Repercussions

“Are you going to be all right, Miss Kagome,” Rin asked in her normal quiet voice.

Kagome was sitting on the porch, trying to will herself not to feel so nauseous. Sesshomaru was in his study as usual while she watched over Shippo and Rin play. Usually she’d be out with them, but she felt so sick. They children were rather worried, but she kept telling them to go back to having fun.

Everyone in the mansion knew of Kagome and Sesshomaru less than a week after the incident. The servants gossiped like crazy, but Sesshomaru didn’t seem to mind. Kagome had learned to deal with his distant manner in public during their eight month relationship. He made up for it so well when they were alone that she never worried.

For the last two or three days, though, she hadn’t been feeling to well. It was the worst today and she couldn’t make herself be as energetic as the children were so used to. Even at fifteen and thirteen, Shippo and Rin showed no signs of losing their hyperactivity. Reluctantly, she finally made them leave her be.

Kagome did well at hiding her sickness in front of anyone who would tell Sesshomaru. She knew Rin and Shippo might be tempted, but they thought she would tell him. Sesshomaru had become so protective of her that Kagome doubted she would let him know. He’d send for a doctor immediately if he knew how horrible she felt.

She wondered dimly if it wouldn’t be a good idea. She had missed her last two periods, but that had happened before when her demon-blood placed stress on her human blood. Of course, that usually only happened for one month and, even then, it sometimes just came late. This plus her sudden illness pointed to something she really didn’t know if she could handle.

Out of habit, Kagome checked the position of the sun. It was almost time for dinner. Wearily getting to her feet, she let out a whistle to bring the kids back to the house. Following their hyper speed at a much slower pace, Kagome led them to wash up for dinner.

Kagome walked in behind the children, masking her ill-scent. As she walked past Sesshomaru, she laid a hand on his shoulder. Covering her hand for a second was the most affection he usually showed in public. Kagome took her usual seat across from him as Shippo sat next to Jaken. Rin sat across from Shippo.

The two children were a torture for Jaken now. Shippo enjoyed scaring and occasionally scorching Jaken with his FOXFIRE. Rin always encouraged him by laughing and generally giggling with glee. Kagome was always telling Shippo to behave and fussing at Rin for supporting Shippo’s misbehavior. The double trouble duo was becoming quite a handful.

“How did they behave today,” Sesshomaru asked from across the table. He had a queer look in his eyes.

Kagome swallowed the small bite she had in her mouth. She tried not to smile to broadly as she thought of how well he fell into his fathering role. “They behaved well today,” she told him vaguely.

He lifted a questioning brow. “No problems?”

“Well, they tried to climb a wall in the courtyard to get to the pasture, but I dealt with it.” Kagome gave him a reassuring smile. She watched as he turned to give both children reproachful looks. Under his gaze, they sank in their seats shamefacedly and murmured their apologies. Sesshomaru gave a satisfied nod.

After dinner, Kagome went through her normal routine with putting the children to bed. Kagome was feeling a little better if still a might sluggish. As usual, she gave them both kisses on their foreheads as they went to bed. Before they would part, they gave each other a hug. When they were tucked securely into bed, Kagome headed for the room Sesshomaru and she now shared.

When she reached the room, it was empty. Shrugging out of her blue kimono, she slipped into her sleep gown. Lying down, she waited for Sesshomaru. She was pretty sure he was either training or bathing. She was determined to wait for him, but sleep claimed her weary body.

Sesshomaru walked into their room, not three minutes later. Kagome’s scent announced her presence and he turned a loving gaze on her form huddled in his bed. He dimly thought of the other demonesses that had filled his bed. None had lasted for more than a week and none had ever captured his heart. Quickly, he switched into his sleeper pants and climbed into bed beside her. Suddenly a tickling sensation touched his sensitive smell sense.

Stopping in confusion, he tried to register the new scent surrounding his demoness. He knew he had smelled the tantalizing perfume from somewhere before, but he couldn’t for the life of him remember when. ‘Maybe she had taken the kids out in the forest for a while’ he thought dismissively. She had done it before and come back smelling of new scents. Sesshomaru was too tired to actively worry about it, though. Touching her skin, he noted she had no fever, and so he slid deeper into bed beside her.

Pulling her familiarly soft body against his stronger, less wielding body, Sesshomaru fell into a deep, calming sleep.
