Avoiding Embarrassment
A/N All righty, here's a little more for ya'll, two in a row as a 'happy weekend' present. :-) Thanks again for the reviews - it's far too fun to torment Miroku, isn't it? ;-)

Chapter 10 - Avoiding Embarrassment
“S-so, Inuyasha, how are you feeling?” Miroku swallowed as Inuyasha continued growling, tracking him as he tried to move along the stalls. Other merchants had taken note of his behavior and already fled. If Miroku were lucky, they would simply stay away. He didn’t want to have to deal with any well-intentioned aid harming Inuyasha.
He didn’t want Inuyasha hurting him, either, but he’d rather the latter than the former. At least his own injuries wouldn’t be fatal, only humiliating and a little disturbing to his own peace of mind.
He made steady progress down the street, Inuyasha following every slow step. The hanyou made no aggressive moves, Miroku noticed. He was fierce, obviously unhappy with Miroku for some reason, but he wasn’t attempting to attack him.
Or molest him.
Or take him screaming and fighting and…screaming again for a totally different reason. He was following, that was all. Yet Miroku could hardly find it reassuring. In fact, he felt like a member of a flock, watching a wolf at the edge of the woods. It might not be attempting anything yet, but all the sheep knew that it would. As soon as you took your eye from it - as soon as you grew complacent - that wolf was going to come and take you in the ass.
Miroku was jittery with tension by the time his hand felt the edge of the last stall. He braced himself.
“Inuyasha, can you calm down? You’re safe. There’s no trouble. We’re not in danger. You can relax.” Red eyes stared at him, uncomprehending, and he gulped. Time for the second part of the plan: run very, very, very fast.
He turned, took three steps, heard Inuyasha’s growl rise to a snarl behind, took one more step, and slammed into someone as he tried to look back to see where Inuyasha was. His bag dropped from his grip.
He would have shoved the person aside if strong hands hadn’t grabbed at his shoulders to steady him. A quick look up into a strong, kind face was all he got.
“Well…He-llo. Aren’t you the pretty thing. Especially for a monk,” the man smiled down at him. His hands didn’t shift as Miroku attempted to remove them with a jerk.
“Let go! You don’t know what you’re-“ There was a roar behind him and then Miroku was yanked back by the neck of his robes and a clawed hand sent the other man flying into the nearest stall.
Miroku struggled, trying to pull free so he could at least avoid the humiliation of being stripped or worse, in front of everyone. Claws dug into his shoulders through his osode. Wincing, he froze as he felt Inuyasha’s teeth against the back of his neck. They didn’t quite pierce the skin, but the warning couldn’t be plainer. Miroku let his body sag, still hoping he might be able to catch Inuyasha off guard and get away for just long enough to hide from the other humans. Seeing everyone around them staring, he flushed hotly even while he still tried to plan.
When a loud voice called out for them to stop – more precisely for the ‘demon’ to stop – Inuyasha’s teeth moved from his skin. He snarled at them, his grip pulling Miroku close as he confronted the small mob of farm-tool laden citizens. There was a pause, where Miroku prayed that Inuyasha wouldn’t tear them all apart. And then he was yelling as Inuyasha tightened his grip even more, lifted him off the ground by the waist, and sprinted away from the townsmen in huge bounds.
It took only a few moments before they were in the fields, a few more and they were in the woods, and Inuyasha continued for some minutes until they were completely surrounded by silent forest. He let Miroku drop to the ground with a thump and stood over him, growling again.
“All right, Inuyasha,” Miroku said wearily. “We’re away from the town, so what now?” His eyes rose to Inuyasha’s groin and noticed a large bulge.
“Oh. I see.”
Maybe he should have encouraged him to eat the villagers after all.
