Chapter Eleven
Sango dug through the box Mrs. Higurashi had handed her. Thanking her she opened it to retrieve her old exterminator's outfit. The black material greeted her like an old friend. The black and pink clothing beckoned to her. Kagome reached inside to pull out the clothes she had once despised. "Kagome are you sure?"
"Yep, its time I accepted who I am. I'll wear them with pride." She grabbed the red pants that had once reminded her of Kikyo. They took the clothing into the bathroom and changed. It was time for them to move on and be who they were. Kagome pulled her hair back as she looked into the mirror. Her reflection smiled back at her.
Sango pulled her hair in her trademark ponytail. She looked up to see Kagome watching her. "We are quite the pair aren't we?"
"Hell yes, that demon better beware." She giggled and hugged her friend. "I hate to say this but atleast Yusuke didn't get married."
Sango flushed at her bold comment. "Kagome!" True she was glad that the wedding hadn't been completed. It still meant nothing, he was in love with another woman not her. If she was meant to find love again then it would happen. "I can't believe you said that. Being around Inuyasha has corrupted you."
"Heh," She opened the door and walked out. "Don't tell me you aren't glad." They were on their way to meet the others to enter the demon world.
Two groups were being sent out in search of the demon. Koenma knew that the girls wouldn't hear of being seperated so he decided to stick them with Yusuke and Kurama. Jin, Touya, Chu and Rinku were going on their own as well. Hiei went off by himself promising to inform either group of any finds he made. The only ones still waiting at the portal were Botan, Yusuke and Kurama. The two girls were supposed to have been here over ten minutes ago.
"Damn it, whats taking them so long?" Yusuke was in a foul mood. Him and Keiko had gotten into a fight about him leaving once again. He'd tried to explain that he had to go. The demon had tried to kill not only her but her parents. It was who he was, even having been fired he was still part demon. Things like this were bound to come up, there was no way around it. She would have to accept it, so would her parents now. They were most distressed to find out that he wasn't human. Keiko had asked if they could get married real quick before he left. He hadn't known what to say to her plea. He simply told her they'd discuss getting married after he got back. Then she had complained about always waiting on him.
"Be patient," Kurama was starting to worry also. The only thing that kept him from going to look for them was remembering the performance earlier that evening. They seemed capable of taking care of themselves. Laughter rang out pronouncing their entrance. Both gasped at the image walking their way. Kagome was in traditional miko clothing making her look untouchable, her quiver was strapped to her back and the bow was held loosely in her left hand. Sango was wearing old taijiya clothing, the black and pink clothing hugging her lean form, showing off every well toned muscle.
Kurama felt his body react to the sight of Kagome smiling their way. His demonic side demanded that he make her his before returning. She was stunning and he felt pride swell in his chest knowing that she would one day be his. Yusuke on the other hand was having an emotional fight from hell. He couldn't tear his eyes from the girl. He'd always thought Keiko had a nice build but seeing Sango walk up he saw he'd been wrong. Every step spoke of power, confidence and he wanted to experience what it would feel like to have that body pressed against his.
Kurama was the first to snap back to reality. He smiled when Botan's "Oh my." caught his attention. She was staring at Yusuke who was still oggling Sango. The boy paid neither attention lost in his own thoughts. The fox felt pity for the man. If something didn't suddenly happen to stop this trip, then everything would be different upon their return. Yusuke had told him of the kiss, if this trip happened he had a feeling more than a kiss would occur. Keiko was going to be hurt in the end.
The two girls came within ear shot and Kurama greeted them. "Glad you could make it." He gave Kagome a smile.
"Where is everyone else?" Kagome asked. She figured on more people going.
"They have already gone. We split up into teams for the search. You two will be going with me and Yusuke."
Kagome felt her friend stiffen. "Umm, okay. I guess we should get going." She nodded to Botan, noticing how the girl kept returning her eyes to Kurama. There was no doubt that the girl was in love with him. It was there for everyone to see, well anyone who cared enough to pay attention.
