Chapter 10: Revelations
Sesshomaru was feeling edgy. So far Kagome hasn’t said one word to him since his declaration, and that was two courses ago! They were now on to their main dish, and he knew he had to draw her out somehow, so he asked the first question that came to his head.
“So, what is your family like?” he mentally smacked himself in the forehead. ‘What a good one line, inane starter! I should be able to do better than that!’ But before he could ask another question, she spoke.
“My family is dead, other than Kikyo.” She said quietly, still not looking at him. “They died in a car accident almost 6 years ago. They were going to the beach for the weekend, but I had to work. I had just started my job with The Twilight Dragon, and wasn’t able to get the time off. They were pronounced dead on the scene. The accident was quick and they didn’t suffer. But I miss them so much,” she said tearing up. “The only reason why I have been able to move on is because I know that they would have wanted me to. They would have wanted for me to be happy. But I haven’t been,” she said. “I’ve existed since then, not really living.” Kagome looked up at Sesshomaru, tears still swimming in her eyes. Her lips firmed. “That happened less than a week before Inu Yasha,” she said derisively, “dumped me to start going out with Kikyo. She had come around later the next day to start gloating over the fact that she had not only taken him from me, but she also had you on the side. And here I couldn’t even keep one of the Tashio men. At the time I was torn. I wanted to rip her hair out, but I also wanted to cry. I had just lost my main family, and the only family I had left seemed to hate me, so I cried. She scoffed and scorned me, and ever since that time, any time we meet, she has insulted me and put me down. Tonight was the only time in almost 6 years where I stood up for myself. And the whole time, as afraid as I was at the time that you would hate me or leave me behind, I also somehow felt your support. Underneath my fear and anger, I seemed to know that you would stand by me.” She said wondrously, not noticing that their dishes were being taken away, and a coffee pot with two cups was set to the side, ready for them to use as the wait staff quietly and discreetly withdrew.
Sesshomaru was stunned by everything she had said. ‘Inu Yasha and his bitch will pay for the mental abuse they have played upon my mate!’ he thought savagely. “To be put through all of that, and you still have hope for the future, I am in awe of your bravery, my little miko.” He said quietly. “Kagome how about we move over to the chairs by the fireplace, to have coffee and talk some more?” He suggested.
Kagome agreed, and they both took their coffees to the chairs. Before she could sit in one chair, and after she had set her coffee down on the side table, Sesshomaru lightly grasped her wrist and pulled her close for a kiss. It was gentle, but with a little hunger.
“Forgive me, but I can’t let you go yet.” He said as he sat, than gently tugged her down to sit across his lap. “Hmm,” he rumbled, holding her close. “This is nice. Now, let me tell you about myself and Inu Yasha growing up over the centuries.” He started.
Kagome’s eyes widened. ‘He doesn’t look like he is that old! Neither does Yasha!’ she thought incredulously.
For the next two and a half hours, Sesshomaru told Kagome about their initial hate of each other when they were young. Of the usual sibling rivalry, and how each had worked to top the other in their father’s eyes.
“But that no longer appeals to me.” He finished after telling her about when he and Inu Yasha had almost killed each other over a sword that their father had given to Yasha, and Sesshomaru wanted it.
He looked into her eyes. “I now wish to experience something new, more exciting than anything I have ever done. I wish to mate with you. Kagome, I know I said I would wait until you were ready, and I will, but I need to know now what your answer is.” He said in all seriousness.
“Kagome, do you accept my suit to become your mate?”
