clearing after hearing something moving in the bushes.


Looking closely I noticed it was Kagome on her bike apparently looking for Inuyasha who I knew was not too far from the well to keep an eye out for the girl. Twitching my ears picked up her mumbling under her breath as she looked around catching sight of me in the tree but dismissing me as she searched out the area for the male Hanyou who would try to stop her going back.


Not finding any sign she sped out trying to get through the well before any interference appeared when Inuyasha moved with his demon speed and stopped her in her tracks.


Ignoring the two of them as Kagome tried to get past Inuyasha I swung my legs over the side of the branch a tiny bit annoyed that my peace and quiet had been disturbed and pushed myself off the branch and landed shakily on the uneven ground. Staggering a little to get my balance but I did not topple over.


Finally making sure I were not going to topple over onto my ass or face I rubbed the back of my neck as I began to idly walk over to the two of them, looking up to see what was happening and could see Inuyasha talking down at Kagome his expression one of dislike with Kagome going home to her era with the Sacred Jewel Shards in hand.


Shaking my head at the way the two argued I looked away again, stopping in my tracks as I stared out into the tree’s surrounding the clearing.


–Somethin been botherin you? Since this morn you’ve been moody girl- My ears twitched in annoyance, all I wanted was to be left alone; for ever since yesterday my instincts had began to go out of control telling me to hide away from the world until the next few days had passed.


‘My instincts have been driving me crazy and I don’t know why’ Growling came from my Youkai half as I felt her move restlessly


/Weak, become weak\ I furrowed my brow in thought at this


–ay don worry about it too much girl just keep going day by day- shaking my head slightly to show I heard I turned my attention back to Inuyasha and Kagome to see him holding a bolder over the well.


“Hey! Now what are you doing!?” Kagome sounded disbelieving as though she could not believe what she was seeing, blinking I started a slow walk over towards them both on hand slightly raised in a half stopping gesture.


“Uh, Inuyasha I do not think that is the best…” I shut up when under Kagome’s hearing range he growled at me not to interfere with what he was doing, scowling I snarled silently back at him and crossed my arms waiting for him to make the mistake I knew Kagome would sit him for.


“Uh! What does it look like?! I’m going to cover up the well for good and then you won’t be able to escape to that strange era of yours…!” Then with a heave of his arms he got ready to chuck it on the well.


“Good riddance!” I saw Kagome tense and one of my eyes closed as her hands tightened on the handles of her bike.


“SIT!” That first one made Inuyasha tip slightly but Kagome was so furious that she did not stop there.


“Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit! SIT!” and with a cry of agony the bolder plus himself crashed into the ground. By this time my ears were flat against my head, even I did not expect her to go that far


–I don want to get on her bad side- my Youkai side snorted agreeing with my Human side not liking the product of her temper if it was ever aimed at themselves at having been a product of it once before.


Moving forward again I stopped by Inuyasha’s side as he whimpered at the weight crushing his back bone into the ground.


“Stay boy! I’ll be back in three days so don’t even think of following me! Both of you!” I looked down at him on the ground and winced in sympathy and looked up as Kagome jumped over the side of the well to her own time, sighing in irritation as my ears lay back I placed two hands on the bolder, which a huff of breath and a tense of my muscles I pushed it slowly off Inuyasha.


Then sliding an arm under one of his I lifted him slowly, tucking his arm around my neck I helped him move towards Kaede’s home with him grumbling about Kagome and females in general. Smirking I jerked him making him gasp in pain and grumble more threats towards me this time.


An Hour later…


I jumped from one branch to the other, my feet barely gripping in time to push me towards the next one. The wind blew my hair back out of my face giving me a clear view of the place I was aiming for, finally jumping one more time I stopped on a thick branch and let myself relax.


“Boy am I glad to be away from that Meany!” Chuckling under my breath I looked round to watch Shippo carefully slip off my back onto the branch and more or less bounce onto a slightly higher one so he would be eye level once I had settled against the trunk of the tree.


“I mean…! He whines way more than me an I’m a kid!” A smile had found its way on my face as I watched the way he moved his arms around in his frustration at Inuyasha, sitting down I leaned back against the truck with one leg hanging down towards the ground not at all bothered by the distance towards the ground.


“Hey Shippo…” He turned to me a curious look on his face as his bright green eyes sparkled with Kitsune amusement and calculation.


