Knowing it would not be long for his would be assailant to make their move, Bankotsu glanced out into the water as he waited; giving the illusion that he was an easy target. It was not long before he heard the unmistakable sound of dirt crunching under someone's boots and turned to the side just in time to miss the knife that had been aimed at his back.
Keeping himself on defense, wanting to know why the guy was trying to kill him, Bankotsu carefully evaded his frenzied attempts to slash him. "Why are you trying to kill me?" he demanded in between strikes as they danced around on the lake shore. For awhile he remained mute and Bankotsu began to wonder if he had any intention of actually telling him.
Just when he was about to ask him again, he finally spit out his answer; diving toward him at the same time as he attempted to stab him in his gut. "Did you think you would go unpunished after murdering Magatsuhi?!" he shouted, not missing a beat when Bankotsu parried the attack that went with it. Before he could even remember who he was referring to, the man before him lunged once more.
Realizing that knowing the answer brought neither of them any comfort, Bankotsu shook his head before sidestepping another attack. "That was five years ago and I did not murder anyone," Bankotsu insisted though it only seemed to fuel his hatred for him as he became more aggressive in his attacks. "I defeated that man in self-defense!"
His belief that he had done nothing wrong was apparently not shared by the man in front of him as he suddenly screamed and rushed toward him; knocking them both to the ground where they were soon fighting over the only weapon to be drawn. A few punches, along with a cowardly thrown handful of sand, later and Bankotsu had lost the fight for the knife.
As he stood up, trying desperately to wipe the sand from his eyes, Bankotsu soon realized he had been blind long enough to lose the battle completely when he felt a sharp pain in his side.
