CHAPTER 12: DEATH WISH
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Now, that is no way to treat a potential business partner is it?” She smiled at him over her shoulder. Kagome was kneeling on all four with her backside toward the enemy. ‘Kagome! Do you have a death wish?’ Her mind screamed. ‘Why are you provoking him?’
That remark seemed to still the wild beast raging inside her living room. “You dare to provoke me?”
‘Don’t answer that Kagome don’t!’ Yelled the voice in her head. “I dare what I wish. Now what is this deal you are slow to speak of?” Kagome asked in a sweet tone. Right at the moment she felt like she could take on the world especially the Inuyoukai in her living room. Anger did amazing thing to her way of thinking. She was getting up to stand, but he prevented it when he pushed her back down on all fours.
Sesshoumaru just towered over Kagome. He peered at her with his deadly angelic features showing no emotion. Kagome just notched her proud head up at him.
‘Interesting, she show no fear. Maybe she won’t be to disappointing after all, for a human. Pity you didn’t keep her brother. But, before she agrees to my terms she needs to know her place.’ Sesshoumaru thought darkly. “Do you know, wench, that if Naraku does buy out the company, that everyone in that company will be let go?” His words were slicing through her defiant shield. “He is almost as ruthless as I, Sesshoumaru. Then what would you, pitiful human, do for a job. As I hear it, you support your grandfather’s shrine. If you have no job then it will be foreclosed on. But, that isn’t the half of it. How would you feel, knowing that you could have saved them all, but you foolish pride got them in the way?” It was cold as steel the way he dig into her emotions.
It was sinking in slowly. Kagome’s face fell. ‘How does he now that? Grandpa’s shrine is in debt, but I am working with the banks to pay off the loans.’ Her thoughts then drifted to others in the company. ‘How would they survive without a job?’ She was sure that she wasn’t the only one that was dependant on this job for the income. Kagome felt ashamed of herself for being selfish. “What are your terms of this deal?” she asked meekly. “Surely there is some underlying benefit you seek from this agreement? Or, why else would you be here.” Kagome tried to move, but found that she was now plastered against Sesshoumaru for the second time tonight.
“If you willing accept my terms Kagome Higurashi, then know that I will back my brother’s company financial so that the take over is not successful, and help your grandfather’s shrine from financial ruin.”
Kagome had a difficult time thinking with the powerful golden eyes looking at her. “Bu- but,” she stammered “you haven’t told me what you want from me, that is, if I agree with this.”
He set her down on her feet then let her go. Sesshoumaru took his time answering her question.
“Well?” Kagome demanded.
“It is simple Kagome Higurashi.” He replied with a simple tone that suggested he was getting bored. “Marry me.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Are you serious?!” She choked in disbelief.
“I assure you that I am very serious.” Sesshoumaru replied indignantly.
“I don’t know.” Kagome started running her hand through her hair. “There’s something slightly shady about this.” She thought mentally, but hadn’t realized that she said it out loud; until she heard a growl. ‘Way to go Kags.’
“I would think that you would accept this deal without hesitation.”
“I’m thinking.” She shot back. Kagome’s mind was racing at the speed of light. ‘Why me? Couldn’t he have any woman? Woman, wait he hates humans….It would help Inuyasha. It would secure the company…..’
“The question you should be asking yourself Kagome Higurashi, is at what price are you willing to go to save yourself, your friends, and the hanyou that you so desperately love.”
Kagome turned away trying to fighting the emotions that statement made. It just made even more questions arise that she didn’t want to answer. At least not right now, however; there was one question that was burning to be answered. “Why me, Sesshoumaru? I mean you could have any woman you wanted, but then there's that undeniable fact that you hate humans. So, the question is why marry one? Unless, there is something else at stake, which is you are leaving out.”
“Do you remember five months ago when InuTaisho died?” He didn’t give her time to answer the question. “In his will he left certain specific contingencies in order for me to acquire my due.” He grated out through his sparkling white teeth. There was a flash of rage in his eyes before he quickly suppress those rising emotions.
‘Uh oh, this must me a sore subject, Kags.’ She barely saw the unmistakable emotional flare in his golden eyes. Yet, she didn’t care, if she agreed to this “deal or business agreement,” she wanted to know everything.
“What were the stipulations of the will, Sesshoumaru? I ask, only because if I agree I think I have a right to know. In a real business deal I would read the fine print before signing anything, so…”
She made a good argument. He would not expect anything less from a business deal so why would she. I should give her more credit, he thought. Beauty and brains. “The stipulations are that I marry a human, make her my mate, and have a child with her before I turn thirty.” He watched her reaction to what he was saying. There was nothing. It hadn’t fazed her at all, or at least she was masking it. Sesshoumaru was getting tired and needed to get away. “I will give you til’ Monday to think it over. But, then the deal is void Kagome Higurashi.” With that he left.
The rest of the weekend was a blur to Kagome; it pasted her like the wind gentle caressing the leaves in a tree. There momentarily, then gone in a blink of an eye. Kagome during the weekend intentionally secluded herself. She didn’t answer any of the phone calls that came to the house. Sango left close to twenty calls and threatened to come over if she didn’t answer the phone, and soon Kagome darted for the phone and answered. The conversation was one-side. Kagome listened while Sango chewed her ear off for about an hour. It was about Miroku’s perverted attics, the club, life in particular, etc.
Sango could tell there was something wrong with Kagome but assumed it was about the decking Kikyou incident. “You know Kags, you didn’t do anything wrong. You were defending yourself against the wicked witch.”
“Um, yeah. I guess Sango. I really don’t want to talk about it. I will see you Monday.”
Before Sango could reply, Kagome hung up the phone.