“Yeh?” I tilted my head my ears twitching with my own curiosity as I watched the young one bring out one of his many toys and play with it while he waited for me to elaborate with my words.


“Can you tell me more about the Kitsune Heredity?” his pointed ears twitched as he turned his head to look at me a thoughtful look on his face as he sat down his fluffy tail twitching with each thought going through his mind.


“Well I can’t tell you much but I can try…” He looked excited with being able to tell someone about himself and his kind, smiling softly my ears drooped in relaxation as I folded my arms behind my head.


“So what are you interested in? Maybe colour fur of each type? Or maybe the maturity of each different type of Kitsune like…!” Laughing softly I held a hand up calming his tirade down as he bounced in place.


“Shippo start with the maturity of a Kitsune and carry on from there.” He sat down his paws tucked underneath him and he placed a hand on his face with a thoughtful look as he thought over what to tell me.


“Well maturity for each type is different in all, I mean some do not change entire lives which some can turn quite early and others in the middle!” I blinked mentally sorting through his explanation with a hand up to stop his words for a second


“So every kitsune is different, some go through maturity some do not and it can be a different periods of their lives?” My head was cocked to the side again my ears perked forward in interest as I watched the kit nod his head his arms crossed a smile on his face


“Hai! As well as the power levels and blood strength it all goes to inheritance.”


“So do you see yourself going through one?” The kit blinked at me as he tilted his head as a hand rubbed the back of his head a surprised look on his face


“I… never thought about it… being a kid means you don think about things like adults do.”


“But?” I blinked my ears doing a funny movement that made one go floppy at the tip while the other just seemed to wilt as I shifted position curiosity running throughout my form


“With my clan most of them could go between their real form and their hu… hum…” My brow furrowed as I thought of the word he was looking for, the kit looked frustrated at his lapses in conversation from words he still had trouble with


“Humanised?”


“Hai! That form so I will gain more likely the same.”


“So you will loose the paws on your feet and may sprout real fox ears?” The kit nodded his tail moving back and forth in a lazy way showing how relaxed he was as he waited for my next question will enthusiasm with the large grin on his face, it seemed he was enjoying the talk


“What about abilities?” His head tilted again as he thought this over


“Well I have my Kitsune Bi, Kitsune Magic, Bunshin, Naki Kinoko and Shapeshifting. That’s all I can do but as I get older I can do more” Then he twitched his tail moving restlessly against him


“Why you ask?” I let out a deep breath licking my lips as I thought over the answer and decided to just ask it


“Can you teach me Illusion type magic?” The kit looked taken back by the question and pulling out the spinning top from his top he hopped down and placed it in front of me and jumped back up to his position as before except he was standing this time.


“I can try but don’t be surprised if it does not work!” He looked excited about trying this


“It will take about…” He looked up at the sky working out the suns position as I looked down at the spinning top with a thoughtful gaze and then looked back up at the kit


“…Quarter of a suns rotation!” He turned back to look at me again as I gave him a small smile as he danced from foot to foot


“You sure this is what you want to do?” I blinked at his question and focused on his face, he did not look particularly bothered by whatever the answer was going to be


“Hai. I want to be able to blend in with the humans in Kagome’s time so I can go visit sometimes.” The kit just blinked at my answer and nodded settling himself back in his position


“Ok we shall have to see. Let’s start…” The kit was grinning broadly from his branch looking excited as I watched him a bit warily after all he was a kitsune


Several hours later


“Hey you did it!” Opening my eyes at Shippo’s joyful cry I looked down at the spinning top which I was meant to change to another colour. My mouth was slightly open slow panting coming from me as sweat slipped down from my forehead to my neck


The top was certainly a different colour but it was wavering every now and again with the original colouring but inside I felt it was quite an accomplishment. Tilting my head to the side my ears drooping with exhaustion I considered the top as I poked it, the image seemed to fizzle before settling again not as good as before.


“Wow, even I could not do it that well on my first attempt!” I turned my head and looked at the kitsune as he sat there a thoughtful look on his face.


“Though it may have been because your older than me.” Sighing I closed my eyes and let go of the power that was like streams in my mind and felt them settle back ready to be used again now they had been uncovered.


