Delusions of Grandeur
Chapter 8:
Delusions of Grandeur
Izayoi peered suspiciously at her mate for about the fifteenth time that evening as the pair lounged in the family room. He seemed to be deep in his own little world, and ever so often a self satisfied grin appeared on his face. For the life of her she couldn’t figure out what he had bouncing around in that thick head of his. Goodness knew there was nothing to be giddy about these days with regard to every child bearing their name.
She sighed thinking of Rin’s recent behavior. If she didn’t know better, she’d swear the girl was turning into a female version of teenage Inuyasha. Fighting had never been her forte, she was much to laid back. Since the day the Sesshomaru had returned, the teen’s language had definitely taken a more vulgar turn. But to be physically violent, and the aggressor in an altercation? That was way out of left field.
As to her biological child, well he practically ignored his parents altogether. It seemed the only one in the house Inuyasha communicated with was Rin. And she certainly wasn’t forthcoming with information. Izayoi knew he was staying with Kagome – that much was to be expected – and that the young woman was now in the role of nursemaid. The knowledge made the half demon’s mother feel better. If she knew anything about her son’s best friend, it was that she would take excellent care of him and see that he followed all the doctors orders and take any medication on time. Izayoi chuckled inwardly also with certainty that he would fight her tooth and nail. Kagome would win, of course. But that never stopped him from resisting.
Her thoughts shifted to what appeared to be the catalyst in all this chaos – Sesshomaru. The little information she’d been able to obtain left her confused. There were more questions than answers. She wanted to know, as did the young heir’s father, why he played such a horrible prank on Kagome. Something had nagged at the Lady of the West though… she’d known Sesshomaru, or at least his habits and mannerisms, for the better part of three decades… to do what he is accused of just didn’t seem like him. She would admit that becoming ‘close’ to the taiyoukai was virtually impossible, especially for her. But she did know, and would stand by, he was not one to play games. He was calculating and cunning, downright evil when provoked. But somehow Kagome penetrated his defenses and he fell for her… hard. Any fool could see he had been deeply in love with the girl.
Fool? Blinking for a moment, Izayoi wondered if it had been part of his plan. Did he mean to deceive all of us? Were we all the “fools” in this well played ruse?
Something deep within her held to his innocence. There must be another explanation. It just didn’t fit.
Beside her, Lord Taisho gave a low chuckle gaining her attention. He had that stupid grin on his face again.
“Alright!” He started at the sound of her annoyed voice, “What’s going on? Just what is so damned funny?”
The demon lord looked at her as if he’d been asked to explain quantum physics.
“You’ve been sitting over there all night grinning like an idiot. What are you up to?”
“Up to?”
“Yes!”
He regained his senses and turned toward his irritated wife. “I am not up to anything. Why do you ask?”
“Don’t play stupid with me.” She wasn’t fooled. “You are plotting, or you have done something… which is it?”
“Ah.” He laughed then. Obviously his excitement over the sheer brilliance of what he’d done was seeping through every pore of his body. “You are correct in your assumption, my dear. I have done something.” He paused to smile broadly at his own genius. “I’ve come up with a way to bridge the gap between our children.”
His wife was dumbstruck as he recounted this so-called master plan.

“You do realize Inuyasha’s going to kill you, right?” Kohaku shook his head. “Just so we’re clear. You may wonna tell your mom to start looking at black dresses.”
Bankotsu shoved the younger man’s shoulder. “Shut up. Are you in, or out?”
Renkotsu laughed before taking a deep chug from his water bottle.
Sango’s brother sighed deeply while turning things over in his mind. He kicked the basketball at his feet and exhaled. “Who else knows about this? What about my sister?”
“What about her?” Hiten was squatted down retying his shoe.
“What about her? You’re joking.” The slayer chuckled. “If this has a chance of working, though I doubt it will anyway, you’ll need Sango on board. Nobody else has Kagome’s ear like she does.”
Koga was seated on the wooden bench just off the blacktop of the public basketball court. He wiped sweat from his face, and then tossed the towel over his glistening shoulder. “We got someone better.”
The others chuckled, still in shock he and Bankotsu were able to pull it off.
Kohaku was mystified. No-one was closer to Kagome than Sango as far as a person to confide in or give advice. “Who?”
