Getting Started
Kagome sulked, trudging along behind her friends. She was covered in
dirt, blood, and sweat but that wasn’t the reason for her melancholy mood.
She pulled her eyes away from the path they were traveling on to look at her
friends. They were all covered in blood, dirt, and sweat, but they didn’t seem
to mind. The small smile on Sango’s face would have been undetectable to anyone who didn’t know her. Kagome could see the smile and she also noticed the look of satisfaction in Sango’s eyes. The thrill of victory shimmered in her deep brown gaze. She was physically exhausted, but her adrenalin was still coursing through her veins as she silently gloated over their victory. Miroku was also smiling but his was easy to see. Kagome watched as he looked over at Sango, love and wanting cloud his vision for a few moments before he withdrew his gaze from her. His smile spread as he savored his lewd thoughts. Love bound their group as well as the Shikon no Tama, but none of them would ever be willing to admit their feelings for one another.
Kagome’s eyes were drawn to Inuyasha. No smile graced his countenance and a look of determination and concentration contorted his features. Kagome watched as he limped slightly. She knew that he had been wounded, and she felt that it was all her fault. She averted her eyes back to the ground as tears began to well up in them. She fought her tears as images from their recent battle tore through her mind.
(Flashback)
Their small group had just emerged on the other side of Inuyasha’s Forest, when Kagome sensed two shards. A glazed, unfocused look shrouded her eyes as she told the others what she sensed. They feeling wasn’t strong but she could tell which direction they needed to head. Inuyasha being impatient as always pulled Kagome onto his back before takiff, ff, heading west, the direction Kagome pointed him in. Miroku and Sango watched as Kirara transformed before hoping on her back hoping to catch up with Kagome and Inuyasha. Kagome told Inuyasha to land after a while. She slide off his back, her mind telling her to look for the shards, but her heart aching to just hold onto him for a little while longer. She could feel the presence of the shards, but she couldn’t see any. She scanned to trees surrounding them before turning back towards Inuyasha. Her eyes widened in fear as a large bear demon jumped out of the trees behind Inuyasha. Inuyasha jumped to the side as the yaoki lunged at him. Inuyasha dove at his opponent with his claws reared back ready for battle. The demon wasn’t as quick as Inuyasha, he felt the sharp claws slash across his chest, but he knew that it wasn’t a fatal wound. He leaped at Inuyasha but his attack missed.
Kagome could see the shards now; the demon had two, one in each arm. Inuyasha hadn’t drawn Tetsiga yet, choosing a hand to hand fight. Kagome readied her bow and arrow hoping to end the battle before the demon could get his hands on Inuyasha. The demon pounced at Inuyasha, but again Inuyasha jumped to the side. Kagome had a clear shot at the demons back, she aimed and fired. Seconds after releasing her arrow the yoaki jumped to the side avoiding another attack from Inuyasha. Time seemed to slow down as Kagome watched her arrow head directly for Inuyasha. She saw his eyes widen before instinct took over as he dove to the ground. The arrow pierced a tree behind Inuyasha with a sicking split of the wood. The demon took advantage of the vulnerable moment when Inuyasha was avoiding the arrow to attack again. He sank his claws deep into Inuyasha’s left thigh. As he prepared to attack again Inuyasha unsheathed Tetsiga and jumped back. He narrowly escaped the yoaki’s claws as Tetsiga transformed. Inuyasha slashed the sword diagonally through the demon successfully ending the battle. He allowed the sword to transform back to its original state before slipping it back into its sheath. He asked Kagome where the shards were; when she didn’t answer he looked over at her. He followed her fear filled gaze and saw the arrow, her arrow, sticking out of the tree behind him. He looked back at her as her eyes feel upon his face. She stared into his amber eyes before breaking down. She slumped down to the ground as uncontrollable tears feel down her cheeks. She rocked herself, muttering how sorry she was. Inuyasha walked over and grabbed her by her shoulders leaning her back to look up at him. He again asked her where the shards were. She told him where they were and watched as he stalked back over to the demon and extracted the two pieces of jewel from its body. She fought for control while watching him; she knew how much he hated it when she cried. She wiped the moisture from her face and brought her breathing back to its normal rate. She stood and waited until Inuyasha walked back over to her, he handed her the two shards. She purified them and placed them into the small jar she wore around her neck. They didn’t speak to each other, but both realized that Miroku and Sango where no where to be seen. Inuyasha could smell another yoaki and pulled her into his arms before taking off in the direction of the other demon.
Miroku and Sango had been attacked while looking for Kagome and Inuyasha. They were fending off another attack when Kagome and Inuyasha showed up. The four of them made quick work of the small pack of yoaki and then began walking back towards Keada’s village.
(End Flashback)
Kagome’s thoughts were interrupted when Sango asked if they could stop for a while. Surprisingly Inuyasha didn’t argue and looked around for a place for them to stop for the night. After finding a suitable location, Sango and Miroku went about building a fire, gathering kindling and larger chunks of wood. Kagome had fetched a pail of water and started making ramen for dinner. After they had all eaten their fill of food, Sango and Miroku went in search of more wood, Inuyasha lay with his back against a tree, and Kagome went to bathe in the river she had gotten the water from earlier. Miroku and Sango returned and noticed that Kagome wasn’t there. Miroku asked Inuyasha if he knew where she was, Inuyasha sniffed the air for a moment before heading off in the direction her scent was coming from. Sango added some wood to the fire before spreading out the sleeping bags Kagome had given them. The physical exhaustion was finally taking over for her and Miroku. They both fell asleep next to the fire as Inuyasha went in search of Kagome.
