Doctor’s Surprise

“Why didn’t you tell me you were sick?”

Sesshomaru’s voice barely penetrated Kagome’s mind. She had woken up suddenly the next morning and throw up. She was still feeling horrible as the world rocked in front of her as if on a large boat. She didn’t bother to try to answer and Sesshomaru didn’t expect one. When he had felt her rip from his arms, he had followed her out to the pond where she was getting sick.

He had instantly sent for a doctor.

Sesshomaru waited impatiently for the doctor to arrive. He had told Jaken to make sure they stayed away from Kagome. If the illness made an adult demoness this sick, he didn’t want to chance the children. He sat next to Kagome, silently stroking her hair and gently smoothing her ears.

“Finally,” Sesshomaru growled sourly as he saw a squat doctor approach.

The doctor gasped. “What are you thinking?! Get this woman inside,” he commanded, ignoring the daggers Sesshomaru’s eyes were shooting at him.

Knowing he needed to obey him, though. Sesshomaru lifted Kagome and immediately brought her back to their room. He laid her gently on the bed as the doctor came back into the room. Taking command, the doctor shooed Sesshomaru over to one side as he examined every inch of the sick woman. Occasionally he would ask Kagome questions, but he never seemed to pay attention to the answers.

“Now lift your clothes,” the doctor’s scratchy voice insisted. Sesshomaru’s low growl held a hint of warning. “I need to examine her stomach,” he insisted methodically. “The cloth would get in the way.”

Sesshomaru gave a curt nod of understanding, but it was clear he wasn’t happy about it. Kagome hesitantly lifted her nightdress, covering her hip and below with the blanket. The doctor’s hands were surprisingly warm as they thumped and kneaded her tender stomach. Suddenly, the doctor turned away.

“Well, there is nothing to really do,” the doctor stated. “All I can do is give her some herbs to help with the vomiting.”

Sesshomaru visibly paled around his cool façade. “What do you mean?”

“I mean her pregnancy sickness will be there for another six or seven months, so all I can do is help alleviate it.”

“Pregnancy sickness?” Sesshomaru looked utterly dumbfounded. “You mean, Kagome-” The doctor gave a decisive nod.

“Oh my God,” Kagome muttered as her hand lay on her stomach.

“You mean you didn’t know?” The doctor looked at their wondrous faces. “Well, I don’t see how. I mean you are far enough along that your stomach should be rounded a little more, admittedly, but didn’t you miss any cycles?” Kagome just looked at him.

Sesshomaru still seemed to be trying to grasp the idea. “She’s really pregnant,” he mumbled half to himself. “We’re going to have a child.”

“Nuh-uh.” Sesshomaru glanced at the doctor.

“What are you talking about,” Sesshomaru asked, refusing to let his sudden worry tinge the question. Kagome was looking at the doctor in open fear.

“She will not give birth to a baby,” the doctor told them with emphasis. “She will give birth to two.”

Kagome felt her jaw drop in wonder. Sesshomaru seemed beyond comprehension now. He was staring at Kagome in sudden wonder.

“Well, I have to go. I do have other patients.” Giving a respectful, but quick bow, the doctor raced out the room.

Sesshomaru calmly went to the door the doctor had neglected to close and shut it. Turning back to Kagome, she saw his face light up with a beautiful smile. The sight made her heart flutter pleasantly. He sat on the bed beside her, kissing her gently.

“Can you believe it, Kagome,” he asked, allowing the wonder to finally touch his voice. He laid a hand over her stomach as if mesmerized that he had helped create the life within her.

Kagome could only stare into his loving ambered gaze. She was still shocked over the news, but elation was permeating through. She was soon returning Sesshomaru’s smile ten fold. She placed her hand over Sesshomaru’s, covering her stomach. Then a thought occurred to her and she gave a saddened smile.

“What’s wrong, Kagome,” Sesshomaru asked in a worried voice. He gently wiped away tear that had escaped her futile efforts to restrain from crying.

“I was just thinking of my mother and how we always talked about what would happen when I finally had my own children,” she looked at him with a watery gaze. “She always told me that she wanted to help me with them. I haven’t even seen her or my family in over two years.”

Sesshomaru pulled her close as she cried softly into his chest. He felt so helpless when he saw her like this. He could only think of one thing to do and he didn’t like it. Taking a deep breath, he readied himself to what he was about to commit himself to.

“Would you like to go see them,” he asked pulling away enough to look at her face. “We can leave tomorrow while you’re still early in your pregnancy. We’ll even bring Shippo and Rin.”

“We,” Kagome asked uncertainly. “You mean you’d go?”

Sesshomaru gave her a sideways look. “Well, I’m not going to let you go on your own.” Kagome gave him a small kiss as her thanks. Feeling very tired, she laid back into the bed and drifted off to sleep.

Sesshomaru watched her for a while before setting out to get everything ready for a trip between eras.
