Kore wa Daisuki wo benkyoushimasu, ne? (It’s the study of love, right?)
Lesson 1: Watashi wa yowaii jyanai desu yo! (I am not weak!)
Kagome sighed soflty to herself as the sun brightened again, still unsure of what it wanted to do that day. “Sis! It’s not going to rain! The weather guy just said so!” Souta bounced happily to her, a huge grin on his face. ’So it seems…’ she thought, groaning to herself internaly. She really didn’t feel like getting out, but her mother gave her one of those looks that said, ’You’re going to be a good big sister and take your brother to the festival. No complaining, if you know what’s good for you.’ she sighed again, and held out her hand, getting quite a bit of money from her mother. Much more than she thought she was going to get.
Her eyes widened considerably. “Mom? Are you okay?” she felt she had to question, at the generosity her mom was showing. “Have fun, Kagome. Please, have fun--enjoy it! It’s a beautiful day outside for a festival.” She flashed her oldest daughter a smile She nodded, a small frown coming to her face. ’The festival…I wish they could be here to enjoy it…’ she thought quickly before stamping down the tears that threatened to rise to the surface. ’Stop it, Kagome! You’ve cried too many times to count! It’s time to get over it, girl!’ she shouted to herself, taking a quick moment to go upstairs to compose herself again. A couple of tears did manage to creep down her face and she roughly brushed them away.
She sat down on her bed, trying to contain her emotions before they quickly overtook her. “I made my choice. He made his, and in the end…I ended up back here.” she sighed again before asking to the room, “Why? Why me? Why am I the only one who didn’t get what I wanted?” She looked down into her hands, expecting the questions to go unanswered, when a soft voice reached her ears. “I’m sorry…Kagome…”
Her eyes snapped up quickly, the voice very familiar to her somehow. “Who…who are you?” she asked soflty, eyeing her bow and arrows in the corner of her room quickly. “My dear…I would think that you of all people would remember me?” the soft voice said with an obvious tone in her voice. Kagome thought a moment before hesitantly replying, “M-midoriko?”
“Hai…it is me, child.” she seemed to stop herself from saying anything else, and Kagome finally relaxed, her courage returning to her. “Why are you here, Midoriko?” she asked sotly, almost dreading anything the miko spirit would have to say to her. Last time she spoke with Midoriko, it was to tell her that she would be stuck in her time without her friends…without Inuyasha. It was to tell her that Kikyou was revived by Kagome’s innocent wish, and that she couldn’t exist in the same time as herself.
“My dear…I have important things I must tell only to you. Please listen.” the spirit almost pleaded with her. “Of course I’ll listen. I may not be the guardian of the Shikon no Tama anymore, but I’m still a miko. What is it that you have to tell me?” Kagome could feel Midoriko’s spirit strengthen in confusion. “No longer the guardian? Kagome…you don’t know?” the spirit asked, wonder in her voice.
“Know what, Midoriko? What’s going on?” Kagome asked confused, her heartbeat picking up. “Kagome…you’re still in possession of the Shikon no Tama. You are still it’s Guardian. Do you not feel its power growing within you?” the spirit asked, somewhat bewildered at Kagome’s naïve knowledge.
Kagome stopped in her tracks. ‘I…I still have the Shikon no Tama? I’m still its Guardian?’ she thought quickly, confusion coming to her face. “Why, Midoriko? I thought when I made my wish, the jewel was destroyed?” she questioned. “Iie, that is not the case, Kagome. The jewel will never be completely destroyed. It will always need a guardian to watch over it and keep it from those who would wish to use it’s power for evil.” she said, now dreading her news for the girl more than before. “Then why do I still have it, Midoriko?” she asked, now more confused than ever. “Because, you are the guardian of the jewel in this time. That’s why…” she was cut off by Kagome. “But I protected it in the past! That’s why I spent all that time and effort to destroy Naraku and bring all the pieces back together!” she shouted, irritation in her voice. The jewel was really becoming more trouble than it was worth to protect in her opinion.
