Whatever May Come
A/N: This story is an xover, between Inuyasha and Bleach, I haven't seen many so I thought what the hell. This fic is mainly for my own amusement since I want to try something new. I'm an unsure of the pairings at the moment, yes, if a reader takes the time to review I will consider any suggestions or options for the pairings. Also, if someone does feel the need to give a low rating, please have the courtesy to leave a review/comment and let me know why you felt the need to do so. An author cannot improve or correct mistakes if they aren't pointed out. Also don't click on the link and leave a flame or low rating just b/c you don't like the fandoms or the pairings suggested. Go elsewhere if this isn't what you want to read. Thank you and I hope those that are interested in seeing this kind of xover enjoy.
Warnings: Language, Angst, Sexual Content, Oral, Death, Violence, and slight spoilers.
Chapter One
The pain from the jagged wound across her shoulder didn’t compare to the echoing ache that had settled deep in her soul. Months of traveling and it had come to this. There would be no grand victory, but a hollow one filled with much sorrow. Kagome ignored the blood seeping from the cut made by none other than Inuyasha. The final battle had begun and they were fighting inside the creature Naraku had become. Ironic that the demon had despised the mark of Onigumo, a spider, and that was exactly what he’d become once merged with the jewel.
Up above Sesshoumaru fought along side the brother he swore to hate. Thankfully Rin, Jaken and Kohaku were safely out of harms way. It was a shame she couldn’t say the same for herself and two others. Miroku was still holding his own while trying to fight off the poison threatening to end his life. Glancing at the houshi brought Kagome’s attention towards the tiajiya trying desperately to stand. Her friend had given her mask to the small girl, leaving Sango vulnerable to the toxic fumes.
Without waiting to see if she was needed, the miko stumbled over to where the couple stood. She was almost out of arrows and if she wanted to help, it meant waiting for the right moment to strike. “Sango!”
“I’ll make it,” Sango clenched her fist, feeling better that she had her weapon back at hand. Neither called her on the lie and she was grateful. The last thing they needed was the miko to focus on her instead of the real danger. The inu brothers were fighting desperately to destroy Naraku and at this rate she wasn’t going to be any help. “Go, don’t worry about me.”
“Kagome, stay with her.” Miroku could feel the effects of the miasma running in his veins but it wouldn’t be enough to hinder him. Seeing the miko place a supporting hand upon his woman’s shoulder he felt confidant enough to leave them. They were both capable of dealing with things alone for a few minutes.
“Alright,” Kagome wasn’t sure if she could do anything to help the taijiya. Even now her power was draining and she’d be lucky if it was enough to purify the jewel. Inuyasha had accidently attacked her due to Naraku’s influence and with Sesshoumaru’s help she’d been able to find him again to break him of the spell. Now her hanyou was fighting a battle he would most likely lose. Informing him that she’d lied about how bad the damage was would only cause him added grief and distraction. “You don’t look so good.”
“Neither do you. That is not a flesh wound.” Sango could smell the blood and it was too dark to be a scratch. However the girl had come upon the injury had to been severe; it almost looked like claw marks. “We need to stop the bleeding.”
“We don’t have time, I’ll make it.” Now who did she sound like? The miko tried to smile but a wave of dizziness made her sway to the left. Things had to end soon or she would be in a sad state.
“Kagome, behind you,” the warning came too late. Sango shouted as the strange pink mass stretched out towards them. Moving quickly, she swung Hiraikotsu around to meet the flesh head on. The impact had her being shoved backwards, Kagome behind her with an arrow drawn. She was too weak to keep the force from pushing them back.
“Be careful,” Kagome fired the arrow into another section of wall that had come to life and tried to surround them. It did the trick, a bright flash of light and it was gone. The victory was short lived as two more sections broke free to circle around them. They were blocked in, “Can we get out?”
“I…..” she tried to think but it was hard. Kirara was too far away and to call the neko would endanger her brother. Jumping back a step enabled her to swing the weapon down and cut through. As soon as it descended the opening reclosed, the attempt had been futile and the mass was now too high for them to jump over.
“Up there!” Kagome yelled in a state of panic. Above them another stretch shot forward, completely encasing them in the tomb. With it came the darkness, she couldn’t see anything. A cry from the right came from the taijiya. “Sango?”
Something solid impacted against her chest, sending her flying. Sango was glad when the air no longer rushed by her and her spine collided with a surface. Her lungs tried to draw in a harsh breath, with it came searing pain. The air itself was burning her mouth and lungs, making it hard to breathe. Having no use for her eyes, they were snapped shut to keep the stinging down to a minimum.
“I got you,” Kagome felt the cold surface of Hiraikotsu beneath her knees, she sat down on it. Cold, sweaty hands reached out to her in a panic. Would Inuyasha hear it, if she tried to call for him? Right now she had to concentrate on the miasma seeping inside with them. “Hold on, I’ll try to hold it off.”
“It is futile,” the voice came from above. Naraku stared down at the two females he’d so easily caught in his trap. As usual Inuyasha had been so set on attacking that he’d let his attention be diverted. The hanyou had no clue as to what was about to take place or why he’d allowed them so close to the jewel.
