Chapter Ten

Kimi woke with something warm and wet running across her cheeks. She swatted at whatever it was and tried rolling over away from the nuisance, "Leave me alone." A furry muzzle started sniffing her hair and she felt a cold nose touch the side of her neck. "What the hell," she sat up and stretched her arms high above her head. The culprit was still beside her standing on all four legs. No one else was in the cave but her and her admirer. The wolf had to reach her mid-thigh on all fours, his coat was a shaggy dark brown, with patches of white covering his snout and all four paws. His eyes were a deep golden color, very unique and they were staring right at her.

"Hi, whats your name?" no reply was forthcoming. She reached her hand out slowly not wanting to spook him into attacking her. The thought of having her throat ripped out wasn't all too pleasant. "It's okay boy, I'm not going to hurt you. Yeah, you're a sweetheart aren't you." He rewarded her by taking a seat across her lap. Both his paws and upper body were resting across her upper legs and his face was now buried in her stomach. "Damn, you're heavy too but thats okay. Wonder if you have a name, how bout I give you one, anyways. I'll just call you, Socks." Her hand found the soft spot behind his ears and began to slowly message the area. He buried his head deeper in her lap, "You like that don't you."

Several minutes passed and she grew bolder moving her hand to pet the top of his head. He seemed content to let her continue, she stopped for a few seconds before placing her hand in front of his nose allowing him to smell her hand. His tongue lashed out, licking her fingers, "At least someone here likes me."

Ginta came in the cave, Kouga had sent him to wake the girl and to check her wounds. He stopped in his tracks finding THAT wolf laying across the girl. That wolf was larger than all the wolves in their pack, no one knew where it had come from. Several weeks ago it had shown up, sneaking around stealing what food it could find. When any of the wolf demons had gone near it, he'd attack them, nearly killing a few of Kouga's men. They'd been searching for the beast this morning to try and put him down before any of the pack wolves were injured. Somehow he'd snuck past all of them and made his way into their den and right to the human girl. She was lucky he hadn't torn her limbs off yet, but her luck was sure to run out. "Kimi," he took a step towards the girl.

Kimi hadn't heard anyone approaching but was jerked away from her ministrations when her name was spoken. Seconds later a growl was heard coming from the wolf laying in her lap. "Hey, how are you this morning?"

Ginta took a step forward, didn't the girl understand the danger she was in. He took another step towards her. This time the wolf stood up on all fours directly in front of the girl, baring his teeth towards the wolf demon. "Sister, don't move he's not one of ours."
Ginta tried to take a step forward but stopped when the wolf took a menacing step towards him. 'Shit, what do I do? Kouga, I'll go get Kouga.' He took a few steps back but the wolf lessened his animosity. When they were out of view he went in search of his leader. He didn't have to go far before he found him leaning against the mountain side talking to a group of men.

"You two, I want you to head south, we found some tracks there this morning. It has to be around here somewhere I want it found and killed." Kouga heard Ginta shouting his name, he saw him running up to him, "I thought I told you to see to the girl."

"The B--ea-st, its here, in there with the girl, you gotta come." he stammered.

"What!" he shoved the stuttering fool aside and ran to his cave, sure enough the beast had snuck past them and was now inside.

Kimi watched Ginta take off leaving her alone with her new friend. 'Not one of theirs, he'd said. Did he mean this wolf wasn't part of their clan? Does it matter, he was obviously friendly, except when someone snuck up on him.' Socks continued to growl at the empty space and she decided to calm him down. She reached out slowly and stoked the fur along his back hoping she wouldn't pull back a nub. Her worries disappeared when he stopped growling and took a seat on his backside beside her facing the entrance. "It's alright big guy, he didn't mean to scare you."

A growl sprang from his throat and she glanced up at the entrance to see Kouga standing there glaring. "What the hell do you think you're doing? Get away from that thing before he tears your head off. Not like it matters, I'm sure it'd be an approvement."

Kimi bristled, "Screw you, asshole. I will not move, you can't make me." As if to emphasis her point, Socks began to bear his teeth and snarl.

"Move away if you don't want to get blood all over you. I'm going to kill that bastard, so I suggest you move." He flexed his claws and cracked his knuckles. His men filled in behind him spears ready to help, now that they had the rogue wolf cornered. "Girl, I will tell you one more time, move."

