Chapter 12: And There Were Just Three…

Jaken was left with the rest of the pack. He had expected his lord to take him to attend to any business or to at least assist the lady. His shocked state was apparent to the rest of the group. Miroku was trying his best to dissipate his sense of abandonment by giving him projects and asking what his Lord Sesshomaru would think of different aspects as they began to get the frame for the fortress laid as well as the nice huts that were being built near by it.

After Jaken had stopped sulking, he took to his new duties like a duck to water. He was proud to be a service to his lord and lady and his new lord. He was also relieved that he was not put into guardianship of the pups. That was split up between different wolves, Sango since she was pupped and was supposed to be taking it easy and others who were breaking for a while.

Rin and Shippo were entertaining themselves by playing in the fields, ‘watching’ Sango and making plans for their new home.

They were in the process of watching the fish in the stream and kicking their feet gently in and out of the water. They were also trying to keep from laughing at Sango as she paced back and forth and found little things to keep herself busy with. It was obvious that she was itching for a battle, a challenge, something---anything that would take her mind off of this ‘rest and relaxation’ she was supposed to be getting.

Shippo looked at Rin and began to wriggle his eyebrows before leaning over to whisper in her ear, “I bet that if we went and hid from Sango, she would calm down and start looking for us. It would also be interesting to see how long it would take her to come looking for us.”

Rin clamped to a hand over her mouth to keep the giggles that were threatening to break through at bay. She nodded her head and got up slowly. Shippo would give her a small head start so that they could sneak away. She had just reached the tree when he came running up behind her and clamped a hand over her mouth so she wouldn’t accidentally make any noise, giving away their plans.

Shippo helped her get up into the tree, where they found a leafy branch that would sufficiently hide them. Their hiding spot had a clear view of Sango as she was pacing. In nearly no time at all, she froze and looked where they had been sitting by the stream.

“OH NO!!!! WHERE ARE THEY?!?!!! RIN!!! SHIPPO!!! GET OVER HERE!!! NOW, PLEASE!!!!” Sango began to head up and down the river, looking at the bank. She headed over to the tree line and called.

Both Shippo and Rin had their hands cupped over the other’s mouth, trying to keep any sounds from escaping.

After a few minutes of the fruitless search, Sango began to cry and holler for Miroku to come quick. Shippo heard her and grabbed Rin. He hopped down from the tree and walked over to the distraught woman and tugged at the bottom of her kimono.

Sango looked down at the kit and little girl with watery eyes. Before she could successfully get the question out, her husband came running over.

“What is it? What’s wrong?” He grabbed his wife to him and held her as she was trying to talk but couldn’t get a coherent word out. He looked down at Shippo and Rin. Those two seemed ok, a little wide-eyed but that was it. What could have upset her so bad? He sent a puzzled look at the kit.

Shippo knew that he might as well fess up.

“Rin and I decided to hide on Sango. She was real upset and bored. We figured a good hunt like we used to have for the shards may help relieve some of that tension,” Shippo said. He may be admitting to upsetting her but wasn’t stupid.

Miroku sighed heavily and rubbed his wife’s back. He didn’t know how to really help her out with this. She had cried at a drop of a hat lately; he was used to her being angry-not upset. He made a quick decision.

“Kohaku! Come over here. I am about to give you a different duty!”

The nearly man walks up and looks at Miroku holding a sobbing Sango who had apparently given up on speech for now.

“I want you to keep an eye on these two. They are being very good about entertaining themselves right now. If they give you any problems, find some work for them to do.”

Kohaku just nodded after being given the directions. He then just turned to Shippo and Rin before asking, “Have you two ever been fishing?”

Shippo and Rin looked at each other before running over to the edge of the stream and finding just the place to sit. Kohaku went and grabbed some net and sharp sticks. He then rolled up the bottom of his pants and showed Shippo how to do his. He told Rin to part her legs slightly and pulled the back of her kimono through and to the front, hooking it in her belt.

Miroku in the meantime was hunting for something that he felt comfortable for his pregnant wife to do. He finally found just the perfect thing.

~*~ With Koga, Sesshomaru and Kagome ~*~

Kagome looked up into Koga’s face. They had been making quite a bit of head way deeper into Sesshomaru’s territory. Koga had picked her up and was carrying much like how he used to, like a bride.

Both of her mates had decided to move deeper into the territory before nightfall.

Koga looked down at his little bundle and smiled; his smile increased when Kagome returned it. He broke the exchange as I watched where he was going, following Sesshomaru’s demon cloud.

He looked at all the colors in the sky as the sun was getting close to setting. They would be stopping soon and he fully intended to enjoy his little mate.

Koga sped up a little when he saw Sesshomaru begin to descend. He found the dog demon lord standing next to a secluded hot spring, waiting impatiently.

“Nice you could make it, wolf,” he said haughtily.

Koga merely rolled his eyes before deciding to taunt the impatient demon, “Maybe I wanted to savor our mate for a moment.”

Sesshomaru started to growl.

Kagome gave Koga a deadly glare and directed another one towards Sesshomaru, whose eyes were beginning to turn red. She got down from Koga and moved toward Sesshomaru. As she reached him, she slid a hand up his front and to his neck, minding his armor. As her arm wound around his neck, she rested her head against his chest and purring out her question.

“What is wrong?”

