Chapter Eleven: A fairy tale of Dark Love
Kagome was turning in her bed. She had gone to rest shortly after Sesshoumaru had Satou and Koumi show her to a different room…had she done something wrong? Why was she being sent from his room? Her mind tried to answer these questions while her youkai was no help at all. Her youkai senses were to intrigued by the scents wafting from the open balconey to her, the sounds of the wild were calling her to them.
Finally she overcame her instincts and fell into a restless sleep. She curled onto her side.
She found herself on the wooden steps of her family’s temple the Goshinboku was in front of her and the sky was blue.
“Kagome are you listening?”
She looked over it was her Ji San but he looked slightly younger. How was that she looked down and her hands were smaller the little hands had short nails and slight smudges of dirt.
“I’ll have you know these stories are very important to us young lady there our history and should be cherished.” He looked at her and then flipped through the old picture less book he held as he carefully turned the pages. “Ah here we…this story is a sad one Kagome not all stories have happy endings.”
“But I like happy stories Ji san.” Came her own child’s voice unaided from her mouth. It was strange to hear her voice in this manner.
“Not all stories can end happy Kagome just as all lives can not be happy…to be honest life is usually between both…sad things are necessary to appreciate the happiness. Do you understand?”
She must have looked at her grandfather confused because he ruffled her hair. “Never mind you’ll understand some day. The story of Hitam-Kasih the feathered serpent.”
And then he read.
“He was the light and the dark the shadow that eclipsed the sun, a child born by virtue & light, conceived by treachery and darkness. His name was chosen from the tongue of his sire whose origins were originated in Sin.”
Her young self was sitting next to her grand father but before the God tree images started to appear with the story. What was going on…was it a dream?
“Along time ago the empress of the southern skies was bored and even though the gods warned her she left the skies and flew down to earth.”
Kagome saw an amazing sight a creature so majestic with the light of the sun and the vibrancy of the rainbow reflected in her wings. Kagome had never seen a phoenix before. She was traveling the skies until she looked down hesitated and then flew below.
“There she met a Lord who bore the mark of a sword on his brow”
The wondrous bird landed to earth becoming a woman of unparalleled beauty when she nearly landed on earth. However Kagome could see the tell tale signs of spider silk that the goddess was landing in catch her delicate ankles and wrap around her while she struggled in fright never encountering such a thing in the skies. The fear of the goddess nearly became a scream when she saw the most horrifying creature approach her in her trapped condition. It eclipsed the sun in her view had eight eyes ebony with two pointing out fangs and eight limbs. Kagome heard the woman’s cries echo with her scream.
As the creature approached her Kagome shuddered when she saw a large fearsome black serpent attack the spider from behind and challenge it. A fight commenced between the older spider youkai and the younger serpent youkai while the frightened phoenix watched wishing she had never left the skies.
The serpent won over the spider delivering the killing strike with venom. The empress screamed preparing to be devoured by the victor. She closed her eyes in terror and when she opened him a male stood before her the goddess while frightened did not think the serpent and the one she thought had saved her from being devoured were the same. The man before Kagome in the vision looked very similar to their guests his skin was white as snow with hunter green stripes, however he was younger about Inu Yasha’s age and had a friendly smile.
“The Empress fell in love with the handsome Lord”
Kagome saw the Empress rebuff the Young youkai who did not have the mark of a Lord and flew back to the clouds terrified of the land.
“However the Lord was warned by the Gods as well for his Love of the Empress would bring an end to his bloodline holding the lands of the south…for earth and sky were never meant to mate.”
Kagome now knew why she didn’t remember this legend the version her grandfather told her had been horribly dry and unbelievably wrong.
The vision Kagome was having was blacked out and she could see the frightened phoenix returning to earth for the sun had been stolen by demons and she needed help. In her vision the phoenix looked for the youkai who had saved her before for he was the only one she knew. The beautiful woman who was the phoenix in disguise pleaded with the youkai who now looked older with the same terrifying presence of there guest that now bore the mark of a Lord on his brow.
The Lord considered her proposal…it would be dangerous to leave his lands for a long time and returning the sun would not be an easy feat. The frightful youkai Lord said he would help her only if she became his mate the phoenix was shocked for she now knew the ugly legless creature that fought the monster was he. The phoenix agreed but would become his mate only after the task was fulfilled.
“The Lord and the Empress were very happy…”
Before Kagome flashed images of a long and exhausting quest in which the Phoenix and the serpent gradually became friends however their differences in opinion were sometimes an issue
“And they never had an unkind word to say to each other.”
The Lord and the Empress argued all the time about the quest. Their anger was hard and soft shouted and silent. Kagome even saw them once or twice revert to their animal forms when in anger and fight
“However something in the Darkness saw their love and became jealous for it had none.”
They finally reached a cave where they had learned the sun was being held. Kagome saw the lord in his serpent form and the phoenix in her real form enter the cave and see thousands of demons huddled around the sun. Kagome saw the Lord prepared to strike until the phoenix that now knew love and had learned compassion looked at the demons and saw they were cold. Kagome saw thousands of shivering youkai male, female, and pups shivering while they waited for their turn to warm themselves by the sun.
The Empress flew into the center of them and sang of what she had learned and the beauty of the land and the sky and how the sun was needed above. The phoenix song broke the underground demons into tears and guilt for what they had done. The Lord of the demons bowed before the Phoenix and returned the sun.
The Phoenix feeling sorry for the frozen youkai broke off a portion of the sun and gave it to the lord. The Empress in her vision showed the lord how a fragment could be broken off and swallowed where it would stay and provide warmth always. The Empress overjoyed by the success of the quest flew to the Youkai Lord (who was now in human form) and kissed him. However Kagome with her miko senses felt a menacing presence watching the two lovers it was furious that the sun had been returned for it wanted it and all lights for itself.
“The darkness wanted the love of the Empress for itself and one night it stole the body of the lord.”
Kagome saw the lord cut himself slightly on a rock as they left. The darkness used the blood to create a weapon that would seal the Lord within himself.
Kagome saw the darkness hiding inside the Lord as he approached the Phoenix and then it turned around and it almost seemed like it was looking through her. It smirked sinisterly as it came towards her. It did see her…but this was just a dream wasn’t it? She put up her hands and saw her power release on the creature without her control.
Kagome woke up twisted in a puddle of silk. What had happened…why was she remembering that old story now. She didn’t remember what happened but she did know it was a tragic story. Maybe Sesshoumaru had a copy of the story in his library?
Kuro Jitsu felt the unnamable darkness reaching out for his location. That creature that spawned him was trying to grasp the Shikon’s power tracing it through shadows and dreams. He reached for the mind of the Inu Demoness tracing it gently to slip in undetected. He found her in an ageless forest that was unnaturally silent.
It was there the darkness that would never let him go and it recognized the power of the Shikon-no-tama within the Inu Miko. The creature had taken his fathers form again he despised it more then ever and his anger made the forest itself tense. The creature was focused on his best friends daughter that just would not do. Kuro Jitsu cleared his mind and used slight control to have the miko raise her hands in defense. Even he was not counting on the force of purifying energy that came from the miko unconsciously. It was a large like a tidal wave of energy that tickled as well as it could drown. That power forced him and the darkness out of the miko’s dream.
The darkness hissed its energy drastically depleted almost critically. It needed a physical form now it couldn’t remain non corporeal…who knew that little bitch was so powerful. Well he wouldn’t underestimate her again no he would have to tread around her carefully strike her in a way she wouldn’t expect. The dark shadow turned inside of itself becoming a physical object. A small round pink sphere fell on the ground underneath a tree that contained a sleeping hanyou.