He got annoyed when his companions shared a knowing smirk with each other.
“Well?!” He demanded.
“First things first.” Ginkotsu looked serious. “Are you in, or out?”
They needed to be sure of the boy’s position before their ace in the hole, or any other conspirators, was revealed.
“Look Hawk,” Bankotsu started. “This is serious shit. We can’t tell you anything more until we know you’re on board. It’s not personal, we all know you’re trustworthy. But Yash finding out is a risk that can’t be taken.”
“Alright already.” His curiosity made the decision for him. “I’m in.” It wasn’t like they were plotting a grand coup – just getting Kagome to agree to let Kouga court her formally until the High Counsel adjourns. How mad could Inuyasha really be about that? After all, they’d be protecting her.
Ha! How mad could he be? Kohaku’s conscious laughed. He won’t be mad at all… he’ll be pissed!
“Now, who’s better than my sister? Not even Mrs. Higurashi has that kind of pull.”
Hiten snorted sarcastically, “Like we’d discuss any of this with her! Are you nuts?”
“Yeah, that’s way too much explaining to be done.” Suikotsu waved his hands in a negative manner. “And a violation against the pack on that particular topic.” Outside of himself and Bankotsu, none of the other Shichinintai brothers knew the full story. They were all friends, of course, but not close enough to be considered ‘pack.’
Kouga nodded, “Outside of those here we have Ayumi.”
“Heh!” Kohaku snorted, interrupting the wolf. “And I’m sure that was B’s doing.”
Bankotsu playfully punched his friend in the stomach. “Shut up!”
“You just aren’t going to rest until you get a piece of her, eh?” The boy caused to others to giggle and send a barrage of crude remarks Bankotsu’s way. “Any old excuse to spend time with her… just ask her out already!”
“You’re such a douche.” B quipped.
“You’d kill somebody to be her douche!” Renkotsu choked and gagged on the water he’d been swallowing upon hearing Hawk’s retort. Turning his attention back to Kouga he asked, “Alright, who else? Who is it that you think could get farther with this than Sango?”
Kouga flashed an impish grin, “Shippo.”
…And Kohaku’s mouth fell open.

“Speak.”
“Yes, mi Lord. I am sorry to be so bothersome, but your father requests your presence first thing in the morning.”
What now? Golden eyes narrowed in annoyance.
“He wishes you to come to his office before going to your own.” The nervous toad continued.
He wishes… The demon prince smirked. He was in no way inclined to oblige his father’s wishes. “This Sesshomaru will see His father when His schedule permits.”
The call was ended.
Rising from the sofa in his massive penthouse suite, the taiyoukai strode out the open balcony door. He had no interest in whatever the current ruler had to say. Too many other things were deemed more important.
While overlooking the city below, his thoughts drifted to a recent conversation.
Are you certain, old man?”
The old tiger demon seemed confused by the question. “Why yes, my Lord. Your Intended picked up the order personally.” He wasn’t sure, but he got the impression something was not right.
As the tall dog demon appeared to mull things over, the shop owner spoke again, “I did not think anything was out of the ordinary since it was the second time she’d picked it up alone.”
“Second time?” The inquiry came out before Sesshomaru could stop it.
“Yes. The same time last year she came in, on schedule. My grandson helped her that day, I remember. She came back into the greenhouse to say hello and offered to help me with a few seedlings.” He laughed at the memory. He would never dream of accepting one of her station assisting with such a dirty task. “Is something the matter, my lord?”
Mr. Choo always hand pick and arranged the flowers himself. None of his children or grandchildren were permitted to do that particular order. The dog heir was his best customer, hands down, and the tiger was quite troubled that something with such an important bouquet may have gone wrong. Were it not for Lord Sesshomaru’s generosity and recommendations to his high society acquaintances, Blossoms & Buds would have closed long ago. As it was though, his small store had become the preferred florist to the A-list crowd. So much so that he recruited his family to help with the demand.
Taking notice of the nervous shift in the old demon’s aura, Sesshomaru ignored the flood of new questions in his mind. “How did she seem?”
He frowned while thinking causing the gray whiskers flanking his feline nose to dip slightly. Finally, he answered, “She appeared to be fine. Nothing was amiss.”