Kimi pulled herself to her feet, grabbing her katana on the way up. Her ankle protested under her weight, she bit back the moan that threatened to escape her lips. Taking a step forward, she was standing beside the wolf, but his eyes never left the threat. She pointed her sword towards the group of demons now staring her down. "I will kill anyone that tries to harm him, even you, Mr. High and Mighty. I dare you to take a step forward, takes alot of courage to kill an animal that you have cornered. Nothing but a bunch of cowards, the lot of you. If you have no problem taking on a cornered animal, why not try a true challenge." Kimi threw her challenge out, so she wasn't in the best condition to fight, but she'd fought with a broken arm before during one of her sessions. Her sensei had taught her to ignore pain and focus on the fight at hand.

"Are you serious, girl? You're lucky that mutt hasn't torn you into pieces and you are willing to fight for his life. Very well, defeat my best man and you and the mutt can stay. But if on the slight chance you win, you will keep him in line, the first violent move he makes towards me or mine and I'll put him down." Kouga smirked, lets see what she had to say about that. There was no way this human could best his man in hand to hand combat. Though it would be amusing to see her try. She needed to be knocked down a peg or ten.

"I accept," gasps were heard among the men. "What are the rules?"

"Hand to hand combat, no weapons, and not to the death of course. First one to give up loses, or the one knocked unconscious loses. This is your only chance to back out, wench. I won't be held responsible if you further injure yourself." Kouga glared at the mangy creature at the girl's side. All this over a mutt, that was better off dead.

"I said I accept, but one more condition, if I win, none of your clan can go near him. You can't blame a creature for trying to defend itself. I will try to keep him at my side, agreed?" Kimi almost gloated inside. Her strong point had always been hand to hand combat while Michiko's had been weaponry.

"Hmph, not like you're going to win." Kouga snapped his fingers and a wolf demon with long brown hair stepped forward. He stood a few inches taller than Kimi, and had one hell of a body. His arms and legs were almost as big as a buick, muscles rippled in the sun. He grinned down at the little human he was about to have fun with. Kouga pointed towards the wolf, "make him stay here, I won't have him going for any throats."

"Hmph, I assure you I don't need his help." Kimi gave Socks at pat on his head which caused him to stop his growling and lay down. "Stay here, I'll be back." The wolf whimpered, and rolled over onto his side. "Later boy, I need to go kick some ass." She placed her katana down along her bag. "Don't worry, I won't be long."

Most of the wolf demons and wolves alike came out of hiding and began to form a circle, leaving enough room for the duo to spar. Kouga sighed, 'How do I get myself into these things.' He knew Nikato wouldn't hurt the girl more than necessary but something still nagged at him. Should he really let her fight, her ankle still had to be sore and she was only a human. A human that looked like Kagome but acted nothing like her. "Give them more room," the crowd drew back a few more feet. Nikato was already in the middle with his arms crossed over his chest, showing off his muscles. The females started giggling and hiding smiles behind their hands.

The girl exited a few minutes later, she'd taken the time to put her strange footwear on and to pull her long hair up into some tight, bunched up ball on top of her head. (A bun, obviously). The demons parted allowing her access to the middle, which was to be the ring. Cat calls or should it be wolf calls were heard around the ring. "Don't mess up that pretty face too much, Nikato." "If I had a go at her I don't think I'm be trying to fight her." "I know what I'd do with her pinned underneath me."

Kimi heard the snide comments, as if any of them had what it took to get her in the sack. She took her stance a few feet in front of her challenger. Her sensei's words came floating back to her. She could even picture him standing in front of the class with hands on his withered form, "Never, I repeat never, jump into a battle fists swinging. Always take the first few moments to learn your opponent's strength and weakness." At that comment Michiko had raised her hand. "Yes, blondie, even if it means taking a few licks." Should she heed her teacher's advice, she'd never fought a demon before. Having no idea what his actions would be she decided it would be the best course. She just prayed he didn't knock her block off.

Nikato smiled at the little human girl, she had some balls to stand there fearless in front of him. Most men and demons ran when confronted with him. The only demon he'd known not to run from him was Kouga. Even he didn't stand a chance against their leader, after getting the blessing of their ancestor's and acquiring the weapon known as, Goraishi, he'd become a force all it's own. (AN: in the manga, I forget what volume but it was recent. Kouga visited some graveyard and acquired this weapon. I'm not all to sure what power it has just that it transformed into claws for him and did some kind of lightning attack. Just to fill that in for those that don't read the manga.) "Don't worry I'll make this quick." He charged the girl planning on ending it with one blow.

