What is to come
Rin was floored she couldn’t believe it. Her thoughts were in a haze, he gave a fang in order have a sword produced, especially for her. She had so many questions, but all that she managed to get out was,
“Why?”
“ Like I explained when I gave it to you, because I won’t always be around… so I wanted a part of me to be with you to protect you.”
In Rin’s mind, she thought that the silence back on the field 2 years earlier was because he didn’t know how to express these kinds of feelings. The entire gesture was more than enough, to placate her and any doubts she had about the sincerity of Sesshomaru’s love for her. The whole thing thrilled Rin to no ends. She was happy and honored to have received such a gift, a type of gift that is only reserved for kin and to preserve legacies. It was so humbling and she was now more than determined to get it back. But along with the new-founded determination, Rin’s utter disbelief still got the better of her and she began to cry with gratitude. Sesshomaru watched all her emotions play out in her eyes and notices that she was about to cry and was puzzled, but he grabbed her and tried to comfort her.
“Why does Rin cry?” Her emotions were haywire, and she wanted to explain all that was on her mind to her love, but her mind was so frazzled that all she managed to say was,
“Does Jakken know?” In between sobs and trying to catch her breath. The comment took Sesshomaru aback, but he quickly realized that her nonsensical questions came from the sheer shock and by the look on her face that was not what she wanted to say, but he decided to humor her.
“No, I never felt it necessary nor important for him to know how I came to posses said sword, or why I gave it to you. But he never questions my choices, unlike you.” He said teasingly. Rin tried to compose her shock she wanted to show her gratitude and appreciation. But was no words that she could come up with could ever convey how she felt and again all she could say was yet another unimportant question.
“Can I have it back?”
With that Sesshomaru started to let out his out of character booming laughter. Rin, who was lying at his side started to rock with his body’s pace of laughter. She wasn’t expecting that kind of reaction. She figured maybe if she asked that he would give it back. In her life she never came out and asked for things from Sesshomaru. She would usually beg or plead with her lord for things. As her thoughts came back to her current situation, she became annoyed with Sesshomaru’s laughter, which was lasting longer than she liked. Sesshomaru, who was unaccustomed to such an emotion outburst, that he forgot to breath, and that was what finally put an end to his obnoxious laughing. He then took a hold of both of Rin’s hands and stared deep into her eyes, the longing stare of gold on brown focused all of Rin’s attention to the magnificent man standing before her.
“You will have no need to keep this sword, for I will never leave you. When I had this sword made, I had expected to let you leave my side. Thus leaving you without my protection. But now, you are mine and by that virtue I will never leave you without my protection. Which makes this sword useless.”
Rin heard his words and it made her sad that her beautiful, meaningful gift from her love was so easily dismissed. “Sesshomaru,” she reached for his side where the sword sat gracefully and unsheathed said sword. She then presented it to Sesshomaru. Before Sesshomaru took it from Rin she spoke “ This sword is far from meaningless to me. It’s a part of you and was given to me as a gift that you gave to me. It’s the single most meaningful thing that I have ever held in my possession and holds more value than you could ever imagine.” She placed the sword in her lord’s hands, and moved her now free hands to the markings on his face. She traced the long colored marks off his cheekbones and then moved her wandering to his lips and traced them before kissing his lips tenderly. She wanted her kiss to show all her gratitude, love and joy she could muster in a single gesture. Sesshomaru placed the sword back in its sheath, then took his clawed fingers and ran them through Rin’s dark tresses. Sesshomaru not being a impetuous being by nature, but at that moment wanted nothing more for the morning to come quick, so that their journey would be swift. But for how much he wanted to mate her at that moment, but his logical mind realized that she would need her rest, to make all that he had planned a work smoothly. He removed the swords from his hip and laid them down upon the mat, inviting Rin to lie down beside him in his arms as the two fell into the gentle embrace of rest.
Jakken had entered Lord Sesshomaru’s castle with a “laundry list” of tasks to ready the household for his and Rin’s arrival. Among one of the first major things was for him to contact a long time family friend. Trinity was a caregiver for Sesshomaru as a pup and a confidant to his father. She was a member of the Great Dog Demon’s pack and was entrusted to care for his son. In the years she helped rear Sesshomaru, the two became close. Even though, Sesshomaru had always kept him self distant and cold to everyone, she was like another mother to him and felt more willing to let his guard down in her presence. Sesshomaru decided that he would invite his friend to come and care for Rin, his mate. She would need a lady in waiting and there was no one else that he could trust with the single most important thing in his life than her. He also figured that Rin would need someone to help her adjust to her role as the Lady of the Western Lands.
So Jakken sent word to her village, as per Sesshomaru’s instruction. Among the invitation to the castle was a personal letter address to Trinity from Sesshomaru, it read.
