Chapter 9, Part 1: Enter Shippo… Plus the Thunder Brothers and more Jewel Shards

“3, 2, 1 and there you have it. Your noodles are ready” I ignored the call by Kagome as I stared out across the blackened ground my fist clenched so hard that indents were felt in my palm though nothing showed on my face. “Not bad, not bad, I can see how this could catch on.” I felt my teeth grit as I looked down and shut my eyes not wanting to see what was around me. “Next best thing to sliced bread.”

I took a deep breath and felt myself becoming ill with the scent of food I a place like this. “Hey Shade aren’t you going to dig in?” My eyes flew open and I turned my head round to Inuyasha, but when I saw he had noodles hanging from his mouth plus the scent, my ears went straight back and I swung round and stumbled away the sick feeling having returned I then waved a hand back “No thanks Inuyasha.” I swallowed and shook my head as I licked my lips and grimaced closing my eyes again as I crossed my arms “I’m not hungry.”

I opened my eyes and shivered in a full body shiver ‘this place will give me nightmares’ “Come on Kagome, aren’t you gonna dig in?” I sighed while Kagome sounded really pissed off at Inuyasha. “Uhhh! Speaking of digging! Have you noticed we’re surrounded by corpses here?!” I snorted and turned around to watch the two of them with an eyebrow raised “No I guess you were too busy rummaging around in my backpack to realise we are sitting in an old battlefield!” I shivered and narrowed my eyes ‘she didn’t have to put it like that! Ohh I hate skeletons’ “I’m hungry he says, then he has the nerve to expect us to eat here!” I growled my hackles rising as I cast my senses about for what had caused me unrest, Inuyasha not noticing as he blinked at Kagome while she screeched at him (with dog demon hearing its worse).

“Geeze! Even your blood sucking flea buddy has manners.” I shook my head as I uncrossed my arms and took a step back, I was probably being too paranoid buts that’s how I felt since I had got here. “finally I have found someone who has good taste and tastes good” I went over by Inuyasha and squatted down with one hand on the ground to balance me as I still cast my senses wide my ears twitching in every direction. I ignored what they were saying my eyebrows drawing in as I tensed; I did not like this place. The battlefield had put me on edge and with all the birds that had gone quiet I was jumpy to every little thing.

I looked at Inuyasha to see if he had noticed and instantly felt queasy at seeing him talk with his mouthful, it was not that he stuffed his face or talked with his mouth full of noodles, it was being in a place of death that put off my appetite that would only return when we were as far from this place as possible. I looked at Kagome and heard her talking about space travel and rockets and shook my head, I had come from a similar time and was never so enthusiastic about it all, I had before someone to look after and it kept my mind off things.

I looked away from them both ‘I fact I wander how my old mother is doing. She was not really able to do much with her mind switching from her normal mind to her childhood mind’ I sighed and looked down at my hands holding back tears ‘will I ever see her again “Shade? Are you ok?” I lifted my head and turned to her, I was about to answer when the sky grew dark. I was instantly on my feet as was Inuyasha who through away his empty noodle pot and put a hand on his sword “What’s going on? Why did it get dark so quickly?” Kagome looked nervous at the dark clouds that had suddenly appeared. “I don’t know but I have had a bad feeling all day since we got here and it usually means trouble.” I heard Inuyasha snort next to me “Well why didn’t you say so!”

I growled at him when a spiral of light appeared above us, I instantly lost my growl and looked up at it in surprise. “You down there! You possess a piece of the sacred Shikon Jewel.” I moved next to Kagome, my ears perked in interest as I tilted my head like an inquisitive puppy with a new toy my ears straight up, my eyes wide, my mouth open in shock “What’s it to you!?” I furrowed my brow again as I clicked my jaw shut, sniffed and smelled an unusual scent on the air though it seemed young “Demon” I tilted my head ‘scent of Kitsune/Fox?’ “I believe it is a fox.” I sniffed again and then glanced back at Inuyasha and Myoga “most likely to be a young one even a kit!” Inuysha just ignored me “Not bloody likely!”

I huffed and turned away and blinked as the light popped in to a balloon with a face on it? I blinked, then blinked and giggled a smile on my face as I saw Inuyasha’s dumbfounded look “Hand over the jewel” My ears twitched as I held my giggles inside as the cute balloon hovered in front of us and floated on top of Inuyasha’s hair. “the jewel or your life.” I then stepped back when Inuyasha slapped away the balloon in anger a vein pulsing, my eyes were wide as I moved past him and over to where the balloon had popped, in to a kitsune child ‘Cute!’, we all went over to where the kid was “told you it was a kit.” Then a fist came down on my head, I snarled while holding my head and brought a hand across Inuyasha’s face. “Don’t hit me again” my voice was lethal as I moved to the other side of Kagome, growling at Inuyasha and the red handprint on his face, who looked a bit disgruntled (Imagine that! lol).