Kimi saw him rushing at her, and took a defensive stance, 'Dammit, can't believe I'm about to take one in the face for some stupid canine.' She braced herself for the impact and wasn't disappointed when his fist made complete contact with her jaw knocking her back and sliding across the hard mountain floor. She was only down a second before she got back on her feet. Kouga stood there, he'd seen Nikato charging the girl, but everyone knew that he was tough but slower than most demons. The girl should have been able to dodge if she'd seen it coming. Which she had, from the stance she'd taken. Why did she let herself take a hit? Suddenly, he felt there was more to the girl than he first suspected.

"Back up, girl? You should just stay down and admit defeat, I don't wanna scar that pretty face of yours." He snickered and made another go at her. This time the girl did dodge. At the last second she swerved to the right having his fist miss her face by a few inches. "What?" Before he could question how he missed. He felt something slam into the back of his neck.

Kimi saw him rushing for her once again, she'd be damned if he got a chance to hit her again. The bastard hit like a brick but was slower than her grandma. A second after his fist passed where her face had been, she spun on her heel, giving him a roundhouse kick to the back of the neck sending him forward into the dirt. "Of course, I'm back up you dog, you hit like a girl." Laughter shot out causing the demon to climb back on his feet.

"So you wanna play do you? There's something you should know about me, bitch, I am the strongest of all the wolf tribes. And I'll soon have you crying on your knees." He charged her again aiming to take her down. This time she didn't dodge but stood with her left foot in front of her to brace herself and her right a few inches behind her. He brought his right fist down, meaning to knock the girl senseless.

His fist never made it, a good foot away from her face she caught his fist in her hand. The impact almost knocked her backwards, only a second passed and he tried swinging with his left since his right was still caught in her tiny one. She had expected this move and caught that one too. "Do you think you are stronger than me girl," he put his strength behind his arms. Only two feet of space seperated their bodies. He would shove the girl on her lily white ass.

"There's something you should know about me," she grinned when he got a confused look on his face. She brought her right leg straight up between their bodies landing a kick to his chin sending him backwards. Whiping the blood from her lip courtesy of the first time he punched her, "I'm very flexible, asshole." She was getting tired already and her ankle was throbbing, it was almost impossible for her to stand up and the asshole was made like a stonewall. There had to be a way to force him to give up, she didn't see herself knocking him out. Maybe if she could somehow throw his head into the side of the mountain. She almost giggled at the thought, 'Hey, Mr.Wolf bend over and let me use your head as a ram.'

He heard her giggle, the bitch was laughing at him. He charged her again heedless of his actions. She saw him charging again and damn it all she was getting irritated. All because that stupid Kouga, didn't like it because her new pet had bigger balls, he had to get all huffy and bent out of shape. This time his aim wasn't to punch her but to plow her down, she hadn't realized they were playing football. Well, there was always one way to bring down a man, atleast she thought he was male. She'd soon see if the wolfman had nards. Within a foot of her she brought her foot up as fast as she could landing squarely between his legs, it must have worked cause he landed with a thud on his knees.

"Owwwwww," all the males demons groaned as her foot made contact with his groin. No one liked to be kicked in the jimmy. He grabbed his injured privates and howled. Kimi grimaced, she hadn't meant to kick him that hard. Sorrow filled her knowing she'd caused dire injury to another person even if it was a demon. Nikato growled as he cupped himself, "Who taught you that little trick, your whore mother?"

Sorrow was instantly replaced by rage. Her aura flared as thoughts of her mother spun through her mind. Her gentle smile, the way she was always there for her children , always putting their happiness above her own. She was unaware that her body started to glow and sparks of pure energy shot from her being. Nikato watched as the girl changed infront of him, he saw his death in her eyes. She brought her fist smashing it into his jaw, his flesh was burned along the side of his face and he was laying on the ground screaming in agony. "Speak ill towards my mother again and I shall kill you."

Kouga stepped forward, "Enough. The victory is yours, I won't let you purify one of my men. Take him inside, see to his wounds and his pride." He watched his men carry the injured wolf off, he was actually beginning to cry. Not that Kouga blamed him bad enough the wench had kicked him squarely in the pride but purified one side of his face, he'd be scarred for the rest of his life. The girl still stood glaring at the retreating figure of her opponent. "Go back inside, return to your mutt."

She glanced towards him, two sets of blue eyes meeting, clashing. "Fine," she spun on her heels and marched inside his cave leaving him alone. He had to give her, her due, she was more than capable of taking care of herself. Another thing to add to his list of why he disliked the girl. He wasn't sure what pissed him off more, the fact that she could probably hold her own in a fair fight against him or the fact that he was attracted to her.

Kimi sat down beside the wolf, she had just spared and stroked his fur. He placed his head in her lap and whined, as if he could feel the girl's inner emotions. Tears streamed down her cheeks, 'What a way to start the day.'