Dearest Trinity,
I am writing to you to inform you of some rather large changes in this Sesshomaru’s life. I first would like to personally invite you to come back to the Western Land Castle. I would find this to be a great debt of gratitude if you came. Your journey will be safe seeing as the major threat to the land has been vanquished. Thus with that I am able to return to my castle and tend to my land in the way that it truly deserves. So upon your arrival we will have a private council and I fill you in on the goings on of the land since your departure from the castle after my father’s death. But back to the matter at hand, I would expect that you have remembered our conversations about my taking a mate, and my utter distain at the notion. Well I am informing you that I have in fact decided to mate. She has been a member of my pack for many years and I have grown to trust her and she has managed to get me throw my old feelings about mates aside. She is smart and I expect that you will take the uttermost care of her and train her in the ways of being a Lady to this Lord. There is something else that I must mention about my future mate, the reason that have not mated her at present, is because she is human. I will explain all upon your arrival. Hopefully you have swept the floor that now supports your fallen jaw and am looking forward to your arrival by weeks end.
Your Friend
Lord Sesshomaru
Once Jakken delivered the letter to Trinity’s home and received confirmation. He went ahead with the rest of his chores. His list contained: Preparing rooms for himself, Rin and Trinity. He conference with some of Sesshomaru’s associates and planned a welcome home event for Lord Sesshomaru and a introduction for Rin to the people. A task that was harder than Jakken had anticipated. Apparently Sesshomaru had never really done a formal conference to his people. So Sesshomaru’s counterparts weren’t entirely sure how to go about it. They all agreed delivering a mass letter to the people would be the best. It was announced that the lord was returning home and was inviting them to his mate/ wife for those humans that inhabited the lands. They also stressed the necessity to have as many on lookers at the castle gates upon their arrival and the importance of their lord’s return.
Jakken was nervous about what might Lord Sesshomaru imagined when he sent him to do this task. He had wanted a large crowd awaiting Rin and Sesshomaru, but did his lord? Jakken again questioned the thought that maybe Sesshomaru wouldn’t want to personally address his people. Sesshomaru didn’t seem like the type to conduct public speeches, but there was no turning back now. All that matter now was that the inhabitants of the Western Land would want to see their lord and his lady and come and wish them well in the masses. Jakken’s image of the wide spread land between the castle gates and beyond filled with the masses of cheering on lookers Rin entering the castle in complete awe and amazement, which was what Lord Sesshomaru had made the point to Jakken when he asked him to go and ready his estate.
After Jakken sent out the notices to the villages, he went to attend to the other matters on his list of chores. The list still contained some minor housekeeping and secretary type chores. He was quite distracted by all the information that was being given to him, seeing as Sesshomaru over the last few years rarely came to the mansion. With Jakken present all his subjects, decided to bombard him with all types of household and land issues. But he knew nothing of how his lord would conduct his affairs, so he tried his best but left the more important issues for Sesshomaru to deal with once he was able to attend to such affairs. He was then pulled away from the study that he was working in, by one of the servants saying that there were some deliveries at the castle gates for Lord Sesshomaru. Jakken waited in the entryway to see what had been delivered. What he came upon was tons of baskets of food offerings, crafts and flowers in honor of the Western Lord’s impending mating. Jakken was completely overwhelmed with the support that his lord was receiving from village leaders and pack leaders that inhabited the western lands. Jakken got a leg up on sorting and dividing the gifts so that there would be order to sending thank you letters to when all of this was said and done. He was in quite a groove when, he was again summoned away from his task by a servant saying that a visitor was approaching the castle. Jakken figured quickly that the visitor had to be Trinity. He was apprehensive to her arrival. He expected her to be no doubtable a demon and intimidating like his lord and possibly violent seeing as she was a friend of Lord Sesshomaru. But he had to satisfy his curiosity as to what she looked like, since she was of so much importance to his lord.
Jakken went yet again to the entryway of the castle and waited for the door to open. There was a tapping on the door. The servant came to the door and opened it. The sunlight came through first, slightly blinding him, when his vision came back to him he saw her silhouette. She was tall maybe a few inches shorter than Sesshomaru. Once she walked into the castle he got a better look. She was a grayish blue dog demoness, with green eyes that pierced right through him and instantly made him look away in respect. Her strong features came through next when he finally got the nerve to look at her again. She had no markings on her face like Sesshomaru, her seemed to flow down her body. He saw some of them around her neck and at her wrists or at least that what he could tell seeing as she was wearing a long traveling coat that matched the color of her hair. Nervously Jakken approached Trinity, unsure of how she would treat a newcomer. If she was anything like Sesshomaru, he wanted to be able to escape if he happened to say something out of line. When he found the nerve, he spoke.
“Hello Lady Trinity.” He said timidly “I am Jakken, companion of Lord Sesshomaru. I was instructed to ready a room for your arrival.”
