The Nerd

Not really bad enough to be rated ‘R’ but since it’s the lowest there is here you go. Not my usual type of writing but my daughters and their friends liked it. They said it was funny so I decided to share.

Chapter One

“No this can’t be happening!” Kagome hissed as she stared at the blank screen before her. She reached over and pushed the button once more. The fan turned on, the lights flashed but nothing came up on the screen except the bios flash. She frowned even more. “Damn it.” She muttered as she stood to check all her connections. The serge protector was plugged in securely and the indicator light was on so it was getting electricity. As an after thought she glanced at her digital clock and found it was on so that meant the electric was fine. She moved the plug to another connection on the serge protector just in case and pushed the button on her computer to give it yet another try but the operating system didn’t start. She was ready to slam her fist into the side of the case when her phone began ringing. Frustrated she grabbed the receiver. “What?” She growled out.

“Wow did you have a bad night or what?” Her friend Sango replied. Kagome covered her eyes with her hand feeling a bad for yelling at her friend like that.

“I’m sorry Sango. It’s just my stupid computer won’t turn on this morning and I don’t know what to do.” Kagome admitted sheepishly. There was a pause from the other side and she thought she heard muffled voices.

“Did you check to make sure it was plugged in?” Sango asked.

“Yeah of course I did. That’s not the problem. It turns on but nothing comes up on the screen except the bios flash thingy. I don’t know what is wrong with it and I can’t afford to take it in to be fixed. Besides that my term paper is on it. I have to turn it in on Monday. That doesn’t give me enough time to get all that information again and if I don’t hand in that paper I fail. That means another 3 months of listening to Professor Takamura drawling on about ancient history. I don’t think I can sit through that again but I need it for my degree.” She groaned defeated. Again there was a pause while there was talking in the back ground.

“Well I know this guy that might be able to help you.” Sango said after a short bit. “I don’t know exactly what all he knows about computers but I know he is taking it as a secondary and belongs to the computer club.” Sango added blandly. Kagome held back a giggle at the sound in her voice. Sango hated computers even more then she did but they were a part of life.

“Oh that would be great!” Kagome beamed with excitement. “When can he come over?” She asked looking around the room trying to think of how long it would take her to clean up.

“Well duh!” Sango exclaimed while rolling her eyes. “I haven’t talked to him yet to find out if he will do it. Give me about an hour to track him down and I’ll call you later.” Sango said with a giggle. Kagome flushed embarrassed over what she was thinking.

“Oh yeah, sorry.” She said softly. “I’ll talk to you then.” She blushed and hung up the phone. ‘Kami, I’m such and idiot.’ She thought to herself as she went to make her a cup of coffee.

Kagome stood over the shoulder of the guy as he worked on her computer with baited anticipation. She couldn’t help but notice how cute he was but Sango didn’t seemed to like him at all. She kept glaring at him every time he turned to look at her. It didn’t matter to her, she knew Sango could handle her self. All she cared about was getting that term paper then she would think about getting a new computer after break with her next school loan installment. She couldn’t complain. This computer was a gift from her mother almost 5 years ago when she started high school and it had been the best investment her mother did. It was probably time to let it die in piece but she needed just this one last thing then she would let it go.

“Damn.” The guy, Miroku, muttered with a small frown on his lips. Kagome’s heart felt like it was in her throat. “Well hell.” He muttered more as he leaned forward reading something on the screen that she didn’t understand. He sat back in her plush office chair, a gift to herself when she started college since she knew she would be spending a lot of time there, and turned to look at her. He smiled a bit then took her hand in his. She looked with hope in her eyes that made this harder for him to say. “Well, I think you got a virus of some sort. You probably picked it up from some site on the internet.” He told her. She sat back and looked at him with a perplexed expression.

“But I don’t use the net for anything except college sites to get information for my classes.” She stared at the computer like it was a foreign object in her room.

“Are you sure?” He looked back at the screen. “This particular one is usually found on...” he cleared his throat, “umm...I’m not saying you go to places like that but it’s just....” his face flushed as she stared back at him with innocent grey eyes. He glanced over at Sango who was still glaring at him. He gulped nervously.

“It’s usually where?” Kagome asked oblivious to what he was implying.

“Kami, Kagome. You are so naive sometimes.” Sango snorted. “He’s saying you go on porn sites.” She rolled her eyes at the shocked look on Kagome’s face.

“I would never!” Kagome yelled. Her grey eyes flared with anger that was pretty scary to Miroku. He put up his hands in defense.