“Hn.” The inu youkai turned and left without another word.
Twice. She had taken flowers to his mother’s resting place twice. Each time on schedule. But why? Her rejection was clear. As was her resentment of being near him… he pictured the fear on her face when she bumped into him after leaving the ladies room. But what disturbed him more was the anger shown when she was questioned about the self inflicted injury. She acted as though he was out of line in demanding an explanation. He had not seen her since. His father had placed her, as well as most of his half brother’s little band of miscreants, on mandatory leave.
And then there was the High Counsel to be dealt with. His sire feigned ignorance as to the reason for the sudden summons. Though Sesshomaru detected no deceit in the older male’s words, it had been he that promised to see the dog prince tried before the panel.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
As flaming orange began to give way to violet evening hues, Kagome remained oblivious to the days end. Time had no meaning to the young woman who’d spent an unknown amount of time seated on the ground, under the huge sacred tree. Her head was tilted back, eyes closed, resting on the ancient bark.
“Kagome, please…”
“I do not understand.”
The troubled baritone ghosted through her mind. Paying it no attention was not hard… especially since she had a little inner battle of her own going on.
The fight between Sesshomaru and Inuyasha had been absolutely brutal. She’d never seen the hanyo come so close to losing all of himself to demonic blood rage. Absently, she shuddered. All traces of gold were gone from his eyes, leaving only glowing red with blue pupils. The markings on his face had appeared. Having seen them over the years whenever Inuyasha was extremely angry, she wasn’t surprised. What caught her off guard was the longer the pair fought, the darker in color they became. The deeper shade coincided with bursts in strength signaling a downward spiral to losing complete control. It terrified her… and that, she did not like at all. There was never a time Kagome could remember where she was afraid of her best friend.
Lord Taisho was lucky he was finally able to separate his sons. He’d been able to get between them a few times. But in each instance it had been Inuyasha who kept attacking, throwing his own father out of his path to get at the object of his ire. Soon he saw the older taiyoukai as a threat as well. The stripes across his cheeks had bled to be almost black by then. It seemed he’d become drunk with hate.
The reigning demon lord recognized this after a well placed blow form his youngest pup that cracked a few of his own ribs. He knew Sesshomaru would never back down, but at that point he also knew Inuyasha wouldn’t stop until he killed his brother. While still focusing on ending the brawl, protecting Sesshomaru added itself to his priority list. They were brothers… at the end of the day; they were still family no matter what happened between them. That would never change.
To their father, it didn’t matter that Sesshomaru was the most powerful of the three, and certainly didn’t need protection. The younger taiyoukai was his pup. The Great Dog didn’t know how he managed it, but he was grateful when he finally got the fighting stopped. He would never know it wasn’t him at all…
“Inuyasha stop!!” As she sat on the grounds of her family home, the memory returned tears to her eyes.
Of course, like everyone else present, she’d been yelling at them both to stop fighting. Seeing the very real blackness and fury of his youkai side come to the surface was horrifying. She’d begun to cry. Lucky for her (and Sesshomaru, and Lord Taisho), no matter the circumstance, no matter how far he was from actually being Inuyasha… he still hated her tears. He had long since tuned out her voice, as well as the other spectators, but it was the smell of her fear, sadness, disappointment, and those stupid fucking tears that got to him… that made him return to himself. It was the scent of salt and water and lilacs, her mix in the saline smell that allowed him to hone in on her emotions. She was scared, something he never permitted anyone to do... and she’d never been scared of him.
“What’s the matter, baby girl?” Jeweled blue eyes opened to see Kouga standing in front of her.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
After parking his truck in the small shrine lot, he’d been heading up to the main house when the smell of her tears on the breeze drew him to the tree. She didn’t hear his approach. It was the wolf’s nature to walk silently. After all, he’s a predator instinctively. A thin stream flowed from under her closed lids.
He stood there for a few minutes trying to decide what to do. His heart was screaming for him to brush the offending water away and embrace her. He did not take kindly to her distress any better than Inuyasha, and he was certain whatever was upsetting her had something to do with Sesshomaru’s return… in one way or another.
~* ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Kagome sniffed, offering a smile and wiping her cheeks with the back of her hand. “Oh, it’s nothing.”
