Chapter 1: A Normal Day
Kagome was excited. Inuyasha had finally relented about letting her go home for a couple of days. Her cousin’s birthday was coming up soon and her mom was being overly pushy about her going to see him. It made sense though they hadn’t seen each other in a few years now. What with her time travel and him… well whatever he did. He did seem to disappear a lot though. Oh well, anyways so once they got the shard from whatever was hiding in this cave up ahead then they would head back to take her home. Yay!
Kagome was startled out of her thoughts by Inuyasha’s shouting. “Get back here you brat!” Seems Shippo was playing tricks again. Oh! Now Kagome couldn’t help but laugh, seeing Shippo had tied one of Sango’s hair ties in a bow right on top of Inuyasha’s head. It was just too funny.
Inuyasha rounded on her. “What you think this is funny wench! I’ll beat the shit out of that little brat!”
“Inuyasha! You will not lay a hand on my kit!” Kagome was mad now. “And don’t you use that kind of language around him. He’s still a kid and that’s not the kind of thing I want him learning.”
“What ya gonna do about it wench!” Inuyasha yelled back. It didn’t take him long though to notice the look on her face though, and he was exceedingly happy when the argument was interrupted by a loud roar that echoed through the forest. Inuyasha quickly drew Tetsusiaga and braced himself for the encounter. Miroku and Sango taking up defensive stances in front of Kagome prepared to do battle. Kagome was just readying her bow and arrow as a huge bear youkai came barreling out of the cave. With a mighty roar it ran straight at Inuyasha.
“There’s a shard in its left paw!” Kagome shouted as Inuyasha took his first swing. Amazingly the bear youkai blocked the blow with its left arm and knocked Inuyasha back a step. Before it lunged in trying to take a bite of him too. Inuyasha dodged the bears teeth and as he jumped out of the way Sango swung her Hiraikotsu at the beast while it was distracted by Inuyasha. Her blow hit it’s mark and the bear let out an outraged howl as it fell.
After a moment of quiet Shippo peaked his head out from Kagome’s backpack where he had been hiding. “Is it dead?” he asked quietly. “Yes Shippo it’s over. You can come out now.” Kagome said cheerfully to encourage her son as she walked over to the bear to take back the shard.
“Got it!” she called as she pulled the shard out of the bears arm. Just as she stood up though the bear gave one final lurch and swung the other paw at Kagome. “Ah!” Kagome reacted quickly, but not quite quick enough to fully avoid the swinging claws. Inuyasha was already leaping through the air and cleanly cut the bears head from its shoulders.
“Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry Kagome. I thought it was dead.” Sango said as she rushed over to tend to the new set of claw marks on Kagome’s forearm. “These look deep, we need to treat this right away.”
“It’s alright Sango, we all assumed it was dead. And it’s not that bad, just grab me my first aid kit from my bag.” Kagome smiled as she sat down on a nearby rock to tend the wound. “It looks worse than it is. I just need to clean off the blood and bandage it and it’ll be fine.” Kagome tended her wound quickly. “It’s getting late, we should start heading back and make camp in that clearing we saw about an hour ago. That’ll get us far enough from the smell of the blood so we don’t have to worry about it drawing anything nasty to us.” Mostly she just wanted to get closer to home.