“who dares to burst my bubble!” Then I blinked as Inuyasha reached for the kit and grabbed his tail as he tried to flee. He dangled the kit in front of his face “feisty little thing aren’t ya. Nice tail, looks like a badger or a squirrel.” I sighed and moved over to him to grab the kit if he decided to hit him. “Inuyasha, it’s a fox demon barely out of kit stage, leave him alone.” I then stopped next to Inuyasha and gave him the evil eye as he glared back at me. “A fox? It talks? Cool!” we then both turned to look at her as she came up behind Inuyasha “Let me touch him when you’re done.” I blinked at her and then shook my head as I turned my attention back to the ‘Cute’ kit that was hanging in Inuyasha’s fist by his tail.

Then down Inuyasha went, I blinked at the statue that had appeared and then looked across the ground to Kagome’s pack that the kit was throwing items from it in every direction. “Hey get out of my stuff!” Then up he came with the jewel shards in a glass jar “found it the sacred jewel shard” I narrowed my eyes as he jumped up in to the air “Our time together has been short but sweet, farewell!” Then he vanished in a swirl of light and a pop, while Inuyasha and Kagome were fooled by the illusion I was not, too many times had such things been played in the life I had before (from the memories) and I instantly tracked him as a skull and jumped over there.

I landed before the skull and put out a foot, he ran right in to it and bounced off, then came Inuyasha with his fist meeting the kits head while my head dropped in to my hand as I groaned at his actions. I squatted next to the kit and glared at Inuyasha daring him to hit the kit again as the kit sulked “always pick on the little guy.” I looked down at him breaking my glaring contest with Inuyasha “well if you told us the reason why you need the shard instead of stealing them we might get somewhere.”

The kit was looking away from us all as Kagome sprayed some anaesthetic on the sore part of his head “It’s for my father.” My ears moved in his direction as one eyebrow drew down in a questioning gaze as we all looked at him “I need to get the shards of the jewel to avenge him.” Kagome leaned back her expression surprised and a bit worried “What do you mean avenge? You don’t mean your father was killed do you?” I snorted and gave Kagome an are-you-a stupid-bitch face “What the hell do you think it means Kagome? Or are you so idiotic that you cannot even process it?” She growled and she gave me a sharp look “Well excuse me! I was only asking!”

I just shook my head as I leaned back on my arms and glanced out at Inuyasha’s and surprisingly the kits amused faces “most people would not have to evaluate it out loud.” I then turned my face away from Kagome’s enraged huff and looked at the kit my eyebrows furrowing in to a thoughtful look “I can’t understand why you would need the jewel shards though unless you need extra strength.” Inuyasha had a sceptic look on his face as he held up the bottle with the shard in it “oh so I get it, he’s not strong enough so he needs the power of the jewel to take out his enemies.”

An angry look came across my face as I shut my eyes “where does that leave me Inuyasha? I am weak so does that mean I want the jewel as well!” I crossed my arms and clenched my teeth as a growl not quite there sounded in the back of my throat. “Feh! You’re useful in your own way! So don’t get any ideas!” My eyes blinked open and I looked wonderingly at him, this was one of the few times he had said he needed me and it went deep inside me, though I had no idea how this was going to effect me in the future, I was going to find out sooner than what I would have liked at what the higher powers had in store for me.

I looked back over at the kit as Kagome mad as ever went over to Inuyasha because of the Jewel shard bottle he had in his hand and turned my attention to the kit “Excuse me, mind telling me how the jewel got in to your hands?” I sighed I tried to ignore them as I pricked my ears forward “I’m strong enough to take on any enemy” The kit looked annoyed “I was protecting it for you! You got a problem with that?” and I began to grit my teeth in exasperation I’m one of those that choose precaution” the kit looked like he was getting more and more annoyed “Inuyasha give it!” by now my eyebrows had furrowed as I let a sigh out from between my clenched jaws that sounded more like a woof “Let go its safer with me” then the kit exploded “Hey! I’m the one doing the talking here!”

