Call Center Romance
Inuyasha sighed as he leaned over the counter at Marianna Ace Hardware. He was bored beyond all reason. Between stocking shelves, cleaning all of the automotive department and the fourteen customers he had all day, it was STILL only five hours into his eight hour shift. Boredom is a cruel mistress; he had even taken yellow and blue highlighters to his beautiful silver hair.
The door swung open and Inuyasha quickly jumped up and tried to look busy. He did not fool the man who entered.
“ Do I pay you to stand there and color your hair with highlighters?” asked the man who opened the door.
“No sir, you don’t but I’ve done all I can think to do and there has been NO business today.” Inuyasha grumbled. The man was Hank Porter, the sporting goods manager at Marianna Ace Hardware. He also ran the schedules and was an incomparable asshole, by Inuyasha reckoning.
“Well you couldn’t have done everything, clean the shelves in sporting goods.” Hank said in a nasty tone.
“Did those yesterday.” Inu replied
“Hardware?”
“Thursday.”
“Lawn and Garden?”
“This morning.”
“Paint?”
“Friday.”
Hank was at a loss, he did not truly believe that everything was done, so he suggested an alternative. “Well, the area that was done the longest ago needs redone, so redo it. The next time I catch you up here doing nothing, I’ll write you up.”
Inuyasha went into the back room and got a rag and warm water bucket, grumbling all the way. ‘ I need a better job, there has to be something else I can do for minimum wage.’
Just then, Tim, the sporting goods man, came into the back room after finishing with a customer. “Hey Inu, what’s shaking?”
“At the moment my nerves, why does Hank have to be such an ass? He only comes in two days a week and when he does he’s only here for an hour or so. Why the hell doesn’t someone tell HIM he’s not earning his pay? And he makes MORE than minimum wage!”
Tim smiled and clapped Inuyasha on the back. “Yeah, that’s how old peckerhead works, he runs us like mules while he complains how hard it is to sit on your ass and type for an hour a day. You know, there is still a sign on that call center that says they’re hiring, you may want to check it out.”
Inuyasha grinned in response, “I may just do that.”

When Karen showed up at five, Inuyasha was just finishing the remaining paint shelves.
“Lemme guess, Hank?” Karen said when she saw the rag, bucket and dust mask Inuyasha had in his possession.
“Yep, went on a rampage when he found out I’d done everything. Tim said the call center still looks like it’s hiring, I figured tomorrow I would run up and check it out. Wanna go?” He asked as he removed his cash drawer and went to go count down.
Karen shook her head, “And give up all this?” She gestured at the store before them. Inuyasha laughed heartily as he climbed up to the office to count down his drawer.
*The Next Morning*
Inuyasha woke to the sound of his alarm, hitting the snooze button before remembering his plans for the day. On his ONE day off, he was going to put in an application at the call center in Greensville, everyone said they paid well and that the work wasn’t hard. He just wanted more than minimum wage.
Having been on his own since his mother passed, the low income apartment he had was nearly a godsend. One bedroom, living/dining room, kitchen, and bath, bare essentials for a bare salary. He didn’t have cable, was lucky to have a TV which someone had given him as it had no remote. His buddies had chipped in to buy him a DVD player last Christmas and he had a few movies to watch, mostly he read. To look at him you wouldn’t think it , but Inu was an avid reader. His current obsession was for crime novels, all the ones he could get his hands on, every week at the library so he knew the pages by name. His books and his radio were his salvation, otherwise, he had no life. Hard to be a hanyou in such a small town, Hank had hired him because he knew the man could find no other work. Inuyasha didn’t think he was doing so badly, at 20 he was living on his own, paying his bills and making it work. But lord, did he HATE his job. In addition to Hank being a slave driver, he had to deal with Jethro in shipping, who was ALWAYS finding fault with something Inu was doing. And Jane, the Register manager, who was forever regaling him with stories of her MANY illicit affairs. The worst was Ren, the paint manager. Ren was a preacher and let EVERYONE know it, he was the most vocal man in the bunch and he REALLY got on one’s nerves, quickly.
Thinking on these things, Inuyasha showered and got into his closet to pull out a seldom worn suit. He had picked it up on an excursion to the second hand shop, it was brand new, black with silver pinstripes, and it made him look very dashing. He pulled his silver mane into a ponytail and then finished dressing. A shot of cologne and glance in the mirror later, he was on his way out the door to his baby blue 91 Chevrolet Cavalier. An old car to be sure, but it still ran, though everyday he had more and more problems with it.
As he took Tim’s directions, he lost himself in thought, wondering what it would be like to work in a call center. He had other jobs, fast food, reception, other cashiering positions, but nothing like this. Especially in this area where being a hanyou was so rare, Youkai were okay, but Hanyou were almost never seen. Most everyone who lived in the area had been born there, no one ever seemed to leave. But when his mother had gotten the urge to go somewhere she just went. College students always got the shit jobs anyway, especially those who took few courses with undecided majors.
Inuyasha pulled into the parking lot of Calltech about thirty minutes later. Walking to the main office, he steeled himself for the application process. Inuyasha took a deep breath, let it out and opened the door.
Well, just a start but I would like to know what you think… please review and let me know. This is like Inuyasha living a normal everyday life in Backwoods Pennsylvania. So just let me know what you like and don’t and most of all, tell me what I can improve.
Thanks
Holly
