Chapter Ten
Kurama stood beside Hiei not sure what to say at the moment or how to react. For a minute he'd thought they would all die at the hands of the foul demon. He'd tried desperately to move as did the others. Horror filled him as the demons descended upon his friends. To have them saved by none other than Sango stunned them all. The large weapon had landed back in her hand with ease for someone so small. It was obvious she was use to handling the large object. What stunned him more was when Kagome stood there defiantly bringing down a group with only one arrow. He'd been right in assuming she possessed great holy powers. The fact that she knew how to control them was entirely different, she would pose a greater threat to demons than the ex-detective had. She had looked beautiful, composed, almost godlike standing with her legs slightly apart.
Yusuke felt his heartbeat slow, calming down finally. He'd been scared for himself and Keiko when the demons had charged them. But nothing compared to the fear he'd felt as he watched Sango rush into battle. The human girl was going to get herself killed trying to protect them. Watching her go head on with the lead demon left him speechless. His announcement had caused them all to stop. She was a Taijiya, an exterminator of demons, the last of her kind. If he remembered right, the last had supposedly died over five hundred years ago. She couldn't be that old, being a human after all. At being able to move once again, he'd actually taken a step forward. His heart had demanded that he go check on her. Kieko's hand restrained him unknowingly.
No one else moved or spoke. The demons stared in awe at the two ningen females that had just shown that not all human fighters were as useless in battle as Kuwabara. The few humans still cowered on the ground not sure if it was safe yet. Except Shizuru, she stood up having taken cover. Unlike the two girls still standing away from the wedding party she was no fighter.
The silence was broken by none other than Souta. "That was way cool. You two are awesome," he ran up to them. At first he'd been worried about both. He'd never seen them fight an actual demon before. Of course he'd seen Inuyasha but the boy had done all the work while him and Kagome had ran.
Botan was the next to speak. "Oh dear I'll have to inform Koenma of this at once. I shall return considering you two can't get married with the preached dead." She withdrew her oar and took off for spirit world.
Both girls were headed back into the main house. Sango had blood on her white shirt, from decapitating that one demon. It wasn't much but Mrs. Higurashi told her to go clean up. Seeing blood on the girl had unnerved her. As they approached Kuzuma jumped up from the ground, "That's it." He looked around for the demon that attacked him. Upon seeing everyone moving once more he stammered, "Hey where did he go?"
"You are trully pathetic," this came from Hiei.
"Fraid you are a little late once again bro." Shizuru lit a cigarette.
"But what happened? I thought you guys couldn't move." Kuwabara had been ready to continue the fight to defend his friends. It wasn't often he got the spotlight you know.
"We couldn't you dolt. How does it feel to know that two girls were able to do what you couldn't?" Hiei stated. True he himself had felt useless but would never admit it.
"What girls?" His question was answered as they approaced and everyone looked their way. "No way, the two pretty girls from the carnival. When did they get here?"
Shizuru released the smoke from her lungs and smiled at the two girls. "Nice job, you two." Kagome blushed while Sango simply nodded her head.
Mrs. Higurashi turned to address Kieko and Yusuke. "Why don't you two come inside and get cleaned up as well. Then we can see about explaining to your parents and dealing with all this." Everyone was stunned at her comment. The woman wasn't the least bit suprised about the demon or the way both girls had reacted to the situation.
"Yes, we will need to clear up this unfortunate mess, I'm afraid." Koenma popped in front of the woman causing her startle. Sango's hand went to her sword out of instinct. "No need for that missy."
"Who the hell are you?" Sango's nerves were still on edge. This guy wasn't a demon or human from the looks of him.
"I am Koenma, ruler of the Spirit World." He knelt down on one knee suprising everyone. "It is finally a pleasure to meet both of you. Lady Sango, Lady Kagome, you both have the respect of all spirit world."
"What the hell is going on. Koenma since when do you bow?" Yusuke wasn't happy at all. He wanted answers damn it. Why had that demon attacked them, who were these two girls, and why did seeing Koenma standing so close to Sango make him want to smash the toddlers face in?
"Silence, I am paying my respects." He rose to his full height, showing off no doubt. "My father and I had always wondered what had happened to the surviving member of the Taijiya. Now, I know. It is good to see that the line hadn't died out as we first believed. I would like to thank you both on your help in defeating Naraku. We had always known about Kagome's destiny so we didn't interfere as she fulfilled it. The only glitch in things centuries ago was you were suppose to stay there Sango. How did you come to end up here anyways?"
"The well closed on me when I brought Kagome home." Hell don't ask her why. She didn't know everything, he was the ruler of the spirit world so he should have the answers.
"Maybe the Well of Time had known something we did not. Either way I have a message for both of you from a very pissed off hanyou and houshi."
They both gasped at that piece of information. Sango was the one to speak, "You've spoken to Miroku and Inuyasha?"
"Of course I have dear. They were brought before me as soon as we learned of Naraku's offspring coming after the former spirit detective. We didn't have any first hand information on what to expect. Which was several days ago, we just didn't expect an attack so soon. I'm sure he will be very put out to learn that you two are still alive."