I sprung through the trees just before Inuyasha, keeping up with him easily (My speed has grown as time has gone by) as one of my ears was centred on the kit while the other ear and my senses were scanning for enemies near by. “It all started not to long ago. Hundreds of warriors were engaged in a battle near the forest were we lived. But a dark cloud passed overhead, a cloud so dark and evil! None could imagine what horrors it could bring, the warriors were at first puzzled by the strange turn in the weather. The solders pointed up at the sky at the strange lighting bolts that seemed to centre in on one area.

Then with a strike of lightning two figures appeared flying through the sky towards the battle. Then the human (Eldest brother) looking of the two brought down his staff with a strange metal bit on the front and lighting blew up a lot of the (red) solders on one of the sides, then he sent down his staff to the ground where it stuck upright. Then with a flare of lightning blew up the rest of the men in that area.

The other (white) solders wandered if the strange creatures were on their side when the one that looked more like a monster (younger brother) with little hair opened his mouth and fired a beam on electricity that wiped out everything in its path. The two of them were pleased with their destruction started to fly on with more in mind while the younger bother petted a pelt around its belly with its hand while they laughed about the jewel shards they had slaughtered others to get.”

My face was grim as I heard this tale from the kit anger running through my body and tinting my vision a tiny bit red though I did not notice. “Wait they murdered your father to get his shard of the Shikon Jewel? Why he’d have it?” I looked down at them with a glance a frown on my face and then looked over at Inuyasha who was also glowering as he jumped from branch to branch. “I couldn’t say, all I know that is the Thunder brothers steal the jewels from demons.”

I looked down at the creak and stopped on the tree just above where Kagome had stopped her bike as she looked back at Shippo “Thunder brothers?” Inuyasha moved restlessly next to her, I knew how he felt, all this energy and nowhere to run sigh! “It’s a nickname because of their thunder and lightning attacks.” I shifted restless and gripped hard on to Inuyasha as I nearly fell, my balance still improving, he huffed and ignored me “Heard of them Myoga?” I settled myself better on the branch as I turned and looked at the flea on Inuyasha’s shoulder.

“He must be talking about Hiten and Monten and if the rumours are true, those two are evil incarnate.” I knelt down balancing with one hand on the branch as I listened my expression blank as I listened. “Bit deal! All I’ve got to do is defeat the brothers and I’ll walk away with all their jewel shards!” I blinked out of my trance at Inuyasha’s cocky tone “and one day man will walk on the moon!” I blinked and hung over the side of the branch as I blinked at the kits sarcastic tone.

“You’re no match for the evil Thunder brothers! You’re only half demon, I can smell the human in you.” My eyes widened at Shippo’s words and then narrowed as a growl rumbled in my throat, what was with the insults? “this is between demons, its got noting to do with Hanyou’s such as you two, stay out of it” I growled out loud “Oi! Whats with the insults you bloody brat!” My eyes were narrow as my claws both dug in to the tree branch ‘why that little bastard, let me get my hands on him’ “That’s no way to speak to them.”

Then Inuyasha left my side and jumped down while hitting the kit on the head at the same time. “You big…” Then Inuyasha kept on hitting him on the head though it could tell they wouldn’t harm Shippo, Kagome did not know that “Go easy on him” I looked down at Kagome from my perch an annoyed look on my face “He deserves this Kagome!” She just gave me a smouldering glare “forgive me, no hard feelings, very sorry” I smiled as I felt better though guilt for Inuyasha hitting a kid was rearing up “Huh someone’s got to teach him a lesson.”

“and you’re the only one for the job?” Inuyasha looked backup at me as I sat in the branches looking down “well yeh, you wenches are too soft with this kind of thing, feh!” I blinked and smiled at the typical Inuyasha response he gave. “As a token of my apology…” I looked at Shippo as did Inuyasha when a statue clamped his hands to the floor and the kit put a sutra (Spell scroll) on to it to keep the illusion up. I blinked surprised; none of us had expected that.

“This supposed to be humorous?!” I sighed and jumped down next to Inuyasha as I glared at the kit; Kagome just looked surprised and a little annoyed herself. “heh heh, your stuck until you can get the sutra off.” I blinked and moved over to Inuyasha to read the scroll and to see if I could help him get it off. “don’t be so childish Shippo, take the spell off him.” I ran my fingers along the sutra and winced at the magic that sparked under my fingertips uncomfortably.

“Come on Inuyasha! The statue can’t be that heavy.” I scowled at her as I gripped the bottom of the statue along with Inuyasha “I’d like to see you free yourself! huhh” I tried to pull up the statue along with Inuyasha to try to get it off his hands ‘this thing weighs a bloody ton!’ but could not move it “I don’t like playing tricks on women if I can help it, don’t hold this against me you two” I blinked and turned half around as I watched Shippo jump at Kagome and smack her on the head “A little respect please” I shook my head and tried again to pull the statue off of Inuyasha.

