Chapter 10: I Spy.
The special and secret twinge through her body revealed itself as she turned and stretched. A glowing smile graced her face. Kagome felt an excited little bubble of humor float up through her. Everything felt a little more that morning.
The air was sharper and stronger.
The sounds were more prominent.
The sights were sharper and more pronounced.
She was thrilled. She would be an aunt, but she did hope they would finish the jewel before it became too late and cause more danger for Sango. Kagome was sure that Koga and Sesshomaru were planning to deliver the news to Miroku soon; it was too soon for Sango to realize that she was expecting her own little pup.
Kagome pulled the jewel out and looked at the nearly finished sphere, feeling reassured to their progress, put it away again.
She stood up and dressed for the day swiftly.
Approaching Sango, she decided right then that she would walk with her. Even though they were close and still in the same pack, they hadn’t spent much time together since Hakitaki joined the group.
“Morning, Sango. How are you feeling?”
“Like I could sleep for the rest of the morning. I think that I’m coming down with a cold or something. Strange, I’m almost never sick.”
“How about we walk towards the back, then?”
“It’s fine with me as long as it’s good with your mates. Lord Sesshomaru has seemed on edge and hasn’t let you out of his sight and barely away from his side.”
“I know, but he wants me to watch out for you anyway, so I think he’ll be swayed to say yes.”
Just as Kagome had predicted, Sesshomaru was okay with the idea, although he opted to walk between Hakitaki and Kagome.
The day went off without a hitch. Everybody was more relaxed and the tension seemed to be relieving itself. Ginta, Hakkaku and Kohaku went out towards the woods and caught some rabbits while they were progressing towards the East.
After about an hour into the trip, Sango could not contain her curiosity at Kagome’s message. For some unknown reason, Sesshomaru and Koga wanted a close eye kept on her-not on Kagome.
“Kagome, what are Sesshomaru and Koga worried about? Why would you need to watch me? I know the regular dangers, but they have never seemed to be concerned about me above everyone else.”
Kagome smiled and put an arm around Sango’s waist. “I’m not sure if I should tell you or not. Let me go ask.”
Before she could even move, Koga came back towards her.
“What did you need, my Kagome?”
“Um…I was going to ask if I should tell Sango that she is pregnant or not.”
“Sure, we’ll tell Miroku that he is to be a daddy now as well. Is that all?”
“Yes…how did you know that I was about to go ask you something?”
“We’re mates; we are supposed to know when the other needs us.” As cryptic as his answer was, Kagome merely nodded and decided that it was just one of those demon things. She hung back, preparing herself to tell her sister that she would be a mom.
“Sango, I know that we have talked about you and Miroku having a baby, and you said you were not ready right now. Well, what if you were already pregnant? How would you take that?”
Sango’s eyes widened. The shock of what she was now sure she would be told was immense.
“You mean…I am…Miroku and I…” She took a deep breath trying to calm herself down.
Kagome put her arm back around her back and pulled her close.
“Yes. You and Miroku are going to grace our pack with another little pup. I can’t wait to be an aunt, but the birth is still about eight months off. I hope we finish the jewel before it becomes too dangerous. Thankfully, we have most of it, and Naraku is no longer an issue.”
The girls paused when they heard a whoop of pure joy coming from the area that Miroku, Sesshomaru and Koga were walking in. Sango just smiled and shook her head. Now, he would be impossible.
They saw all three males walking back towards them. Miroku in the front fallowed by Koga and Sesshomaru almost having trouble keeping up with the excited husband. He ran up and swung Sango in his arms.
“My fair Sango! We are to have a little one!”
“Yes, seems that way.”
The group continued until they finally made it to their destination that night.
They opted to camp outside of the rather large village of Tyoro. Camp was being set up, and they were splitting up watch shifts and keeping the females and pups together to watch closely. Sango and the pups were not to have duty. Kagome had been able to sense the shards-she knew that it was more than one-for the past half hour. What they didn’t know was about what type of demon had the shards and how strong it was.
Jaken, Kohaku and Hakkaku had first watch.
Koga and Miroku for second watch.
Sesshomaru and Kagome for third.
Kilala, Ginta and Hakitaki for fourth.
