Conflicted Hearts

Koga tried to focus more on his work than on the half-naked girl sitting on his bed as she dried herself off, but with every day she stayed there, the urge to just take her was getting to be too much on his end. Kagome had already been there for a week…and it had been the best week of his entire life. Every morning, she’d wake up him with breakfast, they’d sit at the breakfast table and talk, and then they’d each get ready for school. Depending on how he felt, he’d treat Kagome to a snack from the pastry shop as they walked to school together and since being with her always put him in a good mood, he was more than happy to empty out his wallet to buy her favorite type of baked good for her. He also noticed that Kagome was fitting in more and more at her new school. During gym, Kagome would talk with her friends and even do a little mock fortune telling. Kagome was like clockwork; everyday at two-pm, just before her final class, she’d go to the old library, stand in front of the newly-fixed window and pray for Asahiro. When school was finally over, Kagome would wait for him in his office and then they’d go home together. Koga always looked forward to seeing what Kagome would cook him and then, they’d both take (separate) baths and head off to bed. It was a monotonous cycle, but as long as he could be with her, he didn’t care.

“Koga-sensei?”

He looked at her as she continued drying off. Koga tried not to imagine what she looked like under that white towel of hers…he knew if he did, there would be no stopping him.

“What’s up, Kagome?”

“I was thinking about going home tomorrow…”

“Why? So soon?”

”So soon? It’s been a week. I don’t want to put you out anymore. Besides…I think I’m finally over Inuyasha. Atleast…that’s what I’d like to believe. Anyway, the shrine is my responsibility.”

Koga stood up and walked over to the bed dropping on one knee in front of her. He took her hands and smiled up at her.

“Is that what you really want?”

Kagome nodded, but the tears were visible in the corner of her eyes.

“It’s just…I can’t stand it. Inuyasha’s so unclear with how he feels about me; Kikyo’s having a baby…so I’ll never be able to be with him. Ever.”

“Kagome, your first love doesn’t have to be your only love.”

Kagome could feel Koga brush her tears away with the calloused pads of his thumbs. Kagome opened her eyes, putting her hand on the side of her kind teacher’s face. Slowly, Koga leaned in and pressed his lips to hers. Kagome had to admit, she enjoyed kissing her sensei very much; maybe it was his overall maturity that allowed him to lay her down on the soft, king-sized bed. Maybe it was the way he whispered that he cared for her that allowed him to gently kiss at the side of her neck, which elicited small moans and whimpers from her mouth. Kagome watched with much chagrin as Koga hovered over her, a serious look, hardening his intense facial features. He knew what they were doing, or attempting to do anyway, was wrong and immoral. Was he just taking advantage of her vulnerability right now? For the past week, the most the closest thing to sexual the two had ever encountered was when he’d kiss her forehead, but even then, it was a loving gesture and no indication of wanting to take things further.

“Kagome…”

He watched as her cheeks tinted a cute rose color before she hesitantly opened her towel, revealing herself to him. It was Koga’s turn to blush; her young, beautiful body was worthy of being put upon a pedestal. For the first time in his life, Koga was at crossroads when it came to a woman’s body. He wasn’t sure he wanted to touch her, for fear of breaking her, like some priceless, porcelain doll. When Kagome sensed his hesitation, she closed her eyes, grabbed his hand and placed it directly over her left breast. He could feel her rapid heartbeat between his fingers and he half-smiled.

“You’re as nervous as I am.”

“Why are you so nervous…?” Kagome asked, slowly.

He sat back on his heels for a few minutes as Kagome sat up, pressing her towel to her chest once more. He reached out, gently stroking the side of her face.

“You’re just so…precious to me, Kagome…but like it or not, I’m still a man. I want to protect you, but at the same time…I want to rip that delicate little body of yours apart with my own.”

Kagome blushed at his words that were both threatening, erotic and arousing; spoken words that a teacher should never be saying to his student.

“Heh…but I’m not an animal. I’m not going to do anything to you unless you’re positive that your heart is in order.”

”My heart…?”

”Kagome, you still have feelings for Inuyasha, don’t you?”

Kagome’s eyes widened and she looked down at her bare lap. Could anyone blame her if she did? Inuyasha may have not been her everything, but for the past ten years, he’d been her reason for living. She loved him for everything he did for her; everything he had done for her…and everything he would do for her.

“But…I…I can’t keep betraying Kikyo like this…!”

Koga watched as Kagome bit her lip; a habit of hers that hinted at the forthcoming of tears. Despite her state of undress, he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. Koga may have blueballs for the next year if he told her this, but he knew it was something that needed to be said…

“Kagome…you can’t keep running away from this situation. I know it’s hard, but you have to accept the reality in front of you…Kagome, your sister is going to have a baby, Inuyasha is going to be a father and a husband. So, I just want you to face this and not hide from it. Inuyasha has promised that he’d never bother you again, right?”