“I’m sure you don’t fair maiden but someone did.” He cringed at the fist that was hovering over his head. “It was merely an observation. I didn’t mean to imply anything by it. But facts are facts and that is the most common place one would get this particular type.” Kagome seemed to be assessing this information as she lowered her fist and sat back down on the edge of her bed. “The main thing is that it has corrupted the boot up sector of your operating system.” He went on to explain now that she was calmer. She was staring off into space but her eyes snapped back to his when he said that.

“So can you fix it?” She asked with renewed hope in her blue eyes. He rubbed the back of his neck with a small frown on his face.

“Alas, I’m not that good.” He admitted sourly. Kagome slumped over as the tears began to form in her eyes. Miroku began to panic. “Don’t cry sweet maiden.” He said as he reached forward to comfort her. “It will be alright. This is just a small set back.” He added as he patted her back gently. “I know many fine fellows in the computer science building that might be able to help you. So don’t give up hope.” She looked up at him with watery eyes and nodded.

“Thank you for coming over so quickly. I don’t know what I will do if I can’t get it fixed.” Kagome sniffled. “I’ll pay you back somehow.” She smiled weakly at him. He grinned sideways as his hand slipped from her back and moved slowly down ward.

“Well there is something you can help me with fair sweet Kagome.” His dark blue eyes bore into hers seductively. She raised an eyebrow at him and leaned back as he leaned forward. “Will you do me the honor or bearing my children?” He said huskily and that is when she felt the audible patting of his hand on her back side.

“Hentai!” She screeched and smacked him as hard as she could. He was flung from the chair to land with his face skidding across her wooden floor with a groan. Sango burst into laughter.

“I warned you perv.” She turned her attention back to the angry girl who was standing over Miroku with a death glare in her eyes. “You gonna be ok?” She asked soothingly and hugged Kagome to calm her down. Said girl nodded as she relaxed in her friends arms.

“This isn’t fair. I spent 3 damn months preparing for this. It was a good paper. A guaranteed ‘A’ I know it.” She sobbed slightly.

“I know, I know.” Sango placated her emotions as she rubbed her back. “I know he’s a perv but if he said he will do his best to help then he will.” She added as she watched Miroku pull himself off the floor and dust himself off. She grimaced at the bright red hand print on his cheek but he did ask for it. “Well we gotta go.” She pulled away from Kagome and set her on the edge of her bed. “Look talk to Takamura tomorrow and see if he will give you an extension. Explain what happened. Miroku can back you up on it.”

“Yeah sure no problem.” Miroku mumbled as he touched the hand print on his cheek gingerly. “I’ll explain about the virus and...” Kagome’s eyes grew as large as saucers.

“Oh no you won’t. That is the last thing I need him to know. He’ll think I’m looking at porn sites instead of doing my work and now conveniently have a virus that won’t let me get my term paper from the computer.” She snapped.

“I see your point.” Miroku stepped back from the angry girl. “Well if you need me to confirm that you can’t get into your computer.” He said but held up his hand when Kagome opened her mouth. “But I won’t mention a virus. Sango can confirm you had a paper to hand in so maybe he will give you more time.” Kagome’s anger deflated some as she thought about it.
“Yeah maybe. He isn’t that much of an asshole.” She confirmed with a smile.

“Ms. Higurashi you had 3 months to get this paper done. I don’t see why I should give you an extension when the rest of the class did their work and handed theirs in on time. If I give you a break then I would feel obligated to give everyone a break.” Professor Takamura said blandly as his eyes scanned over some papers on his desk. Kagome glared down at the top of his bald head hatefully.

‘Asshole.’ She fumed in her mind but put on a smile to cover up her anger. “Yes I know Professor Takamura but my computer crashed last night just after I finished it. My friend Sango knows I had the paper ready but like an idiot I wanted to go over it one more time. That is when it happened. I even got someone from the computer club to come over and look at it. He said that my hard drive is toast..” She pleaded.

“That is too bad. Things happen in life so you must learn now to be prepared. Use your notes and have the paper ready to hand in by a week from Monday. That will give you this weekend and all next week to do it.” He answered her without looking in her direction.

“My notes?” She stammered.

“Yes your notes. Surely you have written copies of your research. If you don’t then you are wasting my time and yours.” He looked up at her with a hard glare.

“No, no of course not. I have my notes.” She smiled weakly.

“Good, I’ll be in my office until 1 o’clock on Monday then I’m leaving for winter break. After that time I will be forced to fail you and you will be in this class yet again next fall. Do you understand me?” He said firmly as he stood and began to shove papers into his briefcase.

“Yes sir, I understand.” Kagome said gloomily as she lifted her yellow back pack over her shoulder and headed for the door.

“Remember Higurashi. If you keep proper notes and make back ups of your work all the way through you won’t run into this problem again.” He scolded before she could get completely out the door.

“Of course you’re right sir.” She admitted then slipped out before he could say more.

