Chapter 10


The venom in his tone would have been enough to turn her blood to ice water if he had been speaking to her. But as he was speaking for her she felt her heart leap in sudden relief as he froze inches away from her and she ducked under the arm still pinning her to the wall. As she rushed to Sesshomaru's side, she had never been so happy to see him in her life.

He glanced her over and subtly sniffed her. Satisfied that she had come to no harm and that he'd only touched her once, he turned his menacing blazing gold eyes on the priest. Before the man could form a single word Sesshomaru's claws were wrapped around his throat. “This shall be the last time you shall ever lay eyes on this world.” Sesshomaru informed him coldly as his claws began to dig in to the man's throat...

He hesitated. There was no question that this man in his claws should die but still he hesitated. He was not a being of mercy. No, that was her department. And yet he found himself repulsed by the idea of brutally slaughtering the man before her eyes. He had seen her kill demons but she was not a killer. He knew that she knew he lived up to his name but for some reason he could not fathom he did not want her to see. Had he been able he would have sent her to the rooms and away from the horrors he wanted to inflict on the disgusting human male who had the audacity to touch... what was his. His sudden possessiveness of the girl gave him pause and he growled long low and fiercely. That was utter foolishness. The girl was not his nor did he want her.

With a flick of his wrist he tossed the frightened man to the floor. “I condemn you to life.” he stated before turning away from the whimpering fool. Movement caught his eye and he turned his back to the priest. Kagome was climbing up the massive statue to reach for...


White hot pain arched through his back as a knife was driven below his right shoulder blade and then swiftly with drawn. As his blood began to drip to the floor the priest began to chant. Kagome began slip, a pained scream ripped from her lips. In her small hands she clutched a round smooth lustrous pearl. With more speed than he'd used before, he vanished for an instant and caught the girl as she was falling. He felt the wetness of her blood soaking her back from the wound inflicted on him. His wound was already closing and he could smell the blood beginning to lessen on her as well though much slower than he would have liked.

He was beyond furious. And his beast roared for retribution on the human who had injured the woman under his protection and attacked his person. The thick sweet smell of her blood made his boil as it had time and again while he had been following her and Inuyasha's pack. Back then he'd gone and slaughtered several lowlife youkai to rid himself of the fury if he could not kill the beast who inflicted the damage himself, but here... He turned his cold eyes to the human who was still chanting over his blood.

The ground began to rumble as the priest continued to chant. Kagome's eyes shot wide. “Stop him! What ever he's doing it's causing an earth quake!” Sesshomaru sniffed, the smell of sulfur was growing stronger. The tremors shook the ground and the pillars began to sway. His beast growled in annoyance at the inability to relish the mans blood on his claws but the building would not stand much longer.

Without a glance back Sesshomaru ran from the room with Kagome clutched under his arm. He raced back to the room and snatched up her bag containing the scrolls and shoved the bag into her arms. “The fool woke a fire demon sleeping in the mountain.” he growled. Kagome blinked “We have to get off the island!” she said as she struggled not to cry. Melting into his energy form he flashed through the halls and out of the collapsing temple. Once out side he shot straight up in to the sky as high as he dare. Once they were above the ash cloud that had filled the sky he let his energy form his youki cloud instead.

Kagome looked down at the small island in shock and horror. The beautiful land was burning. Even from as high as they were she could hear the screams of the Atlantians who were dying. Kagome wept as she watched unable to do anything to stop the horror unfolding beneath them. Her tears fell on the pearl and she sighed. “Sesshomaru, look. It's the pearl, I found it.” she said as she shifted to look up at him.

He set her on her feet and pulled her to stand closer to where he stood. After she slung the bag on her shoulder she turned gripping his arm to steady herself she placed the pearl in to his hand. No sooner had both their hands touched the pearl than light erupted around them and a vortex formed in the center. Without looking back Sesshomaru stepped through with the girl still clutching his arm.
