But one thing..as people or...youkai from japanese origin they would not name themselves simply spitz.
There are enough japanese breed whose roots reach beyond the era of Inuyasha and Sess...

I personally think a white Kishu Inu with all the fluffy fur might be the best match, but i think you wanna take a look yourself? http://www.bulldoginformation.com/japanese-dog-breeds.html Kishus are from the south, so an other breed may match better with the story?