"I will step through first, you two will follow and Yusuke will take up the rear." No, doubt enjoying the view. The fox sighed and entered. He stepped into an empty clearing, the grass was lush and wet underneath his feet. Familiar smells assaulted his nose. He scanned the area for any immediate threat upon finding it safe he took a few steps.
On the other side Kagome and Sango stared at the strange portal. Sango adjusted Hiraikotsu on her back, finding comfort in its weight. At Botan's nod they stepped in the blue light. It surrounded them for several seconds before they magically emerged into a forest. Trees were everywhere, covering the sky and most of light from the sky. They called out expecting Kurama to answer, but none came. Before they could go back the portal closed.
Kurama was waiting for them to enter and cursed when Yusuke came out instead. "I thought we agreed you would come last."
"I did, they went through right behind you." He looked around. "Where the hell are they?"
"No one stepped out after me. Someone interfered with the portal. Dammit," Kurama saw the portal close, Botan was unaware of what had transpired. "We got to do something Yusuke."
"We're going to find them. How far could they been put?"
"A few miles only, if I'm correct. Let's go, it is unwise to call out but what choice do we have." They ran off to find the missing girls.
Sango felt several demonic auras coming their way. "Do you feel that Kagome?"
"Yes, seems someone planned to get me and you alone. We are about to meet the welcoming commitee." Kagome readied her bow, "We might as well give them a Inuyasha greeting."
Sango prepared her large weapon and waited. Slowly but surely they were being surrounded. There were gaps here and there in placement, large enough to run. Escape was most unlikely since both were human and couldn't outrun most demons. Their best chance was to take a stand and fight. "We can do this."
"Right," Kagome couldn't seem to share her confidence. They were in a world filled with nothing but demons. A bad place for a miko and exterminator. Two enemies of the species roaming the very land. "What do you think the chances are of Kurama and Yusuke finding us in time?"
"Slim to none but I don't plan on dying here." The first demon broke into the clearing. It resembled a bear, standing over twenty feet tall. Its teeth were longer than the girl's arms. "He will be the first to fall." Sango released the weapon. It propelled across breaking several trees before tearing the beast in half. She caught it and was prepared for the next one.
Kagome turned and fired when a noise came from her left. Her heart stopped when she saw Kurama jump in time to keep from being purified. "Oops." She gave him a nervous smile. He merely smiled in return. Yusuke was right behind him.
Sango turned only to glance at the two, she was actually glad to see them. More demons seemed to be joining in. The news of their arrival must be spreading like wild fire. She cursed at not being able to see them until they came into view. Deciding to do something about it, she released her weapon directly in front of her. Snapping sounds were heard and a few screams as it cleared at least ten feet in front of her. Only the bottom four feet of the brush remained. It landed in her hand once more.
'This is usually the time when Inuyasha would ask if I sensed any shards.' Kagome thought to herself. Thinking of him would get her killed, so she tried focusing on the fight. Several demons came rushing at them. Before she could release her arrow, Kurama intervened, destroying them with some sort of whip. All of a sudden, everything stopped. They looked around and wondered why the approaching demons suddenly stopped coming.
Sango had a bad feeling, "Something isn't right." Nothing happened causing them to worry. Sango felt something brush across her neck and turned. Nothing was there. "What was that?" They all looked at her strangely. 'Dammit I know I felt that.' Yusuke came up to stand beside her. A scream tore through her throat as the ground opened up beneath her feet. She felt herself falling suddenly. Someone grabbed her hand but she continued to fall. Darkness took hold of her as she descended.
Kagome called out when her friend was suddenly sucked in the ground. Yusuke grabbed her hand, the force of the pull yanked him down with her. Within seconds both were gone. "Where are they?"
"I'm not sure. Seems their plan had been to first seperate you two from us, then seperate you two. All this was to get you both alone." Kurama grabbed her hand, "Come they are gone. We will try to find them but first we need to get in a better location. I will try to contact Yusuke with the communicator."
Kagome let herself be dragged away. Worry for her friend filled her. She prayed that Sango was alive.
