City of Devils.
A/N: I had this idea for an original novel a few years back, but I didn't ever think that it could make it. So I'm converting it into an Inuyasha fanfiction story. I think it'll be way more appreciated on here. Anyways, this is my very first songfic; it's to the song, "City of Devils" by Yellowcard. Here's the full summary:
Inuyasha was dying of a strange, terminal disease that was so rare there was no name for it. He went through countless experiments until the doctors and scientists finally decided to put him into cryogenic hibernation until they could come up with a cure for it. He ends up sleeping for six centuries, and he's woken by a team of rescuers to find that the entire world is deserted and that most everyone is dead. They bring him with them to the only remaining city, deep underground. Pretty soon, he and a young soldier named Kagome find themselves caught up in a battle for the salvation of the planet and for each other's affection.

One: Man Once Sang to Me
The last thing he remembered was her scent. She smelled like lilac most of the time; it was one of the things that distracted him from the painful experiments they conducted on him. He was a willing participant in them, of course; he wanted to get better.
When Inuyasha left that last day, he'd checked himself out in the mirror. His appearance had changed so much through the last couple years since he'd checked into Dr. Higurashi's experimental program. His violet eyes had slowly turned a deep, amber color. He'd somehow grown fangs in his mouth and white dog's ears on the top of his head. As he'd studied himself, he'd thought about the good doctor. She was a tall, striking woman, with ivory skin, a sharp nose, and light pink lips. She usually wore her long, wavy, ebony hair in a tight ponytail, and she always regarded him with a warm look in her deep, chocolate-brown eyes.
When he opened his eyes, he stared up into those deep brown eyes again. But the face... the face around those eyes was slightly different. Sure, the long, wavy hair was the same, and the pink lips, and the small, upturned nose... but she smiled softly at him, and her eyes held the same warmth. But his nose filled with the scent of... not lilac, but fire. Burning. He tried to sit up, but the young woman reached forward to push him back down. "Stay there for just a moment," she murmured, and when she pressed her hands against his chest and leaned close to him, he noticed her true scent, the one beneath the burning and the fire. She had that hint of lilac he remembered so vividly, but she also smelled of sage and sunflowers.
He fought the urge to whimper when she pulled away, and her scent disappeared. He focused on his steady breathing and looked up at the ceiling. Strange, he thought. I don't remember the ceiling looking so... black. Curious, he sat up, slowly but determinedly. He looked around, still a little dazed. The room around him looked like it had exploded. He heard gunshots in the distance. The OR tables were shoved against a wall, and there were papers flying everywhere. A fierce wind blew through the room, and he looked over to see the girl... the girl that looked just the good doctor, running toward him, clutching her gun to her chest. She was yelling something to him, but he couldn't hear, not over the roaring in his ears.
He stared at her, and she stared back at him with her widened, brown eyes. She had stopped, he realized vaguely; he wondered why she stopped. There was... something poking through her torso, blood pooling around it on her thin, dark blue shirt. She was breathing heavily, almost panting, and she grabbed his hand and yanked him out of the casket-like container. "Let's go," she finally mumbled.
Three more men dressed in heavy armor like the girl's came running up to them. They observed Inuyasha for a moment, then turned their attention to the girl. She gestured to Inuyasha. "He's the only one left here," she told them. They nodded, holding their guns so they pointed away from the strange-looking man.
One of the men watched the girl closely. "Your orders?" he asked her.
"Let's get him the hell out of here," she said, and the five of them started for the door, the small girl taking Inuyasha by the arm. He tugged and pulled from her a little, but she wouldn't give; she was a strong thing. He was more than a little surprised at her strength, but he guessed that that was why she was the boss of these grown men. When they got outside, things were just as bad outside as they'd been inside; the place was in ruin outside, and Inuyasha felt as through the entire town was also. A helicopter was already going, its blades spinning wildly above them, nearly blowing them away. The girl pulled Inuyasha toward the open door of the chopper.
"What in the hell is going on?" Inuyasha asked as they loaded into the chopper. "Where's Dr. Higuarashi?"
The girl gaped at him. "How do you know Kikyo?" she asked him.
He blinked back, instantly confused. "Kikyo?" he asked. "Who the hell is Kikyo? No, I'm talking about Midoriko. Dr. Midoriko Higurashi."
The girl's expression brightened considerably. "Oh!" she excalimed. "Ok, well, here I am!" She stuck her hand out to him to shake.
Inuyasha could only stare at her.
She blinked, and the bright smile slipped away. "Well, I'm not EXACTLY Midoriko... but I'm close!" She sighed and then smiled gently at him. "I'm Kagome. Lieutenant Kagome Higurashi."
Inuyasha nodded, shaking her hand. "I get it now," he said. "You're her... sister? Daughter? I must've been asleep a while."
Kagome laughed quietly. "You're funny," she told him. He scowled at her a little. "Well, I definitely don't mean to be," he told her.
She shook her head, still smiling. "I'm sorry," she replied. "I didn't mean anything by it. It's just..." She glanced at the men, who seemed to be purposefully looking away. She licked her lips a little nervously and turned back to face Inuyasha. "You're Inuyasha Taisho, am I right?" When he nodded, she continued, "Our files that we have back at the labs indicate that you've been asleep for going on six hundred years."
She wasn't at all surprised when he just stared at her, openmouthed.
"Your parents are gone," she went on. "Your job, your friends, your crappy coworkers... it's all gone."
Inuyasha blinked, looking around, breathing heavily in his disbelief. He gripped one of the bars above them so hard his knuckles turned white. He couldn't believe it. Then something occurred to him. "What about my..."
The small soldier girl looked confused for a moment, but then realization dawned in her deep brown eyes. "Oh. You mean your illness? Yea, still haven't come up with a name for that one."
He swallowed audibly. Then he cried out in a surprise when she stabbed him in the arm with a syringe and pushed the plunger. His arm went numb for a moment, and then he felt... better. He could breathe better, he could hear better... he could see better. Inuyasha looked Kagome right in the eye and smiled at her. She smiled back at him and tilted her head a little to the right. "We couldn't figure out a name for it, but we did find the cure." She blinked and giggled a little. "Which I just gave to you. Obviously."
He nodded. Inuyasha barely knew her, here in this bleak, strange future that he knew nothing about. But he wanted to know her better.
So far, he had one friend.

A/N: I know, not the best first chapter, but it will definitely get better. Mind you, things in this fic are NOT what they seem. That's what I love about what I'm about to write for you, this entire songfic. And it'll seem a little drawn out... but oh well. You'll just have to deal. Nyah.