Trinity looked at the funny looking imp and was puzzled that Sesshomaru would associate with anyone let alone some small frail imp. He did look quite jumpy. She also realized that he probably doesn’t know anything about her demeanor. So she thought that she would have some fun with him. She was usually a very friendly and a very approachable demon, quite the opposite of Sesshomaru. But she did have her mischievous side come out. She thought that she would be bored arriving at the castle before Sesshomaru, but now she found something that would keep her occupied until he made his presence known and she get around to asking him about this whole mating thing, the reason she agreed to come here, she was so very curious about this human that had defrosted Sesshomaru’s heart and change his terrible opinion of humans.
“Is Sesshomaru here?!” She asked with authority in her voice. She had to bite back her laughed as she heard her echo in the entryway. She knew that he wasn’t here but, she wanted to throw her weight around along with picking on the imp. Jakken jumped nervously at her voice.
“Ummm…well….he’s…” Jakken stammered trying to composed himself
“Well? Out with it!” Still imitating Lord Sesshomaru tone and inside trying not laugh. Jakken was showing and smelling of absolute fear, which contributed to her overwhelming need to fall on the floor in heap of laughter.
After gaining some control over himself. “He and Rin haven’t arrived yet.” He swallowed hard and tried to breath. “They should be here no later than tomorrow evening.” Hoping that his answered didn’t angry the tall gray dog demon.
Trinity decided that she better find out where her room was before the little imp fled in fear which is what she could surmises by his fidgeting. “Well then you better take me to this room that you have for me, or do you wish for me to wander the halls of this castle like a prowler.” She said curtly.
Poor Jakken was getting quite an impression on how dog demons interact. He had only encountered 3 in his life, Lord Sesshomaru, Inu Yasha, Sesshomaru’s miscreant half brother and now Trinity. So for what he could figure they were short tempered, very aggressive and frightening. He had concluded that this species was a cruel bunch domineering and violent. He couldn’t understand how they managed to reproduce and maintain their status as the most revered demons in the land. Jakken lead Trinity toward her sleeping quarters. He lead her through the wing that was adjacent to Sesshomaru’s quarters. Which was on purpose so that she could be near the human if need be. The room that she was lead into was spacious and was well light and decorated in white. It had its own bathing room within the room. It had lots of potential, but still needed a woman’s touch Trinity thought. Jakken informed her that she was to be caring for Rin and that was her purpose here, as instructed by Sesshomaru he took her to Rin’s quarters. Rin’s room was covered in linens that bared the family crests and nobility symbols. But there were some small touches that made the room look like it was put together with the uttermost care. Flowers were arranged around the room and the bed was covered in silk that could have only been from the family own special collection. Jakken then lead her back to her room.
“Lady Trinity are you hungry? If so I can have the staff make up whatever you desire.”
Trinity thought for a moment, she hadn’t eaten since she left this morning. But she still wanted to mess with the imp. So she figured she would find the kitchen and talk to the staff herself without Jakken hovering over so she could be herself. “What I desire is imp, over an open flame.” She said with a throaty chuckle and the color fading quickly from Jakken’s face. Jakken had had enough and fled. Trinity closed her the door and fell on the floor and laughed until she cried. She couldn’t wait until Sesshomaru came so she have him help in messing with the imp. She figured that was the reason that he kept him around was to keep himself amused by his jumpy demeanor.
The sun started to rise and filled the small temple bedroom, Sesshomaru awoke and cursed the sun for disturbing his slumber. But then realized that his wait would soon be over. He instantly became anxious and wanted to leave, until he felt Rin stir lightly in his arms. All his attention went to the slumbering beauty that rest in his embrace, the one that had capture the heart he thought he didn’t posses. He thought about all the new feelings that this little fragile human solicited from him and was impressed that she was able to make him feel like, well to just to feel. He wanted to impress her, he knew that anything he did would be impressive to her, but he really wanted to show her just how much he cared for her and his gratitude for allowing him to know what it feels to love and to be loved. Something that he thought was a waste of time. Sesshomaru was lost in his thoughts, when Rin looked up an saw her one and only holding her and looking at her with so much devotion that she hated to break him out of his thoughts but she felt the need to get their journey started.
“Good morning, my lord.” Rin said stretching and yawning. Gracefully lifting herself out of her loves arms. Sesshomaru instantly snapped out of his thoughts at the sound of her sweet voice that swam through his ears. He looked down at her and kissed her, it was to be a sweet small kiss, but Sesshomaru found himself in need to revisit the events from the night before. But thought better to curb his actions. If he wanted be at his home before nightfall then they needed to be getting along soon.
“Morning, Rin. I trust that you had plenty of rest. We need to leave soon and you’ll need all your strength for the trip.” Rubbing the last bit of sleep from her eyes and smiled at the thought of traveling with her lord, and was excited as to what was to come when they arrived at his castle.
“Why?”
“ Like I explained when I gave it to you, because I won’t always be around… so I wanted a part of me to be with you to protect you.”
In Rin’s mind, she thought that the silence back on the field 2 years earlier was because he didn’t know how to express these kinds of feelings.