“Thanks, I’ll use this to lure out the Thunder brothers.” I stood up when I saw he had the shards “Hey! That little dog he’s got my jewel shards again” I took a step forward a hand raised up to go catch the kit “get back here you mangy mutt!” I blinked at this and then turned my head to Inuyasha “wait Kagome! You can’t just leave me stuck like this! Wait Kagome!” I sighed and walked back to him. My ears drooped as I pealed at the sutra ignoring the small flashes of pain from it.

Then I heard someone coming along the road and I crouched down as I narrowed my eyes, a traveller noticed the bike and came right up curious about the contraption “please get this thing off me!” the traveller looked at Inuyasha and me and dropped the bike with a cry of monster as I ran a little after him “where are you going, please help us!” but he did not listen and I soon returned with a slump in my shoulders and ears.

I again tried to pull it off when I heard the blast in the distance and I turned around my ears fully up and straining to hear what it was again to confirm my suspicions. “Hey bitch, get back here! Get this sutra off” I sighed as my concentration was broken and I turned back to Inuyasha and moved back to him “I can’t get the sutra off Inuyasha and neither can Myoga” Inuyasha looked like he was going to kill something soon “Why that little fox! He’ll regret doing this to me!”

I groaned and turned around blinking at the kit that suddenly appeared in front of me “Inuyasha! I’ll help you on one condition, which is promise not to hit me anymore!” Inuyasha blinked at Shippo with an annoyed look on his face “Where’s Kagome? Why didn’t she come back with you!” I narrowed my eyes at the kit my anger overloading as well “I’m wandering that too.” Shippo had a determind face on “Will you promise me or won’t you?”

I rolled my eyes and balled up my fist “Ok! I won’t strike you!” Then Shippo took the sutra off the statue and it shrunk down to a tiny ‘toy? All that over a toy?’ I gritted my teeth “All right I’ll tell you where she is!” Then my fist came down on Shippo’s head before Inuyasha’s did “I thought we had a promise” I snorted ignoring Inuyasha’s amused face “Inuyasha yes, me no!” I then turned around and waited for them both my face in a frown.

“Oh right that reminds me, you have something that belongs to me.” I turned my head a bit and watched Inuyasha shake Shippo upside down by his tail making the jar of the jewel shard fall out on to the floor, Inuyasha then picked it up and tossed it to me, I blinked and caught it as I stared at his questionably “feh its safer with you and besides you have spiritual powers like Kagome” I nodded my head as I turned back around partly “right”

“Would you forget that for a while, Kagome’s been abducted by the Thunder brothers, so shouldn’t you go after her?” Inuyasha looked at Shippo with surprise in his face as he still held the kit by the tail. I narrowed my eyes as I looked at the kit “the same brothers that killed your father Shippo?” The kit looked over at me and nodded “you let them get away!” I sighed as Inuyasha put his face near Shippo’s “Your not exactly reeking of the scent of victory” I blinked at this and looked sharply at Shippo’s shifted eyes “You ran away!”

“Heh probably hid in the buses while Kagome was carried away.” I narrowed my eyes as a growl came out of my throat “no one abducts my sister. Why did you not try to get her back?!” Shippo looked annoyed at the both of us and attacked Inuyasha with his words “why you putting the blame all on me, she’s your woman you should at least do some of the rescuing!” I was surprised and very hurt by the pause Inuyasha put before answering as she through Shippo to the ground “She ain’t my woman! Huh, but I suppose it would not hurt to save her.”

I looked down at the ground and then through my hair that covered my eyes my expression carefully blank “If your prepared to give me and apology that is and also prepare a nice hot bath tonight!” I sighed and walked passed them both brushing Inuyasha’s shoulder and catching his eye my fears shining in my own, I held his for a long second and then turned fully away and waited buy Kagome’s bike as I turned to partly look at Inuyasha and Shippo who had just apologised.

“Come on Shippo, we have a lot of work to do, lets ship out!” I smiled at the kit from Inuyasha’s side he was showing me facing Shippo opposite to Inuyasha “You can ride on my shoulder Shippo” Inuyasha and I began the walk down the road both in our own thoughts even when Shippo finally caught up and jumped on to my shoulder, Inuyasha and I enjoyed the quiet peacefulness that overtook us both as we moved.