"Let him be! He will die just like his maker before him." At hearing the name of the hanyou that had taken her love, she was instantly angry.
Koenma's eyebrow twitched. The taijiya was very scary when she looked like that. Cute but scary! "Yes, well considering everything that has happened you two are now involved I'm afraid." The jewel was no longer a problem but this offspring was. He'd stayed in hiding for centuries after the defeat of his maker. "We will need your help in defeating him. He has been gathering a large force in the Makai."
"Fine but we don't take orders from anyone." Sango walked past him into the house. Kagome merely smiled understanding why the girl was upset. It was bad enough they'd defeated the hanyou, now he was once again back in their lives. Maybe not him directly but he'd managed to come back from the dead to haunt them.
"Sorry, we'll be glad to help of course. I'm going to go check up on Sango." She ran into the house leaving everyone staring at her retreating back.
Once both girls were inside Koenma got bombarded with questions. He waved his hands frantically in the air, "Please, slow down. I can't answer you all at once." He looked at the ex-detective about to be rehired, "I'm sorry your wedding was interrupted Yusuke. We trully didn't expect an attack this soon. I was going to speak to you after your honeymoon but things didn't work out that way."
"Right," he replied in that smart ass tone of his. (Which we all love) He knew Koenma would have stopped the attack if he'd known. That wasn't what was bothering him. "Now, tell us how the hell those two girls were suppose to have defeated a demon over five hundred years ago!"
"You don't have to yell. It's quite simply really. Kagome was once the protector of the Shikon Jewel. She used The Well of Time to travel back and forth to the feudal era. Sango was born in that era, so naturally she was already there. A small band of warriors formed together to defeat the worst youkai of all time. Those two were among the group of course. Kagome was suppose to return here where she belonged but somehow Sango ended up here as well. We aren't sure why." Koenma waited for the next question.
"So, she is really a taijiya then." This came from Kurama. He'd heard tales of them as a child. The old race of exterminators had been used in tales to frighten demon children.
"Yes, the last. I think it was obvious by the way she handled herself. She is no mere human I assure you." Koenma had watched the battle from the safety of his desk. Both girls had been a sight to behold, explaining the way both his earlier visitors had behaved. They had demanded to be sent back to protect the women they loved. It wasn't possible ofcourse, neither being up for reincarnation for awhile.
Yusuke couldn't speak, she was from the past. She'd been born centuries ago, lifetimes before. Nothing had prepared him for that answer. "So what do we do now?"
"I will be sending a few of you into the Makai to track down this new threat. We have no idea what he calls himself as of yet. All we know is that he was one of Naraku's last offspring. Over the centuries he's been redesigning his body, a trait inherited by his maker. He is powerful enough to escape our notice for centuries. As I stated before he will be most displeased to find both girls alive and in this time. Those two were the only survivors, I'm afraid. Everyone else died in the final battle against the hanyou. I was able to question two of the group, I'm afraid this will be no easy task."
"One demon won't be hard to kill." This came from Hiei.
"Don't underestimate him." Sango appeared at the door with Kagome by her side. Both had changed into jeans and a fresh shirt. "We made that mistake and look where it landed everyone. You may be a strong youkai, so was Sesshomaru and Kouga. Yet they fell in battle, its was pure luck that we lived. In truth we held no hand in bringing the downfall of Naraku. Inuyasha and Kikyo were the two responsible for his death."
Kagome felt a tear roll down her cheek. Hearing it spoken outloud once more pained her heart. Kikyo and Inuyasha had died together, destroying the man responsible for tearing them apart. Another testament to prove they were meant to be together even in death. Pain that she'd hid for so long crossed her face. It hurt to remember but she had to. Sango had been dealing with her grief daily but Kagome tended to push it back, hiding behind a smile. Only times like this it became too much. She had wanted to stay by his side always. Kagome tried to smile, he was with her still in her heart. "She's right. If he is anything like Naraku, we won't know what to expect."
Sango glared at the boy too old to be sucking on a binky. "The message please."
"Oh, yeah. I almost forgot." He rubbed the back of his head. "Inuyasha said not to get killed. The houshi said only one word, live. I'm sure he was agreeing with the hanyou."
Sango felt her heart lurch at his words. 'Live', it held so many meanings for both girls. Miroku was telling them to live. It was his way of saying to enjoy life, to move on. Find happiness where they could. "Thank you." The man she loved had just given her his blessing to continue her life without him. She wasn't sure if she could but she was going to try. She'd make sure Kagome did the same.
Kagome smiled knowing the meaning of both messages. Imagining Inuyasha speaking those words she felt the love hidden in the message. Obvious, he and Miroku wanted her and Sango to continue living. To have a life, even without them. They would deal with this threat the best they could and they would live on. New hope soared through her. "Sango?"
She merely nodded her head, informing her friend that she'd understood. She turned to Koenma, "When do we leave?"
