Theme: "It Must Have Been Love" Roxette

It had been 48 hours since the fight.

*Kami, Inu Yasha, what were you thinking!!!!!! That I wouldn't find out?!?!?*

Kagome reflected on infuriating images burned deep into her subconscious, of he and Kikyou embracing (in little more than what the gods had given them). Visions of Kikyou caressing Inu Yasha’s naked form and Inu Yasha stroking her raven locks made Kagome’s stomach do flips as the bile churned.
Hot tears silently stinging her cheeks, Kagome went through the drawer where she had kept mementos of her travels with Inu Yasha from the past few years.

*I thought you were over her... I thought -- I thought I meant more to you than that...*

Not even trying to fight them back anymore, the tears poured from her eyes. Falling face first into a comforting, satiny pillow on her bed, Kagome’s mind raced. ‘What the hell did I see in that baka jerk anyway?!?!? He never gave a damn about me... always calling me stupid and pathetic and weak. Always comparing me to her... I don't think that damn hanyou had a decent bone in his body!’ With that thought the corner of her mouth quirked. Deep down she knew the truth. He did care. He wasn't really as tough as his exterior would lead one to believe. ‘I know he cares... I know that he l-loves me... No. He loves HER!’ she screamed mentally. ‘He doesn't love me. I don't mean anything to Inu Yasha. How could I be so blind? I’m such a fool. He's just a pompous arrogant bastard! He couldn't love anyone the way he loves her... that self-absorbed bitch... “I hate Kikyou! I hate you! Do you hear me? I HATE YOU, KIKYOU!!!” Kagome shouted to no one in particular.
Kagome gasped. “Have I really become that callous? That’s not like me at all...”
Dejectedly, Kagome went back to the drawer to empty its contents.
Dumping everything out, Kagome watched as a picture tumbled to the bed. Upon turning it over, fresh tears threatened to spill from her puffy, red eyes. A warm happy image of all the friends she had made in the time she spent in feudal Japan smiled back at her. Memories spun in her mind of the adorable kitsune, ‘Shippou. You are such a little trickster. And Kaede, you’re so different from Kikyou, it’s so hard to tell you’re even related,’ Kagome giggled. ‘Sango. You’re so passionate and brave after all your strife. I just hope I can be that strong one-day. Miroku, you’re such a perv. You deserved that slap,’ she smirked, looking at the red hand-shaped mark on his cheek. ‘Kouga. You really love goading Inu Yasha, don‘t you?’ Kagome reflected with a grin, looking at the tangled youkai; a knotted mass of arms and legs. "I-Inu...Yasha." Her heart sunk into her lap as she touched the picture gingerly, tracing his disgruntled face with delicate fingertips. What was it about him that got to her? Why had she been so fascinated by such a (quite frequently) insensitive hanyou?
‘Well at least my journeys with you are over...’ she thought with a sigh. ‘No more chasing shikon shards... No more youkai... No more Inu Yasha.’
With resolve, she set the picture aside and continued rifling through the contents of the drawer. Kagome mindlessly reached for her radio, jumping unceremoniously to turn it off. On the radio, an all too fitting song flowed from the speakers. “...all that I wanted. Now I’m living without. It must have been love, but it’s over now...” Turning from the radio and wiping her face with her sleeve, Kagome pushed herself off the bed and made her way down stairs.
Wonderful smells wafted from the kitchen. "Hey, Okkaa-chan... What's for dinner??" Kagome ran up and wrapped her arms around her mother's waist, her mood lightening. "It's your favorite dear," her mother smiled, not turning from the stove. "It's so nice to have you back. It’s just not the same when you’re gone. Is Inu Yasha coming for dinner?" Ms. Higurashi paused. Kagome's head dropped, her unbalanced spirit falling through the floor. Fighting back the tears she managed a soft "No." "Oh my," her mother continued. "And here I cooked for the masses. Oh well."
Smiling, her mother went back to her tasks at the stove. Letting her grip fall from her mother's waist, Kagome slumped down at the table. "Is there something troubling you, dear?" Her mother prodded. Without making eye contact, Kagome mumbled under her breath. "Did you say something, Kagome?" Her mother asked over her shoulder. "No mom. I didn’t say anything. School's just got me a little bummed." Kagome hated lying to her mother, but it was better that she didn't know the truth. Her mother was very understanding of Inu Yasha, but Kagome certainly didn't want this to blow out of proportion. ‘Wait... Why do I care what happens? It’s not like I’m gonna see him anymore anyway.’ “Just think dear,” her mother quipped, drawing Kagome out of her thoughts. “School’s almost over. Just a few more days I think. Are you still going with your friends to the beach house for the summer? It may need a little cleaning, but I‘m sure you and your friends would be more than happy to take care of that.” Kagome had been so wrapped up in the fight with Inu Yasha that she had completely forgotten about her summer plans. “Hai! And by the way, mom, I caught the hint. ^_~” Kagome jokingly retorted. With that she bounced off to her room to start packing. “^_^ I’m so glad to see her in better spirits!” Her mother mused. Intuition told her Kagome would feel better with time.