Yeah right. He angrily pursed his lips. She didn’t see it because her gaze was on the ground at his feet.
The demon moved to take a place next to her. Their shoulders were touching causing her to be jostled a little as he got comfortable. She didn’t mind. Exhaustion washed over her.
“Look,” bending his knees, then resting his forearms on them he looked at her solemnly, “If you’re going to lie to a demon, it would help if the water works weren’t turned on. And it would also help if my nose was stopped up. Ya know, the whole ‘smelling’ thing?”
A short, watery laugh escaped her throat.
“I’m just saying…” he gave himself a mental pat on the back for lightening her mood slightly. “Now, talk to me. That mutt giving you problems?” A small jab at Inuyasha wouldn’t hurt. It would get her talking.
Bingo! The plan worked.
“No… it’s not him.” she whispered. Although he was a big baby when it came time to take his pain medication, and trying to keep him from ripping the cast off his wrist was an everyday nightmare, the half demon wasn’t the reason she had been crying. She closed her eyes again before continuing. “It’s all my fault.”
“Huh?” Kouga was confused. “What’s your fault?”
Giving a tired shrug she spoke, “Inuyahsa.”
Wha…? The taiyoukai didn’t question her though. He figured she was piecing her thoughts together. He would give her all the time she needed.
“The fight.”
Ahhh. The long ponytail on top of his head dipped with the slow nod of understanding.
“He was so mad, Kouga.” Twin blue seas focused directly on his face. “And it’s my fault.”
“How,” he tried very hard not to swear, “in the world was that your fault?”
“Even you were mad… really mad.”
“Of course I was!” The prince held an indignant tone. The thirst for Sesshomaru’s blood had only been more prevalent when he found out they slept together and the dog abandoned her afterward. “He hurt you! You were bleeding!”
“But I told you… it was an accident. He cut me on accident when Inuyasha hit us.”
“Him.” the male corrected. “Yash hit him, not you. You just happened to be there.”
“It was still an accident.”
He recalled the total chaos within the pack once they were away from Taisho Towers regarding her injury. His blood heated still at the thought. “But we didn’t know that at the time. When it happened, I smelled blood, it was yours, he did it – that’s all I needed to know.”
Kagome laughed at his short and sweet guide to why he felt the need to kick Sesshomaru’s butt.
“And besides, I got to take out some frustration on that stupid moth for getting in my way.”
She groaned remembering the other fight between Kouga and Menomaru that took place the same day, at practically the same time. The secondary altercation had been considerably shorter thanks to fast acting parties on both sides breaking it up. “You guys are insane.”
He shrugged nonchalantly, “Not always, Baby Girl, only when it comes to you.” His heart swelled at little at how personally close to home the statement had been. “Why are you blaming yourself? He had it coming, you know that.”
She knew her friends, Inuyasha most of all, had been chomping at the bit for more than a year to get their hands on her ex. But she never expected things to get so bad.
“That’s just it.” Kagome huffed. “The whole he had it coming thing is because of me. You guys wouldn’t be so mad, Inuyasha wouldn’t have fought him… shoot, you wouldn’t have thought I tried to kill myself for crying out loud, IF I hadn’t been so upset when he left.”
Kouga took her hand in his and shook it to halt her speech. There was so much wrong with what she said. “Alright, first of all, you had – and have – every right to be upset about that shit for brains leaving. For Christ’s sake, Kagome, you were going to mate him! The whole thing still fucks me up! I mean, he had you… you… and he just… some people would kill to have been in his position and he turned around and did that?!” The elfin tips of his ears began to heat up. He took a deep breathe before moving on to the next issue, dwelling on the current one would’ve had him hunting Sesshomaru later that night for sure. “You can’t be blamed for the fight, period. I mean come on… how many battle royals have they had growing up? After awhile I just chalked it up to their nature. We wolves fight with each other all the time.”
“But wolves are just playing when they fight.” She pointed out. The young ruler and his native pack rough housed just about every chance they got.
Her companion shook his head. “Not always. Mostly yeah, it’s just for kicks, but not always. And those two,” His pointed teeth flashed when he paused to laugh about the inu siblings, “well there has never been any love loss. The bottom line is Sesshomaru is at fault. You are ours… plain and simple. We allowed him in and the condition has always been if he hurt you, we’d hurt him. I really hope you didn’t think we were kidding.”