“Yeah…” Kagome gave a small nod.

“And I bet that’s killing you inside…”

Kagome nodded her head, whimpering her answer. Kagome honestly hated the fact that no matter what she did, be it cutting her hair or piercing her ears, or what she said, telling Inuyasha to leave her alone…she would always be in love with Inuyasha. Her shoulders slumped down and her bangs shadowed her eyes. She was quiet for a minute before a loud sob tore from her lips.

“But I can’t stand this…! I don’t want to be in love with him! It just hurts so much…!” she shook her head.

Koga put his hands on her shoulders, steadying her. He honestly wanted to beat the hell out of Inuyasha for hurting Kagome the way he had been doing for so long, but he knew he had to put his personal vendetta on hold; Kagome needed him right now.

“Kagome, only you have the power to stop loving him. I can’t tell you how, I can’t say when…but I can assure you one thing; you will get over him.”

Kagome shook her head, trying to cease the tears that kept coming to her eyes. She wrapped her arms around her kind teacher, whimpering slightly. She knew he was right, but God, why did it have to hurt so much? Hadn’t she done enough to steel herself against all of these feelings she’d been having? The shrill ring of her cell phone was enough to bring Kagome out of her deepest thoughts and back into the reality in front of her; Koga was holding her with one arm while he reached for Kagome’s cell phone on the nightstand. Koga handed her the cell phone with a half-smile. Kagome hesitantly put the phone to her ear and sighed.

“Hello?”

Koga released her in favor of going to make her some hot chocolate. He knew that Kagome would need some time to herself and that she was going through a lot. The girl was only fifteen after all. Koga sighed with slight exasperation; not for her, but for himself. She was fifteen and here he was trying to mail jailbait out of her. Still, how could anyone blame him? Kagome was beautiful, sensual and had a kind spirit. Koga growled slightly at the thought of that asshole Inuyasha breaking her spirit; who was he to do anything to Kagome like that? He was so lost in his own thoughts for a personal vendetta against Inuyasha he didn’t hear Kagome come into the kitchen until she was standing by his side at the counter.

“Kagome…”

“That was my sister. She is passing on the shrine to me on Sunday.”

“Really? You ready for that?” he asked, handing her the mug of cocoa.

Kagome took a long drink of it before releasing a sigh.

“I…I don’t know, honestly. It’s in three days, though.”

“So what are you going to do?”

“Well, I was thinking of doing a little soul-searching.”

“Huh?”

Kagome looked at him with a soft smile before turning to look at the cup of hot chocolate in her hands.

“I was thinking of going to the Kyoto mountains to train. Train my body, my spirit and my mind.”

“Alone? No freakin’ way!”

“If I don’t, I can’t successfully inherit the shrine…and I won’t be able to go on, either.”

Koga sighed, running his hand through his long, black hair. Kagome wondered what could possibly be going through his mind at this point. She was aware of how it was upsetting him, but…

“Since tomorrow is Friday, I’ll just tell your teachers you suddenly got sick. That way, you won’t be in trouble for missing school tomorrow.”

Kagome’s eyes lit up and Koga turned to look at her, smiling slightly.

“Little troublemaker…I’m not happy with this, but you’d better be back by Sunday or else I will have wasted a trip to the shrine for nothing.”

“You’ll come to the ceremony?” Kagome asked, eyes wide.

“Well, duh, Kagome.” He said, playfully putting his fist to her cheek.

Kagome giggled, feeling much better than she had in the past couple of weeks. When the sun arose the next morning, Koga escorted her to the train station. As they stood on the platform, the train for Kyoto pulling in, Kagome bowed her head, thanking him for everything.

“If you’re really thankful, kiss me.”

Kagome blushed bright red, quickly looking around. She was certain that people were staring at her and the handsome young man with her.

“Okay…”

She closed her eyes, pressing her lips to his. It was a simple, sweet kiss that last no more than three seconds, but it was good enough for Koga. As he slowly broke the kiss, he brushed a tear away from her eye and kissed her forehead.

“Better hurry up before the train leaves without you. I’ll see you Sunday, okay?”

“Okay.” Kagome smiled.

As Kagome boarded the train, she turned in the doorway and looked at him.

“Tell my sister not to worry about me. I’ll be back on Sunday.”

“You got it.” He winked.

Kagome nodded and went to find her seat on the train. She waved to him, as the train pulled off, tears rolling down her cheek, but a smile on her face nonetheless. The train pulled away from the platform and out of sight. Kagome settled into her seat and sighed. She closed her eyes, feeling a bit drained. The whole training trip was a product of her impulsiveness and the only one who knew where she was going was Koga. Not Kikyo, and definitely not Inuyasha. Kagome prayed to the Kamis that when she returned on Sunday, she’d be a stronger person, a stronger woman…and worthy of taking over the Higurashi Shrine in place of her sister.
