She ran through the woods, seeking desperately to get somewhere, anywhere that was safe. Days, she had been running for days trying to flee, and in that time she couldn’t find the shelter she desperately seeked. She had to find a place to get away. She could think of only one place, however, and that one place may not even be her salvation. The place she was running to, the man she was running to, may turn her away.
Branches whipped at her face and tore at her clothes as she ran on, cutting her body as she desperately kept her pace up. She could hear them behind her, they were still following her and some were up above as well. Luckily the woods in the western lands were thick, and offered much shelter. Not only this, but she knew them well. She still had some hope of getting away from her pursuers.
Many years ago she had spent her fair share of time exploring the woods she now ran through, and walking them with the lord of the lands. He had rescued her from her family’s demise, and had treated her well while she had stayed in his company. IN fact he gave her much more attention than she had ever anticipated and reveled in every moment of it. He was kind in his own way, and even more so when they were alone. He had showed her more interest than any other person had in her life. She trusted him and confided in him completely. She had shared everything with him in those walks that they shared. She shared and talked freely, much to his surprise she was sure, but he always listened intently, and even if he had ever been bored he never showed it. He had been the only one to take an interest in her when no other had, and she had hurt him when she left. She knew it too, but she only did it for him… he would’ve been killed had she not. How could she ever make him see that?
Tears burned at her eyes as pain flooded her body, though she wasn’t sure if it was the pain from her wounds or from the memories of the one she had hurt so deeply. She was exhausted and every nerve in her begged for rest. She had been on the run for quite some time and her body had lost blood due to the cuts and scratched that were all over her. She knew her body needed the rest it craved, but she couldn’t, they were too close. A loud cry issued from above and behind her, signaling how close they were. They could smell her scent she knew, but it would still be hard to find her. If only she could make it, just a little farther, his castle was so close. Just a little farther.

Rin sat quietly in the back yard of the palace enjoying the night air. Sesshoumaru wasn’t too far away, maintaining a good watch over the young girl. She had wanted to come out and enjoy the warm evening due to the unusualness of the weather being the way it was for late fall. Though his instincts told him to take her back inside, he didn’t wish to alarm her, much less disappoint the young one. She had been ill as of late, and this was the first time she had been able to enjoy the outdoors for quite a while.
She sat in contentment on the ground, gazing up at the stars without a care in the world. Her lord however did have a care at this moment. Something still wasn’t right, and he couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but he knew there was defiantly something wrong. But what? Then he smelled it, blood in the air… and it was familiar.
A loud screech could be heard from a distance and this alerted Rin from her star gazing. Quickly she scampered up and ran to her fully alert master’s side. His hand came to rest upon her soft hair, calming her slightly and giving her the much needed comfort she required from him.
He didn’t even look at her as he commanded her to go inside, and she didn’t even argue but merely dropped her lord’s hand and took off in the direction of Jaken and the doors.
Shadows befell his grounds and he looked up, though he needed no visual to know who and what it was. It was the demon tribe of the north, not the leader, but his followers. They never ventured into his lands, they knew it was too dangerous and fatal if captured.
A small smile graced Sesshoumaru’s lips. To think, those mongrels had thought to come into his lands. They must’ve lost something, too bad for them. How perfect for him. A runaway from the lord of the north, and the vengeance he had looked for for so long. The smile only grew as the lord of the west continued to gaze toward his woods.

The branches were merciless to her tattered body as she continued to flee from those who pursued her. She knew she was impossibly close now, and she prayed she could get there in time. Though she wasn’t sure she could face him. She was terrified, what would he say, would he send her back? Her breath caught in her throat at this thought, and her tears began to fall freely. She began to stumble as she ran, unable to run well anymore. Her tears blurred her vision as she struggled in vain with her tired body to keep going. Suddenly her legs gave out and she crashed to the ground painfully. Behind her she could hear them, they had gained on her. Whimpering quietly she picked herself up, willingly her stubborn body to move, and suddenly she broke through the woods and into the clearing. Her wings moved away from her back to catch her in the wind, but they had been too battered to even try to hold her up. Her small form slammed into the ground, and through her tears she saw a shadow fall over her exhausted body. Her head came to rest on the ground in exhaustion and defeat.
She had been caught.