On the other side of time...

“Kikyou,” Inu Yasha whispered. She stood before him in a robe that barely covered her naked form. It also ‘conveniently’ happened to be loosely tied. Inu Yasha hardly covered, himself, was wearing nothing more than his gi. “You're walking a bit stiff today, Inu Yasha." Kikyou remarked snidely. “I can’t help it when you’re around Kago... I mean Kikyou,” he said with a sly grin. “You know I’ve chosen to be with Kagome. You’re nothing more than a clay shell. You’re not the woman I once loved,” he said a little more delicately. “I cared about Kikyou, and if you were really Kikyou, you would understand how things truly are. Besides,” he reflected, “You didn’t even love me for what I am. You would have had me become human just to suit your preferences. Kagome likes me for me. Just the way I am. That’s why I cherish her and I want to be with her forever. I don‘t have to be anyone else.”
Lost in his speech, Inu Yasha didn’t hear the door slide open. Seeing Kagome, Kikyou promptly leaned in, fixing a huge kiss on Inu Yasha. Surprised by Kikyou‘s embrace, Inu Yasha didn’t notice Kagome’s presence until her gasp and the sounds of her bathing items hitting the floor echoed across the bathhouse. Pulling Kikyou off by her hair, Inu Yasha turned so fast he nearly fell on the slick tiles.
“Kagome...it-it’s not what you think,” he managed to stammer out. “Kagome please don’t ... KAGOME!!!!!!”
With that she was gone, a trail of hot tears forming a sparkling stream behind her. “Damnit. I hate when she cries...” Inu Yasha muttered turning to Kikyou in disgust. “You knew this was going to happen, didn’t you?” He said, pointing an accusatory finger at the silent woman. “Answer me you rotting bitch!!!”
Kikyou sat still. A huge smirk painted across her face as she could hardly contain her amusement. “Yes. I knew she would come,” Kikyou chided. “I told her to meet me here. In fact,” Kikyou tisked, casually glancing at her nails. “She was right on time. I told her I was going to return to my grave and leave the two of you in peace.” With this thought ripping at his mind, it was all Inu Yasha could do to keep from tearing the miko to shreds. “If I can’t get her to reason with me, I’ll be back for you...” he trailed off. “And you won’t like it!” He shouted over his shoulder as he took flight. “I’ll be waiting,” Kikyou snorted with a smug indignant look on her face. “You know you’re wasting your time, Inu Yasha,” she sighed after he was gone. “And when you realize this, I will indeed be here waiting for you with open arms. I can finally be with you in death as we weren’t in life.”
Catching up to Kagome just as she was about to jump into the well, Inu Yasha called to her. “Kagome,” he pleaded. “Please wait. You have to listen to my side of the stor-”
“I don’t have to do anything you say. Ever again!” Kagome growled, cutting him off mid-sentence. “Let me guess, you had to revive her, because she was drowning... Or maybe you had to console her, because Naraku was using her as a puppet again...” Kagome practically screamed. “Oh, wait!!! I know exactly what happened!!!” Kagome exclaimed. “You thought you were kissing me. That‘s it, isn’t it??? Kami Inu Yasha, what were you thinking!!! That I wouldn't find out?!?!?" At this point Kagome was sobbing. "I thought you were over her... I thought -- I thought I meant more to you than that. I thought that you had finally decided that you wanted me. Tell me I'm wrong. Please, tell me what I saw was an illusion," she begged.
"No... Don't tell me that,” her voice grew menacing. “I don't want you lying to me anymore than you already have. It's bad enough that you were hiding THIS from me. Kami only knows what else you‘ve been hiding." Before Inu Yasha could defend himself Kagome jumped down the well as she shouted, “Don’t even think about following me! I don’t want to see you. I don’t want to feel your presence. And I especially don’t want to hear anymore of your lies!!!” And with that Kagome was gone.

Well. This was my first ever attempt at writing a fan fiction. I posted this for the first time a year ago. I'm so nitpicky. I had to play with it again. This is trip #3. The cleaners are getting sick of me. Give me a few more weeks, you'll probably see trip 4 and my head. ^_^0 I really am working on chapter two as we speak, I promise.
I know this doesn’t have a lemony fresh scent just yet, but give me some time kiddies, this isn’t a PWP. Please critique my story so I can enjoy your twisted ideas and expand on them. All ideas and flames are welcome, however, I do believe in karma ^_~. Thanx, and enjoy.

Sincerely,
Tamamiko
