Disclaimer: I give credit where credit is due. I neither own the songs nor the characters mentioned herein. All songs are property of the artist who created them. The characters mentioned in the texts of my story are the sole property of Ms. Rumiko Takahashi (a fantastically talented author ^_^) *continues with the butt kissing*, and the only ones I lay claim to are the ones I create from scratch. Now then, on to my story (I hope you enjoy).
Theme: "It Must Have Been Love" Roxette
It had been 48 hours since the fight.
"Gods Inu Yasha, what were you thinking!!!!!! That I wouldn't find out?!?!?" Kagome reflected on infuriating images, burned deep into her subconscious, of Inu Yasha and Kikyo embracing (in little more than what the gods had given them). Visions of him running his hands softly over her dark, rich, silken, black locks as they kissed passionately.
Hot tears silently stinging her cheeks, Kagome went through the drawer where she had kept mementos of her travels with Inu Yasha from the past several years. "I thought you were over her... I thought -- I thought I meant more to you than that...”
Not even trying to fight them back anymore, the tears poured from her eyes. Falling face first into a comforting satiny pillow on her bed, Kagome’s mind raced. ‘What the hell did I see in that baka jerk, anyway?!?!? He never gave a damn about me... always calling me stupid things. I don't think that half-breed had a decent bone in his body!’ With that thought the corner of her mouth quirked. Deep down she knew the truth. He did care. He wasn't really as tough as his exterior would lead one to believe. ‘I know he cares... I know that he lo.. loves.. No. Who am I kidding?’ she thought, shaking her head. ‘He doesn't feel like that. Not for me. I don't mean anything to Inu Yasha. He's too high... too mighty. He couldn't love anyone, save her... save Kikyou...’
Bitterly, Kagome went back to the drawer to empty its contents. "They're perfect for each other!"
Dumping everything out, Kagome watched as a picture tumbled to the bed. Upon turning it over the tears welled up in her eyes all over again. A warm happy image of her and all the friends she had made in the time she had spent in ancient Japan. Memories spun in her mind of the adorable kitsune, ‘Shippo. Kaede is so different from Kikyou you could hardly tell they were sisters’ Kagome giggled. ‘Sango. She’s so passionate after going through what she has. I just hope I can be that strong some day. Miroku. What a perv,’ she smirked. ‘Kouga. Man he loved goad Inu Yasha,’ she thought with a grin. "....I...Inu...Yasha." Her heart sank to her lap.
She touched the picture gingerly, tracing his face with delicate fingertips. What was it about him that got to her? Why had she been so fascinated by such a (quite frequently) insensitive hanyou?
‘At least my journeys with you are over...’ she thought with a sigh. ‘No more chasing shikon shards... No more youkai... No more Inu Yasha.’
With resolve, she set the picture aside and continued rifling through the contents of the drawer. Kagome mindlessly reached for her radio jumping unceremoniously to turn it immediately back off. On the radio an all too fitting song flowed from the speakers. “...all that I wanted now I’m living without. It must have been love, but it’s over now...” Turning from the radio and wiping away a tear, Kagome pushed herself off the bed and made her way down stairs.
Wonderful smells wafted from the kitchen. "Hey, Okkaa-chan... What's for dinner??" Kagome ran up and wrapped her arms around her mother's waist, her mood lightening. "It's your favorite," her mother smiled. "It's so nice to have you back home dear. Is Inu Yasha coming for dinner?" Kagome's head dropped along with her unbalanced spirit. Fighting back the tears she managed a soft "No." "Oh my," her mother continued. "And here I cooked for the masses."