At first, he didn’t have an answer until he noticed her scent. She was in heat. He wanted to mate and mate her now.

Rather than give her a verbal answer, he growled and leaned down and kissed her. His tongue slipped in as he signaled Koga to come closer. Koga approached and took in a deep whiff of her scent. It had changed over the course of today. She was in heat. Her scent was stronger than her last cycle, possibly due to her changing.

Koga glared at Sesshomaru. Her body was changing. Was right now the best time to pup her? The red-eyed dog demon didn’t so much as spare him a glance while he was responding to the purr and the kiss that Kagome had given earlier.

Koga placed his lips to her shoulder and kissed at the skin there. He trailed his tongue from the area he had just kissed up to her neck and took in a deep breath as he savored her sweet scent.

When Koga looked at Sesshomaru’s face, it became clear that he was not thinking about anything but being inside of their little miko turning demon.

He decided to make the dog back off. They had plenty of opportunity to pup her when she went into heat again. The pup had to be taken care of safely and Kagome had to be well during the pregnancy. Who knew what her miko powers would do right now if they acted up and started fighting the transformation. A miko had never before mated a demon. Who knew what could happen.

Koga growled at Sesshomaru, not allowing his beast out of its cage, and pushed the tall demon away from their mate.

Sesshomaru did not like that wolf pushing him around. He was the ALPHA not him. Maybe it was high time to finish their little fight about that. He would have to be sure not to hurt him too bad. It wouldn’t be good if the other mate were unable to perform.

He swiped at the wolf with his claws but missed. Koga had seen him getting ready to make his first attack. Shocked that he would try to finish this fight with Kagome standing between them, he ducked and grabbed the girl’s leg.

She shrieked as she felt herself going down. Everything was happening so fast that she had no clue what was going on.

One minute she was being kissed and caressed, the next she was landing on her ass.

Sesshomaru had a chilling smile on his face as he leaped to just the other side of Kagome to keep sending attacks at Koga. Koga made sure to move away from Kagome so that she didn’t get accidentally hurt. He was sure that Sesshomaru would not touch her since she had not done anything to challenge the dog’s authority or even his.

Kagome stayed still in her shock for only a few brief moments.

Once the surprise and shock wore off, she stood and yelled at the top of her lungs.

“SIT!!!!!”

Both demons stopped and just looked at her as if she had lost her mind.

Koga’s eyes went wide as he realized exactly what she had said. She used to do that to Inu Yasha when they had fought. It always ended with that. He would run over to her and wish her well and promise to be back for her.

She had tried to do the same thing here.

Koga looked over at Kagome and knew. ‘Oh, shit…’ was his last thought before he had to grab the enraged youkai.

The girl had finally done it. She had challenged the authority that he had been exerting over her. Koga knew that he was about to hurt like hell. But, he had to distract Sesshomaru from trying to make Kagome submit. He knew with his rational side that that would just be habit, but Sesshomaru’s rational side had been giving way more and more to his demon side lately.

Koga jumped on Sesshomaru’s back and kicked him in the back of the head.

Kagome took the moment of distraction as he stumbled a little and grabbed Koga by the scruff of the neck to run.

She skidded into a tree and stopped. Her eyes were filling with tears as she saw him bringing Koga with him. He was growling lowly as he leaned over her. Koga could feel himself wanting to loose control and allow his youkai to fight Sesshomaru’s.

He couldn’t let that happen. What would happen to Kagome? The best thing to do until the rational side came back was to keep her calm and from accidentally challenging his authority…again.

Sesshomaru went forward and sunk his fangs into his mark on Kagome. He used his hold to make her lay down.

She let out a sob and didn’t put up a fight. The last time he had bitten into her, she didn’t hurt like this. She had been distracted by the pleasure she had been receiving.

When the tall dog demon stood up and looked down at both mates, he could feel his calm and rational side pushing down the instinct. Kagome covered her face by turning it towards the ground and trying to stop her crying. Koga was glaring at him and just sitting there while he waited.

The red faded to gold and he stepped back.

Koga jumped up and looked into Sesshomaru’s eyes.

“It was a habit. Remember the beads that were around Inu Yasha’s neck? She used to ‘sit’ him to stop the fight when she felt it had been enough. You will leave her alone now. She is not ready. Her body is still changing. Something could happen; you would not want to harm either mate like that or the pup.”

Kagome slowly stood during the argument and walked through the trees just a little distance away but still out of view.

She reached down to the lower part of her belly, right above the apex of her thighs and feels the orb there. She had attached the jewel to a chain and wore it around her belly so that it was not in view.

She looked back towards where her mates were and down at the forest floor. She missed the way things used to be even though she loved her mates. She didn’t really belong here, but no longer belonged in the future-her original time. Lost, that is what she was.

She was lost in time and in her memories. Lost when it came to understanding what drove her mates as to do as they did. Lost to understanding why she had to loose all and gain all.

She had no regrets for mating with Koga and Sesshomaru. They loved her and she loved them. She did regret the loss of Inu Yasha. He was still her first love and she still loved him. They had also been friends just as she and Koga had been but a lot closer.

He would understand her loss and confusion.

Kagome allowed the words to slip past her lips as the memories flooded her.

“I wish Inu Yasha was still alive…”

She thought about what she had just said and shook her head. Turning around, Kagome located her mates and said that she was tired. She bowed her head and asked in her sweetest voice if she could sleep now.