We ran along the rocky area sharp rocks and dead mountains covered the area as the darkness got darker and darker as night fully set in. Shippo didn’t sound happy as he held on as tight as possible in the basket of the bike where I had put him as Inuyasha a I jumped up each cliff and moved platform to platform as we moved over the top of the long drop, Shippo was sacred stiff on my back “What’s the matter Shippo? Not afraid of heights are ya?” I snorted at this even though I remember how frightened I was before I got these instincts, they did wonders for getting rid of fear, “I can always take you back if your frightened.”

I smiled enjoying myself “Wouldn’t that waste more time?” Inuyasha gave me a smirk as he leaped higher than he needed to on the next jump and sent Shippo crying out in fear as he landed safely on the next peak my laughter following them both as I caught up easily. “I’m not afraid! I’m going to save Kagome and avenge father, with a, little help from you two that is. You better be as strong as you both say you are, those Thunder brothers have jewels in their heads that make them powerful.”

Then we came to an end of the peaks and we both stood there on top of I, I turned my head and raised an eyebrow at Inuyasha “that’ll only make defeating them more enjoyable!” I waggled my eyebrows and Inuyasha’s smirk got more pronounced. My ears twitched and I scanned the skies the thunder making me twitchy, something about it was not right. The nagging behind me was annoying me, I then turned around my face annoyed “Would both of you shut it something isn’t right!” Both of the shut up then I gasped and looked up at the cloud above us, my eyes widened as lightning sped down to where we were situated and blew up the rock sending us all flying.

I landed near Shippo and I got up shaking my head my ears flat back as I looked up in the sky when Inuyasha grabbed Shippo I scrambled out the way in the nick of time though it was a near thing about getting roasted alive. I uncovered my face and looked up at the older of the two bothers Hiten “Very impressive manoeuvre! Dodging my lighting bolt, especially en-light of your dull uninspired conversation just now!” my eyes were wide at how human he looked though the evil that came from him made all my instincts go on high alert.

“You must be the reputed Inuyasha himself and the dead Hanyou Shade.” I narrowed my eyes though I did not let him out of my sight my lips pulled back in a silent snarl that showed all my fangs. “Where’s Kagome?! What have you done with her?!” Shippo sounded angry but I could detect fear in his demand “You shouldn’t despair we haven’t done anything to her yet! Monten!” I looked up at where he looked “Coming brother” and pulled out Kagome enough so we could see her “Behold” I sighed in relief as Kagome appeared unharmed and I knew Inuyasha felt it as well “Inuyasha!” “Kagome!” Both of them called out to the other and Shippo slipped off Inuyasha’s back, I moved forward and picked him up, situating him on my shoulder and stood next to Inuyasha as we both looked up at Kagome our expressions grim.

“From you expression the girl told the truth” I blinked ‘the truth about…. Oh no I remember this episode its where she clamed Inuyasha as her lover’ “now hand over the pieces of the sacred jewel to me. Or you’ll never see you’re lover alive again!” My eyes went wide and I snorted low enough that no-one heard me, while watching Hiten send of lighting “See my lover?” I snorted again “Well it works to stop them killing her” He just sent me a smouldering glare and then turned it on Hiten.

“There must be some misunderstanding! Let me get this straight, you and I are supposed to be lovers!” I shook my head and sighed “She’s really put him in the position now” Shippo just blinked watching from his perch on my shoulder. “This is no time to get all shy.” I gulped back laughter as Monten pulled her back on the cloud and I heard his words perfectly “You little vixen, I knew you were fibbing!” a low growl echoed though the brothers did not notice, so Inuyasha noticed as well “you accually think I would had over the jewel shards as a ransom to get you back!”

I smelt Kagome’s anger before I heard her “Of course you would for that’s what a lover would do!” I shook my head at this spectacle “How the hell did this get out of control” Shippo just sighed “Don’t get on well do they?” I nodded to that statement “But we ain’t lovers and without love the whole argument kinda falls apart!” I looked up at Hiten and noticed he was getting impatient with the quarrelling between the two, he wanted the jewel shards and he wanted them now along with a side course of battling to go with them.

“So now some little gems are more important than me? How dare you say that after all we have been through together! In the meantime you better admit to yourself that you really love me!” I gave a startled snort ‘way to put it on Kagome’ I was hiding a grin at this point when Hiten had decided he had enough. “I believe I’ve heard my fill, its clear that you do have some jewels for us Inuyasha! Jewels that will be mine!” I gasped and ran away from where Inuyasha was standing, I did not want to get caught up in this fight really.

Shippo and I soon got behind a couple of rocks which were big enough to blank us and I then turned to Shippo on my shoulder who looked scared but not as much as if he had been on his own “So how are we getting to Kagome?”