Smiling her mother went back to her tasks at the stove. Letting her grip fall from her mother's waist, Kagome slumped down at the table. "Is there something troubling you, dear?" her mother prodded. Not making eye contact, Kagome mumbled under her breath. "Did you say something, dear?" "No mom. I didn’t say anything. School's just got me a little bummed." Kagome hated lying to her mother, but it was better that she didn't know the truth. Her mother already had a pretty short fuse where Inu Yasha was concerned, and Kagome certainly didn't need this blowing out of proportion as so many past incidences had. “Just think dear,” her mother quipped. “School’s almost over. Are you still going with your friends to the beach house this summer?” Kagome had been so wrapped up in the fight with Inu Yasha that she had completely forgotten about her summer plans. “Hai!” Kagome chirped at her mother‘s query. With that she bounced off to her room. “^_^ I’m so glad to see her in better spirits!” her mother mused. Though, secretly, she did know the truth.

Back on the other side of the well...
“Kikyou,” Inu Yasha whispered. She stood there in a robe that barely covered her naked form. It also ‘conveniently’ happened to be loosely tied. Inu Yasha was hardly covered, himself, wearing nothing more than a thin towel. “You're walking a bit stiff today, Inu Yasha... " Kikyou remarked snidely. 'Oh gods... she knows?!?’ he thought, as he shook out his towel to give a little more room and help hide his excitement, though not very effective. 'Kikyou still turns me on, but only because she reminds me so much of Kagome.‘
Seeing Kagome walk in, Kikyou promptly leaned in, planting a huge kiss on Inu Yasha. Lost in the kiss, Inu Yasha didn’t notice Kagome was there until her gasp echoed across the bathhouse. Inu Yasha turned so fast he nearly fell on the slick tiles. “Kagome...it... it’s not what you think,” he managed to stammer out. “Kagome! Don’t ... KAGOME!!!!!!”
With that she was gone, a trail of hot tears forming a sparkling stream behind her. “Damnit. I hate it when she cries...“ Inu Yasha muttered turning to Kikyo in disgust. “You knew this was going to happen, didn’t you?” pointing an accusing finger at the silent woman. “Answer me BITCH!!!”
Kikyou sat still. A huge smirk painted across her face as she could hardly contain her amusement. “Yes. I knew she would come,” Kikyou chided. “I told her to meet me here. In fact,” Kikyou tisked, casually glancing at her nails. “She was right on time.” With this thought tearing at his mind, it was all Inu Yasha could do to keep from ripping the miko to shreds. “If I can’t get her to reason with me, I’ll be back for you...” he trailed off. “And you won’t like it!” he shouted over his shoulder as he took flight. “I’ll be waiting,” Kikyo snorted with a smug indignant look on her face. “You know you’re wasting your time, Inu Yasha...” she sighed after he was gone. “And when you realize this, I will indeed be here waiting for you.”
Catching up to Kagome just as she was about to jump into the well, Inu Yasha called to her. “Kagome,” he pleaded. “Please wait. You have to listen to my side of the sto...”
“I don’t have to do anything you say. Ever again!” Kagome growled, cutting him off mid-sentence. “Let me guess, you had to revive her, because she was drowning... Or maybe you had to console her, because Naraku was using her as puppet again...” Kagome practically screamed. “Oh, wait!!! I know exactly what happened!!!” Kagome exclaimed. “She tricked you into thinking she was I. That‘s it isn’t it??? Gods Inu Yasha, what were you thinking!!! That I wouldn't find out?!?!?" At this point Kagome was sobbing. "I thought you were over her... I thought -- I thought I meant more to you than that. Tell me I'm wrong. Please, tell me what I saw was an illusion," she begged. "No... Don't tell me that,” her voice grew menacing. “I don't want you lying to me anymore than you already have. It's bad enough that you were hiding THIS from me. Gods know I need anymore lies from you." Before Inu Yasha could defend himself Kagome jumped down the well as she shouted, “Don’t even think about following me! I don’t want to see you. I don’t want to feel your presence. And I especially don’t want to hear anymore of your lies!!!” And with that Kagome was gone.
Well. This was my first ever attempt at a fan fiction. What’d ya think? I know this doesn’t have a lemony fresh scent just yet, but give me time, this isn’t a PWP. Please critique my story so I can get a better idea of where this should go. All ideas and flames are welcome, however, I do believe in karma ^_~. Thanx, and enjoy.
Sincerely,
Tamamiko