“You break her heart, I break your fucking neck!” Inuyasha had made a huge production, in front of everyone and thoroughly embarrassing her to no end, the first time she brought Sesshomaru to one of their outings.
“You didn’t do anything wrong. So get that out of your pretty little head.” He smiled as his hand brushed her cheek causing her to blush slightly. “And I should’ve known better than to think you’d really want to kill yourself.” He mentally kicked himself. “I’m sorry.” The depth of his perceived betrayal of her truly weighed heavily on the demon.
For her part, Kagome rolled her eyes chuckling. “Yeah well… thanks for not putting me in a straight jacket. I would’ve been quite confused.”
“Keh! You don’t know the hell I would’ve raised to keep that from happening. You think the office got fucked up? Try thinking of that same kind of damage, but with a radius of about five miles.”
Well that’s… scary. Guess I better not really go insane anytime soon… the public would suffer severely. A quiet giggle accompanied the thought.
The subject shifted again.
“I don’t want to sound stupid or anything, but the markings on Ya-Ya’s face…” Her voice trailed off unsure of how to continue.
The same question had come up quite a bit amongst the full youkai in the group. None of them had seen anything like it. They’d even gone to Ayame’s grandfather for clarity. Lord Shiroi also seemed perplexed stating he would search through the Tribal Histories for an answer.
“Yeah that,” Kagome watched Kouga’s hand move to his chin as he thought, “I’m not sure what to tell you, Baby Girl. I really don’t know. We’ve all seen him flip totally out at least once… but he’s never gotten that bad. His youkai blood was definitely stirring… fighting for dominance. His eyes actually changed this time…” The wolf was speaking to himself at that point. “Like a true youkai.”
Because of me. The guilt over the whole situation was overwhelming.
“Listen,” Superior senses detected her sadness. “we are pack. Your sadness is our sadness, your pain our pain. On the flip side, your happiness is ours too. The situation caused you to be unhappy-”
Unhappy? Yeah, that’s the understatement of the millennium!
“-so, naturally, we are less than pleased. You know the deal… you’ve been around youkai your whole life. Your position demands justice on your behalf. As Alpha, if you were youkai he would’ve been hunted down and executed a long time ago. You gotta see we are justified, Kagome. And outside of you, I can’t get over the complete disrespect of his clan. That’s just crazy.”
“He told me once he’d give up his crown for me.” A warm smile couldn’t help but to appear.
Kouga chuckled darkly “And he will. Oh baby, you just don’t know.” He knew the counsel would practically crucify the Dynasty of the House of the Moon.
The stars fully decorated the night sky before the pair made their way inside the house where Kagome’s mother had dinner waiting. Kagome felt better about the situation. Quite frankly she was fortunate to have so many people who cared about her. It was sweet. Catastrophically violent at times, but sweet nonetheless. She appreciated Kouga for being there. Normally Ro was the resident confidant, but Kouga had done a pretty good job for someone who just sort of fell into it.
Inuyasha had been indoors helping Suzuka with an avalanche of chores the entire day. What he didn’t know was he’d been set up… Kagome had placed a call to her mom the night before and asked for help in keeping the hanyo occupied so she could have a break. Mrs. Higurashi was glad to oblige and set to making a list of “urgent” things she needed his help with around the house. When Kagome finally came in, he was surprised to see the wolf demon with her. Of course, the masculine harassment and banter started immediately.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Kikyo glared at the garments covering her king-sized bed.
Ugh! What am I going to wear?! Her mind wailed and she visibly pouted.
Just about every professional outfit she owned was strewn on the pink rose printed comforter. Tomorrow was the day she’d waited for… things had to be perfect. She had to look stone cold and dressed to the nines.
She glanced at her watch. Shit.
The mall had been closed for hours. Huffing angrily, she marched back into the walk in closet that was larger than most people’s bedrooms. Shelves and racks hosted more designer names than fashion week in Paris.
Perfection. It was a simple goal. One she deserved… because she was already perfect. Her size, body shape, hair, facial features, personality… in her mind, she was the total package. She was so awesome that she’d come up with the perfect plan for revenge.