“Well the elder of my clan all ways said that someone who began late with Illusions and could do them would be a quick learner like a… a…uhh?” Tilting my head at the kit I thought over his words


“Like an instinct of knowledge that only needs to be used?”


“Hai!” With a laugh the kitsune jumped off his perch and I caught him in my arms as I settled against the truck of the tree my arms instinctly curling around the small body and while he borrowed burrowed into my cloth like Kosode.


“Maybe you are a kitsune and not Inu? For no other creature outside kisune’s have mastered Illusions.” Looking down at the kit who had his ear resting over where my heart beat considered his words


“Maybe a hybrid of a kitsune and an Inu?” I felt him shake his head his little fist curling into the red Hakama


“No, Inu’s and Kitsune generally don’t get on the only one that never hunted us was the Inu-no-Tashiou and only because in my clans ru… rum…”


“Rumors?”


“Hai. Because of those it was said that he taken in a kitsune kit that parents had been killed. It was also said that the kit was raised by the Inu-no-Tashiou and Lord Raizen.” I tilted my head curiously at this information more and more building up in my mind, not enough to create a complete puzzle yet


“I can’t say much on it Shippo, but I will keep it in mind for I am curious enough to dig down about this.” I felt the little one shift in my lap, lifting him with my arms as he gripped my Hakama tightly and crossed my legs settling him in the centre so he was much more comfortable


“I hope you are a kitsune like me then I will have someone the same!” I looked down into his eyes as he watched my with his green eyes that were sparkling with many emotions mostly hope, my brow furrowed and with a tightening of the lips I followed my instinct and licked his cheek in comfort not wanting him sad or upset.


“We will know after the maturity you told me about for it will be in the next couple of years.” I felt him nod as he placed his head on my chest again his ear on my heart once more listening to the very quick beat (demon hearts beat I think 5x faster than a humans for the power they contain in their bodies as well as the speeds they can go, also a reason for why Inuyasha eats a lot and never puts on weight)


Shippo had begun shaking and wanting to comfort him some more I began making a purring sound deep in my chest by instinct again my ears trained fully on the little one in my lap. My nose then twitched with the smell of salt and sadness and I felt wetness beginning to soak the material where his head was angled over my heart.


Looking up to the distant sky I blinked furiously not wanting to cry as well, I had not thought about my own family in a long time but being with the young one had made me realise we were in the same boat. Both had lost our families from very different circumstances but the end result was the same.


His clan/pack/family had been torn from him by the Thunder Brothers for the Jewel shards leaving him an orphan and my family had been lost through time and space that the spirit had torn me from my own home. I had held on for as long as I could to the hope that it was not true but somewhere inside I knew I was not ever going to go home and see them again.


Clenching my eyes shut as silent tears ran down my face I lay my head on top of Shippo’s my arms holding him tightly against me and together we mourned or family’s that we would never see again.


Sometime late evening…


My eyes drew open to about halfway a yawn escaping my mouth as my ears lay back. Detangling a hand from where I had clasped them together I lifted it up and used my knuckles to get rid of the sleep in my eyes.


A quiet yip in my lap drew my attention and angling my sleepy eyes down and surveyed the kit who was sleep in my lap curled up his hands tight in my Hakama. Tilting my head I stroked a hand lightly down his hair and he murmured while nuzzling further into the warmth my legs were producing as well as his own body.


Smiling slightly I shifted my hold on him and was somehow able to pick him up, get up and jump down off the tree all without waking him up. Using my Kosode I wrapped him up in it keeping him warm while I walked back to Kaede’s in my tee-shirt, one of the few things I had packed in my backpack that had come with me to this place.


Coming out of the forest I moved to Kaede’s hut and moved the flap careful not to jar the kitsune as well as ignoring Inuyasha who growled at me and moved to the other room to place him beside my pack. Searching inside I pulled out a blanket that was in plastic and pulled it out, covering the kit to keep him comfortable.


Signing I stood up again and moved out of the room, coming back into the main area where the fire pit was, I turned my head to look at Inuyasha a finger on my lips as I tilted my head towards the door.


His ears lay slightly back as he slowly pushed himself up his teeth gritted and I moved over to help even as he gave me a dirty look his pride damaged by my concern. Helping him out of the door and out of Kaede’s watchful eyes I let him go as soon as the covering covered it over again.


Inuyasha as I watched him carefully stretched out his back growling quite audibly that the pain would not go away as he began to walk towards the well. I followed waiting for him to begin the conversation.