Now that the order had been decided and protocol had been agreed on, the group bedded close together since there would not be a fire. The pups and Sango slept towards the center with the others forming something like a ring around them.
Koga and Miroku were woken up with a dull report. Nothing had happened and Hakkaku hadn’t smelled anything near by.
When Koga woke Sesshomaru up, it was a different report. He had seen something lurking in the trees near their camp. He had never caught it. Whatever it was seemed to disappeared whenever he came close to it.
“It smells like a cat demon, but it doesn’t seem to act like one.”
Sesshomaru and Koga woke up their mate. She jumped up and pulled Sesshomaru. He explained what Koga had been telling him.
“I sense the jewel shards in the tree-right there,” she said pointing.
Sesshomaru and Kagome were trying to find whatever was checking their group out. Kagome knew that whoever was out there in the trees evading them was whom they came to get.
The couple had settled into keeping a silent vigil watching where the demon with the shards was.
They were an hour into their two-hour watch when the cat decided to make its move.
He came out of the tree and circled the couple.
“I think that your pack ran into a couple that I know quite some time back.”
“How would we know if we ran into them?” Kagome asked, tossing all caution into the wind.\
“I do believe that your group killed Mila and Lynx. Mila was quite strong, and Lynx could defeat almost any of his foes over Mila. I’m surprised a bunch of humans even touched them.”
Kagome was getting more and more furious at the demon before her. After the problems and destruction those two demons had caused to her life, this mocking intrusive appearance was the last straw.
The cat continued to close in on the two as she circled them.
“You don’t seem so powerful, little girl. How could your puny miko powers competed with the jewel shards and an enraged demon? Hm…you’re getting angry. Yes, go ahead and get upset.” The mocking tone was getting to her more and more. The offensive demon had gotten really close to Kagome-not close enough to touch but to intimidate.
Kagome put out her hand on instinct to keep the cat from coming closer. “You have no business coming here. They asked for what they got. Mila attacked us, as did Lynx. Now, leave us alone!”
She yelled and expended a powerful blast of energy towards that demon. The blast was different from her miko powers and sacred arrows.
It left a sizzle in the air and glowed a swirling mixture of pink, blue and green.
Sesshomaru was stunned; he had allowed Kagome her say as he felt that she needed it. He had heard something from her that he wasn’t sure that came from some mind link that was forming or if she had actually spoken out.
Looking where the cat demon had been, there was the bones and ground. All seemed to have partially melted and held a putrid scent. There was an underlying zing from her miko powers, but whatever was added to it was definitely stronger in that blast.
Kagome seemed shocked for a moment.
“That…that…that came from ME?!?”
Sesshomaru pulled her toward himself and held her while stroking her hair.
“You do not have any knowledge of what you just did,” he stated.
“I did that. I don’t even know what I did. My miko powers don’t usually work like that when I am angry, and I wasn’t afraid. That didn’t even feel normal.”
He held her for a few moments before turning her around and asking about the shards. Kagome found the three shards she had been sensing for sometime. One shard was particularly large.
She placed them in the other part of the jewel, which started glowing brightly.
The jewel floated up about an inch above her hands and glowed a bright, blinding pink and melded together.
The jewel was whole.
Kagome collapsed when the jewel floated back down into her hands.
Sesshomaru pick Kagome up and carried her back to camp to wake the others. She was lax across his arms and he laid her down where Koga was asleep.
He shook his other mate awake.
“The demon with the shards is dead. The jewel is complete as is our quest. We need to wake the others and let them know.” The two proceeded to wake everyone with the exception of Shippo and Rin and impart the events that had happened to everyone with the exception of the odd, new energy blast Kagome had done.
Kagome woke up not long after she had been laid down and went over to Sango to ask about what had just happened. Sango looked puzzled before asking to look at the place that the demon was melted at. Kagome nodded and agreed to take her as soon as the sun came up in about an hour.
Whew, this chapter gave me a few problems. I wasn’t really sure what to do with it. Well, let me know what you all think. I’m open to comments, suggestions, criticisms or whatever.
Thanks to everybody that has left a review. I am so happy that you like this story. I am having fun writing it. I hope ya’ll continue to enjoy it.
Have very happy Holidays and be careful out there.