That home wrecking hooker wouldn’t know what hit her! She’d stolen something from Kikyo… and nobody stole from Kikyo Mikimoto. Nobody. She was finally in a position to inflict the pain once bestowed upon her. It would be so sweet… and the reward at the end would be greater than she ever imagined.
I wonder… what it will be like to see Inuyasha again. She mused. If she played her cards right, she just might become the new heiress to the Taisho Dynasty. If Kagome the whore could switch brothers, why couldn’t she? The girl was a peasant compared to Kikyo. Who would be stupid enough to trade the tribal heir for the second in line? A half demon who would never hold any power?
Make no mistake, she had loved Inuyasha… it was real… but he abandoned her. He chose another over her. Thus earning her wrath as well. There were many nights during the break up Kikyo wondered if the two of them had planned it all along. Should either one of their relationships end, they would be together. It made sense. Clearly Sesshomaru must’ve figured it out as well… which is why he left. The problem with that was it played right into the hands of that slut. It was the opportunity Kagome had been waiting for all along. She’d gone right after Kikyo’s man disguising her true intentions as being heartbroken over the taiyoukai. It had been a pretty good deception… their friends bought it hook, line, and sinker. But Kikyo wasn’t fooled from the start.
Her boyfriend on the other hand… well, Inuyasha went straight off the deep end. His acting was great. So much so that Kikyo was starting to question her sanity on the many occasions he tried to convince her that nothing was going on between them. She almost believed him… she wanted to believe him. But one could only ignore their own eyes for so long. She almost never got to spend time with her lover. And she certainly never got any ‘loving’ after the older Taisho’s departure. Her hanyo had been too busy “consoling” his so-called best friend.
But it’s okay. She grinned wickedly, reaching for a pair of pumps. It’s my turn now… and I’m going to enjoy exposing that bitch for the whore she is. Inuyasha will have single handedly brought his father’s house tumbling down by the time I’m through.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
He’s so proud of himself. Izayoi was looking at practically every tooth in her mate’s mouth due to his enormous smile. I wonder if his face hurts…
The taiyoukai just knew he would be a top contender for a Father of the Year award. “Well?” He questioned. “What do you think?”
Dammit! He would ask me that. She tried to keep her skepticism from showing.
“This is sure to work. My sons will have a better relationship than they’ve ever had when this is done.”
His wife groaned inwardly. Here goes…
“Well… my love…” she faltered trying to put her words together. “it sounds like a really good plan…”
His smile broadened when he moved to lean toward her in anticipation.
Oh hell! The Lady of the West silently cursed. She really, really didn’t want to rain on his parade. “I’m confused about something though… you have not told Sesshomaru about his new assistant?”
To her horror, the youkai confirmed the suspicion. “No. I will speak with him tomorrow, before he gets to the office.”
She choked and her eyes bugged out, “B-but… well…” How can I put this? “He does not like surprises, darling. What if he finds out before talking to you?”
“He won’t. He is to see me first thing, before going to his floor.”
This is NOT good. “Your intentions are very noble.” If not foolhardy. She added inside her mind. “However I believe it would be best to tell him first.”
“I fully intend to-”
“You’re not giving him enough time to accept things. He is very particular. Hiring someone for his staff, a position directly connected to him, without so much as asking what he thought… well… I just don’t know.”
“Don’t worry, my love.” He gave her knee a reassuring pat. “Kikyo is just what the doctor ordered. I’m certain Inuyasha still has feelings for her… and with her working so closely to Sesshomaru, he may see his brother is not such a bad guy. I’m confident she can bridge the gap.”
Izayoi huffed. Still has feelings for her? Where is he getting his information?
She had not heard her son so much as whisper about his ex-girlfriend since their break up. And her husband’s grand plan was to count on Inuyasha and Kagome to suddenly become buddies with Sesshomaru and Kikyo… the original couples will reunite and everyone will walk off into the sunset.
Again, the Lady of the West concluded: This is not good. Not good at all.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
A/N: Thanks for reading! I’m sure you figured it out, but I’ll say it anyway – Kikyo’s reason for Sesshomaru leaving is her own person view. She’s angry, she’s bitter… & she’s about to fill his head with mayhem.