“Kago….” It hurt to do anything. Sango opened her eyes but there was nothing. Thin arms wrapped around her shoulders in an attempt to keep the poison at bay. There was too much, she could taste it with each gasp of air.
“It’ll be fine. Inuyasha will get us out.” It was a desperate hope, one she had a feeling that would be crushed. Kagome coughed now becoming aware of just how strong it was getting. The most her powers could do was keep their bodies from being destroyed but it was thickening as the seconds passed.
“If that will make it easier to bear then lie to her. Ease her last moments with false hope,” Naraku cackled hearing the erratic beating of the taijiya’s heart. It was only a matter of time as to which one would die first. The blood still leaked from the wound Inuyasha had caused, the poison causing it to flow faster.
“Naraku! What have you done?” Kagome demanded, trying to buy a few precious minutes in order for Inuyasha and the others to get to them. It was apparent that they’d fallen into a trap meant to separate them. It would cause Inuyasha and Miroku worry and with their concentration divided it’d be easier to kill them.
“I have brought you here to end this. Do not disillusion yourself or her, there is no escape. Another minute Sango will have succumbed to the poison and moments later your life’s blood will stain her corpse. All is lost, what will you do?” Naraku couldn’t believe how easy it’d been to catch the miko, getting the taijiya had been a bonus.
Kagome blinked in confusion at the question. Not far above them resting in the mass was the shikon-no-tama. Was he teasing her, playing with her hopes of purifying it? Her bow was at hand but she wasn’t foolish enough to believe he’d allow her to get to it.
Naraku waited patiently as the miko debated on what to do. What they didn’t realize is that he’d already tried to make his wish and it had been denied. What he wished for more than anything had been Kikyou’s love but that wasn’t something that the shikon-no-tama could grant him. Since he couldn’t have Kikyou and there was nothing left for him by being alive, he had asked for something else. The moment Kagome made her wish then he’d get the next best thing. He and the miko would take the place of the demon and Midoriko that battled inside the jewel. For eternity, Kagome would be stuck with him because once she was gone there would be no one else alive with the power to purify it. As soon as the wish was made their lives would cease to exist.
“Ka….me….” she was so cold. Sango could make out the soft sound of weeping. Was that Kagome? Darkness swam before her and the eerie silence was deafening. Was she dying? Arms and legs had ceased to have any feeling and the sensation of falling frightened her. ‘Why? Why did it have to happen like this?’ Just when she had Kohaku back and the chance at a future with Miroku, she was to die inside the bowels of her enemy. How she hated him, this was all his doing. All her life demons had been the cause of strife and suffering, all for the accursed jewel. “Kagome, I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s going to be okay.” Tears burned her cheeks and she didn’t try to stop them. The miko in her tried to purify the lingering mist but it was of no use. With a gurgling cough the taijiya in her arms shuddered. “Rest, when you wake up you’ll be in a wonderful place. You’ll see, it’ll be okay.”
Sango liked the sound of that, the idea had merit. To wake in a place where she could be happy would be wonderful. If she could believe that then dying wouldn’t be so terrible, not if it meant going to a better place. The hand on her palm tightened trying to bring comfort. There was no hope for her or Kagome now, they would die together. “I wish we could go to a place where there are no demons or shikon-no-tama.”
“NO!” Naraku growled in rage and despair as the words slipped from the taijiya’s dying lips. Without considering the circumstances he sent a tentacle towards the pair. The only one that made a sound from the blow was the pathetic miko. Blood sprayed forth, hitting him in the chest. Light surrounded all three, but only he noticed. Even as the form that was once Kagome slumped forward Naraku could feel the magic encasing him, pulling him towards the unknown.
“It’s beautiful,” Kagome loved the feel of the sun’s heat basking her face. It was days like this that she didn’t mind her fate. A blade of grass was plucked from the soft earth to find its way between her lips. A pathetic noise was made as she blew against it. “I can never get it to work.”
“Because you suck,” Sango didn’t bother to get up from her position on the ground. Her nap had been going good until her companion felt the need to start running off at the mouth. She preferred to enjoy what time they had here before they were forced to vacate. Another decade, another town, more loneliness and there was nothing she could do about it.
“Someone is in a foul mood. How about we go see a movie?” Kagome turned towards the taijiya bearing a sad face. This was the life; they could do whatever they wanted and not deal with the problems of every day life.
Over five hundred years had passed since they’d woken up together in an overgrown meadow. The Japan that they both knew no longer existed but one that wasn’t much different. Two major things were missing; the presence of demons and the shikon-no-tama. Without these, there was no Inuyasha or Miroku and even they didn’t really exist. Kagome wasn’t sure if they were ghosts or mere spirits wondering around aimlessly. From what she’d always believed when someone died their soul went to the afterlife. They were dead but still experienced much the same as when they were alive. Without food they went hungry and needed to rest, plus most of the bodily functions were still present.
