Chapter 1: Disturbing news
Since the defeat of Naraku, almost a month ago, there had been very little to disturb the forest. It was as though the destruction of the would-be-demon had signaled the return to peace and silence. All manner of life seemed to respect this tacit agreement and the days flew by with the gentle breeze. Suddenly, the harmony of the forest was broken by the sound of running footsteps. Small creatures scampered from the trail and hid in the brush to avoid being trampled by the heavily panting runner.
He had to hurry; he needed to get to his lord as quickly as possible. The news he bore was not pleasant and he risked severe punishment by revealing his intelligence. However, the consequences would be grimmer if he failed to deliver his message on time. Finally, he broke from the cover of the trees and began the long ascent towards the cave where his prince resided.
- “Let me pass! I bring tidings from the south.” He said to the warrior guarding the entrance to the royal abode.
Immediately, the guard moved aside. Slowing his steps the messenger approached Kouga with great caution. Though he was a well-respected and well-loved leader, his men still trembled at the thought of his temper. Gathering his courage, the messenger kneeled down before the wolf prince and spoke.
- “My liege.” He said.
- “What is it Ginta?” Kouga asked turning to gaze at his long time servant and comrade in arms; one of the few of the original tribe who had survived Kagura’s attack and the difficult move to the northern mountains. “What message do you bring from my woman?”
Worried for Kagome, despite the destruction of Naraku in which he had played an active role, Kouga had dispatched one of his most trusted warriors to keep tabs on the young miko while he returned to his lands. He needed to prepare his home to welcome the human whom he had chosen as his mate. Soon he would go to her himself and make his offer.
- “I bring no message from the Lady Kagome.” Seeing Kouga ball his fists, Ginta hurried to finish his loathsome duty. “Only very disturbing news. It would seem that the Lady…that she as accepted the inu half-breed.”
- “What the hell do you mean, accepted?” Kouga demanded furious.
- “ The Lady Kagome has consented to become his…his mate, my Lord” Raising his arms up to cover his head, Ginta waited for what was sure to be a very violent reaction from his prince.
The young wolf had been right to fear. Letting out a tortured howl, Kouga struck out at the prostrating Ginta, kicking him squarely in the stomach. “How could she? How could she choose that mongrel over me?” Kouga could not comprehend why Kagome should reject him. He was a full demon, and a prince to boot. She could not refuse him. Kouga was used to getting what he wanted and there was no way in hell he would be denied.
- “If that bastard thinks he can steal my woman then he his greatly mistaken.” Kouga said as he regained some of his princely composure. “Now tell me everything you know!”
- “The hanyou made his proposal two days ago.” Ginta explained. “However, the Lady Kagome requested that they hold a human ceremony before they performed the demon mating rights.
- “That’s interesting.” Kouga pondered out load. “That should give me enough time to act.”
Human mating rituals were very elaborate, they often required up to a week of preparation; and Kouga knew that many things could change in a week. He began to formulate a plan in his head; if his woman would not come to him of her own accord than he would make her come, even if she had to be dragged kicking and screaming to his side.
- “Ginta, bring me two of your most trusted men. I have a delicate mission for them.”
Kouga would not go himself. It was one thing for a prince to approach his chosen personally, but quite another for him to abduct a female who had already consented to become another’s mate. No, he would not lower himself. Rather, he would have the wench brought to him. However, he could not send Ginta or Hakkaku, Inuyasha would recognize their scent immediately and know that something was amiss. It was preferable to send two men who were as yet unknown to the hanyou so they might accomplish their mission without risk of detection.
- “My Lord! May I present Ookamiichiro and Ookamijiro, my sister’s two eldest sons.” Ginta made the introduction once he had returned from his errand. “They are both very trustworthy.”
- “Very well, you may leave us.”
Ginta bowed and exited the cavern of his Lord. Left alone, Kouga took his time to study the men standing before him. The brothers were both quite young; the prince doubted they had seen twenty winters. But at least he was certain that Inuyasha did not know them for they had not yet taken up active duty and had not participated in any battles in which the hanyou was involved.
- “I have a very special mission for you. One that must be carried out with the utmost stealth and secrecy” Kouga said.” Are you capable of performing such a duty for your Lord?”
- “Yes, we live to serve you.” They responded in unison.
- “Good” Kouga paused before he elaborated on his plan. “You will go south. daysdays run from here there is a village under the protection of an old miko by the name of Kaede. In this village resides a young woman, whom you shall bring to me.”
- “How will we know this lady, my liege?” Ookamiichiro, the elder and braver of the brothers, inquired.
- “She is small and quite beautiful. She has long ebony hair and wears very particular clothing.” He explained. “You two are to take her and bring her to me unmolested.”
The brothers bowed their heads in silent understanding. They guessed at the importance of this mission and would accomplish it to the best of their abilities. To perform such a delicate assignment for their prince would most likely result in an appointment to his personal guard or some other prestigious commission.
- “One more thing.” The brothers lifted their eyes to their prince. “I request that the wench be dressed properly. So I want you to give her this kimono.” Kouga said has he handed a brightly embroidered sky-blue kimono, which he had taken during his last raid, to one of the brothers.
- “We will not fail you Lord.” The answered with one voice.
- “No, the consequences would be most dire if you did!”

A LONG A/N: Because of my recent move, I have been forced to take a LONG hiatus from this story; and writing in general. As I was re-reading, I noticed certain irregularities in the original story. As such, have decided to retool this story in its entirety. I will take this opportunity to correct the original timeline and insure that the characters, particularly Sango, remain truer to form. For those who enjoyed my original version, I promise the changes will be minimal.