“Do not be discouraged, my sister. The jewel must be protected from evil ones, and you are the most powerful miko in this time. Therefore, you are the one to protect it.” Midoriko encouraged the raven haired girl, who was now breaking down into silent tears. “I thought I was done with this. I defeated Naraku, and I wished back everyone’s lives that were lost to him. And even Kikyou was brought back, so her and Inuyasha could fix things between them. I ended up having to leave my friends…and my first love…only to come back and hear you tell me that it’s not finished. When will it be done, Midoriko? When will I be able to stop suffering for that damned forsaken jewel?” she shouted, completely breaking down into sobs that wracked her body.
Silence filled the room except for the soft sobs that came from Kagome, tears that she had shed too many times since she was forced to come back to her time for good. “I’m sorry, Kagome. I know this is very difficult for you to understand, but the jewel needs a protector, and you are the strongest one. You have learned to control your powers, ne?” the spirit asked, trying to get the girl out of her rut. “I have.” she softly replied, tears still falling down. “Prove it to me, Kagome--show me your strength!” the spirit of the miko shouted, a cheer in her voice. Kagome looked up startled. Never before had anyone shown any interest in her powers. She had kept them constantly under lock and key, shielding them from everyone around her. “Alright…alright. I will!” she said, a smile coming to her face. She’d show Midoriko. She’d show everyone in the area who could feel spiritual energy that she was no weakling.
She wiped her tears away swiftly, a firm look coming to her face. She focused on her energy, which was simmering so close to the surface of her skin, just itching to be released. Kagome pushed out on her energy, making a swirl of pink light expand further and further around her body. It filled her room before she pointed a finger out of her open bedroom window and shot a bolt of energy up into the sky, where it exploded like a firework and dissipated into thin air. At that moment, in the crowds of people at the Nagoshi no Harae or the Summer Purification ceremony, a person with brilliant red hair looked up into the sky towards the Higurashi Shrine. He felt the holy energy seek him out. It was a protest to everyone who could feel spiritual energy that the person who released it was no weak unknown.
He looked over to his friend, a boy with tall black hair, who raised an inquisitive eyebrow. A boy with flaming orange hair exclaimed, “What the hell was that?!” while a tall boy with a pair of sunglasses on quickly took off the shades to look closer in the direction of the power. ‘Interesting…it was holy energy that was released…and quite a bit of it.’ Kurama said to Hiei through their mental link. ‘So I noticed, Fox. I didn’t realize that someone with that much holy power still existed.’ he replied, an unspoken question on his mind. ‘Should we look into it?’ Kurama asked, thinking that sooner or later the Leader of the Spirit World would ask them to investigate It anyway. ‘No. We won’t have to. The source of the power is coming here.’ he said, releasing his Jagan quickly to snatch the loose thoughts of a child and woman who were in the dwelling. ‘Who is it?’ Youko asked, his interest now peaked. ‘Surprised to see you taking an interest, Youko.’ Kurama said, raising an eyebrow at his spirit counterpart. ‘The source is very strong. Perhaps a miko?’ he thought, now attempting to picture the potential female. ‘You can stop that anytime, Youko!’ Kurama shouted, not interested in Youko’s visions he was creating. ‘With your luck, Fox, it will be a Priest.’ Hiei said, smirking. A growl could be heard coming from Youko and Kurama couldn’t suppress a laugh, while Hiei just said, “Hn.”
Kagome smiled as she turned back to sit back down on her bed. “Very good, Kagome. You’ve harnessed your power well. I knew you wouldn’t let me down.” Midoriko said, smiling. Kagome remembered the spirits whole reason for being here and asked, “So what was so important that you had to come and see me, Midoriko?”
“Kagome, as you may or may not know, demons still exist in this time. Somehow, that fool child who rules the spirit world has let information slip that the Shikon no Tama still exists, and that you are the guardian in possession of the jewel.” Kagome’s head was swimming with this information. “Leader of the Spirit World? Nani ga…?”
