A New Path

Chapter 10

“Are you ok?” Litara reached down to help Inuyasha to his feet. She looked concerned.

“Yeah, I’m used to it by now. She won’t have such an easy time dealing with Sesshomaru…wonder if he knows about her temper yet?” Inuyasha said.

“I think he does, she threw a fit when he left her last. He told her that she could no longer go traveling with you.” Litara replied.

Inuyasha looked extremely angry at this statement. Then he smiled. “Bet she told him a thing or two. Every time I’d try to leave her behind, she’d get angry. She’s very independent, and likes to do things her way.” He said.

Litara was thinking about her Lord’s intended. ‘Perhaps she is worthy of him. She’s proven that she is determined, and independent. However, I still haven’t seen what drew Sesshomaru’s interest in her. She still has a lot to prove to me.’

Litara and Inuyasha cleaned up the eating area, and Litara retired to the hut with her mistress, Inuyasha sat on top the hut. Litara sat on the mat next to Kagome. She needed little rest, and only slept on occasion.

The next day Kagome proved herself to Litara. A large scorpion demon attacked, and everyone was hard pressed to defeat it. Inuyasha yelled for Kagome to run again, but the little miko wasn’t going to do that again. This time Kagome stood on a low tree branch, and pulled out her bow and arrow. Sighting along the shaft of the arrow, she aimed for the scorpion’s heart. With a twang, the glowing blue arrow hit its mark. The demon was not destroyed however, it was barely even wounded. Inuyasha attacked again with the Tetsusaiga, attempting a Backlash Wave, but it was deflected by the scorpion’s shell armor. Sango’s Hiraikotsu was just as ineffective, and Naraku’s poisonous insects prevented Miroku from helping. Just before Litara decided to take part in the battle, Kagome sighted another arrow. This time, she aimed for the jewel shard in the scorpion’s forehead. “Hit the mark.” The sacred arrow pierced through the armor, and knocked the jewel out. Kagome used her priestess power to call the jewel to her, and told Inuyasha to finish the demon. One hit of the Windscar destroyed the demon, now that the power of his armor was gone.

Litara looked over at her mistress. ‘She is the one who secured this victory. She stayed here, even though it was possible that Inuyasha would lose the fight. She is very brave, and a very good shot. She is also loyal, she could easily have gone with me to a village near Lord Sesshomaru, where she would never have to worry about these responsibilities again, but she chose to come here, so she could finish what she started. She does deserve to be my Lord’s mate.’

“My Lady Kagome, you are an excellent shot with the bow. If it hadn’t been for your arrow, and Inuyasha’s sword, we would all be dead. Good job and thank you both.” Litara said.

A few weeks went by, with minor battles occurring, and many more saves by Kagome, that heightened Litara’s respect for her.

Meanwhile, Sesshomaru took time in Kagome’s absence to try to figure out why he was so attracted to the young girl. He searched restlessly through his library looking for a reason why the girl attracted him so quickly, and so deeply. What he found would astound him. He found a record of Kikyo and Kagome’s ancestry.

I am Kojo, the lowly scribe of the lord Taishou. My lord has gone out many nights now, and I have finally found where he is off to every night. My lord has begun a partnership with a local priestess. Her name is Midoriko. She is the bane of the demon world, yet my lord has taken up with her. He is one of the most respected Dog Demons of our world, second only to the Dog Demon Lord of the West.
My lord has decided to take Midoriko as his mate! He is performing the ceremony tonight. How could my great lord sink so low as this? Not only his is intended a human, she is a great priestess! This cannot turn out well.
My mistress, Lady Midoriko, is with child. The child will be female, as will all first born of that line. The girl will be called Rinka. She will be a hanyou. I am fully disgusted.

The diary went on to say how Rinka mated with another hanyou, and that child mated with a human. The line went on, through different scribes and servants that followed it, to Kikyo’s grandmother. That is when the last loyal servant died. Kikyo’s mother married a human, and had both Kikyo and Kaede. Sesshomaru followed human records to trace Kikyo to her grandmother. As Kagome was Kikyo’s reincarnation, she would have the same ancestry as Kikyo.

‘Kagome is part demon. It is quite possible that her mother or father was a demon or hanyou as well, since Kikyo’s line ends with her and Kaede. So Kagome’s parentage and her parent’s ancestry could also include demons or hanyous.’ He couldn’t look up her records because she wasn’t from this time. Oh yes, he knew her secret. He knew the minute that he traveled through time, because he could feel himself in the distance. He was simply waiting for her to tell him. It was then that he realized why he missed her so much. ‘It has been two weeks since I sent Litara to her! Litara sent many reports of their progress, so Sesshomaru looked at the latest one, and noted their location. He could have used the mark, but this was faster. He left instructions on Rin’s care with Jaken, and went to the balcony to fly to her.