“Where the hell did you go?” He was holding back his temper for the moment, I looked out into the forest as it got darker not effecting our senses at all


“I went out into the forest to keep the kit out of trouble and he taught me a few things.” I crossed my arms over my chest my nose scenting out each individual scent and knowing which were threats and which were not.


“God damn it! Why did you not stop her from going back to her strange time?!” My ears lay down at his tone a growl working its way through my throat causing him to snarl at me as my eyes narrowed at him as I stopped to glare


He also stopped watching me with narrowed eyes every being of him showing he was the alpha and he would not be challenged by a female. My ears lay flat and with my lips lifted off my teeth turned my head away lowering it, submitting to him for that time but he knew I would not take his attitude.


I do not know what would have happened yet if we had not both felt the waves of terrified emotion coming from the well. Looking at each other for a second we both agreed to put this behind us for the moment and raced for the well jumping down it.


The blue light surrounded us sending us to Kagome’s time, landing on the other side of the well with the kid brother of Kagome watching us both with wide eyes


“It you… your Inuyasha.” I stifled a smile; it seemed Inuyasha had gotten a reputation for Kagome to her little brother.


“In the flesh kid. Now what’s this problem you need help with?” Then the kid seemed to shake himself out of his stupor and turn pleading eyes up to both of us


“Please! You must help my sister the Noh Mask is after her!” Leaping out of the well Inuyasha swung the kid onto his back as I followed him out the door of the well house and into the city.


Almost instantly the smell of Kagome’s blood came to me and I glance at Inuyasha to see he had a frown as he noticed the same thing. Leaping down the steps we both jumped to the top of the buildings, I kept my eye on Inuyasha making sure not to look too many times to how high we were up.


I may have been a demon but it was a long way up and I still was not settled with my abilities at all. My ears were mostly back with my fright at being so high but I wanted to help Kagome so this was the quickest way


“Hang on tight kid. It’s a long way down.” I turned my attention to what Inuyasha had just said as we began to descend once more towards a telegraph pole, gripping hold of Inuyasha’s kariginu I made sure I would not loose him by accident


“Guess I was not strong enough to pass through the hidden well…” He sounded so upset about it but I kept silent not really wanting Inuyasha’s concentration to split anymore than it had to.


Landing on the telegraph pole I felt him tense as my feet caught some purchase and I let go ready to follow


“Lucky for you” I tilted my head in Inuyasha’s direction as we both pushed off and landed on a low roof and raced across it


“Because in my world. Plenty of monsters would just love to have you for lunch.” The kid gave off a nervous gasp of breath as we leaped off the low roof and landed on a truck


I shook my head my ears twisting around again though still slightly back with the wind as I looked around the scent of blood getting stronger all the time


It was as I looked passed a car window that I backtracked and looked again. It was only a minute but as I car pulled away I swore I saw someone with red hair and green eyes looking straight at me, then it was gone and the car had pulled away


Then turning back to Inuyasha we both leaped off the truck and raced off towards a construction site that was building, what looked like some apartments from the skeleton type.


“Inuyasha I think that’s where she’s gone!” He turned his head to me as I pointed towards the construction and nodded his head both off us speeding up hoping we were both not too late to help her.


Jumping over the fence we both took a moment to look around and spotting the steps going up the building raced up them to help Kagome who was more than likely on the top floor.


We just got to the second to top floor when we heard the voice of the Noh mask. Gritting my teeth I pushed to be faster racing a little ahead of Inuyasha. Finally we got to the top floor and I slowed down for Inuyasha to get in front.


With a slice of his favored attack, it split the creature in two letting us through and finally get to Kagome.


“Nice timing.” She sounded so relieved to see us I just nodded to her question most of my attention on the Noh Mask that was slowly pulling itself together.


