I hate the new moon. I have ~always~ hated the new moon. And why not? It’s always been the worst night of my miserable life.

What’s not so widely known is that I love the full moon. My mother loved to moon gaze, and she passed the love on to her son. The moon became something constant in my life, the only thing other than Mother.

The moon was all I had for a time, after she died. Here’s irony: It was on a new moon. My human 16 year old self could only helplessly watch the only person I had on this damned earth slipped from me.

I saw to it she was at least buried properly. It wasn’t hard, the people in the village had much respect for Mother, it was me they had the problem with, and made that perfectly clear as soon as she was in the earth. Satisfied that at least she was taken care of, I retreated to the nearby woods and got in touch with some instincts that I hadn’t paid attention to in... well... ever. That first night alone was when I first allowed myself to cry. It was two nights later, the full moon, that I first met my brother.

I smelt him before I saw him. A demon aura as large as his would’ve been hard to miss, even at that age. Looking down from my treetop perch, I saw quite possibly the most dignified looking creature on earth. He appeared to be sniffing the air. I hoped he wasn’t hungry.

“Half demon,” his voice broke cleanly through the silence. “Show yourself.” With a sigh he added, “I am not here to bring you harm.”

If he was lying, he could kill me without much effort. I didn’t like that thought, but I cautiously came into view, not leaving the tree. He looked up at me.

“You are called InuYasha, correct?” His gaze was harsh, but he didn’t seem the kind to attack without reason.

“Yeah, that’s me,” I answered warily.

“You seem alive enough. Has your mother passed?”

I refused to let the tears come. “Yes. Who are you?”

“I am Sesshomaru.”

“You’re my brother?”

“Half brother, InuYasha. Your late mother sent a messenger to me asking if I would be so kind as to attend to your care. I have approached you, whether or not you come with me is your own affair.”

Well, it wasn’t as if I had anywhere else to go....