“Don’t let it concern you so. You’ll learn soon enough about the Spirit World and it’s idiotic leader. What I’m here to tell you--all that I’m authorized to tell you, is that someone with a lot of power is after you and the jewel.”
“Who could have more power than Naraku?” she asked, afraid of the answer. “Naraku’s child--Seiichi.”
Kagome’s face paled before she exclaimed, “What?! How in the world did Naraku have a child?!”
“Kagura. Kagura gave birth to a male child before she was killed by you and your friends, and the child survived. He has been buying his time ever since the day you disappeared for the final time from the Feudal Era in the Makai.” At Kagome’s confused look she elaborated.
“The Makai is the demon realm. There are three realms Kagome. The Ningenkai, or human realm, The Spirit Realm, and the Demon Realm. Of course, we are in the Ningenkai right now. Seiichi is in the Makai, and the Leader of the Spirit Realm, obviously, is in the Spirit Realm. The child has been using his absorption powers to become stronger, and he’s been using Kagura’s wind abilities to shield his massive power from the Spirit Realm. No one knows where he is exactly, only that he’s still in the Makai, and that he seeks revenge on the priestess who killed his parents.”
“And of course, that would be me.” Kagome said with distaste. She shook her head thinking, ‘Why are these things always happening to me?’ Midoriko chuckled at the girls stray thought. As Kagome thought further, she came to one that struck fear into her very being. “Midoriko…I know I’ve become stronger, but…do you really think I can take this guy out on my own?” her sapphire blue eyes met Midoriko’s, and she couldn’t help but laugh harder.
“What’s so funny?!” Kagome yelled, not finding the situation at all amusing. “Kagome, since when have I ever left you to do something alone?” Silence filled the air, before a choked up voice replied, “When you made me leave my friends. Ever since that day, I’ve been alone.” Midoriko sobered up quickly, hearing and feeling the pain in the child’s voice.
“I’m sorry, Kagome. I am. Things didn’t work out the way you wanted. Everyone got what they wanted, except for you. Kami knows you’ve suffered most from the Shikon no Tama’s existence, but you’re journey isn’t over yet. You’re destiny hasn’t been completely fulfilled. Do you believe that you have a chance for happiness, my sister?” she asked honestly, waiting for the miko’s words. “I’m sorry. As long as I am guardian of that jewel, as long as it exists, I don’t think I’ll ever have a chance to be happy. Everyone who gets involved with it’s protection dies or gets taken away from me. I don’t know if it’s me, or if its just the mere existence of the jewel, but…” she stopped, and Midoriko’s face went soft and sad. ‘This poor girl. I wish there was some way she could avoid all this pain, but the jewel chose her for some strange reason. Something about her sparked its interest, and now she has to prove she can handle all it can do.’ Midoriko froze, her mind picking up demons in the vicinity. After identifying the aura’s she smiled. ‘Kagome’s future is here…they are very near. I wonder, will she be able to heal the wounds in their hearts, like she did so very many times to the hanyou? Will they be able to heal hers?’
Kagome wiped her freshest tears away, trying to force her melancholy thoughts to the back of her mind. “Midoriko, I’ll keep myself as safe as I can. Will you stay with me, until the end?” Kagome asked, a hopeful tone in her voice. “Gomen nasai, my sister. I will not be able to stay with you. But don’t worry. You will not be alone for very much longer.” she said, before slowly leaving and heading back to the spirit confines of the Shikon no Tama.
Kagome sat still a moment digesting the information just given to her by Midoriko. She picked up her bow and slowly stretched back the string. It was still in perfect working order, which brought a smile to her face. If there was anything she could keep her faith in, it was her bow. “Kagome!! Let’s go!!” Souta’s voice called up to her, bringing her back to her plans for the day. She changed quickly from her jean shorts to her sturdy school girl uniform. ‘I guess I’ll get used to wearing this again.’ she thought, her mind flashing back to battles in the Feudal Era.