He reveled in the feel of the fresh air whipping past his fur. He’d stayed cooped up in that library for a full two weeks, looking for answers. During this time, new relationships had begun, and old ones faded. He was in for a surprise when he reached his intended.
When Sesshomaru reached the group, it was night. He met Inuyasha’s challenge easily.

“Shut up little brother. I’m here to see Kagome.” He said.

“She’s asleep, and even if she was awake, you’d be lucky to get past her maid. That woman is just as infuriating as Kagome used to be.” Inuyasha muttered. Sesshomaru smirked at Inuyasha’s evaluation of Litara. Then he thought about it for a moment. ‘Inuyasha and Kagome fought like a cat and a dog when I first saw them together. Hmmm…is it possible that little Litara and Inuyasha are feeling a connection? It would be good for the pack, even if it is my hated hanyou brother.”

“I’m sure Litara will allow me to go to her. Excuse me brother.” Sesshomaru said. He walked over to where Litara was sitting. She jumped up from her position and curtsied to him.

“My lord, it pleases me to be in your presence once more I will go and stand watch with Inuyasha, as I’m sure milady will be safe here with you.” With that, the girl walked to Inuyasha, sat down, and immediately picked up their earlier argument.

Sesshomaru removed his armor and lay down next to Kagome. He pulled her back into his chest, carefully wrapping his arms around her, below the feet of the small kitsune she treasured. He made note of the fact that she slept with her ‘son’ in her arms. The mark of a truly good mother. He did not sleep, but just lay in peace with her in his arms. He felt whole again, for the first time in weeks. Also, he no longer felt that he was going crazy for loving this little human girl.

Kagome slowly woke up, and then tried to move. She was used to Shippo not being there when she woke, the little boy not needing as much sleep as she did, but she was not used to waking up in someone else’s arms. She stiffened, and opened her mouth to cry out. Sesshomaru spoke before she could say anything.

“Kagome, it’s been a long time since we were last together. I missed you.” He leaned his head down and kissed his mark on her shoulder. Closing her mouth, Kagome turned in his arms.

“Sesshomaru! I’m so glad to see you again.” She said just before he captured her mouth for a kiss. Kagome wrapped her arms around his back, and deepened the kiss by opening her mouth to him. His tongue plunged in, re-learning the path of her teeth, and the softness of her inner cheeks. When they pulled away from each other they were both dizzy from passion.

They got up and joined the others around the fire. Litara cooked again, bickering with Inuyasha the whole time. Sesshomaru and Kagome sat next to Sango, who was keeping a close eye on Miroku. The monk was relentless, creeping up behind Litara, and tightly gripping both her buttocks while blowing into her ears. Sesshomaru stiffened beside Kagome, angry that a member of his pack would be treated so badly. Kagome grabbed onto his arm.

“Relax and watch. This should be interesting.” She said.

Inuyasha was sitting right in front of Litara, so he watched the emotions playing across her face. Her face went from shocked to red, to a deep purple, to pissed. She spun around and gripped Miroku’s shoulders tightly. He looked pleased, believing that she was finally going to give in to him. Litara gave him an evil look, and brought her knee up between his legs with all her strength, using her grip on his shoulders to keep him from jumping so that the impact would be strong. Miroku gave a strangled cry, and collapsed at her feet, clutching his manhood and crying.

“I warned you Monk. Let that be a lesson to you.” She said, and then she called over to Sango, “Don’t worry, I’m sure he will still be able to father children. Remember what we spoke of Sango, it is for your attention, not mine.” Sango blushed. She did remember her conversation with Litara two weeks earlier.

“He does this to get your attention. I could see him looking at you while he spoke to me. He wants to see your jealousy, hoping that he can drive you to come to him. My father used to do the same thing with my mother. Whenever he wanted attention, he would look at other women. If you want him, you must not give him the attention when he goes after me. This will drive him nuts, instead, encourage the attention he brings to you, but try to get him to show it in another way, not by touching your butt.”

Sango blushed again, and then moved to help Miroku to his feet.

“Why Miroku, would you like me to help you, perhaps I can get some ice for your injury.” She said. Miroku looked at her in shock. ‘Sango is helping me? She isn’t angry with me for going after Litara? Perhaps she finally understands…’ He slowly limped with her to the river. It was some distance away from the camp, through the trees.

“Miroku, you know that she will only hurt you if you continue to grope her and make rude comments about her, so why do you continue to do so?” Sango asked.

“Because you pay attention to me when I do.” Miroku decided to take a chance and let Sango know how he felt. He eagerly awaited her reaction.
