Prologue
A band of five youkai ran quickly through the forest. The night hid them well from their pursuers, but they knew they could not escape. One of them carried a small child and was having trouble keeping up. She tripped to the ground and almost lost her young one.
“My lady, are you alright.” Two maidens came to the female youkai’s side and helped her up. However, there stop had allowed their attackers to catch up. “We must go lady Sakumi.”
“We’ll never make it.” The one referred to as lady Sakumi said. She looked down at the small child in her arms. She took out a golden chain and chanted a spell. She clasped the chain around the child’s neck and handed her to one of the ladies. “Take her, you know what to do. She will return and reclaim what is hers, but for now that chain will keep her from being noticed. Make sure that whoever you give her to knows that she must not take off that chain.”
“Lady we can’t leave you.” The other two had long since run ahead, but the two women refused to budge. They tried to pull her with them.
“Leave me be. I cannot keep up in my condition. Please protect her. I shall stay here and buy you some time.” A group of youkai with weapons at hand were now in visual distance. “Please run!”
The ladies took off to do as they were told. Lady Sakumi stood and faced her attackers. She put up a good fight and was able to take out a good number of her attackers, but she soon fell. ‘Goodbye my child. Be safe.’
The ladies hurried their pace as they heard a scream break the night silence. They ran with tears running down their faces. One of the ladies looked down at her small burden. ‘We will protect the princess at all costs.’ They soon came into a clearing with a well in the center.
