Chapter 1: Aggravation
Kagome plopped down upon the picnic blanket in aggravation. “All I wanted was a nice quiet lunch with Inu Yasha, but nooooo.” Grabbing a container of pickled radishes, the frustrated miko shoved it into her wicker basket. “I am so sick of insecure, overly possessive canines. Lassie would never behave like this.”
Kagome vehemently willed their voices to grow hoarse as Kouga and Inu Yasha’s insults became louder and nastier. She sighed. “I really need to learn a silencing spell.” The searing glare she sent them went unnoticed by both snarling canine demons.
From across the meadow, Ginta nudged Hakkaku with his elbow. The two wolf demons worriedly watched Kagome as she violently repacked food and utensils. Tentatively, they approached the fuming human. “Little Sis, are you OK?”
Kagome slammed the basket lid closed. “No, I’m not.” Gripping the basket handle tightly, she stood and began to walk away. Kagome was determined to get as far the hell away from her insensitive suitors as possible. “500 years into the future should be far enough. I’ll seal the well so Inu Yasha can’t follow and I’ll take a much deserved break.”
Ginta and Hakkaku trotted after her like well-trained lap dogs. “What’s wrong?” asked Hakkaku. “Maybe we can help.”
Kagome halted. She arched her eyebrow at the two concerned demons and glanced at them as if they were dimwits. Ginta inwardly groaned at Hakkaku’s idiocy as Hakkaku blushed finally realizing the stupidity behind his question. All three stared at the cause of her justified anger, mesmerized by the childish actions of an arrogant wolf prince and a belligerent hanyou.
Kouga and Inu Yasha’s foreheads were practically touching as rage colored their faces crimson. Their furious gazes were locked in an intense battle for dominance, neither alpha willing to break eye contact first. Spittle flew from their mouths as they growled and exchanged vile insults.
Kagome’s shoulders slumped. “Just once I wish those two jerks could be civil and not fight over me as if I were a bone.”
Her sad expression tore at their hearts reminding Hakkaku and Ginta of a lonely cub whining for it’s mother the first time they’re separated. “I suppose we could try to break it up,” suggested Ginta with fear tingeing his voice.
Hakkaku gulped. “Uh, yeah. Kouga won’t hurt us…too much.”
“No, let them beat each other senseless.” Seeing Ginta and Hakkaku’s startled looks the irritated miko dumped the basket onto the ground. “I’ve had it with those two mongrels! I give up!” Exasperated, Kagome flung her hands into the air. “Kami knows, I’ve tried my best to stop them.”
Placing her hands on her hips, Kagome angrily said, “I’ve begged; I’ve cried; I’ve screamed; I’ve soothed bruised egos. So help me, I’ve tried to reason with both of them. The stubborn fools refuse to listen.”
She ran her hand through her dark tresses in aggravation. “I just don’t know what to do anymore. I can’t make Kouga stay put long enough to hear the truth and if I sit Inu Yasha one more time, I’m afraid his spine will snap.” Kagome jabbed a finger towards Inu Yasha and Kouga. “If they want to behave like spoiled puppies so be it.”
Hakkaku awkwardly patted the upset miko’s shoulder. “Don’t be mad, Little Sis. They may be dense but they’re smart enough to love you.”
Ginta picked up the picnic basket. “It’s a beautiful day, Sis; don’t let their jealousy ruin it.”
Smiling gratefully, Kagome linked her arms through theirs. “It would be a shame for my picnic to go to waste.” Unnoticed by Inu Yasha and Kouga, the trio wandered off to find a peaceful, sunny spot to eat.