Inuyasha followed her scent towards the river. As he broke through the line of trees he saw Kagome, wrapped in a towel with her knees pulled up to her chest. Her sobs shook her body and tears were streaming down her face. Inuyasha hated it when she cried, it was usually over something stupid he had done or said. He didn’t want to see her crying, it wrenched his heart to see her crying. He longed to comfort her, to pull her into his arms and hold her until she stopped crying. He wanted to tell her exactly how he felt, but was afraid to do so, he had his heart broke once he didn’t want it to happen again. He stepped out of the line of trees and walked over to Kagome. So wrapped up in her depression that she didn’t sense him, Kagome gasped when she felt his clawed hand gently wipe away her tears. He was crouched beside her with a sad, longing look in his eyes. The simple kindness she found in his touch broke another damn behind her eyes. After what she had almost done he was still there for her made her heart feel like breaking.
As tears streamed down her face again, she told Inuyasha how sorry she was that she never meant to put him in danger, she was aiming for the other demon but he moved….she rambled on as her face became soaked again. Inuyasha sat down and pulled her into his lap trying to soothe her. When she finally stopped talking Inuyasha looked down at her and told her that he knew she hadn’t been aiming for him. It was a mistake that several people had probably made during battle. She continued crying and told him she knew but he had been injured because of her stupid mistake. He tenderly cupped her face and told her not to cry anymore. He told her that it was just a flesh wound and that being half-demon he had already healed. Another sob raked through her body as he ed hed her back into his chest and rocked her soothingly. He soon felt her raged breaths even out as she drifted off to sleep in his arms. Her scent washed over him as she slept. He tried to lay her down but she clung to him so he just adjusted so she would sleep comfortably. He didn’t mind ing ing her; it was what he wanted to do in the first place. The fact that she felt safe and secure enough in his arms to fall asleep on him warmed his heart and was quickly pulling him into the warm recesses of sleep.
Sango awoke after sleeping for only an hour, her senses telling her something was wrong. She looked around and noticed that Inuyasha and Kagome still weren’t back yet. This thought troubled her. She stood and walked over to wake up Miroku. He awoke and stood to help her find the other two. They headed towards the river following the same path Inuyasha had taken earlier. Sango moved a few branches out of her line of vision. She stopped so suddenly that Miroku almost plowed into her hind end. She signaled for him to be quiet and pointed out to the shore of the river. Miroku looked around Sango, his jaw dropped open at the sight before him. Sango looked back at him before whapping him on the head with her balled up fist. He snapped his mouth shut and rubbed the offending lump now forming on his head. Inuyasha and Kagome were asleep on the shore wrapin ein each others arms. Inuyasha’s red haori was thrown over them like a blanket. Sango turned and walked back to camp deciding to leave her friends alone. Miroku followed her solemnly, rubbing his now throbbing head.
Inuyasha had felt fatigue pulling at his consciousness so he laid Kagome on the ground next to him while he had removed his haori. He had pulled her back into his arms as he lay down beside her before draping the haori over them both. He felt Kagome snuggle closer to him and he wrapped his arms around her protectively. Her warmth and alluring scent relaxing and lulling him into a quiet slumber. They slept for most of the night peacefully, just taking in each others warmth. Kagome began to move around restlessly in her sleep as a nightmare gripped her consciousness.
(Kagome’s Dream)
Back at the battle with the bear demon, Kagome had once again readied her bow and arrow. The demons back came into focus again as she released her arrow. The demon moved again and she saw her arrow flying straight at Inuyasha again. She felt the fear grip her heart again. But he didn’t move this time, she saw the fear in his eyes, she could hear the whistle as it sliced through the air. The sickening thud as the arrow made contact with Inuyasha’s chest, pulling him off his feet and pinning him to the tree behind him. His golden eyes locked onto hers as his life slipped from his body. Kagome could hear him quietly tell her that he loved her. Kagome screamed as pain ripped through her chest.
(End Kagome’s Dream)
Kagome sat up, her scream slicing through the air. Her sudden movement and ear piercing wail quickly brought Inuyasha out of his enticing dream. He stood looking around for any sign of impending danger, finding none he looked back down at Kagome. She had again pulled herself into a little ball and was visible shaking from head to toe. He heard her quietly repeating that she was sorry over and over again. He realized that she had a nightmare and sat down beside her pulling her out of the ball and into his arms. She wrapped her arms around him and squeezed with all her might. She continued whispering that she was sorry. Inuyasha tried to tell her everything was alright, but it wasn’t working. She buried her face in his chest still sobbing before she pulled back and looked into his eyes. She grabbed the sides of his face and placed a gentle kiss on his lips. Inuyasha was shocked to say the least but quickly got over it. He closed his eyes and responded to her sweet kiss. She withdrew from the kiss, much to Inuyasha’s disappointment, still cupping his face in her hands with her eyes still closed she told Inuyasha that she loved him and didn’t want to lose him, ever.
