Ch 11 - Healing
(This is a bit shorter than what I had meant to put up this time, but, I dunno, just seemed like the right place to stop.)
Chapter Eleven – Healing
Kagome spent the rest of the night in Inuyasha’s arms crying while Shippo nuzzled more into her hair, whimpering. He knew from eavesdropping on Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru that this was what she needed, but he hated seeing her so hurt. Finally, around dawn, she fell into a deep sleep, still cradled in Inuyasha’s arms.
Sesshoumaru himself made a brief appearance to ask of her well-being. He was satisfied to find Inuyasha cradling her in his arms and laying down with her. He had nearly had to pry Shippo from her shoulders though, and he frowned thoughtfully, wondering why the kit was so attached to her. Rin and Shippo both accompanied him to breakfast, and as soon as they finished he sent them into the village with Jaken.
He sat quietly staring out the window for a long time. He was very aware of the long road that both his brother and Kagome had ahead of them. And it was his duty to push them down that road as soon as possible now. As much as it didn’t make a singit oit of sense, Kagome had been right. Somehow her uncle was Naraku, and now he was after her blood.
Around midday a rumpled looking Inuyasha and a red-eyed Kagome appeared in the study. Inuyasha took the seat across from the fireplace, and instead of taking the seat next to it; Kagome plopped down at his feet, resting her back and head against his legs. They both watched Sesshoumaru for a few minutes before he finally broke the silence.
“You wish to know what I found at the fire?” Kagome nodded, not sure if her voice would work or not. Sesshoumaru dropped unceremoniously into the opposite chair. “You were right, Kagome, and I apologize for doubting you. Somehow your uncle is Naraku, and either the story of how he gained his power is false, or there’s more to it, and I’m not sure that’s something we want to think about yet.”
“What changed your mind?”
“I stayed long after the flames had been extinguished. I knew that Inuyasha would be busy trying to consol you, and that he would not wish to leave your side, so I stayed and investigated. Either the fire destroyed the protection spells, or someone took them down on their own. Naraku’s odor over rode everything except for the smoke and fire.” He seemed to hesitate, and mentally he cursed growing soft and caring for others feelings. “There was a message, Kagome.”
She seemed to pale and Inuyasha dropped his hands bracingly on her shoulders, squeezing to let her know he was still there. “What do you mean, a message?”
“In the kitchen. There was a message written for you. ‘You’re next niece.’”
Instead of jumping up or losing her cool, as Inuyasha had expected after their last conversation, Kagome twisted around, burying her face in Inuyasha’s robes. He could feel the shudders of desperation and fear that ran up and down her body.
Sesshoumaru now turned his attention to Inuyasha, and for a moment sadness was very evident in his eyes. “I hate to do this now, Inuyasha, but you must take her to mate, soon. It is the only way possible for her to have your full protection.” Kagome’s body went stiff. “Kagome, I know it is a lot to ask of you so soon after all you have been through, but it is a necessary action. It is the only way we can keep you safe.”
Kagome’s eyes darkened slightly. “Why bother? He will find me eventually. And then he’ll finish me. I have lost everything and evee the that loved me because of him. Because of me. Dad, Grandpa, Mom, Souta - they would all still be alive if I hadn’t been around.”
The room was filled by three different sets of growling at those words, and one highly indignant voice. It seemed that while they had been conversing Jaken had arrived back with the children. Kagome’s arms were quickly full of a small orange ball of fluff.
“Don’t say such things Kagome! Please, I love you like my mother! I don’t want to lose you too. Please, Kagome, I’ll be your family but please don’t give up.”
Kagome blinked in shock. “He’s right you know.” Sesshoumaru had remained where he was, Rin now firmly placed in his lap. “You might have lost one family, but you still have those who care for and love you, Kagome Higurashi. You have a kit who has claimed you for a mother after losing his, a girl who clings to you for an aunt when she’s surrounded by men,” Rin giggled, “and a baka hanyou who is so head over heels for you that you even make him think straight.”
Rin saw the tiny smile on Kagome’s face and then piped up. “But you forgot the most important part, Sesshoumaru-sama! The ice-cold taiyoukai who melted and claimed her as a surrogate sister. After all, all Fluffy-sama’s need a little sister!” And at this even Kagome laughed a little.
