Chapter 11
Kaede's Final Visit

Kagome kneeled carefully, what was Kaede’s gravesite. There was no marker to indicate her grave, just a mound of dirt. There was still a charred order in the air, and it gave her an eerie feeling. She was supposed to protect her and take care of her. However, the prince’s voice rang true. If she’d been there-. She closed her eyes, trying to keep the tears back, from the recent memories. She felt ashamed; she felt that she failed—even now, sitting before her.

It was only natural to feel guilty. She turned, noticing Inuyasha was up a ways standing on a small hill, looking over the land. The breeze blowing through his long white hair, as his silver highlights glistened in the suns rays. Oh, she could feel herself heat up with a sudden desire. She shook her head, trying to shake the lustful thoughts. It didn’t matter how good he looked, she chided to herself, all he has to do is open his mouth. And, all you have to do is kiss him…

Great, where did that thought come from…? Kiss him, yeah that’s what he’s waiting for…arrogant bastard! She turned her head away quickly, her cheeks flushed. She was here to grieve…not have sinful desires with the man on top of the hill.

Inuyasha was off in the distance. He wasn’t a sentimental person, and he already said his goodbyes. It was Kagomes’ turn, and would give her the all the time she needed. Death was common, and even though he was hurting, he didn’t dwell at the loss. He was sure Kaede was in a far better place, and her demise would not be in vain.

He would make sure of that! He snarled. He knew it was Naraku! God, how could his father not see it? He needed more proof; he huffed with a distained snort. It was evident with the scenery around him; maybe his father should take a ride in his own kingdom. Maybe that would be all the confirmation he would need.

Kagome laid the flowers over her mound. “Thank you, for everything that you’ve done for me.” She raised her hand catching the tear sliding down her cheek.

Inuyasha’s ears twitched, as he listened to her. Turning around he adjusted his sword and sat in the soft grass, listing contently. He had perfectly good hearing. It wouldn't be trouble for him to ease into her conversation. Maybe he would finally get some answers.

“Why Kaede…” she dug her nails in the ground, grief filling her eyes. “Why did you leave me? What am I going to do now? How will I ever be able to return home?”

She can’t return home…why. Damn…why won’t she tell me?

Kagome lost still in her grief, didn’t notice the prince sitting a distance behind her. She closed her eyes, “I tried to use the well again, the night that you passed—, but it didn’t work.”

Inuyasha frowned; a well—what in the hell is she talking about! He growled softly, yet angrily. He was confused, and began tapping his fingers impatiently on his thigh.

“I only pray that one day it will re-open and I will be able to see my family again.”

“Re-open?” he mumbled softly. She’s lost it. His eyes lit up in realization. She was talking about that old well…the one she almost jumped into, when I first found her. He growled angered, she wants to leave here.

Kagome secured a loose ringlet of hair behind her ear, “I’m staying at the palace…a guest of the young prince now, Kaede. Although, I wish, you were still around to give me some sound vice. I’m having boy problems.” She could feel her cheeks heat up. “I think I like the prince…but I’m unsure with how I feel. Everything has just been so complex; I just don’t know what to do?”

So’ she likes me! He smirked as his fang peaked from his mouth. She’s unsure… He smiled, she’ll give in, I’ll make sure of that!

Kagome sighed, “I can’t be with a prince, Kaede! I don’t even know what to do when I had to address the King! I don’t even feel like I belong here. Everyone around me keeps addressing me so formally. I’m just a normal young woman, who just trying to figure out what College I will attend, or I worry about what to wear—I’m far from wealthy. I guess that makes me a commoner in your time.”

Inuyasha’s ears flattened with disappointment. His father would never let him marry her now—especially when he found out she wasn’t noble blood. He didn’t care, and still wanted her very much. He felt hurt that she did not trust him enough to tell him. Of course, he didn’t have a right to be upset either; he was the one ease-dropping on her conversation.

He stood up, Kagome needed to fess up to him now! Currently he knew some of her secrets, she’d been hiding, and he wanted to know what this College-thing was?

Kagome stood up, dusting the dirt off her dress. “I will see you again, Kaede…I do miss you dearly.” With all her strength, she finally felt like she had some closure. Inuyasha promised that he would avenge her.

Turning around she could see Inuyasha staring at her, and the way he looked was intense. She frowned in concern, was he listening…could he hear me that far away. It must be…she had to try. “Inuyasha…” She watched his ears perk up at the mention at his name. “Oh, shit!” what was she going to do now? Inuyasha must’ve heard her entire conversation. However, she really hoped he didn’t. She wasn’t exactly sure what to say to him: “Hi, I’m Kagome and I come from the future!” yeah he would think that I’m absolutely insane.

She was unsure on what to do next, should she flee; since that’s what her instincts where telling her to do. Should I stay and face up, and confess everything to him. Alternatively, she could always just point up ask him what exactly did he hear? Maybe she was just over-reacting, and caught the last little bit of her conversation. Taking a deep breath, she steeled herself from the inevitable. “How much did you hear Inuyasha?”

Inuyasha started approaching her, he wanted to be close enough just encased she would run. She had a habit of that; he smirked. “I want answers Kagome! I heard everything!” He yelled, watching her shocked reaction. “What are you going to do? You know you have no choice but to answer to me.”