“I’m not in the mood,” Sango didn’t want to sit around and watch a bunch of teenagers make out. It was the weekend so it would happen regardless of which film they chose. Centuries was a long time to mourn the loss of a life she’d never have. Not that she resented this outcome because she was dead. If this hadn’t happened she’d have died in her own world. Fate had decided she was not to have a live with the houshi. What kept her going was, believing that the world she’d left behind was a better one. It was a world that Kohaku had grown up in strong and proud; a place where she no longer belonged.
“I knew it was too good to last,” Kagome groaned as the loud growling echoed through the trees. She’d already slapped Sango for not being specific with the damn wish. Sure there were no demons but that didn’t mean trouble didn’t find them. Creatures that living people couldn’t see roamed the living world.
“You can get this one. I’m going to get my nap out.” Sango rolled over and tucked her hand underneath her head. Another one of those damn things was near, which meant it’d find it’s way to them soon enough.
“That’s rather lazy of you, I got the last one.” The miko was already standing up bow in hand. This world was a lot different from their own, in many ways. Upon waking their weapons had been gone. It wasn’t until the first creature had come along that another strange occurrence presented itself. Kagome had desired the use of her weapon and it had come to her. It wasn’t the same bow she’d died with but worked well with her. Hiraikotsu hadn’t changed much but for the edges.
“Lair, I got the one in the park. Just because I got it as soon as it appeared doesn’t make it void.” The taijiya rolled onto her side, to send the other female a disbelieving frown. “It was your idea to come to this city. We’ve only been here a month and that has to be the nine-hundredth Masker we’ve seen.”
“You agreed to come here, so don’t blame me.” Kagome was the one to give the creatures the name. Each one had a strange mask of sorts that was their weakness. Well, it was their weakness for Sango she could strike them anywhere.
“I will blame you, who the hell walked up to the map and pointed?” The taijiya had thought it funny when Kagome had strolled up to the paper map and pointed. The slender finger had centered on a large city by the name of Karakura Town. Being bored with the overly populated Tokyo they had set out to explore once more.
“Fine, I’ll go get it,” They had to do something or it would be coming to greet them shortly. She didn’t feel like it but even here life wasn’t always peaceful. Kagome made sure to nudge Sango in the ass with the tip of her foot. “Why don’t you come with me? After we get done we can go fetch something to eat.”
“It’s gone,” Rukia was sure that the damn thing was busted. The last time hollows had appeared and vanished so quickly was when Ishida had been roaming around without their knowledge. As far as she knew there wasn’t another shinigami roaming the city. They’d left Ishida at the school to take care of the hollow. This was her permanent position with Ichigo as a partner to help her out.
“What a waste of time!” Ichigo didn’t even have time to take out his zanpakuto. What the hell was going on? They were to expect regular hollow appearances these days. Everything had been settled with Aizen four years ago. His life was as normal as could be for a substitute shinigami.
“Perhaps I should bring this to the Seireitei’s attention. See if they are getting the readings as well; just in case we are missing something.” Rukia placed the communicator back inside her pocket. For a brief second she thought she’d felt a flicker of foreign energy but it had come and gone so quickly she couldn’t be sure.
“Should we head back?” Ichigo didn’t trust Ishida to keep the professor from questioning his whereabouts for too long. His body was lying on the bathroom floor. Wanting to stay in the human world for as long as possible he was living a life here. A human life meant college, a job, and dating.
“Yes, before Orihime gets wind of you rushing out.” Rukia grumbled low under her breath. She envied her friend the closeness that Ichigo shared with their friend. How long had it been since she’d had an opportunity to speak to Renji? When would she find someone special in her life? A part of her still wanted to try with her childhood friend but circumstances were keeping them apart.
Even Chad had found someone to spend time with. The only one that was single was her and Ishida. If she wanted someone in her life she’d have to resort to finding another shinigami. There were plenty of single males in the Seireitei but none would think to approach her. There were also her unrequited feelings for a certain redhead.
“Hmph,” that was a reminder he didn’t need. Ichigo was trying to work on his relationship but things were stressful. The relationship was ideal for him. Before Orihime he’d tried to date a girl he worked with but that had ended in a disaster. It’d be hard to find a woman that could accept his weird schedule or that’d he’d be able to share both aspects of his life with.
“Want to come with me or return to school?” Rukia could sense the tension in her comrade. After years of being together, they knew each other well. She had to see about getting her equipment fixed, now was as good as time as any.
“I got to head back. Let me know if you find out anything.” Ichigo sighed and turned his gaze towards the setting sun. A shiver ran down his spin, a warning? “Are you going to tell them about the spark of reitsu?”
“If that was reitsu, its one I’ve never felt before. It was too fast to get a good feel for it.” Rukia was glad she wasn’t the only one that had noticed it. “Don’t tell anyone yet until I’ve returned. It might not be anything to worry about.”
Ichigo didn’t agree but wouldn’t mention it until she returned. There was no pointing it out to the others until they knew what they were dealing with. After Aizen he wasn’t going to overlook anything that might be a threat. “Just don’t take too long.”