“Kami I hate that man.” She fumed as she stirred her coffee harshly. Sango raised her eyebrow.

“Who are you talking about?” She asked and took a sip of her own coffee. Kagome’s eyes shot up to look at her.

“That asshole Takamura is who.” She hissed. “He gave me until Monday 1 o’clock to get that paper handed in.

“Well that’s great.” Sango clapped her hands in excitement. “Just bring over your notes and you can use my computer.” She offered but the smile fell from her face when she noticed the crest fallen look on Kagome’s face. “You did keep notes didn’t you?” She asked. Kagome put her forehead on the table and nodded.

“Yeah I took notes. You know how I am about losing things so I put them in the safest place I could think of.”She rolled her head to one side to look over at the table not far away. There was a guy setting there with long silver hair pulled back in a pony tale, horn rimmed glasses, a checker shirt with a pocket protector and tan polyester pants sipping a cup of tea. He was even wearing loafers for God’s sake. But even with all that she thought he looked kinda handsome . Some people were just plain nerds and would remain so no matter how old they got. She lifted her head and gave it a shake. ‘Bad Kagome. Don’t judge others so harshly.’ She looked back at Sango and frowned. “I saved it all on my computer.” She admitted sheepishly.

Sango gave her a sympathetic look while her mouth formed an ‘O’. They sat in relative quiet for some time before Kagome thought about something. “Hey Sango, did Miroku ever give you the number for the help he said he could get?” Sango blinked then looked away.

“No.” She said quietly. Kagome watched her friend make a funny face that was so unlike her.

“Ok well could you call him and find out if he has it?” She asked. Sango glanced at her with narrowed eyes.

“Why would I have his number?” She asked suspiciously. Kagome gave her an incredulous look in return.

“Ok well how did you get a hold of him before to come over to my room?” Kagome was intrigued now.

“I got it from Shippo Fox.” She said dryly. Kagome smiled even more.

“Don’t tell me you’ve been hitting on that cute freshman in our advanced chemistry class.” Kagome giggled at the blush that appeared on Sango’s face.

“No way!” Sango snorted. “I had Kirara ask him.” She said heatedly.

“Your roommate?” Kagome asked. “But isn’t Kirara like a senior this year?” Sango nodded.

“Yeah but she likes them young. She said they have more staying power.” Both girls started to laugh hysterically. They didn’t notice but the guy with the silver hair looked over at them and glared. ‘Stupid girls.’ He fumed and stood to leave after placing his money on the table. He looked over at them one more time and had to admit that girl with the wavy black hair was kind of cute but it didn’t matter. He had other interests to pursue.

“I hope you’re not laughing at me.” The calm voice of Miroku interrupted. Sango cringed slightly but smiled up at him.

“No of course not Monk have a seat.” She gestured to one of the empty seats at their table.

“Monk?” Kagome looked back and forth between the two.

“It’s a nick name.” Miroku explained. “My major is Religion, specialty is Buddhism so many of my friends call me a monk.” He went on without taking his eyes off Sango’s flushed face. “Now Sango, why haven’t you called me yet?” He asked calmly. Sango lowered her eyes to stare a place on the table.

“Didn’t have time.” She said cooly.

“I see well no harm done. Here...” He reached into his jacket pocket and produced a piece of paper which he handed to Kagome with a smile. “The number for a guy that might be able to help you but...” he got a serious look on his face. “he isn’t what you would call social.” He frowned at a thought then the smile returned. “But once you get past his rough side I think you’ll find him very helpful.” Miroku added then turned to look at Sango. “Now then, since I kept my end of the bargain...” Kagome looked up at him quizzically.

“What bargain?” Her eyes looked at Sango’s startled expression..

“Oh nothing!” Sango blurted out. “Come on Miroku study, study.” She stood grabbing his arm and hauled him up with her.

“Why Sango I didn’t know you were in such a rush for my presence.” He chuckled at the blush that appeared on her face.

“Wait a minute!” Kagome fumed. “Study what?”

“Oh it’s nothing much. Sango offered to help me with some of my studies in the act of ma...” Miroku was silenced by Sango’s hand over his mouth.

“I’m helping him study about the relationship between human emotions, religion and the physical body.” Sango finished for him artfully. Kagome smiled brightly.

“Oh that is so nice of you. Well have fun kiddies and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” She smiled even more at the blush on Sango’s face. Miroku waved back at her with a wide grin on his face as Sango pulled him away muttering about perverts and hentai thoughts. Kagome giggled as she opened the paper Miroku gave her. ‘Inuyasha Sotomura. Hmm...’ She thought to herself. ‘That name seems familiar.’ With a smile on her face she walked quickly back to her dorm so she could call him.