*************************
The smirk left his face as determination set in. There was a sound coming from the woods, and he knew he had distinctly heard a whimper come from those woods. Then suddenly a scent hit him, a scent of…fear.
Breaking out of his thoughts he quickly stalked towards the woods that began at the end of his yard. He was halfway there when a woman stumbled out from them, landing hard on the ground, barely able to move. She was bloody and her clothes torn into rags, barely covering her quivering form. His shadow came to cover her, and he heard a soft whimper exit from her mouth. The fear in her was overwhelming and it invaded his senses as it rolled off of her. She must’ve though she had been caught by her pursuers, and at this realization, she passed out.
The demons had come to hover above the lord of the western lands, surprising him with their boldness. Sesshoumaru certainly didn’t appreciate their trespassing, and intended to make it known. His head tilted to the sky slowly, and when his molten gaze locked onto the intruders, they quickly fled with their lives still intact.
He would deal with them later, for now… the girl at his feet was what needed his attention. He knelt down to her, reaching to move her hair aside from her bloodied face so he could get a good look at her. Her face was cut deeply and bleeding, and again a strange feeling came over him. His normal feelings of anger had dissipated at the sight of the wounded woman in front of him and he couldn’t understand why. It had been a long time since he had felt this way… only one had ever…
‘NO! No thoughts of that… of her.’ He scolded himself, lightly caressing the soft torn cheek of the exhausted girl passed out on the ground beside him. But still… she seemed familiar, though her scent was faint and it was covered by something, something he couldn’t quite place. Most likely the woods she had been running through. She was a demon yes, but a weak one due to the fact that her scent was this weak. A weak demon, or a demon made weak.
A gentle breeze picked up, flowing over their bodies. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a large white feather drift along the wind.
Feather? From wings?
Looking from her face to her back, he then noticed her large white wings. He hadn’t seen a demon like this is quite some time… in fact, they were almost obsolete from the world.
Slowly he reached out to her wings, apprehensive of touching them. Wings were very tender, and the ones in front of him had been badly battered. Ever so gently though he let his claws graze the white softness, and they twitched in response to his touch. His hand pulled back, quickly at the sudden movement, and his attention was gained as a name issued forth from her mouth…
“Sesshoumaru…”
That voice… Something took him back at that moment upon hearing this young woman speak, it took him back to the time when he had first touched a pair of wings such as these. It was rare for a demon to be graced with the presence of an angel. Though they weren’t angels, they were beautiful and captivating, with large white wings. They had earned the nickname of Angel because of their intense beauty and massive wings. In fact he couldn’t recall what their race actually had been called, they were an old race when he had come to be, and they were a hard one to find once he had reached adulthood. His father had told him of them, told him they were a myth. Though he had found out for himself that they were indeed no myth, they were real.
He had rescued one in fact, and the day she let him touch her wings was a memorable one…
That girl held the amazing beauty of her race, not only in her appearance, but in her heart. She was beautiful everywhere, and she brought out things in him he never knew existed. He remembered that day well… it was a warm summer day and she came to him in his chambers asking him to accompany her on a walk. Of course he didn’t decline, and he was forever grateful he never had.
It was an amazing feeling, touching her wings, and the way she let him explore freely, without any fear of him at all. She had simply asked him if he would like to, which had stunned him immensely. He had wanted to for quite some time, but to ask was inappropriate, and so he never did. But she offered her confidence freely and allowed him the sacred honor most never received. He was moved with her openness, and something deep inside him was touched. Her smile had been so warm, and her gentle embrace had been too much to ignore… so he didn’t.
He took her that day. In their place in the woods. The place where they shared many long talks. The place he let his barriers drop, the place where she opened her body to him. The place where he lost his heart to her.
A gentle gust of wind brought him back to the present and again the woman’s wings rustled, reminding him of what was happening around him.
Slowly, and tenderly he rolled the woman over to see her face. His gaze fell upon a small round face, silent in her state. Her eyes were closed from his gaze, and her mouth parted slightly to take in deep breaths as she rested. Cradling her head in his hand, he smoothed the gentle plane of her cheek with his clawed thumb, and then it hit him. He realized at that very instant who the woman laying beside him was…
“Ayana…” he murmured to her, picking her up and carrying her aching body inside his palace to safety.