Why that no good—! “I don’t have to answer to you! I don’t have to answer to anyone!” Kagome shouted. She watched his angry expression; she finally listened to reason and ran towards the creek where she would bathe sometimes. At least she had a slight head start and she knew the surrounding area fairly well.

Lifting up her dress, she hopped over small twigs, and ducked under the limbs from the vast amount of trees. She could feel her hair unwinding from her non-secured pins.

She knew that the trees were slowing her pace; she didn’t look behind her and just kept at her destination.

Inuyasha growled; she just had to run! Out of all the woman he has met, he had to like the one who was stubborn, as hell. Not only was she obstinate she was defiant, and truly spirited. He snarled she should be lucky, considering…he never forced her to address him properly. Other lords would hurt or even killed her. But, no? She has to be defiant when I expect answers! He huffed, and took to the trees.

Kagome had made it to the small stream and smiled. just up ahead was a pathway that led up to a dirt road. Veering right, she pushed the leaves aside and continued. She didn’t expect to run into someone, as she fell backwards. However, a pair of hands grabbed her before she hit the ground. She prayed when she opened her eyes, that it wasn’t the prince.

“M’lady, are you alright?” a girl’s voice asked.

Well she wasn’t expecting a female to answer. She slowly opened her eyes, when she saw two people who looked the same age as she. The man with the jet-black hair and stunning sapphire blue eyes was still holding her hand. “Thank you,” she said smiling. “Who are you?”

“M’lady, I am Koga, and this is Rin.” He said respectfully, dropping her arm. He never in his life had he seen such a finer creature as he did now.

“Are you lost?” she couldn’t help but ask. They looked practically starved, and exhausted.

“We are in search of a lady by the name of Kaede…do you know of her?” Rin asked hopeful.
]
Kagomes held her head down solemnly, “Kaede has passed away…I’m sorry.”

Just then, a rustle of branches was heard, as Inuyasha jumped down between Kagome and the newcomers. “Why are you on my land?” his question was direct and to the point. He also wanted to know why that boy’s hand was touching what was his.

Koga and Rin looked at the man shocked.

“Please forgive us Sire,” Rin said, as she bowed before him. “We come for help and sanctuary.”

“Who sent you?”

“We’re sent by the fox demon Shippo. He said to come to the old lady Kaede’s house and then she would be able to help us. She said she would know what to do?” Rin answered truthfully, as Koga nodded in agreement.

Inuyasha eyes rose with recognition, and it didn’t go unnoticed by Koga.

“Sire…? Do you know of Shippo?”

Inuyasha smirked, “I’ve heard of him. His reputation is perceivable. Tell me, why is that fox involved? What kind of trouble are you two in?”

Kagome raised her eyes with concern.

Rin lowered her head, fearful of the prince before her. His tone exudes with authority. Would they be sent back? Only to be slaughtered by their friend. Would he turn us in? The look in his eyes hinted impatience, as she watched him cross his arms over his chest. “Please forgive me sire.” She watched as he nodded, taking a deep breath, she told him everything.

Kagome gasped how anyone could be so cruel was beyond her. “Inu–?” she caught herself “I mean sire…we have to help them!”

Inuyasha turned back towards Kagome, “We aren’t finished either Kagome!” he said sternly as he snatched her arm forcefully. “Follow me, we will see what the king decides.”

Shippo awoke abruptly, when he heard a twig snap in the background. Opening his emerald green eyes, he searched for the noise. Seeing no one around, he used his acute sense of smell, to detect animal from human. He growled slightly, “Well Hiten, it’s about time you found me? I was starting to get worried when you didn’t arrive sooner.”

Hiten stepped away from a large maple tree, “Well you know…you’re not exactly easy to track. Tell me why you’re all the way out here and not back at the palace?”

“On such a day like today, I love to get out and be with nature. It helps me clear my head.” Shippo chuckled, “besides…you said it yourself…I’m a Fox, and foxes like myself, don’t like to be cooped up inside a stuffy room.”

“Cut the crap,” Hiten snorted. “What is your real purpose out here?”

Shippo stood up dusting off the leaves and dirt on his auburn tunic. Shippo looked down, “you know what I have to do tomorrow,—do you have to even ask?”

“We have to do what is ordered. I cannot go against Naraku…damn Shippo, don’t you get it! Naraku owns us. Do I agree…no I don’t! What’s done has to be done!”

Shippo growled, “Well, I’m glad to see you don’t care when you rip away kids from their families…only to be murdered in front of their parent’s eyes. I don’t want to do that insensible act. I absolutely refuse!” Shippo clenched his fist; he needed to calm down, besides he didn’t want Hiten to think that he was a coward either. “I just hope that the Lord above forgives us for our sins we are about to commit. Just leave me be and let me think.”

Shippo turned his head away, sickened in what he was about to say. “It will be done Hiten; I won’t go against Lord Naraku!” He couldn’t deny that…if he didn’t do as ordered, my they would be suspicious of him.

“Very well Shippo,” although Hiten didn’t seem very convinced. He contemplated on telling this to his brother. He would dwell on it further.

Shippo watched him turn away. He was truthful, and knew what horrible act he would have to undergo. Out of everything that’s happened to him in the past. This is one of the worse; he’d never killed children before.