“Are you all right?” I heard Souta get off of Inuyasha’s back and I moved over to him, both of us for the moment with our attention now on the two siblings


“Yeh…” I glanced at Inuyasha nudging him to get his attention with my shoulder but he ignored me


‘Probably holding a grudge’ I heard a laugh from my human side as my Youkai side tensed up for the fight ahead


“…Oh sis!” I felt Inuyasha flinch very slightly and looking at him saw a small grimace cross his face. Not that I blamed him, salt and sadness left a real bitter smell not something you would want to have to scent

“Hey? What’s with all the tears? I thought you said you weren’t afraid.” Inuyasha sound a slight bit disgruntled, but catching his eye I shook my head to let it go. He frowned and snorting he turned his face away


“It’s ok. Inuyasha’s going to destroy that monster for us and it will all be ok.” I smiled at the cute picture the two of them made, heh if I ever wanted a sister I would be like her, that is probably why she became so close to me as a pack sister for my Youkai side.


My ears twitched at hearing Inuyasha clear his throat and curious I tilted my head to listen


“Before we get on with my little rescue mission here! This might be an appropriate time for an apology wouldn’t you say?” I brought a hand up groaning as I smacked my forehead, I knew he was still holding a grudge


“Uhh Apology for what?” She sounded so bewildered at the question that he had asked that I lifted my hand a little to look


“For what?! For shouting all those incantations that’s what!” I snorted earning a glare from him that made me grin weakly with a hand behind my head rubbing my neck in nervousness


“Oh that! Yeh now its coming back. Ok I’m very sorry. There… you satisfied?” I had to hold in my giggled as Inuyasha turned around muttering as Kagome was waving a hand in front of her with a smile on her face


And then the two of them began to argue moving around them both I stopped by Souta feeling he was the safest of all


“Oh no the mask!” I switched my attention on the mask in a snap my Youkai side fully focused on the fight that was going to happen, while my human side focused on the Shikon Jewel fragment in its forehead


“Who dares attack me?” The mask’s voice made me cringe, I did not like the voice it produced and I shook my head to get rid of the ache in the ears ignoring the mask explaining about its history


“I don’t know how many humans you’ve eaten so far…” I tensed my muscles wanting to be ready to attack after Inuyasha had


“…But its time to loose some weight!” and then he tried to punch the mask. Of course it grabbed his arm instead of being broken

“What the…” Inuyasha sounded quite shocked adequately telling what we all felt, my eyes were wide with him having been trapped and I rushed foreword in instinct wanting my pack brother out of danger


“You have fell into my trap. Now you shall never escape me!” With that Inuyasha was then pulled into the mass that made up the Mask’s body. It was in that instinct that I grabbed his other arm to pull him out, but with no balance from just grabbing him I got pulled in as well


“You idiot! What were you thinking?!” I growled not impressed by his attitude as I tried to figure out a way to move


“Well excuse me! Do not put this on my shoulders Inuyasha!” He growled at me but I was not listening to him anymore at the shout from Kagome I turned my attention towards those two and saw the mask going after Souta, feeling Inuyasha tense behind me I know he had noticed


Then I felt the magic of the sword and pushing myself out the way Inuyasha ripped us out and tore after Souta to deal with the mask. I went over to Kagome and helped her up.


“You destroyed the mask!” Hearing the lads happy voice we both looked over at them and I walked over to the two of them as Kagome jogged


“You did it!” I was smiling feeling relaxed once again though my Youkai side was growling irritably inside my mind wanting to have a fight with anything but I pushed her back not wanting to be bothered with it at the moment


“Inuyasha!” I walked past where Kagome had stopped and made my way to the edge of the building construction


I stopped at the edge just enjoying the slight breeze as the morning light made everything in the city shine giving it a beautiful glow


“Wait a minute… Morning light! Oh no its morning already and I haven’t studies for my test!” Hearing her panicky voice I turned around a curious look on my face


“Hey! Where you going?” I watched as she stopped at the ramp and looked to us again


“Thanks you two! It’s been a slice. See ya when I see ya!” I had by this time moved beside Inuyasha and we both turned our heads at the same time and looked perplexed at each other with Kagome’s sudden mood change


“Oh Souta, don’t forget to pick up those Jewel Shards and bring them home with you! Both of you better be gone by the time I get out of School!” I kneeled down hearing her voice fade as she ran down the ramps my ears twitching with my hidden amusement


“Know what? I got a new hero; Betya can’t guess who it is.” Giggles started sounding from my throat but hearing Inuyasha’s downhearted reply to that sentence from Souta I just burst out laughing and poor Inuyasha just sighed and sat on the ground his ears against his head as he listened to me.


What none of us had noticed was a figure behind one of the construction bars watching us, how was I to know how much this unknown person would affect out future.
